Woodturning Yard Waste Into Functional Art
Вставка

- My neighbors tree drops these seed pods in my backyard every year. I decided I would try to make something with them instead of just throwing them in the waste bin. I used zebra wood for the end caps and part of the lid. The eye candy Komainu ultracolor shift pigment powder looks absolutely amazing combined with the superclear deep pour epoxy resin. I chose to use Waterlox original for the finish. I had a few firsts in this video. This was my first attempt at making segmented pieces to turn. Also, this is the first time I’ve made a lid for a piece. While overall I am happy with how this piece came out I am not thrilled with the lid. It feels good in the hand but just isn’t as pleasing to the eye. I may go back to this one and make some adjustments to the lid at a later date if something better comes to me. ( I left the tenon on the lid for this reason). I thought I had an original idea with this piece, but after further research I found Sprague woodturning had made a video a while back using these spiky seed pods as well. I’ve had mixed responses about this piece. Some people think it looks amazing and some say creepy. What do you think? Please let me know in the comments below. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a great day!
Special thanks to @GlennMartinPhotography for helping me out with setting up my new camera and giving me the quick and dirty rundown of the basics. Much appreciated mate!

Amazing work
I actually like how the handle looks! Very unique!
a question, what is this object for????
Браво! Фантастика!

If I was a genie, this is the container I would want to live in. I can't help but imagine ot as a lantern with light from within. Beautiful!
Flashback to childhood of finding those pods with bare feet. Very cool looking even if it is made with such an evil seed pod.
Anyone who says a Lego is worse has never stepped on a witches burr 😭
Meh my goat feet don't even feel them anymore. Barefoot unless I have to put shoes on. Growing up my gumball tree was one of my favorites to climb.
Sweet Gum balls from the sweet gum tree.
We call these sweet gum balls the legos of the south.
😂😂I feel your pain.
My husband was riding his bike to work (long time ago) and saw the road directly ahead was full of these. He looked back to see if he could go around, but a big truck was coming. He had no choice and rode right into them, there was no time to stop. His front wheel hit the patch and he went down.
Every inch of his uncovered body, and some that was covered, looked like he had been attacked by a pack of kittens.
I'd love to have this piece to give to him, he'd get a good laugh from it 😂
My toddler (3 almost 4 years old) and I recently found your channel. We love watching you as part of our wind down time and talking about the colors and shapes you use.
That is awesome. You just won the best comment I’ve received award. 🥇 Thank you for watching and I truly appreciate your support.
Scott
How is it that in so many woodworking videos the workshop is impeccably clean and tidy? The tools all look new, the surfaces unscratched and pristine. Am I the only woodworker who accidentally drills holes in his bench, spills glue and leaves tools scattered everywhere?
All I can say is I take pride in having a clean, organized workshop. Thanks for watching, I hope you have a great day.
Scott
Proper woodworkers clean up after themselves, after each session of working on their projects....not just when they're done with the entire project.
Well that turned out absolutely beautiful! There is nothing like watching a skilled master at his craft. Just a wonderful work of art.
Thank you. Much appreciated. I hope you have a great day
Scott
More than fancy tools, more than the experience and talent to use them, more than your creative imagination even, you have the patience of a saint. This is a priceless work of art.
Incredible!!!
Wow, thank you! It’s easy to have patience when it’s a hobby done for enjoyment. Might be a different story if I was trying to make money selling the things I make. Thank you very much for the kind comment. It’s much appreciated. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
You are welcome to come to my yard and take all of the sweetgum seed pods. You may even take the trees as well!
But the trees are so beautiful in the fall 🍁
I’ve never heard of them before, I’m pretty sure we don’t have them here 🇬🇧 I do love acorns, chestnuts, the little spinner seeds, pine cones, thistles…uniquely beautiful
Ps, thank you for telling me what they are 😁have a great day 😁🌸
Theyre beautiful until you try to walk barefoot in your front yard
@@davidmccloud6400 ooof! The thought of that 😫 Lego is evil, those …I have no words. I hate wearing shoes or socks so my very bendy feet are scrunched up protectively 😂
I've used those pods to fill holes in the driveway, but this is so beautiful that im going to show my dad. He works with a lot of wood crafting.
Thank you for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
I loved seeing your process, and your work is stunning! Would love to see this design as a lantern as well, all those shapes and colors lit from the inside would be awesome! Thank you so very much for creating and sharing - absolutely brilliant!
Thank you very much. I hope you have a wonderful day!
Scott
That color would make a beautiful bowl by itself. The way you made it is gorgeous. Masterful work
Thank you very much! Hope you have a wonderful day!
At first i was like "oh this is a fun DIY project anyone can do" then the man whipped out a resin PRESSURE COOKER. 🥴🥴🥴😂
Vacuum chamber. Really helpful when casting resin, and not outrageously expensive.
Excuse me Mr. S&L but I have to say this is one of my favorite pieces I've seen made before my eyes. I know it is not an urn but I've been searching for a urn for my father for a few years now and haven't been able to find anything I feel is worthy enough to call home for his ashes, but this my friend would be it - lid and all! (wink wink) My Daddio was a craftsman, a man who made everything and took pride in doing so and teaching his daughters to use the tools as well. I'm proud to be my dad's daughter who sat under cars or in the work shop alongside him learning anything and everything he would teach me. And feel like he would be happy in something of that caliber to find his eternal slumber in. Now that you have opened my eyes to this project I know what I am finally looking for. If only I knew how to make one myself, one day maybe I will have my own workshop and be able to make greater things than I do now.... THANK YOU. ✌💜🙃🙏
That’s awesome. I wish you the best of luck. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
That was EXACTLY my thought: if this existed six (6) years ago, I'd have bought one for each of my parents...utterly breathtaking 🥺💖
Have you also looked into Cremation Memorial Glass Art ? About 12 years ago I had about 1/2 teaspoonful of my mother’s ashes plus her 2 favorite colors of glass turned into a beautiful globe with a beautiful wood light box to hold it and shine light through it plus a small brass plaque attached. Each piece is given its own unique engraved identification. There’s a myriad of companies making unique Memorial Glass in multitudes of shapes & designs which can be lovely additions & keepsakes.
@@moonroxxit I adore your handle, 🎑 ... Yes, thank you I have seen this idea my sister actually has one for our father. I am still on the hunt for a finally place for him. I'm a daddy's girl I was saving for something beautiful & got into an accident so couldn't work which caused me to spend my savings. It is ok. He is on the shelf along my collection of crystals & gets to feel the sunrise in the mornings. There are so many amazing creations for final places for our loved ones these days. The creativity is endless, a friend of mine packed ashes into fireworks for her parents & released them on their wedding anniversary it was wonderful wo watch.
@@Monk-eeethat's what I want to do with my dad's ashes. He packed fireworks several times for the local display over the bay, so I'm sure he'd love to go up in one.
Such a unique and beautiful jar! I love the warm metallic look to it. This is the best use of sweet gum pods I've ever seen! Thank you for sharing your creative process.
Thank you for watching. Hope you have a great day
We had so many of these pods in our front yard. The brightest thing I could come up with was to spray paint them silver or gold and to glue a small bow at the top along with a loop of thread and use them as Christmas tree ornaments. What you have done here is absolutely brilliant!
That's a great idea!
@@rgporter1957 а что это? Какое- то растение?
Nothing like walking out in the backyard and stepping on a sharply pointed land mine. Nice to see something beautiful made from them, thank you.
I'm watching this in a zen state and living vicariously through you. ☮️
I love the uniqueness and beauty. I would also love to see lights or faux candle and see that pigment shine through. If there’s enough room.
Thanks! I will definitely try to add some lights in future projects to see how it looks. Hope you have a great day!
Scott
I was hoping the whole time he would put a light in it! I bet it would make beautiful patterns on the walls and ceiling at night.
So Beautiful! My Mom would absolutely want this. It reminds me of the when my sister was little and Mom would take us all over the neighborhood to find these in different yards so we could do Summer projects while out of school to keep us busy. We made all kids of things with them. WOW! If only we could have done something like this! Thank you for sharing your creativity with us!
Thank you for sharing. I hope you have a wonderful day!

This work confirms that you are a skilled craftsman, with your skillful hands you have breathed life into meaningless objects into highly valuable masterpieces. Wishing you more and more channel development
Thank you very much. Hope you have a great day.

This makes me Happy!! It's Beautiful!! I have been obsessed with these little pods for years, and still collect them every year also from my neighbor I use them in glass vases for decorations. Thank you for sharing
Thank you. Hope you have a great day.
Scott.
I haven't seen sweet gum balls in years! So wonderful and nostalgic!
I have literally thousands of these in my yard! I'm going to have to try this. Thank you.
Have fun! Thanks for watching. Hope you have a good day!

I’m supposed to be working. L O L. Normally I just let UA-cam kind of play and while the music was really great, I ended up dropping everything and watching this, probably with my mouth open the whole time. L O L so amazing. That is stunning and the whole process, it’s just super complicated, sort of blowing my mind. I’m an artist so I have an inkling of the amount of knowledge, skill, mastery that went into that. Also, very educational, even though I don’t think I’m going to take on Woodturning, but I do so many other things. There are a lot of procedural gems in there. I’ve always wanted to work with liquid glass. I do lapidary work so I’d like to explore that as an option for stabilizing some of the cool rocks we find in the skokomish river that have veins of soft, porous material, but are so incredibly colorful. I haven’t seen anybody make cabs out of these things, so that’s one of the things I’m getting ready to try. Anyway, I’m saving the video.
It's beautifully done. Love the way it turned out. That pigment for the resin is superb.
From the shape and size of the container it would make a very nice urn for cremation ashes.
I like it!
Thank you. Appreciate the kind comment. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
ohhhhh....brilliant idea ❤
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Absolutely Stunning! Absolutely Beautiful! Amazing Shop, Amazing Work! Avalon got it right, a True Skilled Master!
Thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
I remember I used to love these growing up in Tennessee, used to throw them at my brother. Miss em since I moved up north
Truly a piece of art. I was mesmerized watching the process.
Thank you so much. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Stunningly beautiful. Can't get over how beautiful this turned out to be!
Thank you very much!
Because these kind of videos are kind of predictable I normally skip parts of them by fast forwarding.
BUT not in this case. I enjoyed every second and it turned out spectacular. Outstanding!
And I appreciate that you don't talk and just let the way you do it speak for itself.
Thank you very much, I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
I can see this as a lamp base too! With a light inside! Beautiful work, I would love to learn the lathe one day!
Thank you very much you should go for it. It really is fun. Small tip is that you will likely spend more money on all the needed accessories than the lathe itself, so be prepared. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day.
Scott
Great use of the sweet gum pods! My neighbor has those trees as well. They are messy but the autumn colors are brilliant. Nice work
Thanks to the creator for the talent he gave you and to get us excited about this result!
Congratulations!

Stunning piece!! Was a joy to watch 😊
Thank you so much!
Thank you for such a wonderful video silent Jim Carrey!! You are wonderfully talented!! It came out amazingly beautiful and shiny ✨!!
Oh so lovely! Thank you for picking up the yard & making us art to refresh us. Susie🌞🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
Scott
I think this is stunningly beautiful!! My first thought was that it looked like an ancient jar, that was found in an Imperial Chinese tomb, filled with cinnabar.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. Hope you have a great day!

Never thought burrs could be so pretty!
I'm glad I watched the whole thing.
Love the color. The pods are great in the crock. Love it🎉👏🏻👍🏼😀
Some people call those gum balls. And some of us call them dingleberries.
We call them Witch burrs for protection spells.
Sweet gum balls from the sweet gum tree.
I just call them spikey balls
We call them sticker balls. Beautiful piece of art
Very beautiful! Who knew sweet gum balls could become art?!
I thought Lego was painful to step on, where in the world do those things grow I want a bucket of them to put on my stairs Home Alone style.
Do you put milk in before the cereal too you fiend?! 😂
They are called sweetgum balls. I don't know about the rest of the world; but we have them here in the south where I live. We even have a tree in our back yard. I used to love to roll them on the ground for the cats to play with.
@@McApplebees_does_not_exist in my neck of the woods they come off of liquid amber trees. And they are a nightmare to deal with. You never want to grow them anywhere where there might be elderly people walking on the sidewalk. Or even healthy young people. It's like stepping on a ball bearing with spikes
@@McApplebees_does_not_exist
Those are sweet gum balls, and they grow all over the American South, at the very least. Far north they go but they are native to this area for sure.
We've always called them monkey balls trees, and heaven help you if you ride a bike through a bunch of the green fallen ones, they'll end you in a ditch with raw knees.
One man's trash is another man's treasure and this is definitely a treasure of art it may not have been an original thought process still very unique very cool and very well appreciated.
The thought is one thing the action and ability to move upon that thought is what brings greatness into the world. Thank you sir for your video
Thank you very much, I appreciate it. I hope you have a great day.

Yard waste??!!! If you drill a hole in those pods and then hang them, spray paint them silver or gold, then put on Christmas ornament hangers you can decorate for the holidays or sell them at garage sales!!

I've never been a fan of sweet gum balls, but I would proudly display this beautiful piece in my house.
I believe, from looking at the comments, we all agree. You are on another talent and imagination level, that most of us only dream of reaching. But it’s super cool to watch you do your thing. Those are natures art and you and nature collided, beautifully. ✌🏻🤍🤞🏽
Thank you very much. I appreciate the kind words. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
@@squareandlevel Scott, if you want some crazy nature to work with you should look up Chestnut seed pods. We bought a house many years ago that had a Chestnut tree about 5 feet from our front porch. Over the years, it became a day of dread to go out and try to get them all up. I often wondered, why our government hadn’t devised a WMD made from them. They truly were that bad. Imagine, extremely sharp, brittle needles, all spaced out on a tiny ball, and so strong they would pierce the rubber on your shoes. It was miserable if you by chance got some of the needles stuck in your foot. The only way to remove them was either a really sticky tape or letting them work their way out. Neither of those solutions worked very well. Anyhow, just a suggestion. Lol. Thank you again for your beautiful art. ✌🏻
I like the color. Nice design with the wood too. The top was awesome too.
Thanks!
Wow! That is so beautiful! It looks like it was meant for that, rather than “trying to find a use”.
Oh my goodness!! that was just breath taking!!
Thanks!
That is exquisite. The red tone gives it such depth and contrast. Almost looks like it has a soft light inside. And the seed pods-it’s hard to beat the beauty of nature’s structural patterns.
Also…have to give props to that fantastic beard. 😆

Great piece! Very creative! I love the flow of your process and had no idea those giant wide blade tools were available!
Thanks Barry. I’ve found myself grabbing it more and more often. The negative rake on the cutter performs incredibly well on the resin. There are different shaped cutters that can be installed as well. I have them, but haven’t tried them yet. ( There’s a link in the description if you would like to check them out). Thanks again for watching as always my friend. Hope you have an excellent day sir.
