Dave, sorry if it was answered later in the video or in the comments already, but what camera were you using when you had both the G10 and G30 on the bench? The video and audio quality were nearly identical, so it must be something almost equally high-quality, not that $10 Chinese camcorder! :-)
Would be really interested to know what the difference is on the battery. A teardown/hack of the handshake between the camera and battery would be great to show how wank the change is.
Probably the same battery, just different Version number in the I2C eeprom. Maybe it can be reprogrammed (if it is reprogrammable). Hack a Canon Battery video?
Nice review, Dave. You should check if there is a way to turn off the display in the viewfinder if you don't use it. It could save a little extra battery power.
My basic HF-R300 also uses chipped batteries, but it pops up a warning on startup that it can't read the battery and asks if you want to continue. It's unfortunate (but not surprising) that Canon completely locks out the unchipped batteries now. People would be more likely to buy genuine batteries if they didn't cost a ridiculous amount.
EEVblog I design a life-sustaining medical ventilator at the copmpany I work; we decided to use an chiped Li-Ion battery pack, so that nobody would be able to use foreign batteries. The reason why: when you build an Li-Ion Battery, you can tweak over 1k dfferent details during the manufacturing process. Every time you change one detail you get a battery with slightly different characteristics. The exact characteristics of our battery are known by the battery charger circuit which is integrated inside the ventilator. There is a very small chance, that a battery with improper characteristics can burst into flames during the charging process! And that could lead to the dead of the patient. When you search through the web, you can find some reports where mobile phones burst into flames because of cheap batteries. That COULD be one reason for Canons decision. --sorry for my bad english
Kodachi123 It's a high end consumer product, not a life sustaining device or a critical application like a backup battery in a flight control system. Making sure a life critical component is genuine and reliable is right, putting chip on inkjet cartridge or exchangeable battery is BULLSHIT. Imagine if they put some marker so your stuck with the same tire or the same brand of fuel for your car ?
I am actually saving up for a Canon HF G30 because I want to take my first steps into doing some serious cinematography. One of the questions for the G30: which batteries will last longer on the camcorder?
Hello Dave, the description is wrong, it says : Dave reviews the Canon HF G10 Camcorder and compares it with his HF G10 for his blogging purposes. Instead of Dave reviews the Canon HF G30 Camcorder and compares it with his HF G10 for his blogging purposes.
Didn't you share a picture of one of those "pro" cameras on Twitter? They have that handle thing in the top. Btw: what do you use to film the other camera?
"... and some software that nobody ever uses',... I was tidying my desk recently, and I found a bunch of similar disks for old cameras and camcorders,... still sealed :-)
Could you please tell me if the Canon HF G30 can place a display on the screen that records Hours Minutes and Seconds so that the Hours Minutes and Seconds are seen on the screen with the time and day? ... The reason I'm asking is because in order to Record in a Federal Courtroom, you need a camera capable of recording "Seconds" in addition to the Hours and Minutes. ... Do you know of any Digital Cameras that do record Seconds, and then Plays those same Time settings when transferred to another device? Price is not a problem.
7:07 Dave, why would anyone want internal storage on a camera? If you save some footage on the internal memory and something happens to the camera then you lose the footage (unless you find someone who would recover the data from the flash chip, but even that sounds like a pain in the ass). With a memory card you just pop it out of the camera and put it in a safe place.
EEVblog Dave, I wonder - now that most computer monitors are 60fps and the target media is youtube, would it make sense to shoot 30fps instead of 25fps (getting a U.S. edition for the next camera) ?
10:15 I think they've only taken precautions to avoid the explosion of non original batteries, so they've included some sort of validation chip in newer batteries, so could be a market move, but mainly a safety move ;-D
Dave, can you share your thoughts on why you chose a Camcorder vs a DSLR for video? I mean, the DSLR video modes are quite awesome nowadays and you can get really good lowlight capabilities there. Is the workflow vastly different? I don't think so? Or is it just that you're used to the camcorder and not to a DSLR?
One of the commenters on here said that Dave has spoken adamantly against having a DSLR, but hasn't really explained the reason. I don't know shit about them really myself. I wanted a camera that also had camcorder ability but was mainly for pictures to use to make electronic device repair articles. I bought a Fujifilm SL1000. It's a good camera and takes pretty pic's for a cheaper priced camera, but it doesn't take very good close-ups. I may not be using it right either. But I have a digital microscope for close-ups anyway.
I've explained this many times. It is the small things and DSLR's as video cameras have always sucked at. Perhaps the absolute latest ones have all the problems licked, but not the last time I looked. Simple stuff like continuous and silent autofocus while zooming, proper VU audio meter on the screen, zebra stripes, focus peaking display, fully articulating display, infinite recording time (many are limited to say 20min so the sensor doesn't overheat), external mic input (common now, but hasn't always been so), menus and video features designed for easy access and use instead of being buried in a menu somewhere. The ease of and extended battery, the form factor, and probably many others I can't recall now. You'll notice that not once did I mention image quality there. I'm not shooting a feature film, bokeh is my enemy, I shoot and edit several videos a week with hundreds of clips, it's the little things that count to my workflow productivity, and you can only appreciate this is you shoot as much video as I do on a daily basis. It's easy for people to say use DSLR, but until you actually do the business it's hard to know what really matters.
EEVblog, just in case you were not aware, the 3rd party 'magic lantern' firmware (www.magiclantern.fm) exists for most canon DSLRs and would solve a number of the issues you mention. I totally get that you need the right tool for the job though.
I got the XA20... and I didn't have a previous battery base to complain about. The camera learns the capacity of the new battery and gives you capacity down to the minute.. not sure if the other one would do that. One really neat feature is the Remote capability... get one of those tripod-handle remotes (Manfrotto makes a good one) and you don't have to use the (admittedly touchy) zoom rocker.
The rechargeable change is common on new models, as to increase revenues, just to make more $$$ out of accessories sales, as they are usually very expensive, compared to performance...For example for the cost of one battery for this one i can buy some 20+ best grade AA recharge cells....
They released new firmware for my 7D last year. I was surprised they would do that for a product that old but I'm so glad they did. They even added some new functionality. I don't know if they do the same for camcorders.
On their higher-end cameras and camcorders they do. Cheaper stuff they don't really care about. The 5D mark 3 is a famous example where they released the camera prematurely with a lot of missing software features, then later claimed they added lots and lots of stuff with a firmware upgrade that should have been in the camera to begin with. But at the end of the day I'm still glad that Canon cares about its firmware. A camera can have a fantastic lens and body, but if the software is not responsive it'll be a pain in the ass to use, I've always had a great feeling using canon stuff
Wow! As a Vixia HF G20 owner, I understand everything you went over. Looks like a nice upgrade, but the battery issue is just B.S. and some of the other small inperfections should have been addressed. If I was a new Canon buyer, I'd go with this latest model. I love my HF G20, and am not considering upgrading, I'll keep an eye on Canon over the next 10 years. When I take the next step up, it will most likely be something 4k. Thats many years away. Thank you for posting this very informative and fun video. Keep up the good work! SBF
The HF 25 version had a handy hard plastic flip up flap under the hand strap to access HDMI Output and Remote for plugging in LANC Control, with the Mic plug socket easily accessible near the front offside of the camera body, which meant for recording Rugby Games, you could plug in the audio from a ref mic set into the camera Mic socket and access the Remote for LANC control when on a tripod with Video Head, and take HDMI Output to feed into a Laptop for Live Streaming without any crappy plastic flap floating about at the side of the camera body, for a prosumer model camera that is crappy design.
I don't really think this is that much of an improvement from the HF G10, the previous camera. The sensor is still pretty small, built-in non-exchangeable lens still sucks (barrel distortion), no 4k video mode (BIG miss, lots of manufacturers are stepping into this, even phones can do it), no USB3 connectivity or thunderbolt or any sort of modern data connection, removal of internal storage, pretty poor battery life on stock battery, software-lock of 3rd party batteries, and so much more.. The only real improvement I'm seeing is the increased screen resolution. Don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic quality camcorder, though they could have improved it a lot more than they have already! Oh and it's a Canon DV Digic 4 processor. The regular digics are only in dslrs.
I still think you need another spectrum of light as some of the black items on your bench appear very dark. EDIT ITS YOUR EXPOSURE! SET IT A TAD HIGHER PLS DAVE
The SD card issue when it doesn't record to the card when on record mode could occur on the G30, the SD card will go into Read only mode, meaning the files can be copied to a flash drive, hard drive whatever, but you won't be able to write to the SD card. My suggestion, but a second SD card into the Camera and dual record just incase
Great review! I would love to have a new camera like this. But that would require me to upgrade (ie buy a whole new) premiere pro, not to mention buy new batteries, etc. Those hidden costs more than double the real cost to me. If Canon want to sell more hardware, they should make every effort to ensure backward compatibility of codecs and batteries, etc. Interestingly, Canon routinely stop producing batteries for 'old' cameras, which means that the user is forced into the aftermarket. I wish manufacturers would understand that long term support is a critical factor for their reputation.
Good review, well done! I own this G30 camcorder and I consider it to be a very useful toy to have. I use it to record outdoor sports so the high frame rate is necessary. I also use the cinematic mode when recording community events where there is no fast action. FYI; I have some older battery packs from older Canon cameras, they all work in my new G30, and vice versa. No problems with them at all. When it comes to shooting high quality video, the G30 does the job. I'm happy with this camera and all its features.
even a fair bit of the pro kit doesn't have instant playback, they hit you with a video assist module or most pro end records off device and uses inbuilt store for safety copy. agree totally about the battery situation, pure marketing office evil.
like every single dslr that shoots video can go to the last-recorded video with one button pressed, with audio, it's not that hard to implement in software
I just have a little gripe with your new-ish behind the new bench view: the video is overexposed a bit or the lighting is weird (look at your face), and the audio quality is kinda lacking. Don't take this as a complaint or anything like that, I absolutely love your show. (Constructive criticism, perhaps?)
dinkc64 Yes, I had the exposure a bit high on the new Canon. The problem with guessing and basing on the LCD screen instead of full replay on the PC screen.
Oh hey, I have an idea for your to post on your website or even on youtube. You should make a "Wish List" type page of thing's you'd love to have that people may find in a garage sale, thrift store, or that people just have laying around. Ide personally try to keep them in mind for when I'm shopping. Ben doesn't have a wish list, but he comments about things he'd love to have. And subscribers send him some things that's he's asked for and has been exhilarated in the fact people had these things and sent them to him.
Tomas Gibbs I don't need better mics, my Videomic Pro is plenty good enough. If for some reason I do need XLR inputs then I can buy a much cheaper external box to mount on top.
Surprised about the battery incomparability. I've used 3 generations of consumer cannon cameras and the batteries have always remained the same. I think they have shot themselves in the foot with that one. However, it could be the same as what Nikon did with their DSLRs? Nikon added an encrypted micro-controller, so you got the same thing, you could physically power up the device no problem, but then it would tell you it was not a genuine battery. It actually turned out to be a good thing as it was Nikon trying to stop counterfeit batteries, and the market was rife with "100% genuine ebay special" fake batteries. I don't mind after-market batteries (such as Phottix) but who wants to risk their lives with fake lithium batteries
OK I KNOW THIS IS PROBERLY NOT SAFE BUT IF I GOT TWO LAPTOP POWERSUPLYS THE SAME AMPS AND VOLTAGE AND IF I PUT RED TO RED AND BLACK TO BLACK AND PUT A CONNETOR ON THE END WOULD IT WORK BECAUSE I HAVE TWO LAPTOP CHAGER AT 3.5AMPS I NEED A 6AMP TO 7 AMPS WOULD IT WORK
ricksite, I doubt it is ALL Australians (Dave is the only one I have come across). The Oxford English phonetic spelling of the letter 'H' is 'AITCH'. I can only assume that saying 'HAITCH' has gained some ground due to some unenlightened individuals believing that saying 'AITCH' is common because the 'H' has been dropped. When I hear 'HAITCH' used it both irritates and makes me smile! I don't feel superior witnessing bad pronunciation but it is irksome knowing that perhaps I may be thought 'common' when, in fact, my pronunciation is correct. Ignorance is bliss I guess. You can't drop the 'H' from 'AITCH' - there isn't one. Adding an 'H' simply sounds affected to me.
If these models were more popular with the modding community, I bet someone would release a modded firmware to fix those issues. If it uses 802.11n wifi, then it should be able to do 60-80mbit/s with a strong signal. If canon wanted, they could have added a feature where it would record to an FTP server in full HD at 30+mbit/s and then use the SD card as a buffer if for any reason, the wifi slows or drops, e.g., someone decides to run their microwave with the door opened or something.
That battery thing is bullshit, the battery can clearly work cause the thing boots up long enough to complain at you. I'd be tempted to figure out how this lockout works and bypass it.
@Neil Robinson: I'm not sure why youtube won't let me reply to your comment. So I'll just post here: I think that the Word "retarded" has absorbed a different meaning and thus in my opinion it is absolutely okay to use. Other then sentences such as "that's so gaaaaay" that are really meant offensively towards homosexuals (which is more then dumb) So long...
RandyDarkshade I've banned him twice before on my channel, and will do so again. He keeps creating accounts it seems. He's also been banned from other electronics channels.
Looks like a very good spec camcorder. I'm starting off with a Sony CX-320 with high capacity battery and charger. I use Samsung 16GB SD cards. I have the very compact Sony case for the camcorder, SD card, spare battery and USB lead. It's incredibly small and light. This replaces a Sanyo Exacta that I purchased for my RYA competent crew course. I was disappointed in the Sanyo and sold it after the trip. Which? magazine generally recommends Sony and Panasonic. I prefer Sony.
Camcorders haven't been worth the money for a few years now. A DSLR is a much better camera with a far superior sensors and your can bring your lenses with you when you upgrade the body.
I have a JVC HD camcorder and it has NEVER worked since the day I got it.... IDK why i keep it lying around when I really should tear it down on camera ( irony there i think) or take a hammer to it....
DRM'd proprietary batteries that are not compatible across the OEM's physically compatible products... that is pretty lousy. Guess they could not be bothered to re-design the battery shoe when they can arbitrarily disable otherwise compatible battery re-use by software.
I need to get something like this. I don't really like my Canon camera it is one of those credit card small type of camera. I should have done more home work in choosing my HD camera but I basically did a first one that did full HD 1080P and bought it. I hate it I even bought a ton of rechargeable batteries for it as the battery life sucks on it. And the batteries I got just happen to be Wasabi ones. xD My craptastic camera is a Canon PowerShot ELPH 110 HS. Is the one shown a $2K price range? Which is kind of why I did the cheaper $200 Canon I believe it is 24Mps MPeg4 recordings if I remember right. I do a ton of video and I am constantly swearing at my cam as it always turns off or low batteries on me when I am shooting something and go wtf I just replaced the battery with a new one or I could have sworn I did. xD I do have to say it is a big step up from my Sony cam that I originally got for just still photos but later used it for youtube videos. So that is the only good thing is the video quality is better the the old Sony that only did HQ and no HD. And the old Sony only had a Mono mic for me I like Stereo mic and for what I payed for it back in the day I was a bit miffed that the mic was only Mono for the video stuff. :| But I think my Canon is stereo but I could be wrong. xD
I've had this camera for a while now and never realized all of the features until watching your video! Thanks!
Dave, sorry if it was answered later in the video or in the comments already, but what camera were you using when you had both the G10 and G30 on the bench? The video and audio quality were nearly identical, so it must be something almost equally high-quality, not that $10 Chinese camcorder! :-)

"Dave reviews the Canon HF G10 Camcorder and compares it with his HF G10"
This shouldn't take long them !
Excelente cámara, gracias por mostrarla.
Saludos.
The low profile MP4 can be good for proxy editing in sony vegas.

Best AV-gear review I have ever watched. Tumbs up!
Thanks!
Thank you for the awesome review.
Shame about the battery. Guess i'll have to keep my tow G10 for a while...

Hi, I bought a JVC GY-HM100E camcorder. Do you have any experience on this camera as I would value your opinion. I paid £700GBP for it second hand.
Are you using the built-in mic Dave? It makes your voice sound a bit whiny...
Good job bro.... A really very helpful review.

Wasn't a teardown vid.
I know.. but you never know what Dave might decide to do!
"Don't turn it on, take it apart!" Will we at least get a teardown of the HF-G10? Or maybe an older model that you've used in the past?
i find it interesting how in the description you write in 3rd person
Dave likes to write in the third person.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't upgrade from the G20 unless you really needed the WiFi remote feature.
do you have a sony camcorder Dave?
I just got a NEX-VG30 real cheap. It's not that great compared to the Canon in terms of usability.
. Sony is the King of proprietary connectors! Some of their stuff is good. Sony has had some good ideas. I love the new camera though.
spongebob7285
They are the king of expensive proprietary memory cards too.

HAHAH I just noticed that you used a term I use daily "Sweet FA" hahaha love it man
Next time you should consider a DSLR. They seem to be pretty much standard for UA-cam content creators nowdays.
dave has always rejected a DSLR. ive never heard him give a good reason for rejecting it, but he seems adamant.
adhd engineering
I've discussed it extensively over the years, and no one has yet shown me a DSLR that can do the job I want with the same ease.
Not all youtubers content are the same. My tech videos can have quite different requirements to others who produce many studio quality productions.
For some reason I kept waiting for you to take it apart.

Watch the extended version of this review, it's in there.
You should record in 50FPS, and then downmix it (if you dont already)

Money talks. If people quit buying their products, then they'll stop the crap.
I'm happy with this camera and all its features.
even a fair bit of the pro kit doesn't have instant playback, they hit you with a video assist module or most pro end records off device and uses inbuilt store for safety copy. agree totally about the battery situation, pure marketing office evil.
like every single dslr that shoots video can go to the last-recorded video with one button pressed, with audio, it's not that hard to implement in software
good that you got some audiofoam :)
EEV Drinking game: Drink everytime Dave says "Professional Video Blogger".
Get proper wasted ;)
"Dave reviews the Canon HF G10 Camcorder and compares it with his HF G10 for his blogging purposes."
i will go for Lumix GH4
Oh hey, I have an idea for your to post on your website or even on youtube. You should make a "Wish List" type page of thing's you'd love to have that people may find in a garage sale, thrift store, or that people just have laying around. Ide personally try to keep them in mind for when I'm shopping. Ben doesn't have a wish list, but he comments about things he'd love to have. And subscribers send him some things that's he's asked for and has been exhilarated in the fact people had these things and sent them to him.
Interesting idea, would have to think of some stuff!
Very cool be sure to let us all know!
If I were you I would have gone with the xa20 so it gives you expandability for xlr inputs and better mics and for having a shotgun mic on a c stand.
Tomas Gibbs I don't need better mics, my Videomic Pro is plenty good enough. If for some reason I do need XLR inputs then I can buy a much cheaper external box to mount on top.
EEVblog Fair enough i would have thought for your new set that a over head shotgun mic would have been optimal.
Could ask Canon how their battery compatibility lines with their own environmental policy ...
Maybe google glasses will replace this one day for you Dave.
OK I KNOW THIS IS PROBERLY NOT SAFE BUT IF I GOT TWO LAPTOP POWERSUPLYS THE SAME AMPS AND VOLTAGE AND IF I PUT RED TO RED AND BLACK TO BLACK AND PUT A CONNETOR ON THE END WOULD IT WORK BECAUSE I HAVE TWO LAPTOP CHAGER AT 3.5AMPS I NEED A 6AMP TO 7 AMPS WOULD IT WORK
I didn't know Australians pronounced "H" as "haitch". In the US, it is pronounced as "aitch".
ricksite,
I doubt it is ALL Australians (Dave is the only one I have come across).
Nice review :-)
Don't turn it on! Take it apaaaart*
*not if i have paid for it.
I personally like to shoot video with canon DSLRs.
Dont switch it on take it apart. Come on Dave.
@Neil Robinson: I'm not sure why youtube won't let me reply to your comment. So I'll just post here: I think that the Word "retarded" has absorbed a different meaning and thus in my opinion it is absolutely okay to use. Other then sentences such as "that's so gaaaaay" that are really meant offensively towards homosexuals (which is more then dumb)
So long...
RandyDarkshade See my comment about this above ^^^^^^
RandyDarkshade only time can tell! :P

I've banned him twice before on my channel, and will do so again. He keeps creating accounts it seems. He's also been banned from other electronics channels.
It's inevitable the internet troll will troll.. No matter the content or environment they troll on.
If an internet troll has to keep making new accounts to troll people on certain channels then imo that troll needs a life.
Haha... 10:15 Great Dave - thank you!! Needed a *roflmao*
i want the xa10 20 or25
Well said Bubba J.
Great review!
"Professional UA-cam Blogger" is that any Oxymoron?
Hell yeah, it is, but is born from stupidity here. Lmao Dave.
What are you talking about flightsim? How much pro shooting have you done?
LifeBloodMarketing Pro shooting on a camcorder? That's one hilarious joke.
I have a canon t3i plying back video dos greet
Ok, flaps, .. we have an old Canon camcorder, and with everything plugged in, and all the flaps open, it looks like we dropped it and broke it.
TYPO ALERT:
"Dave reviews the Canon HF G10 Camcorder and compares it with his HF G10"
That would have been a pretty stupid video.
DRM'd proprietary batteries that are not compatible across the OEM's physically compatible products... that is pretty lousy. Guess they could not be bothered to re-design the battery shoe when they can arbitrarily disable otherwise compatible battery re-use by software.
Daniel Sauvageau Yeah, if you are going to piss people off for a money grab, might as well do it the easiest way possible!
nice camcorder :)
And the batteries I got just happen to be Wasabi ones. xD
My craptastic camera is a Canon PowerShot ELPH 110 HS.
Is the one shown a $2K price range?
Which is kind of why I did the cheaper $200 Canon I believe it is 24Mps MPeg4 recordings if I remember right.
I do a ton of video and I am constantly swearing at my cam as it always turns off or low batteries on me when I am shooting something and go wtf I just replaced the battery with a new one or I could have sworn I did. xD
I do have to say it is a big step up from my Sony cam that I originally got for just still photos but later used it for youtube videos.
So that is the only good thing is the video quality is better the the old Sony that only did HQ and no HD.
And the old Sony only had a Mono mic for me I like Stereo mic and for what I payed for it back in the day I was a bit miffed that the mic was only Mono for the video stuff. :|
But I think my Canon is stereo but I could be wrong. xD
Now take it apart.
neat.
take a shot of alcohol every he says fantastic.
professional youtube video blogger.... you said it twice.. no one likes a show off. unsubscribing
don`t review it, take it apart!!!
Don't turn it on, take it apart
I wish this guy wouldn't be so PC and tell it like he thinks it should be.
Don't turn it on! Take it apart!!!!!
On the battery incompatibility, typical nickel-and-dime-you Sony.
Please don't use the term "Retarded" it is very offensive.
