Your mom consistently comes up as being super cool. I hope you give her a lot of love for all the times your mom took you console shopping. The world would be a better place if we all had mom's like yours. ❤️
Adam Koralik do it Adam talk about atleast the development of home pong and the creation of pong and how nolan Bushnell took ralph baers ping pong game and made it a smash hit with pong and home pong in 1975.
Adam Koralik Come on Adam!! Everyone knows Pong is the most amazing and technical game!! What can’t you talk about in terms of pong? It is so complex, two paddles, hitting a square across a screen. What is more interesting than that? (Ha, Ha)
The N64 was a weird one. My only memories of it were that it arrived too late to the fifth gen party to make much of an impact. The decision to use cartridges hurt it badly, but I think it was the PlayStation's success that really killed its chances - it was simply unstoppable by that point. What might have happened if only Nintendo had swallowed their pride and gone with CD’s…
If Nintendo 64 used CD-ROM, some third-party developers wouldn't have jumped from Nintendo. I really think a lot of RPG games, multi-plats, and DLCs being on the PlayStation and how it was advertised was the reason why it sold way more consoles than the N64. Even with the PlayStation they didn't have enough room to fit Final Fantasy VII on 1 CD-ROM and it sold like crazy. I never would have thought the N64 would have only sold 33 million consoles.
It really didn't come too late-- in 96 a lot of people were still waiting on what Nintendo was going to bring before deciding to buy. The problem was no one wanted to develop for it
Objectively I know the N64 isn’t the best console ever, but quite simply it is my favourite. I think for some (not all) people there are those years from around 10ish through to late teens where the lack of responsibility and more free-time lend itself beautifully to gaming. And during that time there’s that one console that just comes along in that sweet spot. The N64 is that console for me. It gave me so many great memories. I love it.
But did it really screw them though? I hear people talk about the N64 now a days more than the PS1. While the PS1 sold better the N64 is far more memorable. It just screams 90's nostalgia.
That’s more a backfire of the biggest drawback of the n64. Using cartridges instead of CDs. That’s why square, capcom, Konami etc. switched to Playstation. It was just better in every sense. I still like the n64 more but still it would’ve been so much better for Nintendo if they had used cds
Joy Pad True. The 64 managed to imbed itself deep into pop-culture. I really think where it suffered with the disc and third party drama, it made itself standout with the 4 controller ports honestly. When people think back, they’ll probably remember playing Mario Kart or Smash 4 player with a bunch of family/friends more then they would the PS1. Something about it just has so much personality for some reason.
I think it was the exodus of 3rd parties in general due to the expensive cartridge format. So Squaresoft, Konami, Capcom, etc companies that once only made games on Nintendo consoles really didn't bother much with the N64.
@@michaellancaster4444 nah people talk more about PS1 than N64 especially in JRPG community man N64 has no good JRPG only games thats is good on N64 is the First Party Exclusives (WAVE RACE 64 BEST GAME) but aside from that there is nothing PS1 has way more better game library than N64
Well, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is considered one of the greatest games ever written (even being the first game to score a perfect 40 in Famitsu Magazine), and it was originally written for the N64.
I remember being in 5th grade. I had a magazine, I believe GamePro but maybe not. It had a picture of the "ultra 64". With the full rainbow of those weird controllers lined up underneath it. I remember thinking and at that point it may have been the coolest thing I had ever seen in my entire life. A year or so later I got a different magazine... It had boobs in it... The N64 was still very cool just not boobs cool.
The Nintendo 64 will always have a special place in my heart. While I won't deny that the Playstation definitely had superior hardware, I still think the Nintendo 64 was able to measure up to it in terms of its game library. I remember seeing so many awesome Nintendo 64 commercials back in the day. The Smash Bros and Banjo-Tooie commercials are still two of my favorites to this day. And "Get N or Get Out" slogan was badass. The PS1 and N64 are both equally amazing to me
You should totally continue these videos. They're very informative, and they can help gamers new and old learn something about the history of the various systems.
I can name a few that have aged well today just from my collection alone and I'll even leave out the 1st party stuff as well as Rareware games (the latter because they got better versions on XBLA). There's... Body Harvest, Hybrid Heaven, all four AKI/THQ wrestling games, Fighter Destiny 2, Bomberman 64 and Harvest Moon 64. Almost half of those games I hadn't even played until recently, so I can confirm there was no nostalgia required to enjoy 'em and, if you need proof that nostalgia didn't play any part in making this list, I used to absolutely love the 1st gen Pokemon games... I can't stand their guts now.
AlexanderTheNotSoGreat I guess. I didn't name it for a few reasons. 1. It's a 1st party game 2. I don't own it 3. Outside of Pokemon, I don't like turn-based combat systems so the game never really had a chance with me
14:13 Actually, according to Wikipedia, the Dual Analog (the predecessor to the DualShock, and had rumble in the Japanese version) and the N64 Rumble Pak came out around the same time in Japan, in April 1997. Not sure which one exactly came out first, since the N64 Rumble Pak doesn’t have an exact release date, but it’s worth pointing that out. Sony were also the first ones to have rumble built into their controllers too (and the first to have a second analog stick), which became standard after the Dreamcast died. They were also the first to have buttons inside the sticks themselves with the DualShock, so Sony did innovate more than you might’ve thought with the PS1.
4th Generation, yes please. I'm mainly curious about your experience since I've figured that I must be close to 10 years older than you and learning about your POV of those systems would be interesting. Also, regarding the N64 controllers, they were designed that way because Nintendo thought that 3D would be a fad and that having a nice big d-pad where people are use to having one would allow them to jump back easily with 2D games if their predictions would have come true.
I actually rented a Japanese N64 a local store had before the North American one came out. They would rent it out with Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64. My friend came over when I brought it home, and when we first popped in Mario, our first reaction to the whole "It's a me, Mario!" line was practically "Holy. Shit." Then we went around the castle for what seemed like hours just screwing around because it just looked so badass. Damn I miss those days...
Only one thing makes Nintendo compete today with playstation and xbox1...nostalgia! The people who were loyal to Nintendo for the gameboy, nes, snes, n64, gamecube, will always love Nintendo! We love Zelda, Mario, Metroid!
john tucker of course not, i grew up with nes and there is a sense of nostalgia there with certain games that nothing now will replace. But kids now still love mario (which is good 8 yr olds should be playing nintendo) and nintendo competes also because that is a niche that the others haven't covered. My loyalty dropped off at gamecube, lol, there's only certain amount of time I have for games and can't have a bunch of platforms. However if I had a kid (or more time) I would be happy to have a Wii U in the house. I was just discussing this nostalgia as it relates to Star Wars. A friend and I were agreeing that no matter how "great" the next one is we'll still be disappointed, because it won't live up to 3, 4, and 5. Why, because we're adults now and the originals were childhood magic and nothing trumps childhood magic.
+john tucker I think it's the 3ds that's keeping them afloat it's sold more than the ps4 and Xbox one combined. The new 3ds is the best handheld console ever in my opinion.
I've been collecting N64 games since Covid started. Im going for a complete worldwide collection. Im 63 American games away from collecting the North American portion of the library! If you haven't already, play Custom Robo, Custom Robo V2, and Sin and Punishment; 3 Japanese exclusives that are 3 of my favorite N64 games!
Today, the N64 can be found for really cheap, Yes, the graphics and sound aren't up to today's standards. But give the Nintendo 64 a chance, especially if you're into multiplayer games with your friends. Old school games are still great fun.
You forgot to mention that Nintendo 64 was originally called Nintendo Ultra 64 because Nintendo at the time made a deal with Williams to make games for them and they were making games for arcade and home consoles and they ended up making 2 games with the williams nintendo deal first one was killer instinct developed by Rare and published by williams nintendo in the arcades and second was cruis'n usa developed by midway and published by williams nintendo both games came out in 1994 killer instinct it never came out on the Nintendo 64 it only came out on super nintendo and game boy but we had killer instinct gold (killer instinct 2) on nintendo 64 and cruis'n USA did come out on the Nintendo 64 both games came out in 1996
I subbed because of the 6th gen recap. I've since then enjoyed a lot of your videos, and the 5th gen recap is my favorite series you've made. Go for the 4th gen recap!
After just playing Crash Bandicoot on my Dad's PS1, the N64 was the second console I ever played due to my uncle having one. First game of course was Super Mario 64, and I remember being absolutely blown away with not only Mario introducing himself as soon as the game came on, also his head popping up and saying "hello". Think I pressed the reset button a few times just to see all that. After it was just a while with me, my two cousins, and I think my sister messing around with Mario's head, with someone holding one of the shoulder buttons. Years later my uncle got me one with a ton of games, and still enjoying. That system is always going to remind me of fun memories playing it with him and my cousins. Was surprised to find out though it had this mess behind it
My problem is I live in Orlando, we have a total of 3 used game stores, not counting Gamestop, One about 15 minutes from me in our mall on the east side. The Next one is about 45 minutes, and the last one is at the Florida Mall out past Disney and Universal. Prices are high on systems. I recently visited my family up north and got the Genesis for 25, it's 40 avg here, the PS1 (fat model) for 25 it's like 40, the PS2 (Fat perfect working order) for 40 while it's 75 here, and the psp was "given" to me as a bday gift, and around 45 bucks (with 2gb mem stick so yay!) while it's 75 down here.
I dare you to do every single generation and every single console. Even the portable ones, even if you didn't like them. Loving this series, keep it up!
Bringing up your childhood memories of the N64 made remember the night before i got it and the Christmas morning i did get it. I was playing SNES until late Christmas eve, i was 9 or 10, my mom told me to go to bed and I did. Woke up and got N64 with Mario Kart. Played it nonstop with brothers and friends. Favorite games were OoT, Goldeneye, Ogre Battle 64, Wrestle mania 2000, WCW/NWO Revenge, WWF No Mercy, Pokémon stadium, Jet Force Gemini, and many more. Great console! Awesome video, Adam!
Shout to the parents who made our childhood great!!! When he mentioned how his mom sporadically bought him a N64, that brought back memories of when my sisters, mother and father bought me games or a computer as a surprise on a special occasion growing up. One thing as a kid/teenager that made me mad as hell was when my father would make me bust my butt doing extra chores or tasks around and outside the house to get a game or console I wanted. I would have to clean and wash all his cars and my mothers too by hand, clean the front and backyard, his room, other rooms in the house, wash clothes for the house, oh and study for hours. I remember busting my butt in the Summer of 98 during a heat wave to get my special edition N64 console which came with a extra special edition controller. I was so excited to get it, but do to the heat wave, I couldn't play it for about a week and a few days. I will say this, by my parents making me work for most of the things I asked for as a child, I learned at a young age that if I want something in life I have to work hard to get it. You also have more respect for your stuff that you worked hard for, plus that feeling you get. I still have my consoles, Pc's and games from my childhood along with the ones I purchased as an adult. I can truly say I put in the work to get each an every one of them, I'm truly grateful to my parents for teaching me about workmenship.
Man I remember getting my first n64 for christmas in '98. What a teriffic console and I still play it to this very day. Those were the days just three or four buddies playing some n64 games for weekend and not caring about anything else. I watched all of your fifth generation videos and they are awesome, kudos and keep up the good work!
Can you do the fourth generation please and also, the 4-5th portable generation and 6-7th portable generation please. I know you are not fan of portable system.
We had similar childhoods, apparently. I had autographed Jordan, Penny, Webber, and Shaq stuff tho. Man, i remember everyone scrambling to get an N64 before they sold out. Christmas time was near and that feeling when there is a chase item was in the air. It was getting cold and the stores were packed and filled with holiday music. Adults were talking to store employees about expected shipments and radio giveaways had everyone tuning in. There were two hurdles to jump back then: you had to get an N64, but just as important, you HAD to get Mario 64. There truly was something magical about seeing Mario 64. Seeing it in game stores on demo consoles at the mall and all the adults talking about it and attempting to secure a copy for their kids was very memorable. The mall was alive with the Nintendo/Mario 64 buzz. I havent seen or felt that much hype and buzz since then. Good times. And.... there's something about the cartidges. They may have had their limitations, but damn, they were perfectly sized, intriguing objects, revered as alien technology. Their weight and shape was perfect, everything about them was awesome. They felt so much more important than a cd and that may have helped fuel the N64 frenzy.
I remember seeing N64s in store, with all those boxed cartridges. xD I never had one, nor did I want one. I had a PSone with Klonoa, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Rayman and a whole bunch of other titles that kept me happy. I remember having 0 desire for the machine mainly because of the controller, and to this day is the #1 reason I don't own one.
***** Well it's the one system I use emulators for. I cannot stand the N64 controller, especially since my hand are so big now. Especially since the Saturn had the same amount of buttons, but in a more ergonomic layout. So do not worry, I've played them and enjoyed them, but I still do not like the controller, and remains my least favorite controller of all time.
+TnVGaming you made a good decision with the ps1, its the best 5th gen console, but nintendo had like 7 good games every gamer should play. i couldnt agree more though, i felt sad for anyone who had a n64 at that time, n64 lacked games, mario and zelda got stale fast
Paul Oniel I do not regret it, I loved my PSone and still do. As for the N64, the few games that fascinate me are Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, and Conker's Bad Fur Day, other than that, nothing really wows me on N64. And on a side note: I recently got into the Saturn, and wow, even that machine has a shit-ton of exclusive titles that blow away the Nintendo 64 in my honest opinion. =P
I have so many great memories with the Nintendo 64. I got in for my birthday in October, 1996. Here are some of my favorite games: - Ogre Battle 64 - Pilotwings 64 - Goldeneye - Perfect Dark - Ocarina of Time - Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire - Mario Kart 64 - Turok - Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness - Star Fox 64 - F-Zero X - Mischief Makers - Mario Party 2 - Super Mario 64 - Wave Race 64
I totally feel where you are coming from with the nostalgia of childhood consoles. Being slightly younger than you Adam it was the Dreamcast for me. Code Veronica, Chu Chu rocket, Jet set radio. Great days.
Your mom sounds like an awesome person. My mom wasn't much on the gaming stuff, my dad bought all my game systems. I had a great time with the N64 as a kid, lots of great first-party titles.
eric gaza I can't say its my fav but its my 3rd fave. To each his own and I have been playing since NES. I loved N64 but PS2 was my favorite followed by the Gamecube and then the N64. 6th gen was my favorite gen overall because I liked all 3 of the systems. N64 had the best titles of it's day imho and I have a special place for it in my heart and still own mine. It turned me into a hardcore gamer.
eric gaza for me, the PS1 vs N64 debate essentially boils down to the game lineups, specifically the fact the N64 lineup is very limiting, while the PS1 lineup was substantially more diverse. See, my 4 favorite genres are RPGs, Shmups, Survival Horrors, and 2D side-scrollers, and the N64 was literally a barren wasteland for those genres, so the PlayStation was a easy pick. Heck, I'd take the Saturn over the N64, given that it actually had some games in the genres I play.
Adam Ellis they both had games you wanted to play regardless of which system you owned, yes Nintendo 64 was my favorite, but my cousins owned the ps1, so when I would visit, we would play games like, spyro, tekken, metal gear, crash bash was favorite, and ctr was awesome to, I even remember they had a fighter game for Jurassic park we enjoyed, and nowadays I would have to say my favorite type of games is open world/Sandbox, I'm one of those small percentage of people who don't enjoy RPG's.
eric gaza omg this is the same with my, I had the N64, my cousin closest to my age had a PS1. Ah the memories! AS a kid my favorites for the PS1 were twisted metal 2, spyro 1 and 2, crash 2, and all the JP titles.
Darth Malak yeah most of the games that where the Best where single player, so we always where forced to play multiplayer, which usually turned into bringing my 64 all the time
I've heard that Nintendo followed a philosophy which was "lateral thinking with withered technology," which proposes the idea that you don't necessarily have to have cutting edge technology in order to have fun games. While from a certain point of true, that can be true, it puzzles me why they wouldn't use more "cutting edge technology" in order to help enhance the graphics, storage capacity, and audio in order to help the experience of the gameplay.
You had a Playstation, N64, and eventually a Dreamcast when they were all relevant? I was playing the atari 2600 and then the NES. Heck, you upgraded to the dreamcast and I upgraded to the Genesis. 🤣
I was still playing super nintendo in 1997 then I got a ps1 until 1999 after that I got a dreamcast in 2001 then a ps2 until 2007 I never got a seventh generation console and I kept using the ps2 until I got a ps4 in 2015 I never got a console when they were relevant 😢
We got the Donkey Kong 64 console bundle for Christmas one year and to this day was my best Christmas ever! And this is saying a lot since the Christmas before I got my first dirt bike lol. My sisters and I spent a year playing Donkey Kong and still never ended up beating it lol
My mom did the same thing to me. I was in 7th grade, 12 years old, and she picked me up from school one day. You gotta understand in '96 when the N64 launched, they had Super Mario booths at stores that would let you play for like 10 min and then it would reset so the next person could have a turn. I remember playing it constantly at those things. All I could think was N64. I think my parents actually rented the console for me from Blockbuster for a week and I was devistated when we had to return it. Anyway long story short, she tells me to look under the car seat, I pull out Mario 64 rental from Blockbuster and at first I couldn't put 2 and 2 together lol. I look 👀 at her and she gives me the sweetest most loving look I remember and tells me she bought one for me and it's in the trunk. I flip out because it's months away from Christmas and my parents are letting me play it now. Still one of my best childhood memories ever. I love you mom and dad! Sorry I acted like a shit when I couldn't hook it up to our the at first. We still had those old tvs and had to buy an ref adapter lol. I threw a fit like a bitch.
would you do a series for portables? i dont think there are enough to do each generation of portables but you could do a series on portable gaming as a whole
After years of NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis, my parents bought me the PS1 for Christmas one year. It's at that point I realized I was a Nintendo guy, through and through.
Yeah, Adam, I'd love it if you did a retrospective of the 4th gen! After all, this is probably the content from your channel I watch and enjoy the most!
Adam, I love your videos and relate to them because I grew up with the same consoles. The only thing that is just unbelievable to me is that you were not aware of the Saturn in the mid 1990s?! You have said that you were a Sega fan, you might have picked Saturn for the 5th gen, had you known it existed. True, not very many people had it, but it was in all the video game mags at that time and was demoed at Target, Toys 'R' Us, KB Toys, etc. The 4th gen would be great, you must do it; please include Turbo Graphix. Last question, I bought the expanded battery for the WiiU that you did a video on. I was curious how you felt about it and thought you may do a follow-up vid about it. Thanks
Kyle Jett 1: Thanks. 2: I still don't know how I missed it, but I did. 3: I may. If I do, the TG-16 would be part of it. 4: I still like it, though I don't think it really needs a follow up video.
AdamKoralik Thanks for the response. Glad to know that you like the battery too. I will be on the lookout for the 4th gen videos! The people have spoken!
I'm binge watching you today. I dig these videos, man. Really wish the 64DD had stuck around a bit. I wonder, if it had, would Capcom have kept Resident Evil Zero on the platform, rather than moving it over to GameCube. Hell, Resident Evil 2 may have gone DD over cartridge in that case. Still, the N64 is my favorite Nintendo console to this day. It has my favorite Mario and Zelda games, along with GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong 64, Cruisin' USA, Jet Force Gemini, as well as some of the best Star Wars games I've ever played. Seriously, I miss it.
I agree with you. I am 29 and I loved the n64 so much i started to collect it again. I am playing Turok 2 seeds of evil again. first time in like 15 years!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane Adam, I miss when gaming was true to my heart. The last console to do that was the GameCube and before that the Dreamcast. The true days of gaming!
***** I think it's the only generation where I'm honestly not sure. On any given day I could go with the N64, PS1, or Saturn. Just depends on what mood I'm in. :/
xboxmodder02 That's a very small part of the reason. Mostly it was to make a more cost effective console, to make a medium they knew kids would be able to use, and of course their recent dreaded dealings with Sony and Philips.
Oh gawd yes do I want a fourth generation series! These videos are some of the best on them internets. Your knowledge and stories make them so enjoyable.
But the N64 is still more powerful than the PS1 even with cartridges. That's like saying the GameCube is weaker than the PS2, because of there 1.5 GB discs.Again, the power was there, it just couldn't be used to it's fullest potential.
Being unable to use that power makes it ultimately irrelevant. It's like saying, what's better? A Ferrari with no wheels or a beat up Geo that actually works? Which one would you get in to if you needed to get somewhere? Point is, the N64's use of cartridges held it back and allowed the PS1 and Saturn to have various advantages when they shouldn't have done that.
AdamKoralik Okay, I understand, but the N64 still had some good looking games. Conker's Bad Fur Day looks really great, I can't think of a 3D PS1 game off the top of my head that looks better siIvermate 1.5 GB and does 0.1 GB make a difference? The point is it's small.
Dipper723 Have you ever held a copy of Conker's Bad Fur Day in one hand and then another N64 game in the other? It's a heavy cartridge. It's kind of like the Resident Evil 2 cartridge. Was insanely expensive to produce and houses more memory than most games do. As a result, they were able to get more out of it. As a result, the game really didn't make any money, if anything it probably lost a lot. I know that doesn't really answer your question, as I don't have an answer off the top of my head to be honest, but it's interesting none the less.
I had roughly the same kind of experience in getting the N64. My mom decided to go out and get it for us, and I had no flippin' idea why. All I remember is that my Dad handed me our phone saying "Your Mom wants to know what color Nintendo controller you want", and I was just completely confused as to what he was even referring to since we had plenty of Super Nintendo controllers. She comes home later and plops the box down on the living room table and there it was, the N64. My fondest memories are playing Super Mario 64 with her a few times and watching how she sucked at it, and trying to do math homework while my brother was playing Zelda Ocarina of Time while feeling antsy about wanting to play it. And Goldeneye and Star Fox 64, those good times.
For a lot of people...yeah, I can't disagree haha. There are genuinely some people who go back to it though :) I went back to it about 2 years ago and it's...well, let's just say the nostalgia is probably more enjoyable than the experience itself. We've kind of been spoiled with FPS games - Goldeneye was a great game at the time but there are some inherent flaws in it. Not because they fucked up; just because it was early days. It was a natural step in the progression (and subsequent regression) of the first person shooter.
Nintendo 64. By far my favorite console of all time. Though it had a small library, it had some killer titles on it that shaped my childhood. Yeah, it hasn't aged well at all. But honestly, neither did any of its competitors. I still always make sure to take time to replay some N64 classics.
Over 10 years ago, me and my dad were trying to hunt down what would be the most collectible N64 for my collection. That game is Mario Party 3 because we owned Mario Party 1 and 2 and I told him about trying to find Mario Party 3. We looked forever for a good copy of the game, couldn’t get one that was until my uncle had the game and I bought it off of him for £10 (I think that’s $15). Now the price for Mario Party 3 is insanely high. £90 for a loose copy, £200 for a boxed copy and £250 for a mint copy with the box.
As a child I wanted the N64 but get the Playstation and I loved both so much. A friend of me had a N64 and I visited him often, so I was able to experience it and I loved Super Mario 64, Wave Race 64, Mario Kart 64, Turok, Blast Corps, Diddy Kong Racing.... This games blew my mind. The Sega Saturn was well known here in Germany from magazines or whatever, but I never saw one.
Got into console just a few years ago. I was into ps1 at that time. But it is a great console I really like it. For sure in my top ten for consoles and my 2nd favorite Nintendo console. Great video I learn so much from these and love your retrospectives.
I absolutely love the N64! So many memories with it, feel like the switch is a modern day version of the N64, with bringing back cartridges while Microsoft and Sony are going digital. So much nostalgia with Nintendo
Just discovered your channel Adam, really enjoyed the fifth generation retrospective. I'm going to get to watch your sixth generation retrospective as well. And yeah would love to see a forth (and previous gen!) retrospective series.
I really like these retrospectives, too. I really hope to see videos for the 3rd and 4th generations. Also, I would like to see retrospectives for the portable consoles. Love the channel and the videos.
When I was 8 or 9 on Halloween, my family typically went to my aunts house after we did trick or treating. I was pretty closed off from gaming at that time so I didn't really know what game consoles were. I had seen them but never fully experienced one. But out of nowhere my older cousin decides to just get out his N64 and hook it up. He put SW Dark Forces in it and my mind was fucking blown. I was at my aunts house till midnight playing that and Goldeneye multiplayer. Mind you, this was only 10 years ago. 2 generations after the N64 was even relevant. But even so, the N64 and playing Halo on the OG Xbox that same year will always be reminders of my childhood.
Your mom consistently comes up as being super cool. I hope you give her a lot of love for all the times your mom took you console shopping. The world would be a better place if we all had mom's like yours. ❤️
1st generation recap. I must have your opinions on Pong.
Can't see that one happening to be honest.
(Ha, Ha)
There were over 100 first generation consoles so I can see why he’s hesitant
The N64 was a weird one. My only memories of it were that it arrived too late to the fifth gen party to make much of an impact. The decision to use cartridges hurt it badly, but I think it was the PlayStation's success that really killed its chances - it was simply unstoppable by that point. What might have happened if only Nintendo had swallowed their pride and gone with CD’s…
If Nintendo 64 used CD-ROM, some third-party developers wouldn't have jumped from Nintendo.
I love it.
I think losing the Final Fantasy franchise was what screwed Nintendo the hardest in that era.
Banjo Kazooie showed that even with cartridge limiations the N64 was really powerful. That game looks and sounds freaking gorgeous even today.
"Do you want me to do this for the 4th generation?"
YES. YES, YES, YES, YES, YES.
I liked this little series, so please yes.
Thanks.
And he did it and it was awesome
"Goldeneye is a RARE exception" nice one adam
I remember being in 5th grade. I had a magazine, I believe GamePro but maybe not. It had a picture of the "ultra 64". With the full rainbow of those weird controllers lined up underneath it. I remember thinking and at that point it may have been the coolest thing I had ever seen in my entire life. A year or so later I got a different magazine... It had boobs in it... The N64 was still very cool just not boobs cool.
Lol
Nothing is boobs cool.
12:48
'A Rare exception"
I see what you did there... :D
Heyooooo.
Carts only have two negatives. 1. Storage 2. Cost. All the other ones you listed are symptoms of lack of storage.
Goldeneye "a RARE exception...haahaha...I see what you did there
The Nintendo 64 will always have a special place in my heart. The PS1 and N64 are both equally amazing to me
the jump from snes and genesis to playstation/n64/dreamcast was just amazing.. 3d gaming blew my mind when i was a kid :)
The only thing that sucked was that I had limited funds during that era
Now that the gaming historian is gone and AVGN is jumping the shark. These older Adam videos are some of the most nostalgic for me.
You should totally continue these videos. They're very informative, and they can help gamers new and old learn something about the history of the various systems.
Thanks!
I would love to see a gen 4 retrospective! The N64 was practically my life when I was a kid haha.
The N64 is better than the PS1 for me, because the exclusives.
How many of those aged well?
The ps1 stuff like MGS, Crash and Spyro do though.
1. It's a 1st party game
2. I don't own it
3. Outside of Pokemon, I don't like turn-based combat systems so the game never really had a chance with me
Stylish Bandit that's what I said
14:13 Actually, according to Wikipedia, the Dual Analog (the predecessor to the DualShock, and had rumble in the Japanese version) and the N64 Rumble Pak came out around the same time in Japan, in April 1997.
+will rec I might do them separately. Honestly I don't have much passion for them.
In retrospective, cartridge based consoles are just way more reliables, and you don't have to wait all the loading times...
I probably will, could be a while though. Thanks for watching!
+john tucker kids too....kids love mario.
Yeah but kids won't love mario in same way someone will if they were a kid when mario was released.
john tucker of course not, i grew up with nes and there is a sense of nostalgia there with certain games that nothing now will replace.
Brodie Miller good point. they dominate that segment.
14:55 LOL! You had to get a Blockbuster picture with a "store closing" sign! xD
i remember when the N64 came out i bugged my mum LITERALLY for 3 years! i finally got one in 2000 for xmas in Australia!!
What an awesome mom. Loved hearing your stories.
Thanks for taking the time to do so.
Today, the N64 can be found for really cheap, Yes, the graphics and sound aren't up to today's standards. But give the Nintendo 64 a chance, especially if you're into multiplayer games with your friends. Old school games are still great fun.
I still have friends over to play Blitz
Your comment has not aged well. Late 2018 $80-$130 for a system and first party games are $20-$80! Crazy times
The N64 should’ve just had a floppy drive built in
You forgot to mention that Nintendo 64 was originally called Nintendo Ultra 64 because Nintendo at the time made a deal with Williams to make games for them and they were making games for arcade and home consoles and they ended up making 2 games with the williams nintendo deal first one was killer instinct developed by Rare and published by williams nintendo in the arcades and second was cruis'n usa developed by midway and published by williams nintendo both games came out in 1994 killer instinct it never came out on the Nintendo 64 it only came out on super nintendo and game boy but we had killer instinct gold (killer instinct 2) on nintendo 64 and cruis'n USA did come out on the Nintendo 64 both games came out in 1996
Man an autographed Bulls photo AND an N64 *on the same day*? No wonder you questioned what your mom's deal was lol Great video as always, Adam
That childhood "console" for me is the amiga 500. Still have our original one. Still runs great
I subbed because of the 6th gen recap. I've since then enjoyed a lot of your videos, and the 5th gen recap is my favorite series you've made. Go for the 4th gen recap!
Thanks!
Was surprised to find out though it had this mess behind it
This video is in a snippet on WatchMojo.com
David Robitaille WatchMojo is fucking cancer.
Oh man, that day getting the bulls picture and the N64 must have been mind blowing! Very awesome 👏 .
One wonders what the “cost” for that was his mom paid LOL 😉
4th generation recap? DO IT!!!
Yes , more
I may.
AdamKoralik will you do a huge Super Nintendo vs Sega Genesis with your fans sending in what console is their favorite and why?
Nathan Kelly
Can't say I was planning on it.
Can you at least ask everyone if they want it to happen
My problem is I live in Orlando, we have a total of 3 used game stores, not counting Gamestop, One about 15 minutes from me in our mall on the east side. The Next one is about 45 minutes, and the last one is at the Florida Mall out past Disney and Universal. Prices are high on systems. I recently visited my family up north and got the Genesis for 25, it's 40 avg here, the PS1 (fat model) for 25 it's like 40, the PS2 (Fat perfect working order) for 40 while it's 75 here, and the psp was "given" to me as a bday gift, and around 45 bucks (with 2gb mem stick so yay!) while it's 75 down here.
what video isn't part of our quick shoot series lol. love ur content bud
Love my N64 and my favorite game was Conker's Bad Fur Day. It definitely showed the capabilities of the system alone (without add-ons)
Goldeneye was a rare exception...I see what you did there.
I dare you to do every single generation and every single console. Even the portable ones, even if you didn't like them. Loving this series, keep it up!
Thanks, but that would be far too challenging of an undertaking.
Hey Adam! I really like your videos and I find them very calming and enjoyable. I kinda wish they were on iTunes as podcasts ;)
HeroesOfTime Thanks!
I probably will at some point.
Great thank you. ^_^
Adam Koralik
this is not the first controller with a joystick
Neo geo cd??? anybody??
The Jump Pak isn't RAM, it's a terminator for the onboard system RAM.
I think it would've been cool if the N64DD got a proper release, I imagine there'd be a ton of games that got ported from other consoles.
4th Generation videos would be totally radical in a supremely tubular fashion.
Or in other words, yes please.
The fifth generation was in my mind "The best generation."
I rented starfox and kept the rumble pak. Wrestlemania 2000 and no mercy were the best wrestling games period.
My go to was WCW/NWO Revenge. A super simple game but because of that it was (as far as I'm concerned) perfection.
Yes, please, do the 4th gen too.
I'm LOVING the videos. Nostalgia overload.
Thanks!
+TnVGaming i agree man
The controller is fine. Hold the middle and right prongs and its really comfortable
I have so many great memories with the Nintendo 64. I got in for my birthday in October, 1996. Here are some of my favorite games:
- Ogre Battle 64
- Pilotwings 64
- Goldeneye
- Perfect Dark
- Ocarina of Time
- Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
- Mario Kart 64
- Turok
- Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
- Star Fox 64
- F-Zero X
- Mischief Makers
- Mario Party 2
- Super Mario 64
- Wave Race 64
"Rogue Squadron... well... I want to say it's like Star Fox."
...ouch.
I totally feel where you are coming from with the nostalgia of childhood consoles. Being slightly younger than you Adam it was the Dreamcast for me.
Code Veronica, Chu Chu rocket, Jet set radio. Great days.
The Bulls part is awesome
Hell yeah.
Your mom sounds like an awesome person. My mom wasn't much on the gaming stuff, my dad bought all my game systems. I had a great time with the N64 as a kid, lots of great first-party titles.
Took her a few years to come around.
I heard Nintendo used cartridges because they were harder to pirate
same reason they used small disks for GameCube
+almighty_luigi That's why they took so long to switch to disc
To be honest with you Adam I grew up with the Nintendo 64 and the Play station and I love The N64 and the PS1 they're awesome systems
PlayStation had it's moment's, but Nintendo 64 is the greatest system of all time, fuck the world!!!!!!!!.............great video man.
eric gaza I can't say its my fav but its my 3rd fave.
Darth Malak yeah most of the games that where the Best where single player, so we always where forced to play multiplayer, which usually turned into bringing my 64 all the time
I love these videos, you are simultaneously talking about everyone's childhoods. Definitely please do a 4th gen recap.
Thanks for watching!
Nintendo Exec: We need a D-pad AND a joystick on the SAME controller
Hardware Engineer: Impossible
Nintendo Exec: |_|_|
I may eventually. Could be...a while. I don't have much passion for handhelds to be honest.
AdamKoralik Maybe a VMU video? It does deserve one. :) Very underrated.
lordcanti
Assuming this counts, then I did that: Keep Dreaming - Official Sega Dreamcast VMU Overview & Comparison US - EUR - Adam Koralik
Yeah true!
After years of NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis, my parents bought me the PS1 for Christmas one year. It's at that point I realized I was a Nintendo guy, through and through.
You're friend saved you from becoming a Sony Pony.
Yeah, Adam, I'd love it if you did a retrospective of the 4th gen! After all, this is probably the content from your channel I watch and enjoy the most!
Thanks.
+Raessentia "Quick shoot."
Richard woo
Not sure what that has to do with anything...
Richard woo I could be wrong, I thought I mentioned the J-Cart in the video. Honestly I don't remember.
Much appreciated!
17:00 I did that for the Sega Genesis for a few years. Now I have one and LOVE IT. Fanboyism is dumb.
And here you are, 10 years younger. Time flies…
No OOT? Blasphemy
I agree with you. I am 29 and I loved the n64 so much i started to collect it again. I am playing Turok 2 seeds of evil again. first time in like 15 years!
Good video really enjoyed it
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane Adam, I miss when gaming was true to my heart. The last console to do that was the GameCube and before that the Dreamcast.
The true days of gaming!
Thanks for watching!
+Walter Gonzalez Thanks!
U should do versus consoles like the sega Genesis versus super Nintendo
***** I think it's the only generation where I'm honestly not sure. On any given day I could go with the N64, PS1, or Saturn. Just depends on what mood I'm in. :/
xboxmodder02 That's a very small part of the reason. Mostly it was to make a more cost effective console, to make a medium they knew kids would be able to use, and of course their recent dreaded dealings with Sony and Philips.
AdamKoralik What I know RE2 for the N64 was 500MBytes
sinchman1 No, no it wasn't. It was a 64 MB cartridge.
Mario Kart DS had bosses and introduced online play, though!
You make quite a point but arguably it was the strongest because it basically skipped two generations from 16 to 64 and NOBODY SAY JAGUAR!!
D O T H E M A T H
Oh gawd yes do I want a fourth generation series! These videos are some of the best on them internets. Your knowledge and stories make them so enjoyable.
Thanks!
1.4 GBs*
AdamKoralik Okay, I understand, but the N64 still had some good looking games. Conker's Bad Fur Day looks really great, I can't think of a 3D PS1 game off the top of my head that looks better
siIvermate 1.5 GB and does 0.1 GB make a difference? The point is it's small.
Dipper723
I just don't get where people come up with 1.5 GBs, because mini-DVDs only come in 1.4 GBs
Saying "I love Goldeneye 007 for the N64" is the same as saying "I haven't played Goldeneye 007 for the N64 in fifteen years."
+Rollout I don't see how, I played it again as recently as last year.
No, some people like the game.
Dude, you keep mentioning your mom that you should actually do a video with her. 😁 Just cause you keep mentioning her. Lol
Didn't like the 64. Traded mine in for a ps1.. Good decision
Thanks dude!
Yes do the 4th Gen! I think all the generation recap episodes are great, getting to hear your experiences reminds me of my own
Thanks for watching!
yeah man! please do more generations, or talk more about this one, you're so natural at it it's amazing! You're really passionate about it
