I used to work operating India's first white water jet boat in the rapids up stream from Rishikesh from 1993 to 1995. Some things still look the same around the bridges but most shops are zoomed up, bigger and well lit. Chota Wala was a great place to eat and probably still is today. I lived at Son Prya Ganga a private estate (only invited guests can get through the gate so do not try to go there) upstream from the Laxman bridge. Along the river we had numerous encounters with tigers, leopards and all sorts of interesting people walking to the 5 temples of Shiva way up in the mountains. South of Rishikesh just above the dam on the far side of the river from the Ganga Kanari Hotel, elephants come down to the river in the winter dry season and very colorful tiny ducks from Russia can be found in the quiet water. If you are familiar with being with wild elephants you could do as I used to and go talk to them. Once the biggest bull has made his false charge at you to show the girls just who is in charge and you do not go closer things settle down. I once saw a Japanese man sitting out in the open river bed playing his flute to the enjoyment of the elephants. Everything will happen if you are ready for the world to happen. It is India!

      Martin Says:

      Hello,
The ashram was abandoned in 1984 because the supreme court of India turned the whole place into a national park called the Shahaji National park. The Maharishi did not own this place and had it on lease. Once the ruling was passed, there was little the Maharishi could do but abandon the land. Just weeks before the place had to be abandoned, the local forest authorities told the ashram workers that they could take with them all that they could before the deadline and because of this there are no switchboards, taps, furniture and metal parts left in the ashram. Everything was ransacked and sold off in the local market.
The meditation halls were aircondtioned… In the 1960’s n that too in an Indian forest! There was a helipad, a post office and a bank inside the ashram. All this made the place pretty remarkable.
A lot of private companies are interested in acquiring this property and turning it into a meditation resort but the Indian forest act does not allow this. Only government bodies are allowed to touch the place and Indian government being corrupt and lethargic, you can expect this place to rot and crumple one day for sure.
There is only one guard looking after the place. By law, no on is allowed to enter this ruins but the guards are lenient and let people inside if you just hand them some money.
If anyone wants to get there, get to rishikesh and ask for ‘chaurasi kuti’ which means 84 huts in Hindi. The ashram had roughly 84 huts, hence the name.
Also, there is a ‘Vithal ashram’ in rishikesh. The locals might guide you to that ashram because vithal and beatles sound the same to them. Just ask them to take you to chaurasi kuti across the ‘barage’ which means a dam. So if you want to get to the ashram, cross the dam over the Ganga and get to the other side. There is a ferry service too.
      Ok.. Take care all.

Shivanada charitable hospital people are very helpful. Last year I visited hrishikesh. It was raining, I fell down & had ankle sprain. Shivanada hospital was the nearest so went there, they treated me, gave tablets & support for joint sprain. They didn't even take even one rupee for treatment. That would have easily coated them 2000rs above. Even after repeated request they said if you want to you can donate in some temple, it's complete free service.

Dear Gabriel, this video is really amazing for me. One of my highest dreams is to be there some day. I am from Mexico City and I have practice meditacion for many years, and there is where spiritual guides give their satsangs to the devotees. Unfortunatelly is very expensive for me to get there, but you make me feel I am there. Your videos have the magic to transport me to the place. I am very grateful for that. I think you are a great being, thank you very much Gabriel!!!

Just back from my trip to Rishikesh. Thank you so much for you videos Gabriel as they set me up for the trip so well! It was incredible to walk around and remember and recognise the locations from your videos! I stayed in Tapovan which is the opposite side of Laxman Jhula and up the hill a way and it was amazing. After staying in the Ashram where I did my teacher training, I stayed in the Raj Resort hotel for a couple of nights which was great as the cheaper rooms were 600 INR per night for a large bed, kitchen with fridge and bathroom with a decent shower and hot water. I had a creek flowing outside the room which was amazing for meditation in the morning and drowning out the street noise too so a great find! Thank you again for your videos, I kept expecting to see you walking round the corner videoing!! I look forward to going back again when I have more time and exploring more for example I want to do the Annapurna circuit and go up to the Gangotri glacier next time and up to Ladakh as well as Amritsar 💕✨🙏🏻✨💕

Thanks for taking us on an informative and vicarious tour of Rishikesh, off the beaten path, as it were. You must have oodles of stamina, my man, trudging down roads and alleyways at such a brisk pace. Your friendly greetings to the locals not withstanding, I find that your interaction with the locals is limited. Perhaps, it is more trouble than it is worth? At any rate, I am happy that you were not harassed by the seemingly ubiquitous scammers, who build a wall of distrust between visitors and the genuine warmth of India. Keep up the good work, bro!

I love your videos Gabriel. Even though I have been to a lot of the places you have, and in some cases stayed at the same hotels, watching your videos takes me back for some really fun memories. If you get a chance go to Kunjapuri Devi temple for sunrise.

Hey Gabriel Meant to mention on the ashram vid. It's gotten pretty expensive there. No longer by donation. At least according to what it says on their website. Lovely place though and we thought it would be like a refuge from the street for a while

Things are sure to get expensive in future too as it's a growing economy. Expect a rise of 5-6% in prices every year.
