  • Camcorders are an obsession of mine. Especially the SMALL ones. These are my most favorite camcorders that I use a lot, even though I have tons of full frame cameras, cinema cameras, super 35 cameras, I just love camcorders! They don't even have to be 1" sensors or even 4K. I love 1 2/3" sensors. Did I say I love camcorders? I love camcorders! Especially the small lightweight consumer ones. And yes you can get a blurry background with camcorders. yes even with small sensor camcorders. Which ones are my favorite? Well, Panasonic VX981, Canon Vixia G70, Sony CX405, Sony AX700, SonyZ90V. Most of these are 4K. I explain why in this video and show all kinds of video footage samples. Enjoy!

      @@MarkusPix that’s awesome! Hey, question for you real quick. Do you know how to tell if a camcorder has a constant aperture? Lately I’ve discovered that this info usually isn’t in an owner manual. My guess is that the higher end ones do but it would be nice if this sort of info was advertised. I’m on the market for one that can maintain f1.8 through out the zoom. Any suggestions?

    I have used Canon Camcorders for decades. The XF400 & 405 (and GX10) had a 1" sensor (now they have the XA75 but only does 30fps vs 60) and they are SOOOO much better than the 1 2/3 sensors. Sadly they stopped making them so I jumped to the XF605 and adore everything about it!

      Thanks for your reply.
      I tried looking at the specifications on the Panasonic website but each have a different type of webpage (also not easy to look at on mobile) so I couldn't see any differences...
      I've just thought.. Is the frame rate different due to mains HZ 60 in USA= 30 + 60 FPS and 50hz in UK= 25 + 50 FPS...
      Real thing is do you recommend the 980? I've seen them secondhand £300-£400.
      I have a Sony 405 which Markus recommended.. very good stabilisation, zoom 60x mechanical and 350x electronic, 1080p & 9mp stills, good wide angle lens etc.. stereo audio, lots of functions (which are semi automatic, it's really difficult to mess up) or full auto (I use this as I am filming as things actually happen), trying to set-up YT chanel.. I really like it.
      Only negative is mic socket.
      I would like a second camera and Markus recommended the 981.
      Any things to look for when secondhand?

    Great video and information. I have two of the Sony 405s. Great little camera for the price. Because they are so light in weight, it is best to have at least a small tripod attached to them if you are filming with zoom long distance to help stabilize and reduce video shake. I turned off the digital zoom and just use the optical as the video becomes too grainy in digital. I actually cut the side out of a paint can plastic top and glued it to the top of the camera for a sun shade. I used Shoe Goo cement sold to repair rubber sole shoes and boots. Thanks for the review.

    My only gripe with most of the 4K camcorders you showed is that they top out at 30FPS in 4K mode. When you're filming action (sports or other fast movement) or if you want to add some extra stabilization in post then shooting at 60FPS with a high shutter speed makes a *world* of difference to the resulting footage. If you're looking for a camcorder that does 4K @ 60FPS then you'll be paying more and it's likely to be bigger/heavier. I opted for the Panasonic HC-X1500 because it was the lightest 4K/60 camcorder I could find at any price and although it's far from perfect I do like the extra functionality you get for the price.
    I'm surprised that more vloggers aren't using the small VX981 or CX405 though... they're a much better option (IMHO) than the more common (and more expensive) vlogging cameras so often used. Hell, I've even been known to vlog with my HCX1500 but to do that requires that you've got really strong arms and shoulders 🙂

    • @martinXY
      @martinXY 8 місяців тому

      I couldn't agree more. In Australia, the Legria/Vixia HF G70 is 4k 25/30p for A$1890 rrp. Heading up the price tree all the way to the top of the handhelds gets us the Canon XA75 for $4350 rrp. And it's still 4K 25/30p 4:2:0 8bit, shooting and output.
      Sony is the same. Just to show how dire it is, Sony is still selling the HXR-NX5R (HD, not 4k) which was first released in 2016. It is an update of the NX5, which was released in 2010. These things are not updated often. Still love my camcorders, though.

    • @michaelbell75
      @michaelbell75 8 місяців тому +4

      60fps is overrated and way overused. I know two professional videographers who shoot high school sports and both shoot in 4K30. Anyone doing cinematic video is usually shooting at 24fps. I very rarely use 60fps.

    • @martinXY
      @martinXY 8 місяців тому +1

      @@michaelbell75 It’s more about having the option to use it. I’ll keep doing 25p on my camcorders because I have to, but it bugs me that 60p is everywhere for not-very-much, but no-one is putting into new camcorders. They must still be using the really old processors.

    • @xjet
      @xjet 8 місяців тому +3

      @@michaelbell75 If you want to do any stabilization of scenes involving movement then you have to use high shutter speeds. If you use high shutter speeds then you have to do high frame rates or you just get a really weird smeary effect. If you're going to shoot in 24/30FPS in daylight conditions then you're also going to need ND filters and remember to set the shutter to 180 degrees or you won't get enough motion blur and then any kind of panning or fast movement looks decidedly unnatural due to the staccato effect this creates. Suddenly you're no longer "point and shoot" with your camcorder. Higher framerates are far more forgiving of automatic shutter settings.

    • @michaelbell75
      @michaelbell75 8 місяців тому +1

      @@xjet Right. Filmmakers everywhere have been shooting in 24fps for many decades and doing it quite well. There is not a single film you watch shot at 60fps, even action films. 60fps looks awkward unless its slowed down and I dont know anyone who slows all their footage down. It's maybe like 10% of what most people shoot. Im sure Markus would have some useful info on this subject.

    The CX-405 you recommended a couple years ago is still going strong for me--neat to see it still made the 2024 list. 📹 I don't need a super-cam, but if I happen to outgrow it, I know exactly which video I'm coming back to.

      I got the 405 because Markus recommended it.
      Have you found the second battery compartment..
      The plastic bit has hooks so the best way is to remove the little screw below the power cord, open the battery compartment and remove battery.. then the back, which is clipped in lifts from the screw side but try all round, take your time.. once off.. you will see the clips, push them in and slide the plastic out...
      There is also a external controller to buy that plugs in below the handle.. all I know about it so far is it can keep the shutter open..
      I got a 40.5 UV filter which fits into the grove around the lens, ms polymer or possibly silicon is a non permanent way of fixing it which generates a thread for ND filters etc..
      I've filmed Jupiter's Moon's.. a little blurry.. need a clear sky.. but fun to do, you will need to play with the settings.. I filmed again 3 or 4 days after only to discover Ganymede was the other side of Jupiter... turns out it goes round in 7 day's, which is quick..

      I also got the 405 two years ago because Markus was over the top excited about it :)
      I was secretly hoping that he was still keeping it in the list but no...time moves forward.
      I bought an old school 2011 cinema camera last week out of bordeom for $600 a Canon C300PL without a lens.
      I wanted the EF mount but had to get the PL mount and then realized I didn't budget for a used Sony $800 lens.
      So if anyone has a $100 Pl lens even with scratches I would buy it just to see this old girl' working.
      Ps I love Markus channel but this lockdown thru me into a 2 year funk of procrastination haha

Here's how to enable face-detect autofocus on the Sony AX43 (i.e. FDR AX43 or AX43A) so that it doesn't go out of focus like many cameras do when this feature is not enabled: Menu --> Camera/Mic --> Face --> Face Detection --> ON. As a cameraman of over 30 years, also a masters degree in media psychology I sometimes wonder why people are obsessed with the “blurry” background.
    It has its place but only when the scene dictates, and usually never.
    People who use this usually have no idea why they are using it, other than they have seen others use it.
    Watch classic movies and see how cinematography rarely used it, but they used wides, mediums for more info that the brain needs to understand the scene.

I like Orson Welles films, Sergio Leone movies, Terence Fisher Hammer films from the 60's and Coppola's RUMBLE FISH, all of which have deep focus galore and little to zero bokeh to worry about. I also like Jess Franco and Nicolas Roeg films, each of which lean extra hard on using handheld zooms. This reminds me of DoF adapters that used to exist in the 80s and 90s for television cameras and its a bit of a shame they went out of fashion, its essentially a projection lens adapter and works in the opposite way of a speedbooster, instead of focusing the light from the larger lens to a smaller sensor, it projects the light to a screen which is then refocused towards the smaller sensor, essentially giving you a full frame look on a 1 inch tube sensor which is what most TV cameras had back then.
    Its ironic that the blurry background craze is mostly just isolated to UA-cam camera centric channels that just make videos about the latest gadgets and nothing else of value, fine in their own right but spread a ton of nonsense, Hollywood does not even use full frame, its either Super 35mm or medium format LOL.
    And 99% of all commercial and professional jobs use camcorders like in this video, no one can tell a difference if it was shot on a sensor size of a hair strand, or a 1-inch sensor.
    Entire TV series shot solely on smartphones, people are none the wiser.

    • @doubledeckers
      @doubledeckers 8 місяців тому +1

      Yes because the 35mm film ran through the camera vertically the Hollywood frame size was more like APS-C than full-frame 35mm. And in Hollywood they had a camera assistant who measured distances with a tape measure and then pulled focus as needed during the scene even for that smaller frame size. One of the benefits of 16mm film for documentary making was the increased depth of field. Most HD camcorders are the equivalent of 16mm film and so extremely practical for video-making as Marcus says.

    No built-in ND filters is a deal-breaker for me on any camcorder. I assume the Panasonic HC-VX981 doesn't have them and though it has the 49mm filter thread it's too much hassle having to add a filter every time I go outside in the sun. The lenses on some of the cheaper camcorders only give an acceptable picture at a wide aperture so in auto they control the exposure by pushing up the shutter speed (which looks horrible on most movement). I've used video cameras since 1980 and this only seemed to became an issue about 20 years ago. I assume manufacturers began to cut costs by leaving out automatic ND filters?

      SAME. I was really hoping we'd see at least ONE updated camcorder at this CES, especially since they discontinued the AX700. Sony is so dumb. @@allenmoviesI would love to see an X3000 update too. I need a camera that isn’t a GoPro with all of its problems, and isn’t quite a full on camcorder, to use as an all day running lock off for fishing videos.
      But also I want the simplicity of a camcorder over my mirrorless and cinema cameras sometimes. The VX2100, then DVX100B, then moving to HD with the XF100 back in the day was so handy. Love that form factor. I also just really want an IR camcorder right now, which is why I was hoping for an AX53 update, but have zero interest in buying a 7+ year old camera. Plus I’m not the biggest fan of the BOSS system. The AX700 would be the next option, but they look like they’re all grey market now. Z90V after that, but at that point we’re still talking about a camcorder that has got to be at the end of its life cycle.
      The XF605 is the only camcorder I think is what I would buy, if I were to buy today, and it looks like I might end up with one. Hope we see a Sony update by summer. If we do, and it’s got what want, IR and the S-Cinetone profile, to match my FX cameras, I’m in. If not, I’ll get that XF605.
      As for DJI, I have the pocket 3 and I’m afraid I’m going to break it. Action 4 doesn’t do the trick for me. Something in between the two - the P3 sensor and 20mm lens in a box body that is water resistant, but not fully sealed and overheats, would be something I’d buy!

    What about low light video. I used Sony SR 10E for almost 7 years. Great camera, the touch focus is incredibly perfect though the technology is 15 years old. Even today you can't get that kind perfect screen touch focus without hunting in DSLR and micro four thirds. The sound with Sony lapel mic, again, was fail proof. I have had not one instance of bad sound of interviews. Today's camera operation is almost a gamble. I carry a DSLR and a micro four third only as back for image and sound. The only problem with camcorders is low light performance. It's just not usable, not broadcast quality. I hope full frame camcorders are the real solution, but they cost so much more.
