I had never played the original Persona 3. This game was my first time through it. Last year during the winter steam sale I purchased Persona 5 Royal. That was my introduction to the Persona series. Took me a few months to beat, since I only have time to play at night for an hour or two. As soon as I finished P5, this game came out. I have never thrown down money faster for a game. Just completed it a few weeks ago. Just in time for the DLC to arrive.
To be fair on the Aigis dlc, according to the devs that wasn't even approved of until like... 2-3 weeks before P3R launch cause they saw the popular demand
I am not joking when I say that I have this phenomenon involving SuperButterBuns where whenever I remember their existence and how they haven't uploaded in a while, they literally upload the same day or the day after they have crossed my mind.
One thing about this current trend of remakes is that there seems to be an attitude that older games are no longer worth playing or have no merits at all. I have seen some people claim that P4 “desperately needs to be remade”. And no it doesn’t. It still is a great game. Hell I still believe P3 didn’t “desperately need” to be remade. P3R existing is fine, but the older versions are not “unplayable garbage” or whatever that some people believe.
What I think is that a lot of people say "remake" when all they mean is "visual update" which then gets muddled with people who think "this doesnt play like P5 so its bad and needs a remake". But personally I even prefer P4 Golden over P5 Royal because of how much more natural the social aspect flows in Golden compared to Royal. Would I complain about P4 getting remake on the scale of Reload? Ofcourse not, but its still a good and playable game right now and I would rather have Atlus focusing on making new games instead of just doing Remakes or Spinoffs
P3 FES is very dated to be fair. The old mechanics didn't come back because they were tedious and clunky e.g. the Fatigue system and downing yourself on misses. A remake isn't "needed," but Atlus would be missing out on a huge net gain if it still wasn't remade to this day.
@@inplane9970 The thing I find funny about P3, is that all the usual complaints with FES’s gameplay were fixed in P3P. The Fatigue system doesn’t affect you while in Tartarus, and the combat takes P4’s changes. And you can directly control party members.
@@markkoehr5003 Right and they added more QoL changes and interesting mechanics like fast sprinting in Tartarus, Monad Doors, Fuuka shenanigans, and overall a more enjoyable gameplay loop. I'd even argue anything before P5 is super dated because of the old engine. It limits the addition of interesting mechanics and ideas.
Funny enough, I read a theory that the non-human "pet" character is Aigis. And the fact that she appears in the dancing logo (when Morgana and Teddie appear in p5 and 4 dancing) proves it to me
@@LangostaV76 yeah each game since 3 has a "mascot" character for that game. 3 is aigis, 4 is teddie, and 5 is mainly morgana, but also joker whenever atlus feels like it.

Another great vid, Buns. Happy to have similar thoughts to yours about Reload. Wanted to shoutout Zeno Robinson as Junpei, making him more endearing than the OG.
I deeply love Persona 3. I have a giant Thanatos tattooed on my arm to remind me of the main theme of the game. I love it so much that I want anyone who might also love it to play it and enjoy it. But it was always hard to recommend, and became harder each year. I love P3 FES the way you love your first car: the dented rim reminds you of an ice slide, the cassette player rigged into an aux cord was a revelation, and every stain and tear in the seats has a story to tell. But I also know that, removed from those associations, it’d be hard to get you to take it for a spin, no matter how great I promised it was. It’s a beat up old car to you, even if it means the world to me. Remakes are hard. To successfully reach new audiences you have to almost by definition take away some of the things that define the game for the original audience. For those of us in love with the old car, it’s easy to insist it’s not the same ride if it doesn’t have the cigarette lighter in the dash, if it doesn’t have the exact same interior color, and if the drivers seat doesn’t wiggle over 80 mph. Is it the same car if you build an identical version out of 2024 parts? Absolutely not. You can’t recreate it exactly. But does it drive the same? Can it give you the same thrills it gave me, the same sense of freedom and perspective, the same chance to fall in love? Yes, I believe so. Don’t mistake the worn-in seats and manual windows for critical features: they mean the world to you now, but they’re not why you buy a car. Reload for me is a successful remake because it takes a journey I love with my entire heart and puts it in a new package, ready for a new generation to enjoy. I can hand it to a friend who I know will love it, and not worry about them bouncing off it because Yukari AI made them wipe to the floor boss for the fifth time. I still have my version of the car, and I can take it out anytime if I need the peculiarities of it, to feel like I’m home. But I’m thrilled to have new fans here, side by side, ready to gush about this game that WE now love. I’m glad this newer, shinier version of the game made you fall in love the same way I did on my PS2 emulator a decade and a half ago.
Your first car metaphor is wholly dependent on your presumption of the most critical value P3 offers. Namely, that you make an equivalent between the non-critical "word-in seats", "manual windows", etc. and elements that were present in P3Fes that are no longer present in P3R. That in of itself is a hard sell to me, because you're ascribing personal, subjective values to objective changes, and I may not necessarily agree with those attributions. What if I subjectively argue that the objective changes between P3Fes and P3R ARE in fact mission-critical to P3's success? The final cutscene in the game is a microcosm of this conundrum, based on what I've seen on internet discussion forums and the like. Would you argue that the ending cutscene in P3R still operates the same way it did in P3Fes despite the changes they made to that scene? Some may argue "yes" - that it managed to capture a meaning of finality, it carries the same themes/message regarding Death, etc. - but others may argue "no" - the awkward camera cuts and character running animations broke immersion, the script doesn't carry the same simplicity that made P3Fes' final cutscene so memorable and impactful, etc. If you ask me, those changes are not just non-critical - they are essential to the themes carried by P3's story, because the delivery and presentation here are mission-critical to ending. And of course, we can naturally debate about these changes until the end of time. Case in point, your first car metaphor doesn't really resonate with me here. I don't think you meant anything negative about P3Fes or anything here - far from it. And I share in your delight that new gamers are experiencing the P3 story, regardless of if it's through P3Fes, P3P, or P3R. But when you say "don't mistake the worn-in seats and manual windows for critical features; they mean the world to you now, but they're not why you buy a car", it sounds like you're trying to convince everyone that what they consider important to the P3 experience, informed by P3Fes, is not really important. Just... be wary of that implication in your first car metaphor.

Damn, this is absolutely crazy timing! I finished p3r a few weeks ago and am currently playing persona 5 royal. Persona 5 is absolutely one of my all time favourite games ever and I only started playing it because of your video about it. It genuinely helped me survive the darkest moment of my life and I have you to thank for that. While I did really enjoy p3r, I just prefer the story structure in persona 5 and that persona 5 tackles dark but real topics and that you can symbolically fight back against them when it's not always possible to do irl
I love your channel so much !!! You’re reviews helped me so much during dark times and your humor makes me wish I had a friend like you ❤ I hope all has been well and we keep seeing more of your videos :)
Just realise it's been 5 bucking months! Butters, bestie, make more content please, it's pleasant to listen to you yap on about things as I press the funny button in P5R on my Switch lite. *MYRIAD TRUTHS*
Getting all Social Links in P3 is not a relaxing process like in P5 I had notes. I had multiple tabs open to make sure i got character schedules right.
Yeah unlike persona 5 where as long you max up your social stats early, and max some certain links early, you fine. However in persona 3 reload, even with removing force romance and making Jr easier to max, it still hard to max up the social links. This is because persona 3 wasn't originally made to be max unless you do a new game plus
I'm mad because I didn't use guides and was THIS CLOSE to maxing out all of them and I would've if my stupid ass remembered sooner that winter break was a thing that exists...
I only played FES for the first time half a year ago and didn't really have a good time with it even though I tried very hard to enjoy it. Your video convinced me even more that Reload might just have fixed most of my issues with the OG and I can't wait to give it a try. Thank you so much for this fun video, Tyler! And I'm sorry if I'm getting too personal here, but seeing you share your happy relationship with your wife over the years has actually helped this scared gay disaster surrounded by straight people irl so much. You two inspired me and gave me the courage to ask out my own now-girlfriend and I couldn't be happier with my life. So thank you from the depths of heart. Your work means a lot to me and always will. Wishing you the best.
New buns video woop woop! First of all, one thing I really need to get out: Ken drinking his coffee black was not added by the localizers. It's in the JP Dub as well and it was in P3P too. There is a dorm dialogue where Ken asks FemC how she likes her coffee and in his reaction to her answer, he will state that he prefers black coffe. That aside... Very, very solid review, I think this is the closest I've seen to my own experience with the game (the biggest difference is that my Persona journey has been P4+P4Anime in my late teens → PQ in my early twenties → P5R doing Royal and then marathoning multiple entries finally including P3P and P3R from Spring this year until now bc I fell into a massive brainrot hole I might never be able to get out of). I've read/watched some critiques of Reload before and thus braced myself to find the game more meh, but ended up having a really good time with it! That's saying something considering I had just started a rerun of P3P to celebrate my birthday (I like to start a game at midnight to celebrate with the characters and stories I love) and then my friend whom I've been cosplaying P3 with just HANDED ME A COPY OF RELOAD a few hours later?? 🤣 So I literally played both games back to back. The reworked music being a little weaker (Especially Kimi no Kioku), the color palette being a little too oversaturated and the storytelling being reworked to be a little too on the nose in some rare instances (mainly in the opening cutscene) are my biggest gripes with the game ignoring the giant ✨female✨ elephant in the room. The latter however I can accept in the sense that I'd rather have a whole high quality rework of her version of the story with notable differences in cinematography to the male protagonist version, her own version of The Answer etc. than just something half-baked (pun semi-intended) tacked onto Reload and I'd like to think that that's why Atlus says including her is/was not possible. So yeah, imho people give this game way too much crap for not beinh fAItHfUl and ToO eAsY despite it being a really good entry in the overall catalogue of Persona and specifically Persona 3 games, ESPECIALLY considering how well they did with the voiced Social Links and Linked Episodes/Dorm Room activities. Didn't think I could love this cast any more than I did before but Reload was like: now you do 😘 Also, I only ever played the Japanese Dubs for both Reload and Portabe where - minus the Social Link characters - only Igor's VA changed (which you barely notice, it's UNCANNY), but it's all new recordings and they did an even better job than in the original, it's brilliant, ✨Chef's kiss✨, 💯 From what little I heard from both English Dubs, I think Reload significantly improved on all fronts, casting seems to be way more in line with what the JP cast feels like, new script saw some improvements and the acting also seems to have leveled up, so kudos to the localization team 👏

Still not over the insanity that was getting the game for my b-day, my friend is an absolute sweetheart and I cried a little ngl. We've been bonding over the series (specifically P3) and have recently being cosplaying together (Akihiko and FemC) so that certainly was one of the reasons, I guess 😊 Anyway, I hope you give the Japanese Dub a try if you have the chance! Getting used to different dubs can take a while, but Persona has really good Japanese voice acting overall, some of them so unique that it's difficult to imagine someone else in the roles. (Teddie/Kuma from P4 almost feels like a different character depending on the language) I switched to JP Dub as soon as I could, but I do admit that these days, I have the luxury of speaking the language and so I tend to play games just with the original voices in general. It's just a bit of a bummer that most of the English reviews don't really mention the OG dub, now that we have the option to choose 👀

I know some people are obsessed with FEMC but Portable was much much more than just her and many of the changes introduced there like the Tartarus rescue missions and Skill Cards did make it into Reload. The theme is also life not death.
10:54 - Truer words have never been uttered in the history of UA-cam. My introduction to P3 was reload and I already know that Koromaru belongs on the Mount Rushmore of video game dogs!
Definitely recommend it. My first P3 was also P3P. I loved the addition of the Shift mechanic (similar to the Baton Pass from P5) the most. It was my biggest frustration since P5 was my first Persona game.
P3 community: “We just want a definitive version of P3!” Atlus: “We’re remaking P3 with the answer only. No FeMC.” Modders: “Fine. Then I’ll do it myself.”
Hi there, someone who uses a LOT of Persona game balance mods and contributed one or two ideas to the Master Quest mod for P3R on GameBanana. Part of the issue with the idea that "RPGs should be fun more than they should be hard" is that P3R becomes less fun when you're just steamrolling through Tartarus with no nuance as early as the 5th Arcana Shadow. By the time you reach the final boss in Reload, you usually have all of your party members at max level and with their primary stats (like STR or EN or LU) at 99. The final boss is built up as this utterly undefeatable force of nature, but when you actually get to FIGHT the thing, most of the phases can be cleared simply by using Junpei's... well, _anything_ but ESPECIALLY his Theurgy. The way I envision Theurgy working ideally, is that everyone's meter should be reset to 0 and slowly built up after every fight, then use them as flashy finishers to end off every fight. Kind of like fighting game supers.
AustinSV is a beast! Love his videos. So refreshing to hear a positive take from a FES veteran. I never played FES, so I can't really speak to changes in tone or mechanics or have any nostalgia that could be ruined. In this day and age of digital distribution and so many options, I think developers are more conscious of being respectful of the players time. A game can be hard, yes, but it can't be complete RNG bullshit that you can't learn from. So, when remaking P3, I think the de-emphasizing of dungeon crawling was the right move. From what I've played on Portable, it's a slog and mostly filler. We love Persona because of the characters, so the additional character-oriented content makes for a better experience instead of more and more dungeon tedium. While there is no exhaustion mechanic, there is a soft-level cap for each block. You'll notice that as you level up, the amount of experience you earn actually decreases, but the game doesn't tell you. So, at worst, you can grind for as much money as you want, but you won't ever be in danger of being over-levelled by virtue of grinding a ton.
Thank you so much for this video Buns! I watched your entire playthrough though your side-channel (just like every single other playthrough of yours) and kept on wanting to comment as if I was in the chat; you made this game be a whole new experience for me, despite it being so familliar.
21:27 but its ON KEY tho, its just one semi tone lower, but its still on key, you can hear SLIIIGHT difference, but its bc its a semi tone, not a full key
Something I think people miss, that I missed as well, is why kissing ass in social links gives more points. Think about it, would Kenji like you more if you told him “it’s a bad idea, give up” or if you hype him up? He’s a teenager, he’s not going to think it’s a bad idea to date a teacher until reality slaps him in the face. And he’s not going to understand that you were acting in his best interests until that realization comes to him. So he won’t like it as much if you try to shoot him down.
When you said Mitsuru is secret a 20 something year old, i honestly took that as a spoiler and was waiting the entire game for her to reveal she wasn’t a teenager.
I think the main let down for me was the difficulty to be honest and let me preface I don't want persona to be a hardcore JRPG combat sim. I more-so kind of wanted some modularity when it came to mechanics in the same vain of P4G's exp sliders but with damage and percentages regarding theugry's or trait percentages. I know that's asking a lot but at least for me it would make the turn based section a lot better.
Mother buns video blessing me while doing a night shift gave me serotonin that unlocked my third eye to get through it. We making it out of the thirteenth hour with this one
I absolutely love what you said about the music!!! I was laughing the whole time when you mentioned the battle theme. Being a music teacher, I incorporate all of the persona music in my lessons, especially how each main game incorporates a major type of music p3: rap/rock p4: pop p5: jazz fusion. I really wish they could've gotten Yumi Kawamura to do the main vocals to the remake. I feel she did great in the original being able to sing the lyrics and give the game its heights.
That’s actually so cool. I think it’s great that you show the persona music in your lessons. I also like that each persona game has its own genre of music. I love them all! I hope your students enjoy your lessons. You seem like a cool teacher 👍🏽
I think one of the reasons Yumi didn't return for the OST is because her vocals have been struggling in recent years. Iirc she smokes a lot and during one of the live persona concerts you can hear her kind of struggling with Kimi no Kioku
FTR, I love this game, and I had so much fun playing it, but THANK YOU Buns for also hearing the mass destruction remix the way I did! Appreciate the side by side play of it as well!
I like how in the intro cutscene the camera stops and waits on someones bag with a pride pin on it Its like atlus is a confused but supportive dad pointing out a pride flag in a store window and going "eh? Eh??" Expectantly to you to show he knows what a gay person is and supports

I had tried to play P3 in the past but found the inability to control my party members weird and the fatigue system also not very fun so when a remake was announced I was very excited to finally be able to play the game and enjoy it, which I did! I played P5 og almost until the end of the game but then got distracted by other stuff and then played the port of P4 on modern consoles and some of Royal before P3R and really enjoyed it. P4's special to me since it was the first persona game I fully beat and if they remake 4 like how they did with 3 (upgraded visuals, sleeker/popping UI, modern persona sensibilities, QOL upgrades) I'll be even more pleased.

I realize there's no way to prove this, but I wouldn't be surprised if P3R was also influenced by Yakuza: Like a Dragon of all things. That game took the idea of Persona's social links and turned them into Drink Links but also the sheer amount of things you can find out about your friends by just walking around, playing darts and eating at restaurants is kinda wild. So the fact you actually have moments where you can just chill with your friends in this game is great.

I am not joking when I say that I have this phenomenon involving SuperButterBuns where whenever I remember their existence and how they haven't uploaded in a while, they literally upload the same day or the day after they have crossed my mind.
I have this exact phenomenon except with jontron, sometimes it's scary how often it happens.
Ur opinion sucks
My favorite part of P3 is that the animal sidekick doesn't speak
Funny enough, I read a theory that the non-human "pet" character is Aigis. And the fact that she appears in the dancing logo (when Morgana and Teddie appear in p5 and 4 dancing) proves it to me
@@LangostaV76 Atlus' based take on AI ethics? :OOO
@@LangostaV76 yeah each game since 3 has a "mascot" character for that game. 3 is aigis, 4 is teddie, and 5 is mainly morgana, but also joker whenever atlus feels like it.

BUNNIFER ITS 3 AM HERE!?

This bit fucking got me so good
I deeply love Persona 3.
We missed you! Always happy to see a video of you pop up in my feed 😁

While I did really enjoy p3r, I just prefer the story structure in persona 5 and that persona 5 tackles dark but real topics and that you can symbolically fight back against them when it's not always possible to do irl
never have i ever saw someone liked p5 more after playing the previous game(s)
I love your channel so much !!!
You’re reviews helped me so much during dark times and your humor makes me wish I had a friend like you ❤

Getting all Social Links in P3 is not a relaxing process like in P5
I had notes.
Yeah, I had to use a guide in Merciless to get everything including link episodes
I'm mad because I didn't use guides and was THIS CLOSE to maxing out all of them and I would've if my stupid ass remembered sooner that winter break was a thing that exists...
P4 is also rough but tbh I didn't manage it in 5 as well lol

Didn't think I could love this cast any more than I did before but Reload was like: now you do 😘
Also, I only ever played the Japanese Dubs for both Reload and Portabe where - minus the Social Link characters - only Igor's VA changed (which you barely notice, it's UNCANNY), but it's all new recordings and they did an even better job than in the original, it's brilliant, ✨Chef's kiss✨, 💯
From what little I heard from both English Dubs, I think Reload significantly improved on all fronts, casting seems to be way more in line with what the JP cast feels like, new script saw some improvements and the acting also seems to have leveled up, so kudos to the localization team 👏

@@raphaelkgh218 Why, thank you! I tried so hard not to ramble, but I really just like the series so much, hehe!
Still not over the insanity that was getting the game for my b-day, my friend is an absolute sweetheart and I cried a little ngl. We've been bonding over the series (specifically P3) and have recently being cosplaying together (Akihiko and FemC) so that certainly was one of the reasons, I guess 😊
Anyway, I hope you give the Japanese Dub a try if you have the chance! Getting used to different dubs can take a while, but Persona has really good Japanese voice acting overall, some of them so unique that it's difficult to imagine someone else in the roles. (Teddie/Kuma from P4 almost feels like a different character depending on the language)
I switched to JP Dub as soon as I could, but I do admit that these days, I have the luxury of speaking the language and so I tend to play games just with the original voices in general. It's just a bit of a bummer that most of the English reviews don't really mention the OG dub, now that we have the option to choose 👀
@@SuzuStarlight Nice!!! I will look to watch a Japanese dub playthrough and hear the japanese VA's!!! And i once randomly stumbled upon a video with Teddie's Japanese VA voice in it, and i was very surprised!!! Anyways, i like Teddie, thanks for your detailed reply!!! I love reading long, detailed and noteworthy comments like yours when i have the time!!!
ah, fellow jp dub enjoyer and i like how you’re being a fair instead of being too nice or too harsh like others. what you say here is pretty much the same thought i had with the exception of reload’s kimi no kioku being weaker.
As an OG Vanilla Persona 3 fan who was brought into the series via that, and Digital Devil Saga when they were modern -- this iteration of the story, and gameplay for me, is the best hands down.

I know some people are obsessed with FEMC but Portable was much much more than just her and many of the changes introduced there like the Tartarus rescue missions and Skill Cards did make it into Reload. The theme is also life not death.

Persona 3 on the psp was my introduction to the series~ great seeing it pop up again, ill need to try this version~
Definitely recommend it. My first P3 was also P3P. I loved the addition of the Shift mechanic (similar to the Baton Pass from P5) the most. It was my biggest frustration since P5 was my first Persona game.

P3 community: “We just want a definitive version of P3!”
Atlus: “We’re remaking P3 with the answer only. No FeMC.”
Modders: “Fine. Then I’ll do it myself.”
I can't wait to play this. The idea of spending more time with these characters... Makes me happy.
Honestly insane how little you’ll upload but all your loyal fans will come running. I remember watching your “for beginner” videos back in the day
Babe wake up another superbutterbuns vid
YUKO'S VA IS AMAZINGGGG

Something I think people miss, that I missed as well, is why kissing ass in social links gives more points. Think about it, would Kenji like you more if you told him “it’s a bad idea, give up” or if you hype him up? He’s a teenager, he’s not going to think it’s a bad idea to date a teacher until reality slaps him in the face. And he’s not going to understand that you were acting in his best interests until that realization comes to him. So he won’t like it as much if you try to shoot him down.

always nice seeing a Buns upload. But dont worry Buns, I love both your old vids and this one lol
The Kermit picture edit at ********'s funeral scene caught me off guard LOL.

!! omg i remember when i first got into persona back in like 2015 and i watched ur videos on p3 & p4, so excited to watch this
I absolutely love what you said about the music!!!
You dropped thos video like two days after i beat this game on Merciless, good timing
0:22 Funnily enough i did so as well.
FTR, I love this game, and I had so much fun playing it, but THANK YOU Buns for also hearing the mass destruction remix the way I did! Appreciate the side by side play of it as well!

Its like atlus is a confused but supportive dad pointing out a pride flag in a store window and going "eh? Eh??" Expectantly to you to show he knows what a gay person is and supports
most unrealistic part of the game, you really think japanese teenagers in 2009( when the game is set) were walking around with rainbow pins?

I had tried to play P3 in the past but found the inability to control my party members weird and the fatigue system also not very fun so when a remake was announced I was very excited to finally be able to play the game and enjoy it, which I did! I played P5 og almost until the end of the game but then got distracted by other stuff and then played the port of P4 on modern consoles and some of Royal before P3R and really enjoyed it. P4's special to me since it was the first persona game I fully beat and if they remake 4 like how they did with 3 (upgraded visuals, sleeker/popping UI, modern persona sensibilities, QOL upgrades) I'll be even more pleased.

just wanted to let u know this is my first video ive seen from u and the bit at 20:21 almost made me choke on my coffee thank you i love this
I realize there's no way to prove this, but I wouldn't be surprised if P3R was also influenced by Yakuza: Like a Dragon of all things. That game took the idea of Persona's social links and turned them into Drink Links but also the sheer amount of things you can find out about your friends by just walking around, playing darts and eating at restaurants is kinda wild. So the fact you actually have moments where you can just chill with your friends in this game is great.
