Exploring a Strange Abandoned Ashram in Rishikesh, India
You visited the ashram, but you mainly visited places that had not been built when the Beatles were there in 1968. You say all the artwork is so psychedelic, but the graffiti is very recent. There was no graffiti back then. You say those of us who stayed at the ashram were taking drugs, but Maharishi did not allow any drugs or alcohol in the ashram. John Lennon called Maharishi "Sexy Sadie" not because he was charismatic, but because the Beatles were told by "Magic Alex" Alexis Mardas that Maharishi had made a pass at various women. And that is one reason why John and George left Maharishi in a huff. None of the beehive looking meditation huts were built when the Beatles were there. What was named "The Beatles Cave" was not there when the Beatles visited. The row of buildings in front of which you saw the shiva lingas-- that was where the students, including the Beatles, stayed in 1968 and I stayed in 1970. The "Beatles Cathedral Gallery" that is covered in graffiti wasn't built yet. The "yoga hall", which now has no roof, was the only place that you went inside of that had been built in 1970 when I was at Maharishi's ashram. That large building that you climbed to the top of had not been built in 1970 when I was there. The picture you saw with only John, Paul, and George where there was no Ringo was the first time the Beatles met Maharishi, in the Park Hilton Hotel , August 24, 1967. Ringo was in the hospital with his wife because she had just given birth. You did not even film Maharishi's house at all. Did you miss it? It was very near that large building. @@john-judegarvey7472The people who were on Maharishi's Teacher Training Course when I was there in Rishikesh were not smoking Cannabis. They were meditating.
@@john-judegarvey7472 This is not about hating. This is about providing some information about what actually happened in Rishiksesh when Maharishi and the Beatles were there. Were you there with Maharishi? Because I was on Maharishi's TM Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh for 6 months in 1970, and I also visited in 2001, 2007, 2010, and 2013. Gabriel Traveler who posted this video is grateful for the information. So please cool your jets.

To see these "hippy ruins" and the artwork that celebrates that long gone era of flowerchild hopes and ideals of peace and love that were lost to greed and war, was a moving experience, especially on George's day of passing. He was the devotee of Hinduism and eastern spirituality and mysticism, more than any of the others including his cosmic pal John Lennon. You were very good with your knowledge of The Beatle's in India and the great songs "Dear Prudence" and "Sexy Sadie". This was a sad reminder of all that was lost, and a bitter sweet celebration of what remains important-as shown in your excellent and enjoyable travel videos as you bring to life John Lennon and Yoko Ono's great ideal: "One World One People!" Just found about you two weeks ago when I decided to go backpacking in India for six weeks next May. You're help has been invaluable so far and I changed my initial plans sometimes based on your experiences. Rishikesh was already on the map because of your other videos but now it really is decided. If I may give a suggestion for a video is a how to travel in India. One of the best videos I have seen on you tube. I have been in Rishikesh but missed this Ashram. Gabriel, just an fyi... the Ram Jula and Lakshman Jhula are not just two bridges. They represent a very very important aspect in the story of hinduisn. The Ram Jhula was built by Hindu god Ram as he was looking for wife Sita who was captured by demon king Ravana. Lakshman was Ram's brother. He was also involved in the search for Sita, and he also built a bridge to get across the Ganga. So these two bridges are possibly of greater significance to the town of Rishikesh and an important hindu pilgrimage. Yoga and meditation are secondary developments in the town of Rishikesh.

I passed by the gate about 20 years ago and there was no way to get in. A guard was watching the gate very carefully, and begging him didn't help. So all I have is a photo of the gate!

I think the magic probably fizzled and the community dissipated, but I don't really know what happened.
Jesse St Louis The ashram was abandoned in 1984 because the supreme court of India turned the whole place into a national park called the Shahaji National park. The Maharishi did not own this place and had it on lease.
There were lots of issues regarding taxes on the place is what I heard when there, it was cheaper to up sticks to the USA and make an ashram there.

Beatles were also followers of Hare Krishna. George was Krishna devotee and spent a lot of time in Vrindavan. Who knew that they had this ashram here! Thanks for getting us here. It was great.

When I read abandoned and India I think about those destroyed temples or that giant power plant left by Enron. Perhaps you should visit those too.

Gabriel, awesome video, I liked it except when you climbed up, as I got some vertigo issues..also if u want u focus a fraction on non-English instructions, as many of us can read and translate those i guess! Are you visiting Mount Kailash(Tibet), the place where, the guy on your tshirt , Shiva lives?
I would absolutely love to visit Mt. Kailash but I won't be doing that this trip. For one thing it's too cold there now but also it's very complicated to try to get there since it's in China, and in a very remote part of Tibet.

He died in 2008, so it was abandoned before then. Definitely would be interesting to hear the full story, if there isn't a book about it there should be...or a movie.
The lease of land got over in 80's and they couldnt extend it as it became a part of national park I guess.

Very cool video. It would have been interesting to see that place in its heyday. Looks like they are trying to capitalize on Westerners desire to visit the place by jacking the prices. Safe travels.
David Smith, if you compare entry fees for sites in India with western sites, Indian fees are too low even for foreign citizens.
Now, why we charge extra: foreigners thinks that the rates of everything(not talking about these sites) in India are cheap rates but it's not true. These rates are very high for us but as our currency's value is low compared to dollar hence you guys feels it cheap.
Whereas when an Indian visit a site in foreign country, he has to pay their charges, the same charges paid by locals. But now, those charges for us Indians are too much. So technically, we pay extra charges over there and you guys pay extra charges over here. And those extra charges are not applicable for all the sites but only for few sites.
Also, we have large middle class over here who can not afford high pricing of these sites but being an Indian, we have all the rights to visit those sites hence low charges.
Also, those charges include many taxes which we pay to our government separately hence you can say we get concession for that.

Any way to verify if some of the artwork was actually painted on the walls in the late 60's when the Beatles were there?
I don't think it would have been painted then. From what I've gathered it wasn't a free-for-all party atmosphere but was a more focused place about meditation, etc. Apparently the maharishi weened the Beatles off LSD, some say anyway.

Hey Gabriel how much was the drink and bread at the beginning of the video. That is one of my favorite parts of your videos is when you explain the price and the conversion as well!
I forget the exact price but it was very cheap. Normally a masala dosa is around 30-40 rupees which is just 50-60 cents, and the lassi was probably 20-30 rupees. So around a dollar for both of those.
I was surprised to see the ashram that the beatles stayed at in such shambles!What a shame!
Did you see anything different this time compared to your last visit? 600 rupees seems a bit pricey, especially when you consider many world heritage sites cost less to enter, and the taj mahal is only 1000 🙄
I agree. Nothing had changed since five years ago, it was exactly the same as it was before, other than the sign at the entrance. Only other thing was a few different paintings on the walls.

Just random people who visited before it was officially opened. As I mentioned, the last time I went there you paid the security guard to let you in, and there were no rules about painting. So some of the people who went there made the different murals. I guess there won't be any more art created there now that it's not allowed.

Awesome and super interesting video, Gabriel. Everything is on point with the editing and music, I just wish you were using a bit more stabilization for the video and it would be even more enjoyable to watch. Isn't there like a cheap electronics shop in Rishikesh that has some Gopro gimbles?
I need to get the GoPro 6 which apparently has better internal stabilization. I wouldn't want to use a gimbal for travel videos because it would attract too much attention walking around crowded foreign places.

The original title for Sexy Sadie was different, Lennon originally wanted to title the song "Maharishi", but changed the title to "Sexy Sadie" at George Harrison's request. Lennon was disillusioned after Maharishi Mahesh Yogi had allegedly made a sexual advance towards Mia Farrow attending the course the Maharishi was teaching at this ashram.
