      @mtv-vevo i commented something about this too! escapism was exactly what pop music needs and i really hope raye releases similar music. I just gave prada a listen and while it’s not something i see going viral in the usa, it does have a 2010s european club music kind of vibe. Not something i’d purposely put on though, while escapism is something i still like to listen to even a year later.

    I think another reason why we don’t idolize these pop artists as much today is just because times have changed. We have the world at our fingertips our attention spans have gotten shorter, there are constantly new shiny things to rave about, we’re not forced to consume what comes up on our tv. i think a reason why t swift could regain such an extreme, extreme power (something you can't tell me she didn't) is because she is one of the only ones that actually still has the vibe of a popstar from the early 2010 (big tour, prominent boyfriend, lots of new and exciting music, long career) and she really feeds into that nostalgia that many people are experiencing (for example with her rerecordings)

      Taylor Swift saw the most notable spikes in influence, popularity, and significance within the last 2 years - an era she WASNT EVEN RELEASING NEW MUSIC. No one even admits her last album midnights is her best work, or frankly even a great album. That inherently means theres something else going on all of a sudden other than music. I personally just think shes become the Stanley cup of the musical industry where social media has led young people to compete in obsessing over her in order to fit in. I promise you this, that her place at the top will be very short lived. People will of course still be fans to an extent, but she will CERTAINLY not have a decades long influence over the direction of pop music. Especially considering only one demographic of people listen to her music - white, straight, cis girls under the age of 35.

    I really feel like Dua Lipa has so much potential to become a true pop icon when we look back at the music of today. She's already had numerous huge hits like Levitating, Don't Start Now, One Kiss, New Rules, Cold Heart, even Dance The Night from Barbie. Her latest album 'Future Nostalgia' was a perfect pop album with strong 80s synth influence while still being very modern and I think that combination of eras of pop was a big part of it's success. I also think she has that strong sense of 'image' (from how she previews her music (being very mysterious about Houdini) to fans and how she exists on social media) that big pop artists had in the 2000s and 2010s but is sort of lacking in artist's now (besides my girl Olivia Rodrigo she has purple locked in). Also no shade to the Olivia's and Tate's of pop but I do sorta believe Dua's age (not that she's old by any means but she's 28 compared to Olivia/Tate who are literally 20) might play a role in this as her voice + image has had more time to mature. I won't hide that I'm a Dula Peeper which might make me a liiiitle biased but I do believe she has so much more potential and talent to be shown even after already having numerous global hits

She’s the only ‘’og’’ pop star who never stopped, she outlived them all, so now she’s pretty much got the pop star monopoly until she decides to let it go

    Back in 2010, my 80 years old grandma knew who Katy Perry, Beyonce, Brytney Spears and Lady Gaga were because the girlies were putting in the work. They were performing on live TV shows with large audience, doing radio interviews right, left and center (I'm from Europe).
    Nowadays she would have NO CLUE who Olivia Rodrigo or SZA are, even Dua Lipa and Harry Styles I fear.
    Even I, a very invested pop listener, can't name a single song of Bad Bunny or Sabrina Carpenter.
    Because the promo game has changed, and labels will not pay the money to get them performing accross the world anymore. It's all about having a moment on tiktok, and spotify playlisting. Very very few will reach a wide demographics and become pop icons now.

I am in Europe and artists like Sza don't really blow up here so yeah, i don't know her songs too. I check who wins the grammys every year and sadly i don't know most of these people, only their names, like victoria monet because she works with ariana grande. Dua was quite a huge artist and her future nostalgia really resonated with me (so as Positions) because it was my 'fall in love' era, yk, a covid relationship. But i don't think people in late 40s know dua's name. I really grieve pop and i don't think it can be saved, ariana did come back but her track wasn't that big of a bop and i think her album will be more like a beyonce's lemonade (her album revolves around the theme of sad events in her life, marriage breaking apart) than TUN or even Sweetener (which i really like because this is my aesthetic graal, i am stuck at nude colors era and forever will be. God, even Taylors albums seem more nieche now and she doesn't have as big songs as her 'i knew you were trouble' or 'wildest dreams', 'blank space'.

These things can still find audiences (sometimes more then ever), but it's much easier to not hear about or engage with things if you don't want. Pop girlies like Tate, Olivia, and Sabrina are still developing their styles and their voices are still maturing. I feel we need to give these girls so more time. Tate is actually a decent lyricist as well as Oliva. Plus, they are all very young and some have experienced less in life than others. Life experiences influences music heavily so give em a min. We must also recognize that music has changed. We see the changes in rap, and RnB, and now we see it in pop. We cannot complain about a change that we as audience allowed to occur. If you believe this is half baked pop, then why stream and tune into half-baked pop. Even if it was just one song? we allowed this change so to complain about it is a no.

    • @destinimitchell268
      @destinimitchell268 6 місяців тому +274

      I would also like to add that many of these artists want to be more expressive and creative and we as consumers don't allow that. Every time an artist tries to evolve into a new style or get deeper with their lyrics or try a new concept etc. the public rejects it immediately, simply because it's not what we are used to. We as consumers limit our artist then complain about it as if they aren't going back in the studio and cooking up something generic because their personal creative piece wasn't received well by the confused and judgmental. We need to allow artist to venture in different genres and creative outlets. This could probably easy the issues we have with music today.

    first of all, THANK YOU for mentioning Shakira in the 2000s pop music section! for some reason most americans don't really include her in these sort of conversations when she literally opened doors for non-english speakers to have mainstream success in the states. i feel like she's one of those people who you at least know their name, which is extremely impressive considering most of her catalog is in spanish.
    i feel like the biggest problem right now with pop music is the listeners who don't give anyone a chance to succeed. the biggest examples of this to me would be olivia and tate, cuz i vividly remember how much hate olivia got when drivers license first started to get big until she was successful enough for ppl to actually like her, same thing happening now with tate. i do agree tho that the music isn't comparable to what the girls were giving before the 2020s (except for sabrina, she easily would've been a main pop girl since 2018 if she didn't go from a terrible label to another)

At least, I don't recall any notable artists with her sound before she blew up. Generally, her songwriting is incredibly mature. Her lyrics are often very profound and feel geniune, and the production of her songs is immaculate. Especially on that first album, her storytelling and sound was so cohesive and well-developed. People shit on her vocals, but I think her softer delivery is very deliberate. It suits her music, it requires more control than people realize, and it's instantly recognizable. Not to mention, her aesthetics are also iconic. Her outfits and hair are distinct in the current pop landscape. She's a global star, with a shit ton of streams and radio hits. Old guys say that rock and roll is dead, when there are plenty of new bands out there trying to keep it alive, but they don't even wanna listen to this bands.

    I totally agree with Victoria Monet. I saw her live and i was starstruck. Not many of the new pop girls can sing and dance simultaneously. Victoria did that essentially throughout her entire show. Like literally signing while dancing. I was shook. Her album is varied in sound but cohesive and well put together. (Other albums lately just feel like a bunch of random songs thrown together). She has a jungle theme, retro theme, and brown color aesthetic going on. I seriously can’t recommend her enough. I’m glad she’s starting to get her flowers now. To me dancing is such an important aspect of music/performance that reminds me of the greats like Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson. The funniest thing is… this trend has happened in EVERY decade to some extent. There have always been artists of the moment, and legacy artists. Songs in the 50s were under three minutes (in some cases even under 2 minutes) and singles were always the focus. Until artists could provide enough value to bring an album (and cause the medium was the literal album).
    And another consistency is, labels or companies that invested in artist development (Atlantic, Motown, Interscope), always trumped the other labels and artists of their time.
    Great video 💖

    I think there's a resurgence of artist loyalty. When i was in elementary school you had to buy a whole album to hear a song you wanted to own, so usually if you liked it you'd keep buying the same artist. (I have everything hilary duff ever did ) but when i was in middle school to high school digital music became a thing and you could just buy one song. Artists had to try to compete to be that *one song* you'd buy. Then streaming made it so they'd get *one song* on a playlist.
    The newer generation seems to be ready for artist loyalty again. I mean theyre bringing back physical records, they want cds. They want genuine people who release good music consistently.

    This video made me realize how many of the old stars are still around and dominating pop whereas in the 2000s, I feel like we got a lot of the "fresh" musicians making it big. Taylor Swift and Beyoncé have been around for 20 years and don't let up. And despite some of the newer ones like Olivia Rodrigo and Doja Cat being more popular, none of them have grabbed society by the throat yet. I'm curious how it's going to be by 2030

  • @W4TSKY
    @W4TSKY 6 місяців тому +110

    I’m glad you mentioned the artist development part of this. Since FOREVER, a label (A&R) would discover a new artist and then develop them for years behind the scenes until they were finally ready to be released to the world. That’s why people could perform well out the gate and usually already had their own “sound” even on a debut album. Because they spent years finding and developing it, usually with the help of some great producers.
    Nowadays a label does that and the artist is called an industry plant. If you didn’t go straight from TikTok, IG or UA-cam to the stage, then you’re not “authentic enough.” And it results in a bunch of one hit wonders and fads that fizzle out quickly rather than artists with any kind of artistic identity and staying power.

    • @CamrynSuzanne
      @CamrynSuzanne  6 місяців тому +22

      Right like there’s so many people becoming musicians by happenstance or because “ why not?”. The intentionality is not there anymore. Labels aren’t putting money into artists. The artist themselves don’t care enough they just wanna make a check :/ I think that’s a huge part of the equation as to why things feel flat or underwhelming, because some of these people just aren’t ready to be on the stages they’re on, and they need to be polished a bit more to be considered a popstar at least

    • @officialmusictree
      @officialmusictree 6 місяців тому +6

      Major labels stopped developing artists in the late 80s/early 90s because artists don't make money, songs do. Push the song / mention the artist. This isn't anything new, and for many reasons they had to make the shift. Some artists with strong fan bases manage to take advantage of this, to their benefit, while others who don't know any better sign their life away, thinking they've "made it", are left to hopefully churn enough profitable products to stay alive, if they are allowed to release anything at all. As long as the "major market" exists, we'll continue down this path. Eventually, the best of the best rise to the top, we find them one way or another, and so the process continues....

    I also could not disagree more with the idea that pop is dead. Taylor Swift is an example of a pop act who has not just excelled this year, she drove pop, singlehandedly, to the biggest year ever. The difference you are discussing here is ageism and the idea that new young stars have to be here to keep the genre alive. It's not true, I think streaming has opened the doors for older artists to have much longer runs at it than they used to.

    I don't think pop music is dying, I think that pop music and the pop imagery is shifting and I wanna point out 2 things:
    1. What really is pop music? It's hard to tell because the nuances that make pop music a genre change about every 8 years or so. Think Beyoncé, I REALLY don't think that Dangerously In Love could be considered a pure pop album, and that goes to many many albums from that era, but because R&B was so popular at the time, it became pop
    2. And now, for me, we're seeing the same thing happening again, the change. After the "R&B pop", we had that 2006 - 2014? period era of synth, bubblegum pop songs with artists like Kesha, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga defining the genre and becoming divas, but I think the idea of crazy divas with extra costumes and maximalistic songs isn't so appealing to the public anymore (specially the younger generation, that I think is the generation that consumes pop music and culture the most), and now we're having a more chill, laid back pop music, even sad honestly, that talks more about feelings and love than party and that kind of stuff and the public is finding more appealing.
    everyone should check out some underground artists tho, there are some divas and hyperpop artist that give the pop you'll are asking for

Tate and Sabrina and all the other young people are changing the game, not the actual genre. The 2010’s are over people we have to embrace that. Music is changing all around and it’s so hard to come out in top, like how you have to prepare for who’s releasing next and what other people came up with, instead of embracing yourself. It’s so hard to be an artist now because the public just relates you back to the greats like how some people are relating Tate to Shakira. It’s crazy and we have to expect that’s it’s changing. Ari is changing, she’s not who she used to be, she has a new grasp on who she wants to be and what she wants to do.

Personally, I think people love her and dislike the new rising stars (Olivia, Tate, Sabrinae, Tyla etc) because maybe they grew up with her and saw her improve. Also I think its because these new artists trust Tik Tok a lot to promote their work and dont have or dont know any other ways to promote their work. Lastly, I think people these days just throw raw products and beautiful albums.

      Yeah, I’m an ari stan. And yes, her scandals kind of overshadow sometimes but I don’t think she’s that bad of a person🥲🥲🥲 Maybe I’m delusional. I also remember hearing Ari on the radio for the first time, actually, I heard her music before victorious got popular and I witnessed her growth. I truly do think that’s why I connect with her so much so you’re definitely right about that.
      Yeah, I think a lot of new artist are stuck in the TikTok frame of mind but in their defense that’s what’s working at least short term . they’ll probably realize long-term that it’s not as beneficial as they may think because there’s audiences outside of TikTok. Other demographics, who don’t use TikTok, and in order to be a mega star, you have to reach everyone, young and old, and everybody kinda Hass to buy in.. and that’s just not happening

      @@JiafeiProducts6969after everything she faced i want her to never come-back. She was abused to the core of her soul i'm sure she lost her passion for music

      @@briannaaudain928girl you’re always under comments acting delusional. you probably see things differently, but you might come off as rude. it’s true that ariana clearly has been associated with ´scandals’ lately - and the media did what they do the best: twist the knife and emphasize rumours 😁
