    Sir James Stuart was the first lord advocate of Scotland in 1692, and lived there, and Deacon Brodie was deacon of a trades guild ( Wrights and Masons ), also a highly skilled cabinet maker and an Edinburgh city councillor too. He was also a gambler, which he funded by becoming a housebreaker. He was sentenced to death, but escaped the gallows by fleeing to America. He is sometimes cast as the Scottish Jekyll and Hyde Loving these posts, keep up the fantastic work. Nothing like this up in the granite city, mores the pity.

    Riddle’s Close is very historical. For one thing, the great philosopher David Hume lived there (whose statue is elsewhere on the Royal mile). King James VI attended a royal banquet there in the late 1500s. One of the rooms has a painted beam ceiling similar to the one in the John Knox house. Some painted landscape panels from there are in the Museum of Scotland, and a Henry Duguid painting of the close is in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

    I'm loving your videos, thank you. At 3.01 you show us Lady Stair's Close, named after Elizabeth, Dowager Countess of Stair, the Writers Museum is her old house. Before her it was Lady Gray's Close after the original builders wife.

    I absolutely love this series! When we were in Edinburgh last year my goal was to go down every Close but once there found it a wee bit overwhelming. It’s so fun to revisit the closes we did explore and then to see all we missed! Thank you so much for zigzagging for our benefit!

    Two small ideas for some nice pictures :
    - from the top of Advocate's Close, you can align the entrance arch with the Scott Monument.
    - if you go down the first part of St Giles' Street, on your right hand side you will find "The News Steps"
    (as you said, car can go down so you didn't went in the video... and doesn't count as a close but I recommend having a look at it)

    Thank you for all of your work! My son and I visited Edinburgh last April. Before we left we watched several of your videos, researching places we wanted to visit. So grateful for your recommendations and tips. Have watched all of your videos since and have loved seeing the places we visited and learning more about the history. We can't wait for a return visit! I may have sayd this before, so if this a duplicate comment, please excuse my dodgy memory, ...Too bad my friend and I did not have the opportunity to explore the closes in 2015 as you have in these videos. I would very much like to explore the closes my next trip home. Slàinte.

    I agree with you Tony about the new with the old buildings, meh, not a fan. Had no idea Riddles Court was so big back there! Advocates looks nice at dark, have seen a lot of photos of that lantern lit at night. Completely agree about the door near The Thistle Room near Brodie’s, have a photo of that meself. Very interesting, the close videos!

    During Part 1 (I believe) that you went down Milne's Court/Close passing the Quaker's Meeting House, and came out onto a walkway over looking Princess Street (?). As you were panning the camera, I caught a glimpse of a store front on your right hand side, that had a Freemason's Square and Compass on a sign. Would you be willing to create a video of Freemasonry buildings/sites in Edinburgh? Please and thank you.

    Ok, so since you mentioned you had a kilt (I wasn't going to assume), which tartan is it?

    • @ClanBroonford
      @ClanBroonford  3 роки тому +1

      I have the Armstrong tartan Kilt. It was a gift from my parents for my 21st. However at some point I want to get a kilt that is the Hebridean Ice Tartan. That is the tartan I got married in.

    • @LiqdPT
      @LiqdPT 3 роки тому

      @@ClanBroonford I was looking through swatches at a kilt shop on Princes St and discovered Fraser Muted. Fraser Red was always a little bold for my taste, but I might just have to buy one in Fraser muted for when the occasion arises. (and yes, I totally should have worn a kilt for my second wedding, but I chickened out and don't really know where to get one in Seattle)
