to all of you that see the FS700 and this XA20 and think linus is going overboard with his youtubing remember this: Linus is one of the few youtubers that has an expensive camera and actually uses it for more than youtubing. linus makes commercials for companies like corsair. that fs700 is a wise investment if you know it will make you money. For filmmakers like myself that arent exactly making money off out films we choose DSLR's for quality of picture/price. but honestly a Camcorder is better for video. that is what its made for.
As a DSLR user (for photos) I consider spending money on anything with a fixed lens a waste. But I can see how easy this is to use one handed, so I understand.
Wait, are you saying that it's a waste to buy fixed lenses for photos? Because that's kind of silly and incorrect depending on what you're shooting if so.
Nvidia paid youtube to add fake tearing frames so ppl could complain about it more often, then the chances of someone buy G-sync increases. True story.
This is the kind of thing that would be great for any business type video work. Normally I need time to setup everything and space for my Dslr rig but especially in workspace environments there isn't time or space for something like that.
Question: What did you actually shoot this video with to review the Canon XA20? Just curious because I really like the depth of field at about 10:22 point of the video. Did you use a DSLR? Thanks.
Does this camera not have the 3.5mm mic input? I was in my heart hoping it did. I'm upgrading from an hfs21 and want the flexibility to use xlr or quick 1/8" Tko
Great camera for the price. I shot with the XA25 a few months ago and wasn't thrilled with the menu system though its autofocus is pretty impressive when shooting stylistic rack focus shots on the go. The codec isn't the greatest but it gets the job done.
I have always found if you point a DSLR at people they stand still thinking you are taking a picture. But if it looks like a video camera then they would react to being recorded.
Would this be an ideal purchase for making UA-cam films? Not just documenting, but things like short films, skits and music videos. In addition, what are some good video editing programs for this sort of use.
I have an XA10 and XA25 - fantastic cameras. But it is not a good idea to toss the manual, Linus. These are complicated cameras and the manual is necessary to understand optimal settings. The manual is thick only because it is in multiple languages. It is very well written.
Could you please tell me if the Canon XA20 or HF G30 can place a display on the screen that records Hours Minutes and Seconds so that the Hours Minutes and Seconds are seen on the screen with the time and day? ... The reason I'm asking is because in order to Record in a Federal Courtroom, you need a camera capable of recording "Seconds" in addition to the Hours and Minutes. ... Do you know of any Digital Cameras that do record Seconds, and then Plays those same Time settings when transferred to another device? Price is not a problem.
I was originally going to get the XA10... But after watching this and a couple other video tests of the 20... I definitely think this is a much better choice, being that the functionality is so much more superb. Thanks for the video! great review and very informative! :) Would have liked to see the Infra-red a little bit too! but oh well haha :P
Very good choice for event coverage. I hate the constant in-out focus when you use a DSLR and have to manually focus quickly between the interviewer and the product.
The Data Import utility is your friend when you want to combine files into a single continuous video... as with the other Canons, this one breaks the video into c. 4Gb chunks. You can't just stitch them together in your editor, you have to use the Utility. BTW, I got my XA20 on sale with a free copy of Vegas 12, pays to shop around.
So i have 4 of these for a small production we do weekly. I have found several of them start to zoom out by themselves, when someone zooms in it won't stay zoomed it and out zooms out. Does anyone know how to fix this.?????
It's not sexy, but this kind of camera is good for run-and-gun situations. If I were in the market for a run-and-gun camera today, I might look at a Sony NX80 or Z90 with the gorgeous 1" sensor. You can still blur out the background if you want to, but the depth of field is not so shallow that the focus is difficult to achieve. It actually has a great phase-detect autofocus system.
If your budget was around a thousand dollars and you wanted to do say, weddings, wildlife "birds especially', and sports and also have it have slow motion, so to see ball being hit etc.... What camcorder would you recommend for me to get, list 3 if you can't decide one for me. I like your videos and will await to hear your response, thank you.
Ivan Pantic I know its been 4 months, so you may have already made up your decision, but here are my thoughts since I have a Canon Legria HF G30 (Basically an XA20 without the XLR handle). First a camcorder and a DSLR are two different things. DSLRs have benefits over camcorders for video with the ability to change lenses and a larger sensor giving you better low light performance and DSLRs usually have more dynamic range. DSLRs are subject to rolling shutter which Camcorders usually don't (The Sony fdr-ax100 being the exception with terrible rolling shutter). Camcorers usually have smaller sensors and for good low light performance, you'd really want a camcorder with a 1 inch or bigger sensor (or 3 1/3 inch sensors if they handle light well enough and have a quite good image like the Sony PMW-200). Anyway, to answer your question, I don't like my HF G30 and I use it with a Atomos Ninja 2 since it outputs uncompressed 8-bit 422 from the camcorder and I get a bit better video quality than recording to SD card and less compression artifacts. The lens zoom is good being long x20 optical zoom (the digital zoom isn't good), the stabilization is good too, but it does suffer due to its small sensor meaning every video I have taken shows some (often noticeable) noise grain I have to remove in editing. Also I find the image quality isn't the greatest and lacks detail, especially in wide shots. When taking videos up close of something the image looks a bit better, maybe because there is less detail to record than wide shots. I have even found it hard at times to make the image the correct brightness in the camera (the way I see what I am pointing the camera at) as the camera often makes the image a bit darker than it actually is, and I sometimes have to set a slower shutter speed or higher exposure to get what I want in the correct brightness and when shooting landscape outdoor shots, this often means I almost (or do) overexpose the sky. Maybe the camera doesn't have enough dynamic range? Using the auto gain control (AGC) to make the image look brigher, other than having i set to 0 introduces more noise grain, so I always have it set to manual and 0 to keep it off. I have honestly found, the sharpness on a GoPro Hero4 Black to be a bit better than the Canon at 1080p and records a bit more detail despite only having an f2.8 lens, and have better color representation especially on Protune mode, so for a camcorder that costs a lot more, I am a bit disappointed, but the Canon did come out in 2013 and the GoPro last October so shouldn't really compare it to a more modern (and different type) of camera with a slightly bigger senor. The Canon 70D should be better due to having more dynamic range, bigger sensor and interchangable lenses (and you can use Magic Lantern firmware to do far more with the 70D than you could with the XA20), but there is one problem with Canon DSLRs (Not sure how it is on newer Canon DSLRs like the 5Dr/5Ds/7D MK II etc...) but some like the 550D/600D/650D when set to 1080p record mode, don't record proper 1920x1080. Instead they record at a slightly lower resolution and streach the image to 1080p so you end up with 1920x1088 (8 extra pixels) and this makes the image look softer than it would if it were actually recorded in proper 1920x1080 and I really hope Canon fixes that in the future with their DSLRs. I know there are quite a lot of good reviews of the XA20/25/HF G30, but for me personally if I had a choice and wasn't stuck with mine until I can afford something better that suits my needs better, I'd avoid it and look for something better, especially a camera that produces a sharper image and has a bigger sensor as small sensor cameras are never going to be as good as larger sensor cameras, and often won't pick up as much detail and will be subject to more noise grain(Maybe the Canon XF200/205 the professional version of the XA20/25 which despite the same lens and sensor, manages to do really quite well with having much lower noise grain than the XA20/25). Hope that helps.
LMAO!!!! Your review has me hooked. Not because I'm buying one... why buy when you can rent. No, because you said "Dick-move" to Canon and the way you described why. You are a true tech-god and I'm so glad I found this video. I'm using a rental for 8 days, have no clue about how to use it yet (hopefully you will go into all that) and the shoot is at a bowling alley, and, I don't know when the thing will arrive. The shoot is at 5:00 and the rental company shipped it today, but Saturday deliveries are iffy, and if I don't get it by 3:00 on Monday I will have no time to charge the battery enough. The question I have is, can I get the battery and charger at a store like Best Buy or Target?
+Patrick Germond All depends on your situation really. For aspects of filming like stabilization, codecs, and audio stuff, dedicated camcorders like the XA20 are good. But for more lens options, better depth of field, and more light sensitivity, a DSLR would work great. However, since you're considering buying an XA20, I'm pretty sure you've already done your research and/or already have a DSLR lol. It's just an opinion thing really. All I can say is that it's a superb camera and you'll love it if you get it
are you going to film stuff intended to be shown at a cinema? no? then you don't need 4k. showing 4k video on a run of the mill monitor or TV is a waste of quality and space.
Right. Maybe it should be noticed, 4K takes less space then 2K, and it does look a lot better then HD, even on HD Screens, resized. And if needed you can crop, pan and zoom cropped footage. Same stupid comments as 10 Years ago before HD, SD is more then enough for me....
sure 4K has uses, but you wouldn't buy a 4K camera for the extra zoom would you? this isn't really the same as SD vs HD discussion, back then HD was becoming a thing you could have in your home, 4K is not something we will be getting on our monitors for quite a while, and even if we did, at some point the pixel density would stop being noticeable. But maybe we will get 4k monitors, and maybe it will look insanely better I can't tell yet. I haven't tried using a 24 inch monitor with 4k resolution. until then, 4k on 1080p is overkill in my opinion.
Xariat Your point makes sence, but let's think about the camera market in the.. 3-5 years from now. There will be alot of 2 and 4k monitors everywhere. You can find a Super HD (almost 2K) monitor for around 700-1000 without fancy features.
Maybe I just noticed it more because it was on a camera review, but it seemed like the camera work for this video was REALLY shaky. Also, lol, it's become par for the course: Cut to B-Roll footage. "And as you can see right here, this thing that I'm gesturing at in the normal footage..."
Currently have the XA10 and it is one of the best small handheld video cameras I've used. But curious where the jog wheel on the back left corner has gone. Also it looks like the XA20 is a cheaper build quality. But that's always hard to tell just by watching a video. Otherwise decent review. Cheers
Thanks for this information; it was very helpful! I just bought the XA20 and am intimidated by the size of the user manual. Any recommendations on need-to-know sections in there, or should I read it cover to cover? Or not at all? Thanks!
Thanks for that video. Am debating a new camera to compliment my old XH-A1 and Firestore DTE recorder. Can anyone tell me how compatible the XA-20s AVCHD files are with Media Composer 7? Hate to have to spend a bunch of time in Sorenson converting to something MC7 likes, and am looking for true direct-to-edit.
Great choice Linus, good informational video too.
to all of you that see the FS700 and this XA20 and think linus is going overboard with his youtubing remember this: Linus is one of the few youtubers that has an expensive camera and actually uses it for more than youtubing. linus makes commercials for companies like corsair. that fs700 is a wise investment if you know it will make you money. hammuhr Depends how much money you're spending. When it's thousands then yes I think it's a waste to buy a fixed lens camera.
Sidney Turner the 5D Mk III has a great auto focusing system, but think about you spending 8k+ on really good lens for shooting video.
I don't know shit about cameras yet I still watched the vid from start to finish lol
I watch every video, even if I don't care remotely about whats in it.
Am I the only one who was shocked when linus said "dick move" it's like the first time I've ever heard him say anything like that
04:57 See some reflection on the Start/Stop button. A Tri-rotor helicopter or a light....
Just purchased the XA 20 and found this video. Very informative. Thank you. I'll let you know how I like the camera soon.
+Janine Lutz if you wouldn't mind i would love to hear your opinion on the camera. i'm looking to invest in one. thank you
It's great. I would recommend it.
do you use it for both indoor and out?
how is the audio on it?
Yes in and out. I purchased an external Microphone
What is with youtube and it giving me tearing.... did someone forget to turn on vsync
I've been seeing this too, glad to know im not crazy :)
Same.
It's a youtube problem not ours fortunately
im getting it too :(
Nvidia paid youtube to add fake tearing frames so ppl could complain about it more often, then the chances of someone buy G-sync increases.

My high school Media Arts class has the XA10 and it is an awesome piece of tech!
Whoa... watching this 7 years later...
Question: What did you actually shoot this video with to review the Canon XA20? Just curious because I really like the depth of field at about 10:22 point of the video. Did you use a DSLR? Thanks.
Ted Gipson Sony FS700
linus, the passion about the battery, brilliant
I just got my XA20, I'm loving it!
can it records in 60fps 1080p?
Yep...native is 24fps, which I prefer
oooh, I love camera tech
Does this camera not have the 3.5mm mic input? I was in my heart hoping it did. I'm upgrading from an hfs21 and want the flexibility to use xlr or quick 1/8"
Tko
+Tonya Tko Show yes it does
where can i find this vid @3:32?
btw, i can tell something went wrong when encoding this video, sometimes the FPS drops to ~15
Great camera for the price. I shot with the XA25 a few months ago and wasn't thrilled with the menu system though its autofocus is pretty impressive when shooting stylistic rack focus shots on the go. The codec isn't the greatest but it gets the job done.
Great pick of a camcorder there Linus, I was thinking of recommending this to my friend for his UA-cam channel.
This is a good choice. Should help a lot with your workflow for its intended purpose.
I have always found if you point a DSLR at people they stand still thinking you are taking a picture. But if it looks like a video camera then they would react to being recorded.
Lol, so true :p
No shit?
Would this be an ideal purchase for making UA-cam films? Not just documenting, but things like short films, skits and music videos. In addition, what are some good video editing programs for this sort of use.
This is the (almost) OG Linus
Your camera man is pretty awesome. So are you,as always. But I think he is a bit of an unsung hero.
I have an XA10 and XA25 - fantastic cameras. But it is not a good idea to toss the manual, Linus. These are complicated cameras and the manual is necessary to understand optimal settings. The manual is thick only because it is in multiple languages. It is very well written.
What about the sound quality compared to a Sony Handicam?
Tons better
The Canon XA camcorders do look pretty nice _ the scree in so incredibly more sharp than on my XH A1.
How about a full camera equip/setup tour?
Unbox and review the Sony FDR-AX1 4k Camcorder!
Could you please tell me if the Canon XA20 or HF G30 can place a display on the screen that records Hours Minutes and Seconds so that the Hours Minutes and Seconds are seen on the screen with the time and day? ... Great Video! I have heard the zoom button is not very smooth. I like a slow steady zoom. thanks!
I would love a dedicated camcorder. Might invest into one before my trip next year
I was originally going to get the XA10... But after watching this and a couple other video tests of the 20... I definitely think this is a much better choice, being that the functionality is so much more superb. Thanks for the video! great review and very informative! :)
Would have liked to see the Infra-red a little bit too! but oh well haha :P
Thanks for this video. Is it possible to select slow motion for one of the assignable buttons? It's a bit of a dig to access in the menu. Ty
Very good choice for event coverage. I hate the constant in-out focus when you use a DSLR and have to manually focus quickly between the interviewer and the product.
Cameras are such complex pieces of beauty :)
If I am looking to film skateboarding and motocross racing would you recomend the XA10 or XA20?
The Data Import utility is your friend when you want to combine files into a single continuous video... as with the other Canons, this one breaks the video into c. 4Gb chunks. You can't just stitch them together in your editor, you have to use the Utility. BTW, I got my XA20 on sale with a free copy of Vegas 12, pays to shop around.
looking forward to the video you will produce with this camera?
Will the Canon XA20 burn the time and date stamp onto the video BEFORE it is transferred to a computer?
you mentioned that you can control the camera through a smartphone, can you do that through a specific app? If so what is said app called?
So i have 4 of these for a small production we do weekly. I have found several of them start to zoom out by themselves, when someone zooms in it won't stay zoomed it and out zooms out. Does anyone know how to fix this.?????
Why are you still using Christmas tinkerbell music?
It's not sexy, but this kind of camera is good for run-and-gun situations. If I were in the market for a run-and-gun camera today, I might look at a Sony NX80 or Z90 with the gorgeous 1" sensor. You can still blur out the background if you want to, but the depth of field is not so shallow that the focus is difficult to achieve. It actually has a great phase-detect autofocus system.
Linus do you believe its better to shot at 1080p 60 or 30 fps?
Would love to see a video on the FS700. Like a long term review.
I like this intro more than the other :)
please can you tell me how can i get a real depht of field with this camecorder .. thank you
Thx. I'm looking for a camera to record my son's soccer and basketball games.
Is the DOF on the xa20 any better than the xa10? If so, how? Please demo DOF. Thanks.
I have had the camera for some time and been unable to find an Android App to control the camera from my phone - you have a link for that?
Does the Camera look dusty in the close up shot, or it just the color?
Finally. New intro. I hated the old one.
what's the best camera at a good price to shoot music videos?
can confirm
If your budget was around a thousand dollars and you wanted to do say, weddings, wildlife "birds especially', and sports and also have it have slow motion, so to see ball being hit etc.... What camcorder would you recommend for me to get, list 3 if you can't decide one for me. I like your videos and will await to hear your response, thank you.
For that price range I would say look at some DSLRs
Why not the Xa25? And what happened to that sony camcorder?
Awesome camera man!!
Can I use any form of lens filters on it with the Shroud on the camera?
need help, anyone knows how to switch the video system from PAL to NTSC? I don't see it on the menu~~~
Can you raid 0 the two sd cards? Could i over clock the cpu?
Looks like a camera I would invest in for filming skateboarding.
Hi any idea why I zoom in it then automatically zooms out?
Why didn't you get the XA25? Don't you guys use hd-SDI ?
I believe Linus got the camera just for running around at events and not for studio use so it would probably be a waste of $500
so how much can you store ?
I am having doubt between this camera and eos 70d for shooting weddings. Can someone help me whit some advice what should I chose?
Ivan Pantic I know its been 4 months, so you may have already made up your decision, but here are my thoughts since I have a Canon Legria HF G30 (Basically an XA20 without the XLR handle).

Hey thanks for doing this video, I’m super rusty with all my camera stuff! So thanks a billion!
Could you put a fisheye on this model?

what is it?

The pre-record buffer reminds me of shadow-play on my gtx760.
what are you filming this video with?
Thanks for sharing. Great review.
how much is the camera? thinking of using it for skateboarding footage
2.2K USD on Amazon lol.
WOW!!!
Thinking about getting a good used one off of eBay. Any advise?
use money to buy it

you should have bought the great panasonic ag-ac90
whats up with the lightskin music for the intro
Whats with the holiday intro?
It's not a holiday intro. It's for when we don't have any advertising intros to run.
Right what do I get for 2000 euro, this cute canon or the Sony AX100 4K camcorder... For the same price.

Are you uploading your videos at other than 30fps?this video ripples
I don't see it ripple on 1080.
Maybe I just noticed it more because it was on a camera review, but it seemed like the camera work for this video was REALLY shaky.
Also, lol, it's become par for the course: Cut to B-Roll footage. "And as you can see right here, this thing that I'm gesturing at in the normal footage..."
It's shaky cause it's hand held footage (camera most likely on a shoulder rig), which isn't a bad thing and personally I didn't notice it at all.
was this video shoot with xa2o?
Are cameras like these usually this expensive?
Currently have the XA10 and it is one of the best small handheld video cameras I've used. But curious where the jog wheel on the back left corner has gone. Also it looks like the XA20 is a cheaper build quality. But that's always hard to tell just by watching a video. Otherwise decent review. Cheers
Thanks for this information; it was very helpful! I just bought the XA20 and am intimidated by the size of the user manual. Any recommendations on need-to-know sections in there, or should I read it cover to cover? Or not at all? Thanks!

Canon Vixia HF G30 is $1,399, I prefer the Vixia line. This one cheapest retail is $1,999 at B&H Photo.
I can't tell if his hair is just messy, or he makes it that way!
