It sounds dated just because of the 80s synth and drum sounds. The arrangement itself is more "mature" with pretty clear jazz fusion influences. Play it on a real horn section, use more modern sounds for the drums and synth and this wouldn't sound dated at all.

If you listen carefully, you'll discover that the sound is back with only less punch because the record labels are engaged in this 'loudness war' and as a result the songs are losing its punch.
