The Gamecube is one of the most under rated consoles of all time. Everyone slept on it for the longest time. It's truly a special console. Being a PlayStation 2 fanboy, I only recently got into the Dreamcast and Gamecube, and they are both amazing. The sixth generation in general is just on another level.
Gamecube had a dedicated S3 chip that was solely for texture decompression. So the disc size was really not an issue. This is what allowed big games to fit on it if the developers utilized it properly. Look how much game is packed into Rebel Strike... it had the whole game plus the entire Rogue Leader game in multiplayer...
The Gamecube is my favourite console ever with the Dreamcast coming in second. And I've been a gamer since the 8-bit generation (the Famicom was my first console :) ).
In my opinion GCN > N64. GameCube had RE4, Metroid Prime series, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Smash Bros Melee, the best Mario Kart still to date with 8 behind it, and that's Double Dash. There was also Kirby's Air Ride, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, I can go on. Don't get me wrong I like N64 too, but it didn't quite age well like the GCN did. Most if not all franchises that were on N64 evolved greater doing the GCN days (MKDD > MK64, Melee > Smash 64), etc.
RE1 Remake, Eternal Darkness, PSO EP1+2, PSO3 (Card game), Fire Emblem, Tales Of Symphonia, Winning Eleven 6 Final Evolution (one of the absolute best football aka "soccer" games), Pikmin 1 and 2, Chibi Robo (a very solid, underrated game), Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 (Amazing game, SWRS 3 was pretty good but not as good as the predecessor), Battalion Wars...
Yes.there was MP 1 and 2 for the cube and 3 for the wii and all three in one disc for the wii. I preferred the motion controls on MP 1 and 2. Just made it more fun IMO but I can see why it wouldn't be enjoyed by those who hated MC.
I have always appreciated gamecube. at the time if i can id buy gamecube along with ps2 cuz it has the 2nd most games i want to play on the console. then the wii came out and bought it to play a good amount good gamecube games so im over it.
It wasn't just the discs/dvd's. It was also Nintendo's philosophy with third party development teams, going all the way back to even their prime (SNES). They always believed (and still do) that the most important thing for them is their first parties and NOT on maximizing the number of different developers on their system. Iwata kept empasizing a long belief by Yamauchi that Nintendo does not believe in third party support. You should look up comments by developers at GDC before the GameCube launched, they were all joking that they would probably start developing for that system in 5 years once Nintendo releases some information about the system and starts conversations with third parties. Even saying stuff like: Nintendo is making the same old mistakes and we have no incentives of working with them. Compare that to Xbox and PS2 launches, both companies asked for massive developer support and were going round these developers to give them kits, info etc. Whereas Nintendo didn't even deliver a development kit 10 months before launch. Imanishi (Nintendo dude) even said they are not approaching ANY third party developers, because they expect that those developers would come to them once the install base of the GameCube started growing. They were so fucking arrogant. They think thought could bully third parties like they did in the SNES era. Nintendo always kept third parties in the dark and had horrible relationships with them because they seem to live inside of this bubble as a company. Even when Sony hit them with a sledgehammer with the PS1 and showed them how to treat third parties and how instrumental third parties are to the succes of the consoles, they still didn't learn. I'm sorry to say but Nintendo DESERVED this, they brought this on to themselves.
Wow, good insight. A lot of people think that Gamecube didn't really get 3rd party Support just cause of the mini discs couldn't hold as much storage capacity, but for most developers it wasn't a problem since many games wouldn't really go over the 1.5GB Storage capacity. Like you said, it was Nintendo's arrogance thinking that all they need is their 1st party titles to be successful and disrespected 3rd party developers. While the Gamecube was profitable, it was far from the breakout success it could've been if nintendo actually gave a shit about 3rd party developers. Also do you have a source for this? because I'd like to read it and learn more about the gamecube's history
There were plenty of 3rd Party games on GameCube though, you have to be blind to miss them. Nintendo gave Sega their devkit & they made the GameCube Sonic's home once they went 3rd Party. Nintendo was confident that by partnering with Sega & having the best exclusives they would be successful. Nintendo were actually treating 3rd Parties fairly well during the GameCube Era compared to the crap they tried to pull during the NES & SNES days.
Probably because they realized it was inevitable if they intended to stick around that they needed to cooperate and work with 3rd party developers more than anything. Competition I'm sure was signaling more than anything to Nintendo that they needed to do so for survival or suffer the fate of Dreamcast.
@@weathersponge5000 honestly I just blame the PS2 being an overshadowing juggernaut thanks to having DVD support with no competitor in 2000 as to why they didn't do so well literally no one broke the 30 million units mark except sony
Adam, the Nintendo GameCube is very special to me. It was my first ever game console, it's the reason why gaming and collecting is my #1 passion. It's the only game console I can truly re-live my childhood on, and personally I must say that the GameCube does have a special vibe to it, which is that it is game-centric and can appeal to anyone. Sadly, it's one of the most underrated and hated game consoles I know.
The GameCube is the most solid build console of its generation. Not to mention the most powerful one, although being the smallest ( call it cute if you want ) It is a masterpiece!
GameCube is light years ahead of the original xbox ;-) But i have to agree with you on one point - the consoles are to be extinct as it seems. The lazy PC architecture of that huge piece of shit the xbox was the beginning of the end, in my opinion. The greedy s0ny soon followed, and we now have a two PC wanna be "consoles" from them, and the underrated Wii U. Sad times to be a console gamer.
AdamKoralik I think the xbox had a little bit more power, but not by much. When you compare Metroid prime 2 vs halo 2, the graphics on metroid look way better than halo. In the end it all comes down to the developer. Some developers pushed the limits of the console, while others didnt.
martinbd4 I agree with everything you said ! But it's not just the Gamecube, every Nintendo console are reliable and strong. My NES still work at first try without the blinking blue screen and/or the need to blow in the cartridge. My friend needed to buy 3 PS2 before having one that don't fail.. Now that's dumb ! It's a shame that nobody give the Wii U and the Gamepad a chance... Hope things will change with games like Captain Toad, Smash Bros, Kirby, Mario Maker, Yoshi WW, Splatoon, Zelda, and games already released like hyrule warriors, Bayonetta 1 & 2, Mario 3d World, Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong, Pikmin 3, Wind waker, Mario Kart 8, Game & Wario, Nintendo Land, NSMBU...
brian flannigan whoever liked the sega genesis conroller, must love the Saturn one too because its virtually the same, only with 2 additional shoulder buttons.
Doubtful. The Wii U never had any true killer app, the Cube had Smash Bros. Pretty much every Wii U game had a 3DS port or multiplat to it, and now the stuff is going to Switch. The Cube had extraordinary hardware for the time, only behind the Xbox in terms of raw power, lots of games still look amazing for the time. The Wii U was utterly outclassed. Nah, the Wii U is more comparable to the Virtual Boy at best, at worst, you insult even the Virtual Boy in such a comparison. Hell, GameCube had all sort of IPs together, Wii U played up Mario to levels nearly as bad as Sega and Sonic.
@@Warriorcats64 dude its Nintendos version of the saturn, their failed console. Its GOING to be valuable for playing wii games via HDMI alone. Dont underestimate collectors
@@AlphaladZXA Now you insult Saturn, which at least had the novelty of exclusive that are to this day, near-impossible to emulate? That's cold...real cold.
Great video, dude! I fucking love the GCN, and it's one of my favorite and most nostalgic game consoles of all time. The entire 6th Generation was just amazing overall. I will disagree with it not having a vibe though. I like to think of the consoles as kids in high school. The PS2s are the popular, preppy kids. The Xboxes are the jocks. The GameCubes are the weird kids that are actually pretty cool when you get to know them. One UA-camr (for the life of me, I can't remember who) described the GCN years as Nintendo's weird experimental college years, which makes sense, as Nintendo did experiment a lot with their titles this gen. They gave Mario a jetpack, gave Mario Kart two racers, turned Metroid into a first person shooter/adventure, and made Zelda cel shaded. Plus, stuff like the GBA link cables.
Ironically, the GameCube had some sort of feel to me that I haven't been able find with any other console. Probably with the Wii U or to a lesser extent the PSP. It's gotta be nostalgia or the fact that it was my first brand new console, and the graphics looked INSANELY good to me and brother. We had quite the great times playing Mario Party 4, Wind Waker, Crash and Harry Potter 2!
I totally agree. I love my GC (and my Megadrive), both have great "vibes" to me. I like the shape & design, I like the handle, the small CDs, the boot up/menu, I love the controller and the different colors, the whole machine fits my personality perfectly. But surely nostalgia & memories are a big part of that. I never had an original Xbox or a SNES etc, and unfortunately these feel stone cold to me (don't get me wrong, the SNES has awesome games), I just don't feel it with any of them. I know it had no Mario launch title but Luigis Mansion was great, and I actually thought that game fitted the machine, and vice versa, perfectly. It was new, fresh, fun and dared to be different (ie not Mario), just like the GC. Please dont thinking I'm bashing your opinion, as I'm really not, I enjoy you're vids.
Thank God for the mini-DVDs, their loading times are incredibly fast, unlike the PS2. Nintendo is about the best gaming experience possible and i love them for that.
I loved the Gamecube, it was my go to console during that generation. I remember pre-ordering Wind Waker and getting the OoT disc, and they had tons of them. It was an unpopular system, and that was before people scalped the living shit out of everything Nintendo made. I played a ton of Animal Crossing and Double Dash in particular, 2 of my all time favourite games.
Same here, I don't think I'd be a gamer today without the awesome games. I remember that I loved animal crossing so much that I woke up at five in the morning to get two hours in before school.
Emma Johnson I woke up at five in the morning to do morning excercises with the game... during the summer... Gamecube Animal Crossing was still the best in the series.
Okay no, the purple wasn't the kiddy one stop making stuff up. The SNES was also purple, the N64 variants which are the most seemed out. At launch it was only available in purple, it wasn't selling because of the backlash of it not looking mature enough. They released the black color and phased out the purple system. It's why when the game boy player released it was only in black, not because "not support the kiddy one". Then the platinum color was released late in the systems life. Quick note only the purple and black gamecubes have the port for the high def cable.
I bought a black one at launch. They were sold in tandum with the purple units. Purple, black, silver (some), and orange all had the component port. I can prove it, I own them.
Perhaps you're correct man, at least here in Arizona at launch only Indigo was available, till months later around the Resident Evil Remake that the Black model was available. I do know however that the Indigo was chosen because the N64 Purple controller was incredibly popular and the best seller by far. Also super jealous of your Orange Cube haha I've wanted that one since i first saw it.
Hideo Kojima doesn't like Twin Snakes? What? Where did you hear that? The reason Konami didn't rerelease that version of the game in HD was because they wanted the HD remasters to be of just games that Kojima directed himself. He didn't direct Twin Snakes, but he DID help with its development. In fact, he had them ham up the cutscenes to be over the top because he liked that style more, as later MGS games would show. Even then, Konami can rerelease the games however they want. They just have no respect for their developers or customers anymore.
My collection of Gamecube games is probably the smallest of all my console game collections yet it's still my favorite console to this day. I can't really tell why, might be the nostalgia or the controller or whatever, but I still like it more than the PS2 and Xbox.
Although I still played the heck out of my Ps2, my Gamecube was a close second. Man I love the Gamecube. A game I used to love and recommend still is Pitfall the Lost Expedition
Ha, gunny thing. I play my GameCube all the time. Currently going through ResidentEvil 4. I said funny at the beginning because I've tried Pitfall and couldn't even pass the first stage or what ever - and I thought the game sucks. Maybe I should give it another try someday. :-)
martinbd4 Hey I was pretty young when I first played it so nostalgia could be a factor in why I like it so much. But it did have some great things about it. You achieve new and fun to use tools, items, and abilities to help you throughout the game. Being able to choose what abilities you unlock is a great feature. Not to mention the graphics were pretty incredible (Mud and water especially) at the time and still hold up perfectly. And maybe it's just me but I always enjoyed the story, but then again I was younger.
Bob Saget Very cool man, I respect that. I might definitely try it out again someday. And I also recall the graphics for being good, so I agree on this one :-)
Adam you completely fail to realize that the Minidisc system was actually better by being more compact it allowed for much faster load times than the competition. Nintendo also was fully aware that it cost less to make the GameCube discs, meaning 2 Disc games was how the 3rd Party developers were supposed to do things. GameCube had better hardware than the PS2 & the best controller ever made & I knew the GameCube would be something special back when I got mine in 2002.
Looking back at this video it’s amazing to see how cheap GameCube stuff was back then but now it is insane!! I’m so glad I have a lot of GameCube games in my collection because they are crazy expensive.
I love how small and powerful the Gamecube is, the cube format was a very smart design choice and coming in many colors is excellent for collectors, also the Mini DVDs have lightning fast loadings.
The things I remember most of the GameCube are the outstanding Wavebird, and the kick ass GB Player. To this very day I still use the GB Player because of just how awesome it was. Couple that with component cables and you have yourself the perfect way to capture quality footage of GB, GBC, and GBA games. It’s amazing. In terms of the system itself, I never liked the look of it. I always felt it looked more like a toy than a game console, and for the longest time the games gave that same impression. For as good as Super Mario Sunshine or Wind Waker were, they both had a distinct kiddie image. It wasn’t until they really started pushing the more mature titles like the Resident Evil series, P.N.03, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, and Eternal Darkness that my opinion of the system started to change. Today I look back and remember there really were some truly superb exclusives on the platform, and how it was Nintendo’s last real attempt to cater to the core gamer. The Wii wasn’t designed for us, and while they’re starting to gain my interest more with the Wii U, the GameCube was clearly the last Nintendo platform I really adored. Great series Adam.
I agree with Adam on Nintendo making a rather good attempt to win back the mature crowd. With Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil, RE:0, RE4, the ports of 2 and 3, Metriod Prime series, MGS The Twin Snakes etc, etc. The console itself is a nice beast, only held back by the micro-disc format and Nintendo's seemingly confused efforts to market it and continuing alienation of 3rd party devs.
I don't know man... While I under the aspect of the "feeling" behind the aura of a console aka it's gravitas of subjective culture, there is something about the GameCube that I absolutely love. Hell I love the classic purple console too! But in this gen I had a GameCube and an Xbox. I honestly played them equally, with the Xbox only getting favor from its online aspect. When the Resident Evil deal came out, it only made me love the console even more. It also had this odd power to it, for some reason it had some phenomenal looking games, yet awful ones too. Between its unique aspect and stellar releases, it's truly the black swan of gaming next to the Saturn. There is something about both of those consoles that feels truly unique, and will never be replicated again. Speaking of a "feeling" that consoles have, this current gen feels pretty empty too. Maybe it's just because the unique nature of the consoles that drain it of personality, it's just hard to find a "feeling" out of 8th gen
What do you mean Nintendo never talks about the GameCube? There's a GameCube controller adapter for the Wii U for Gods sake. AND they continue to sponsor Smash Bros Melee tournaments on a regular basis.
The GameCube is definitely one of my favorite consoles of all time. The only things holding it from being my favorite are inferior console ports, lack of nostalgia, and it's expensive to collect for. Hard for me to criticize it though with that sweet controller.
I have the Dolphin emulator on my PC and all of the gamecube games look amazing. Enhanced anti aliasing, insanely enhanced texture filtering, 16:9 Widescreen hack and resolution upscaling which is pretty much anti aliasing on steroids that makes everything look crystal clear and amazing. (pc master race lol)
I don't really see where you're getting the whole "purple for kids, black for adults" idea at. I own the purple Gamecube (purple is badass) and it's the shit, I worship that godly block of plastic. In addition to this, the Gameboy Player *was* released in purple (as well as spice orange) in Japan. Nintendo just opted to only release the black model in the west. Nice video other than that. I love the Gamecube, it's one of my favorite consoles ever made. It just had so much going for it that I think most consumers ignored at the time. Yeah, it didn't have DVD or CD playback, but how many people would actually say that those are relevant forms of media storage anymore? Most people collect their stuff digitally now, and many of the people who don't have likely moved on higher quality products like Blu-ray discs. At the end of the day, it all comes down to whether or not a system has good games. And Gamecube definitely does. After all, that's what gaming machines were created for, right? To this day all of these superfluous media apps/content still don't interest me all that much. Sure, it's nice to have Netflix and Blu-ray playback on my PS3, but it's not the reason why I bought it.
Josh Leitzel While I agree that it's a great console- even the look. It is an odd/quirky design. For every person who saw/see's it now for what it is, you had countless more who flocked to the "Edginess" of the Xbox or Ps2. You're forgetting that people are quick to dismiss anything as "Childish" then and now.
I have an indigo Gameboy Player for the Gamecube. Gamecube mini disc format was one of Nintendo's way of combating piracy, being a software company as well they sort of hated piracy. Piracy was one thing that helped Playstation's popularity, especially in Asia.
Gamecube was a big part of my childhood. Before then it was some pc games, playing Smash Bros and Majora's Mask at Alfys Pizza or McDonald's. Then our neighbor sold us their GameCube and we got Sims Bustin Out which was fun, but then we got Smash Bros Melee. All day nonstop man. Of course later I'd get Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash, Star Fox Assault. Then there were multi plats like Lego Star Wars, The Incredibles, Monster House. Good times. Edit: Ok, it's pretty sweet you liked my comment man. I really respect you and your opinions. I watched your vids around 5 years ago when I was in high school, and loved them. It's awesome to revisit them now. It's been educational while also giving me a renewed interest in retro games. Thank you sir, I salute you.
I love the GameCube Design. it's so cute! And it doesn't break, like...ever. I'm sure you could burn it and it would still work. And especially as a kid back then I was constantly thinking, that the GameCube had more games for me. And the GameCube Controller is still the best one in my opinion. The only thing that REALLY sucks is, that they took the 480p mode out of all the PAL games. There was a model of the GameCube that you could plug Component cables in to, but no game supported 480p. I think there are 2 or 3 games you can get to run in 480p when you play them on a NTSC console, but that's the one think I really dislike about the GameCube. Other than that, it's a great console with a lot of fantastic games. Especially with the GameBoy Player.
I purchased a GameCube in 2006 in a Cashconverters (Pawn Shop in the UK) for £30, that was with a controller, cables and a memory card. I only got it to play the Resident Evil games that you couldn't get on the PS2 or Xbox. One of the toughest things to get recently was a GAMEBOY player, although you can find the unit's easily, a lot of people have lost the Start Up Disc making it useless. On eBay a guy was selling a console with no cables or a controller but he did have a GAMEBOY player with the disc! Just managed to get it for £55! That's how rare the discs have gotten in the UK. I probably won't get the component cable as they are stupidly expensive. Great videos mate :-)
That's a shame. The 5th generation was very quirky to me and there were some good consoles like Playstation and Nintendo 64 and there were some bad ones like Philips CDI and Panasonic 3DO.
My mom bought me a GameCube the year of their release and I loved it. I purchased so many games for it. I also had a PS2 but I always preferred the GameCube due to the controller feeling more comfortable to my hands.
The Gamecube is not only my favorite Nintendo system but my favorite system of all time. The Gamecube had an amazing controller and was LOADED with Games and I loved it!
As a fan of your channel and as a gamecube lover ... i highly recommend these gamecube games for u :)... 1- viewtiful joe 1 or 2 2- billy hatcher and the giant egg 3- mario kart double dash 4- mario sunshine 5- any mario party game 6- super monkey ball 1 or 2 7- f-zero gx 8- tales of symphonia 9- paper mario the thousand year door 10- mario power tennis 11- mario superstar baseball 12- any resident evil game like 0 and the remake I like you very much adam
I'm not going to beat around the bush and ask you to do a retrospective on (n) generation...Could you just do this for all the systems? I look forward to the Virtual Boy video
The gamecube was my first system, I was pissed when the Wii came out. Its one of my favorite childhood memories. I only knew three other people with it.
Zelda Wind Waker and Zelda Twilight Princess did everything Ocarina of Time did but better and also more, and StarFox Assault was the direction StarFox games should have gone going forward, plus Metroid Prime, Soul Kalibur 2, Rogue Squadron. I dont really follow the nostalgia for the N64 much. I know a lot of people say StarFox sucked after 64, but I still really enjoyed Assault, moreso than 64 these days. Zero tried to recapture what 64 did and failed miserably and the direction StarFox has gone lately bums me out.
I dunno about the color thing, like the N64 came in multiple colors. And the Wii was advertised to as well. Nintendo making colorful consoles isnt really anything odd : / And the Gamecube may have the smallest library, but I had a GC, Xbox and PS2, and I can definitely say the Gamecube was my favorite : p It had the fewest games, but also the best games : p
I played something around 6500 hours PSO on the gamecube alone, and before that nearly 2000 hours on the dreamcast, which is still a lot for a 56k modem and no flatrate. 36 or 48 hour sessions were pretty common. And there were still people who had even twice or thrice as much playtime. Of course its because PSO is a online rpg, and nothing unsual to reach so many hours of playtime with online games.
We thought about the developers as our main customers. In particular for GameCube, we spent three years working with Nintendo of America and with all sorts of developers, trying to understand the challenges, needs, and problems they face. First among these is the rising cost of development. The GameCube can see high performance without too much trouble; it isn’t a quirky design, but a very clean one. It was important we didn’t require jumping through hoops for high performance to be achieved. On top of that, it is rich in features, and we worked to include a dream group of technical features that developers requested. - Greg Buchner, ArtX's Vice President
I know you said you like the GameCube but I think you've (intentionally or unintentionally) painted a very negative picture of it in this video. If there was no Wii backwards compatibility then the GameCube would be my favourite system ever, there are more AAA games on the system than any other console
Sam Gates I'm pretty certain Nintendo wouldn't have objected one bit to GTA being released for their system. It was up to Rockstar which system they made games for & as the Gamecube wasn't selling well they decided not to port it over. A 'kid friendly' version of those games did come out for the Gamecube, it was called "The Simpsons: Hit & Run". P.S. If I 'changed' my comment then it would say 'edited' at the bottom... Moron
in Christmas 2001 or 2002, I got a GameCube. The two games that I also got was Luigi's Mansion and SSB Melee. I had that purple one until the disc reader just gave out. Later after, had to wait a few months to get a replacement, and it was silver with the component cable capability. It was a good console.
I like how you go so in depth with everything you speak about and how you respond to the comments of everyone (no one else does that). You have a new subscriber in me.
ah, the good ol days where you could go into goodwill and pick up a gamecube for $5. now I can't even go into a goodwill. the last official thing I saw there was a controller for $6, which is still good but yeah...
the gamecube was nintendo's last hardcore system it had a lot of great and exclusives games. the system design, color, mini disc, lack of a DVD player and an of controller design scared away developers.
I love Super Mario Sunshine and Super Smash Bros. Melee. A big reason the GameCube was a big financial failure was because of laughable storage capacity and the fact that those awesome games were Nintendo exclusive. (You only got the games if you bought the GameCube only)
Man I never had one when I was a kid. I got one now and I do my best hunting for games that might be hard to find. I relived a few games that I played on my childhood ps2, and otherwise I work my hardest to enjoy a new journey through some of the amazing GameCube titles.
The gamecube was awesome, sadly it is considered a financial flop. I too am guilty for not embracing the gamecube. I only have 8 games for my gamecube, and never had more than 20. I did get the game cube for Resident Evil and Zelda, but mine sat around. Now do fifth gen, just kidding.
I mean, with 4th gen, you have the CD-i, the 3DO, TG-16/PC Engine, Amiga CD32, The other Amiga console, C64GS....4th gen is a graveyard. I cant think of anything other than the big three that got released in the 5th gen.
***** Actually almost all of those are fifth generation consoles. TG-16/PC Engine being the one exception. Plus of course FM Towns Marty, Jaguar, Jaguar CD, and so on. Fourth Generation did have the Neo Geo AES, but fifth generation also had the Neo Geo CD.
@@RiceBombzz Well technically it's not really made up but you know what I'm getting at right? We use words to describe things but something as time can't really be simply explained in a universal sense.
This whole "generation numbering" thing is so confusing. Whenever somebody says "sixth generation" I never know what the hell they're talking about. Can't we just refer to these generations in a simpler way, relating it to something more specific? Everybody knows what someone means when they say the "8-bit era", or the "16-bit era" because those were both big marketing terms of that era. People also know exactly what you mean when they can relate it to a single console, such as "The Xbox era" or "The PS1 Era" and it lets them think about the consoles that were out around that same time. However, I know that I (as well as many others) get super confused when somebody says "The second generation of consoles" or "The third generations of consoles", because, like... it's so vague and nonspecific. There's nothing to relate that number to. It's not like all of the consoles were labelled with a big number. The SNES didn't have a big "3" stamped on the box.
***** but, why go with such standardized naming conventions when nobody is actually familiar with that standardization? It would be like if I said "hey, let's all start calling seahorses a 'first generation creature' and humans a 'sixth generation creature' " or something. Things are named arbitrarily, and the names of classifications also come about arbitrarily, they don't need to make 100% sense. Trying to force a standardized name is just going to confuse most people... and isn't the entire point of language to let us understand each other? There's enough obscure video game jargon as it is. We don't need more.
God, this is some terrible logic. Everyone knows what Generation standardization is & understands how each console qualifies. Saying stuff like “Xbox era” or “PS1 era” is more confusing and just outright tacky. Numbering each generation is easier because each console shares certain similarities that identify their respective generations. 8-bit era doesn’t indicate any more than at least CPU processing.
The GameCube is such a great console. I think the reason it didn't do that well was Nintendo had so many ideas, and didn't know what to do with it. Great hardware, but with a limitation they didn't need (mini DVDs). They programmed stereoscopic 3D into it, but didn't use it because nobody had 3D TVs. They had the motion controller, but waited for the Wii. The had the Game Boy Advance connection cable, which was great for the games it was used on (Animal Crossing in particular) but basically because useless once the DS came out. The Wii U is facing the same thing. Lots of ideas, great hardware, but nobody knows what to do with it. By the time they figure out, it's too late.
Actually, believe it or not,the Atari 2600 had a wireless control, but it was gigantic,it had a huge antenna sticking out of it,and it required some weird box thing that it connected to to work.
I sold my GameCube back in 07 along with other stuff for a 360. This year I started to miss it , so I bought another. I have to say that it actually holds up pretty well with it being 2015.
This console is so nestalgic for me, although I do remember versing my mates in Melee and loosing a match. I didn't take it well and pulled on the controller which caused the gamecube to fall off the coffee table but it wasn't damaged. Good Times.
Luigi's Mansion was awesome. It honestly gave me some nightmares, but I beat that game probably 10 times. Mario Party, Double Dash, Sunshine, Melee were the other ones I played the hell out of.
The Gamecube was my first video game console. It holds a special place in my heart as I played Metroid Prime on it every day when I was 7 with other games like Spider-man and LOTR. It's very sad that it has been side-swept for the N64 and Wii, and it deserves recognition and appreciation. I love it so much, and still play on one today. I hope in the future gamers will find this as a great console with great exclusives and not a kiddie lunchbox that they thought it was.
Seeing this 4 years later, damn how times have changed. Glad Nintendo are making an effort with gamers again after learning from the Wii and Wii U. The Switch and the effort nintendo is putting in it reminds me of the effort with the gamecube, trying to sell it to "adults" (e.g. compare something like the Doom port and other attempts with third parties, with other mature games like the Resident Evil series on GC), while also still catering to kids, comparing the purple colour to the nintendo labo. The gamecube is like one of my favourites all time just because of the nostalgia I have (I grew up with it), and because of the sheer amount of awesome games it has. Glad I rewatched this years later on your channel since the original release.
I think the Gameboy Player being black was just because a black base looks fine on any system, especially the black cubes, but if you made it purple it would make for an odd look for anyone who had anything besides the purple cube.
Atari actually had their own first-party wireless joysticks for the 2600 that they released in 1982. They came in sets of two joysticks, and each one used 4 AA batteries which would last a surprisingly long time.
Something worth noting, which I just figured out, is that the Gameboy player adapter is region free. The start up disc is required to match that of the region of the GameCube. That being said, if the start up disc is Japanese and the GameCube is Japanese, it can still play US Gameboy games. I just got myself an Orange Spice GameCube with a region switch mod. It also has the Gameboy player with the Japanese start up disc. I guess Japanese Gameboys also have the same feature where they can play US Gameboy games. I'm glad I'm making this investment now.
Every single GameCube game has basically doubled in price since the pandemic
@ravelnavarro4358 So that was Nintendo’s fault? How? 😂
I bought TTYD for $44 before the pandemic, now it’s $150
Don’t buy ‘em. No game on the GameCube is that good, except the ones that were already expensive e.g. Baten Kaitos.
Blame the ignorant fan boys
The Gamecube is one of the most under rated consoles of all time. Everyone slept on it for the longest time. It's truly a special console. Being a PlayStation 2 fanboy, I only recently got into the Dreamcast and Gamecube, and they are both amazing. The sixth generation in general is just on another level.
Everyone slept on it because it was boring and the controller fucking stinks
Gamecube had a dedicated S3 chip that was solely for texture decompression. So the disc size was really not an issue. This is what allowed big games to fit on it if the developers utilized it properly.
Look how much game is packed into Rebel Strike... it had the whole game plus the entire Rogue Leader game in multiplayer...
2000s kids:I think the GameCube is the most underrated console.
2010s kids:I think the Wii U is the most underrated console.
2021 - the two most underrated consoles of all time.
That is subjective
The Wii U very likely wont go the way those systems did just cause the sheer amount of switch ports
Totally agree 👍
@Alpha AX
DreamCast that had it's games ported yet is still a cult classic: *Am I a joke to you*
GameCube definitely has a "feel" for me. Its hard to describe but its just... Fun. So much fun. My personal favourite system of the generation.
SgtPepper1806 The large A button on the controller also makes it the best 6th gen console to play platforming games on.
Oh and fucking ROGUE SQUADRON II
Disappointed you didn't mention Metroid Prime. That was one of the best games that Nintendo released on the GameCube.
If not the best. A technical marvel designed by genius game designers.
Super Mario Sunshine also.
Not to mention Prime 2.
DarthVandigo Mario Sunshine
The best games are easily Pikmin 1 and 2.
Yeah the GameCubes games still look nice. N64 don't look as good.
Every good game was on the GC and any game that isn't would be better if it was
+animeartist888 I love the GameCube. That's why you shouldn't be impatient, then you'd hear me say how great it was.
Metroid Prime was the greatest game ever made and only on Gamecube!
Michael Williams
Wii too with Metroid Prime Trilogy.
Yes.there was MP 1 and 2 for the cube and 3 for the wii and all three in one disc for the wii. I preferred the motion controls on MP 1 and 2. Just made it more fun IMO but I can see why it wouldn't be enjoyed by those who hated MC.
It doesn't for everyone.some can adjust and like it and others just can't use it,thus hating it.
I have always appreciated gamecube. at the time if i can id buy gamecube along with ps2 cuz it has the 2nd most games i want to play on the console. then the wii came out and bought it to play a good amount good gamecube games so im over it.
i love the gamecube still have my cube from launch, 15 years and still works like a champ
20 now
My GameCube also still works like a champ
You should do the 5th gen don't worry about who request it or not you have something that will bring in a lot of new people
I may.
+Jerred Zol that's a rip off bro. Goodwill is greedy af.
Dogmas and Sacred Cows do not just die easily.
Actually the XBox has the power advantage.
Sad times to be a console gamer.
martinbd4 That first point is simply not true.
Hope things will change with games like Captain Toad, Smash Bros, Kirby, Mario Maker, Yoshi WW, Splatoon, Zelda, and games already released like hyrule warriors, Bayonetta 1 & 2, Mario 3d World, Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong, Pikmin 3, Wind waker, Mario Kart 8, Game & Wario, Nintendo Land, NSMBU...
the gamecube has the best controller ever invented
GameCube and the 360 controller. And the Sega Genesis controller ( into )
brian flannigan
whoever liked the sega genesis conroller, must love the Saturn one too because its virtually the same, only with 2 additional shoulder buttons.
anyone ever tried the Virtual boy controller it looks nice. Reminds me of the gamecube controller without the analogue stick
AMK Well I wouldn't know because I never owned a Saturn. olo
+J o n a t h a n VB Controller is amazing
In 10 years time this will be most people's opinion towards the Wii U. It'll look great in hindsight but ignored and laughed at when it was relevant
I agree.
I agree...the Wii U will be sought after...I can just imagine what second hand stores are going to try and sell the Wii U version of BotW...
If possible, one on the fifth generation would be awesome! Would love to hear your take on it, as it is one of my favorite generaitons.
Thank you, I may.
+HardcoreGamer4Ever Thanks!
A lot of people disagree with me on that. Which is fine with me.
+AdamKoralik I am getting a gamecube
How about dremecast
Those mini discs held much less storage compared to regular DVDs. The PS2 and Xbox using DVDs made it possible to make big worlds.
Doesn't matter, GC still had amazing games.
Paulo Roberto ps2 was better than the GameCube stop being a fanboy
Rashid Dubai Oh the irony...
Rashid Dubai such irony
Igamikun completely agree!
Very awesome video. Cheers and letting ya know, even 8 years later this video is still entertaining people.
The gamecube is my favorate console of all time
Same here!!!
Shame I discovered it too late now all its shit is averaging 35 to 40$!!! That's so lame man :(
😂
I had no idea that Gamecube component cables were so expensive now. Makes me glad I got mine when Nintendo's website was still selling them!
I have a silver with component output (digital) that i use with my component cables.
+Paulo Roberto you must've gotten the first batch of silvers 👍🏽 I couldn't find those here in AZ only the later ones with the port removed.
+DeegoL9 I got my black gamecube here in Arizona at launch
Hideo Kojima doesn't like Twin Snakes? What? Where did you hear that? The reason Konami didn't rerelease that version of the game in HD was because they wanted the HD remasters to be of just games that Kojima directed himself. He didn't direct Twin Snakes, but he DID help with its development. In fact, he had them ham up the cutscenes to be over the top because he liked that style more, as later MGS games would show.
Even then, Konami can rerelease the games however they want. They just have no respect for their developers or customers anymore.
I heard that years ago.
Doesn't line up with what I've looked up about the game, though.
My collection of Gamecube games is probably the smallest of all my console game collections yet it's still my favorite console to this day. I can't really tell why, might be the nostalgia or the controller or whatever, but I still like it more than the PS2 and Xbox.
RobinDF I also have a small library and the games I do have are pretty bad, yet I still like it. I’m waiting until Game prices lower.
@@MalarkeyMan yeah their just going up still it'll be a while before they drop again
Do a 5th generation series Adam
I may.
AdamKoralik yes Adam do a 5th gen series please!!!!!!!
Bob Saget
Very cool man, I respect that.
How you described the GameCube as having no personality is exactly how I feel about the Xbox one.
Looking back at this video it’s amazing to see how cheap GameCube stuff was back then but now it is insane!! I’m so glad I have a lot of GameCube games in my collection because they are crazy expensive.
I liked the purple gamecube. After a while you grow tired of black or white boxes.
I agree, that's the best way to play GB, GBC, and GBA (exclusive emulators I guess).
I agree completely.
Thank you.
The Gamecube had some great games!
What do you mean Nintendo never talks about the GameCube? There's a GameCube controller adapter for the Wii U for Gods sake. AND they continue to sponsor Smash Bros Melee tournaments on a regular basis.
+ThePokemaniacZach The video was posted well before Nintendo released that controller adapter.
+AdamKoralik you ignored the Melee tournament part
+ThePokemaniacZach That's more of an acknowledgement of that game and not necessarily that platform as a whole.
AdamKoralik fuck that guy they left the gamecube in The dust u right adam
+Pam G I'm sorry, you probably suck as an argumentative personality and do even worse if you try to back someone up in an argument.
GameCube definitely aged better than the PlayStation 2.
+Josh Leitzel Oh! So that is way barney is purple, because he is badass...
That argument is about as lame as saying the color red is childish just because Elmo is red.
Josh Leitzel
No argument here just stating a fact,Barney is Badass!! So is Grimace from McDonalds and Tinky-Winky from Teletubbies.
+Josh Leitzel
they conducted studies and found out that us people preferred jet black while japanese preferred orange and indigo.
I really miss the GameCube. It was so unique with it design for the console and controller.
Nintendo tried, but they overlooked the importance of online play. The BB adapter was pretty much just for Phantasy Star Online.
Yep, very true.
I have an indigo Gameboy Player for the Gamecube.
Gamecube mini disc format was one of Nintendo's way of combating piracy, being a software company as well they sort of hated piracy.
Piracy was one thing that helped Playstation's popularity, especially in Asia.
i love the lovely lunch box GC it needs more love is very underrated
I would give it more love if its games weren't so expensive now anything Nintendo is 35 to almost 50$ what the fuck man
Gamecube was a big part of my childhood.
Now it's time to request for the 5th generation!
Not a whole lot of people have done that actually.
@Jonathan Tefft I probably will, thanks!

I am only recommending the games i loved (i'm not that good in english 😅)
miimario44
but everyone loves splinter cell
TruSk8er i actually don't have the game .... i only have the demo from "nintendo gamecube preview disk "
But i didn't get used to the controlls :(
I got a Gamecube when I was very young and I loved it. So many great games and it was super easy to use and get used to.
I'm not going to beat around the bush and ask you to do a retrospective on (n) generation...Could you just do this for all the systems? I look forward to the Virtual Boy video
HA, direct and to the point. I appreciate that.
I can only imagine how expensive the Panasonic Q GameBoy Player is now.
+Moogi Beans its kinda like the wii u except the gamecube was actually powerful for its time
It still has a larger library than the N64 actually.
Take Mark from Classic Game Room’s advice, “Use it as a weapon, and punch people, with your gamecube.”
I played over 100 hours in Paper Mario on my GameCube
I played a lot of that too, thousand year door was amazing
Shawn Pal 600 for me, being 8 and 100% this was hard.
Shawn Pal i sold that game lol

I know you said you like the GameCube but I think you've (intentionally or unintentionally) painted a very negative picture of it in this video.
If there was no Wii backwards compatibility then the GameCube would be my favourite system ever, there are more AAA games on the system than any other console
Sam Gates That's what I said :s
Sam Gates No I didn't, you're such a weirdo.
Moron
That was up to Rockstar, not Nintendo. Nintendo didn't and wouldn't have blocked any version of GTA for their system :s.
the game vude had true crimes strees of la copy of gta but u a under cover cop lol
in Christmas 2001 or 2002, I got a GameCube. The two games that I also got was Luigi's Mansion and SSB Melee. I had that purple one until the disc reader just gave out. Later after, had to wait a few months to get a replacement, and it was silver with the component cable capability. It was a good console.
my favourite console, the only problem is that the component cable is impossibe to find without paying 200 dollars.
+joseph philip Capobianco preach
I play gamecube games on the wii using inexpensive component cables.
me too
I like how you go so in depth with everything you speak about and how you respond to the comments of everyone (no one else does that). You have a new subscriber in me.
Happy to, welcome aboard.
adam! do a 5th gen series! do it!!!
I may, thank you for watching.
ah, the good ol days where you could go into goodwill and pick up a gamecube for $5. now I can't even go into a goodwill. the last official thing I saw there was a controller for $6, which is still good but yeah...
I luckily just got it today for 20 dollar's
Never, NEVER! stoop so low as to get a Wii.
the gamecube was nintendo's last hardcore system it had a lot of great and exclusives games. the system design, color, mini disc, lack of a DVD player and an of controller design scared away developers.
very unique indeed and ports on bottom and very fun games and i still got mine
I love Super Mario Sunshine and Super Smash Bros. Melee. A big reason the GameCube was a big financial failure was because of laughable storage capacity and the fact that those awesome games were Nintendo exclusive. (You only got the games if you bought the GameCube only)
Damn, I never realized how underrated the GameCube is. It was my first home console. I just wish there weren't so many games I missed out on as a kid.
I may, a lot of people seem to want me to skip the fifth generation.
4th gen would be a pain in the ass. So many consoles came out then, competing.
***** No way, the fifth generation is way more of a console graveyard.
Watching this 5 years later and gosh the quality is still there.
Watching this makes me realize that time is an illusion.
Time is just something us humans made up
@@RiceBombzz Numerical time and we could argue that language is something made up which invalidates the word time right??
@@Eruptor1000 language is something we made up lol...so ya
Study.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_%28first_generation%29
***** but, why go with such standardized naming conventions when nobody is actually familiar with that standardization?
It would be like if I said "hey, let's all start calling seahorses a 'first generation creature' and humans a 'sixth generation creature' " or something.
Things are named arbitrarily, and the names of classifications also come about arbitrarily, they don't need to make 100% sense. Trying to force a standardized name is just going to confuse most people... and isn't the entire point of language to let us understand each other?
There's enough obscure video game jargon as it is. We don't need more.
Snes was fourth gen
6th gen should be called the memory card generation.
Metroid was awesome on the cube, i never forget that! Timesplitters 2, also not to be forgotten.
+Steve TBY Thanks for watching!
the video isn't working for me it might be on my pc
zrectnat nvm it was it's working fine now great vids btw
I always liked the gamecube, I went over to a friends house one time and played hot pursuit 2, I loved the game and console, I is really underrated.
GameCube and Wii U are 2 of my favorite Nintendo consoles ever
Switch and 3ds for me.
By the time they figure out, it's too late.
one thing i love about the gamecube is how durable and small it is and it made it easy to bring it to a friends house
My number one favorite thing about the GameCube: the Game Boy Player.
I like how you don't just describe the hardware but you also talk about the companies.
I always felt that the Gamecube was and will always be one of my favorite consoles. Especially now that i have a modchip installed.
Its like I watched this video the other day. Cant believe its 10 years old.
Tell me about it.
"The GameCube felt like it had no feel"
_Dwayne Johnson Eyebrow raise_
Mario Party, Double Dash, Sunshine, Melee were the other ones I played the hell out of.
i got my gamecube the year it came out and loved everything about it
The Gamecube was my first video game console.
I grew up playing all of the Bloody Roar games, I really enjoyed playing the last bloody roar on my GC.
The GameCube was the most popular console around, among my friends when we were kids. I'm really of shocked to here that it didn't sell well over all.
