- Part 30! 1968 Kustom VW Full Custom Ian Roussel Class Is In Session 🤓
Ian Roussel Fabricates Running Boards for his Kustom VW Bug.
Ian Roussel continues his sculpture of a kustom 1968 Volkswagen Bug.
Car Stands By www.etamfg.com/
"Car Building Is Fun! Lets keep it that way."~ Ian Roussel
Ian worked and studied at a bronze casting foundry as a young man, where he learned to create models, armatures, molds and finished sculptural artwork in all mediums and finishes. Ian is fascinated by the artistic process of sculpture. He brings this knowledge to his car customizations, to his TV show audience, and now he brings it to you, his growing UA-cam audience.
The backstory...
Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date.

I can't believe it, you are the biggest inspiration for me and for many people around the world, I am a small designer, form brazil and mechanic specializing in air cooled and I really admire your genius head, fantastic and unique ideas for air cooled
Thanks YOU
This has quickly become my favourite UA-cam channel. Between Ian's skills, humour, the mix of projects and the interactions with Jamie new videos can’t come fast enough. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, it's so interesting fun & relaxing to watch..
Can't stop watching my self excellent
Same here.
Mine to and they just keep getting better. 😊
I think this is why Ian is Sooo popular. He's got the shade-tree roots we all have, but has the mad skillz we all wish we had. kudos to the mad welder/builder/back yard engineer!
you mean i don't have those mad skills?🤔
Ian is the only person i get giving a tutorial, everyone else just goes through the motions. Explaining having a feel for machinery and tools also prevents a lot of injuries by knowing how each action needs a reaction.👍
I luv to see Ian grin when he talks about his old tools. That’s what makes it “ Old School” for me.
loving your 'estimate twice, cut once' attitude 😀
Great to see analog tools like a wooden yardstick, in everyday use!
This is the best car series. I've been saying for years, "I wish there was a series just showing the build, that was 20 hours instead of 1 or 2 and that didn't have bullshit." This is exactly that! Thank you! If you set up a Patreon account, I'd be happy to subscribe!
Hubble Bubble oil and sludgle , removal ..... Wizard Ian is a conjuring. I'm waiting for mops and buckets to start dancing around with pistons, con rods and valve stems .... 😂😂... Really digging the running boards 👍
Ian is a lot like many of us who improvise and make do with what we can and not necessarily how a textbook might instruct. I enjoy these casual visits into a workshop, as if I'm just a visitor who dropped by to just chat and watch. There are few makeover shows like this anymore that go into slow detail to show step by step how to fabricate. Instead of hours of slowly fabricating, other shows will condense this into just a one-hour show from start to finish.
That long bar with the steel wheels on it is called a Johnson Bar. We used to use them all the time moving heavy equipment. 👍👍
The bug is looking great.
Nice Johnson!
@@chrismarr2663 Big Johnson
That's why it stays outside
Steam train engines also have a “Johnson Bar” for adjusting steam piston cycles I believe
@@edfranklin2 I love Steam Trains, it amazes me how all that iron-ore was mined from the ground and turned into a machine like them..
this is going to be the best looking VW that I have ever seen.
Another great lesson while watching Ian perform his magic making those running boards. 👍
Thank you so much!! You and your wife rock it!! And I am grateful for ALL the content!!
I never want your videos to end... ! I have been finding my projects are better and more fun adopting your methods. The envisioning tool is one pivotal technique to fast track a concept. Going fast and loose is so much more fun too!
Love this build, the progress is a massive transformation with the fender/running board combo.
The HORN SOUND on the trolley jack was a perfect audio envisaged edit tool!
😂🎉❤😊
Glad you like them!
🟥 That looong Handel device is called a Johnson Bar. Yep
Another great update camera work is right in the thick of it nice one from an Irish fan.
Ian looks like home their is a methad so I hear my shop same way excellent guys 😊
Running board looks great! I've been picturing how sweet it was going to look with it tied in. I've been a sheet metal worker for 34 years and I was thinking when you traced where the rear fender came down that I would have just cut it a inch and a half longer and bent it up inside the fender and riveted it to the fender. There for the bracket you made would have been part of the whole thing. But it works either way lol Love it I can picture the finish look and it's going to be sweet
Ian's the Bob Ross of body work..
The tool you pulled out to lower the car is called a J- bar. It's purpose was used for cases in grocery stores to lift and bump them in place it was also used to pick up gondolas those are the stands of shelving that groceries are placed on we to put rollers under them to move them out of the way to lay tile in the stores This way you don't
have to unload them. Pretty cool tool and now it's job has changed to lift cars up to get the jack out.nice running boards Take care.
Ian the best thing I can say as an Old school bodyman is the way you break down and explain in easy terms . I can do the work after watching you but it's Great how you explain where most people understand.
Btw I love the bug. Reminds me of my first attempt at bondo in the 80s
Utter Fail 😂😂😂😂
I love your work. That running board is like Lebowski's rug. It really ties it all together, man.
Your little tool that came with the property is called a Johnson bar. Riggers, fitters, boilermakers use them to move heavy objects. It all about the leverage.
As usual, you take a pile of envisioning…
Ooooht wala… Looking pretty awesome guys….!!!
Running board asceticism truly a swift adventure..good job
Ian and Joanie you have a Masterpiece 👏👍❤️
Who is Joanie?
@@luebkeb Jamie said once she wanted to be Joanie from Happy Days while growing up..
Ian and Jamie Really looks good Coming along well and Nice jack Stands
I agree with you 100% your workbench looks like my coffee table and I know exactly where everything is in my cluttered up mess
The more you do, the better it looks! It will definitely be a cool custom when you're done 👍👍
Such a privilege that you share your creative process with us ...
And all the old hand tools that you treasure...
You both have such a way of presenting the actual creation of art that I can enjoy...🤙🤙👽👽🛸🛸🇳🇿🇳🇿🙂🙂
Those stands are excellent 😊
Glad you like them!
@@fullcustomIan excellent guys cheers 🥂 evolving night
You two are great
I gotta say , that is looking SWEET !!!!!! 😊 that anvil is history just because of where it came from !!!! Awesome 😮
Great progress, working on different cars keeps it interesting. Thanks for bringing us along.
looking better every time Ian Awesome
I am blown away by all your projects. The work you do is amazing. In the late 60’s and 70’s we used to tear it up down on the desert. We had a second home in a little town called Wrightwood. Skied in the winter and ripped it up on the desert in the summertime. I could tell you some stories. Well keep on keeping the dream alive.
Love it! The desert is a very special place.
Love those jack stands. So badass
Running boards are looking awesome 😎👍
Thanks 👍
A little tip that might help with the fiberglass body filler...add a little paint reducer to your mix, it will help smooth it out and make it easier to spread.
Like it with the running boards still want to see you do the door to open lol
Definitely the coolest shop teacher ever.
I’ve proven repeatedly that I can’t do even the most basic woodworking. I want to try my hand at some basic metal work. Just because. You do a great job of showing and explaining the whys as you go. It makes me think if I put the time and effort into it, I can make what I want.
Floor boards Yes! Love it! Good stuff!!
Man this is looking so cool, very 60’s retro look with the German helmet top and fenders. Reminds me of an old Revell model !
My CDO was crying out to me with that rear fender strap. The fender is so smooth and pretty, i was hoping that strap would be on the underside of the running board with hardware on the tire side of the fender. Like a 53-56 Ford pickup.
I'm anticipating the door opening process. So fun to follow along at home. Your building of stuff is like watching a calm Bob Ross painting come together.
I'm with you on the door. Is this an oversight? How will it open? 6:57
Loving the Volkswagen hot rod project. Awesome 👌
Glad you like it!
Hey guys, gotta say that although you are so busy, you still find time to share your awesomeness with us all. And I can see why Jamie loves filming Ian so much. It’s like he’s giving birth everyday.
So far, love the bread truck.
Ian is the man! Again, another great video! I only wish I lived closer to you. Plus the place that you are at looks amazing. Thank you once again for the hours of entertainment and the tips and tricks I pick up every time I watch you. I own a Hot Rod version of the 1966 Batmobile. It's sitting on a 1977 Lincoln Continental frame and power plant. The motor is tired and needs updating. Man do I wish I could get you to do your magic on it so I could use it more than I do now. For now I'll dream but hopefully some day I could have your expertise and talent recreate my car for me. Motor, Paint and body mods, especially the body mods!.
you are a natural Ian
all sorts of plans which always seem to work out…(in one way or another❗️) as you go along
a magician
Great going
it is coming together nicely…‼️
(and no NADA drawings ⁉️😳❗️)
🪖
Great video as always! The bug is coming right together!!
Big love for this VW Kustom ❤️, reminds me of: "32 Ford Lil" coffin showcar and The Demon 1970 Hotwheel based on same
I love the 30 style fenders. Very creative
LOVE IT GUYS. YOU GUY'S SHOULD PUT SUESIDE DOORS.
Very cool indeed
Im loving this project! I think you might have too many windows running down the side with those hearts. Id convert the back windows to the hearts on an angle mirroring each other.
I love watching everything you do here. The bug is looking great and the other projects are wonderful. Way to go both of you.
Liking the way the VW is coming along.
This thing is RAD. You definitely inspired me to create my first hotrod 💪🏽 Can’t wait to see what you do next🤙🏼
Awesome! Thank you!
I enjoy watching your fabrication. It's always cool to see were you end up. I have done some fabrication but mostly carpentry.
Carpentry is hard, uless it's getting painted, you can't hide your mistakes, i'm always taken back by perfect joins and dovetails etc...
That vdub is so old school cool 😎 it’s low and full of soul 👍👍
Ear muffs and glasses are pretty cool
They're called Eyemuffs, Ian & Jamie are the regional Distributor...Ian Roussels Custom Fabrication.
Just love watching you use the old tools and the improvised ones as well. True custom work !
I've always loved watching your work ! I'm absolutely "hooked" on your channel ! So exciting to see the your next creation ! God bless!
You guys make an awesome team!!!
I like this guy it’s a master fabricator I follow him since back from death 💀
The eyemuffs are great Ian. I purchased mine from Australia a few months back after seeing yours on here. Bug is coming along nicely.
I can not wait to see it complete!
Would still love to see the trike that Victor has running again. Bug is going to be sweet when done. Great work as always.
lookin sharp
Looks great with that step board
Love the jacks
How cool is that to soak the whole engine block - nice 👍👍
Thank you Ian and Jamie for another helpful and entertaining class always learn a lot from you videos ....the bug is coming along nice like the low and wide look ...I cant wait to see you do the doors ...I always liked a car with suicide doors and think it will definitely look awesome on this one...
Right hand drive COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Like it. Can't wait toget my garage finished. I done body work when I was lits younger. But old men can still get things done.
Nice!
We carried 2 of those wheeled pry bars, (aka Johnson bars) on board the C-130's. Used to move/ position cargo in the airplane. Rated at 2500 lbs...
Love the looks.
Looks really cool ,super fabrication skills 😊
Thanks again for the closeup camera shots.
You are welcome! I am learning! ~ Jamie
Beautiful view while you’re working
It really is!
VeeDubs are the cat's pajamas!
I really dig the unconventional mix of baja, hotrod and custom in your Beetle. For as wild and weird things might appear at this point, the finished product always turns out super cool upon completion.
Highly original and creative, highly skilled craftsman here folks. Seems a pretty decent feller too, I'd say.
I really enjoy watching you work! To my eye I feel like you will have to suicide the door to get a full swing even after you trim the bottom corner….
Not sure if Ian stated where he got those lift things he had under all four tires but those things were damn cool, for those of us who have garages that wouldn’t accommodate a traditional lift that definitely gets the vehicle up off the ground high enough and secure enough to get underneath it. I find sometimes while watching I’m like Jack Nicholson’s Joker “ those toys where does he get such wonderful toys” . The running boards look f’ing awesome on the car, they tied it together on those lifts but once Ian set the car on the ground Ian was right it looked even lower than it did before. Can’t wait to see the door issue tackled, and as always beauty job on the camera work Jamie.
That looks great 👍
Thank you for sharing. FAN-tastic.🛸👽👍
That is so cool what an amazing job you’re doing. I love it. You are the best Ian, the master at work. And thanks Jamie for all your wonderful camera work and your nice comments and , see on the next video! It’s kind of neat. Also when you haven’t seen all the videos yet, you can just automatically go to the next one it’s better than any movie !
Hi Ian , your shows are great, .. if you and your wife are ever in Perth ,Australia,.. we go and have a beer,👍
Like I said before love this car it just gets better and better every time you work on it
Its looking awesome 👌
Old school master fabrication
You can get an air over hydraulic ram for your engine hoist a little more than $100 at Harbor freight. Saves a lot of jacking around...
Hello Jamie and Ian I wish we had your wather. The finder turned out great and running board look good 👍
This is really becoming a favorite VW project. I hope younger guys are following you, otherwise this might become a lost art. Your creative techniques area amazing. I believe you go from one project to another so the creative juices don't get stale. Thanks for the great content. I may have said that before. 🤔
I'm sure they are, there's a lot of young people in the custom car scene..
Turned out really great. Match the left with the right. Perfect creation
Liking the running boards the bug is taking shape. I've only been to one Big Bug car show year's ago in Vallejo California fair grounds and I didn't know that you can build a kustom bug to look many different ways styles year's makes. There was so much to see it was hard to take in. I took a few picture's. I was driving my little 1968 4 door Toyota carona I built at the time I had it parked out side the show but I seen people checking out my ride. I didn't say anything I just know I must have did a good job by people checking out my little car.
Love ian. So likeable and you don,t say or have.question what he,s doing
Coming Along Nicely!
Very good. part 31 pleased ! 🙏🤩
thanks for the show, love it; ignore social media trolls
Saw those on your SEMA video. They look practical and simple but sturdy enough. The four legs add stability.
