  • Part 31! 1968 VW Radical Kustom 🤠 Ian Roussel Fabs A One Of A Kind VW Door Hinge System 👽 🛸
There are no rules in car customization, and if there was a rule it would be to go as far outside of the box as your fabrication skills can take you. Ian envisioned a simple and radical solution to this style of door opening. He walks himself and Jamie through the process, with pretty satisfying results. This is only the beginning. Come journey with Ian out of this world fully into the outer space of KUSTOMS. 🛸 🛸 🛸 🛸
"Car Building Is Fun! Lets keep it that way."~ Ian Roussel
    The backstory...
Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date.
Ian worked and studied at a bronze casting foundry as a young man, where he learned to create models, armatures, molds and finished sculptural artwork in all mediums and finishes. Ian is fascinated by the artistic process of sculpture. He brings this knowledge to his car customizations, to his TV show audience, and now he brings it to you, his growing UA-cam audience.

Ian, you could consider using a sing out chair (like from the navigation station) from a boat to make your seat swing out so you can set on it then swing into the car. It could mount inside on the b pillar area. Put a nice seat on it with a locking point so it will stay still while driving. Maybe even make it actuate with the door to swing you out while the door opens.

I've always imagined having a door open by coming out and hen up vertically,(like a minivan door but vertical, I guess) but I've never been handy enough or blessed with the means to build anything like that. much less figure out the math on how that would work. Watching Ian figure out how to do all the wrong things in allthe right ways is always cool. (or is that all the right things in all the wrong ways? I don't know... When you first put the combination fender running board on the passenger side I noticed the front part of the door was blocked. I thought great Ian how you going to get in the car? The window frame you built is way to small to Dukes of Hazard your way in, then I thought well I guess you could modify the door a bit to allow it open like normal, what I didn’t expect was what you came up with. That concept is bloody brilliant, I didn’t get it at first but once you mocked it up and then demonstrated your idea I thought how the hell did you come up with that idea and the more I think about it the more I like it. Now I really can’t wait to see it in action. As always great camera work and editing Jamie

How'd Ian, I really enjoy watching you guys work. While I was watching this, the Industrial Designer in me thought you might want to use the original VW door locks by swapping the left to right. Maybe cutting out the door skin where the handles fit and move them to the front......
A VW is one the cars I have not owned in my life. I'm Australian and started with and English, Hillman Imp, Valiant Pacer (kind of Dodge Dart) 4l Hemi six, I have owned it for 46 years an had the roof cut off in the 80s, 1948 Chev Fleetmaster, Canadian made Australian built, RX3 Mazda race car, Peugeot 504, 307 and Ford Falcon LPG ex taxi that did 1.2m kms, and many more. At the moment Citroen C5, the last of the Hydro dynamic suspension French freaks.
Keep up the good work and thankyou for all the entertainment.

That was amazing. You had me stunned there for a while. Just exactly what you were gonna do. It’s brilliant should make it so easy to get in the car . and I like the idea of having the door motorized that’s even better you sure are a master you must’ve learned for many years. Thank you Ian and Jamie for another great video. I love it. Can’t wait to see the next one. !

Was worried about you and the family. Especially due to the water issues you already had. Watching the California rain and flood issues from the 16th floor of my Toronto apartment. It may not be known to you, but eastern Canada is swallowed under a century record of 1.5 meters(4.92 feet) of total snow fall in just a couple of days. Crazy has a new level !

Have you considered using motorcycle fork tubes ( minus the springs ) for the slide movement. Already lubricated and sealed. Also look how a self closing door works on a cam mechanism, so that it has to turn as it goes out.

I would definitely by a Roussel designed shirt... but ONLY if it has glow in the dark smoke somehow.
