thank you austen for the jane remover placement! It's such an incredible album, and while anthony's score was positive, I thought it would be higher than Frailty
its crazy how I know a LOT of people who think its AOTY and just as many who put it in their bottom 10. I think its one of those records that you wont like unless you really understand it.
It's not for me but then I've never liked anything in the Post-Rock genre, I find it boring. That's not to say it isn't a good record though, just personal preference
I’m going to keep talking about Model/Actriz - Dogsbody until more people listen to it. It’s so damn good, just perfect noisy post-punk that never gives you a chance to breathe in the best way possible.
Great album but it already gets a ton of love on sites like rym and aoty and I think fantano wanted to give love to albums that aren’t appreciated anywhere
Went to one of their concerts in November and it was incredible too. One of the best I've ever been to and lived up to the deranged quality of the album.
Stuck mentioned! I found them through Bandcamp with their Content That Makes You Feel Good EP and have been a fan ever since. Sharp political writing, groovy songs and electrical vocals combining for some pretty great stuff, and Freak Frequency definitely shows their evolution.
personally i feel that TURQUOISEDEATH's "Se Bueno" is one of the most underrated of the year. The luscious and atmospheric textures of that record are incredible, defo the best electronic album of the year for me
Shits gas but if you didn't know a few of the songs are in fortnite on car radio, I lost my shit when I was listening to one of the tracks and it played the same one in game
I haven’t seen the new Afterbirth record mentioned anywhere which is surprising and saddening at the same time because that is some of the best proggy yet brutal Death Metal I’ve heard all year
Freak Frequency was honestly my favorite album to come out this year. Super chaotic and aggressive, really tight performances, super good lyrics. just all around fantastic.
I got to see bruiser in the fall when they came to play a very chill venue in Montreal, QC. I chose not to listen before I went, I just knew I would like them… and holy was I immediately blown away by the precision of this band. They’re so noisy but you still hear everything really clearly. Also you talked about chemistry, seeing the bassist and drummer lock eyes the entire show was the coolest musical interaction I’ve seen probably ever. They were like sucking each others souls out via eye contact. So dope.
I’d say the most underrated record this year was The Murder Capital’s “Gigi’s Recovery”. Beautiful post-punk record that takes ideas from bands like Interpol and puts a darker spin on them while still keeping it punchy and catchy. While there’s a lot of bangers on there, the darker moments of the record are truly haunting. Its themes of death and heartbreak and recovery as well also resonate with me pretty strongly. Great album that went massively underlooked due to being from a smaller band as well as being released in January.
Animal Collective - Isn't It Now? The Internet's Busiest Music Nerd interviewed the band, called Defeat one of the best songs of the year... and then never even gave the album a full review.
What about KNOWER?! Their latest record “KNOWER FOREVER” is brilliant! It’s so densely composed with virtuosic performances & yet I haven’t seen any music journalism outlet even acknowledge it
I feel the exact same way!!! I literally Ctrl+F'd the comments to see if anyone was mentioning them. It's crazy how much people are sleeping on this album
That was my favorite album last year by far and I think they were missed by a lot of folks as they "released" their album on bandcamp only for like a few months. So it's like oh hey it's out NOW! But it didn't show up on anyone's spotify, etc. until late in the year.
Longtime listener/watcher... Lemme preface- you've been putting me on to new music for years. Like a long time. Props for good taste and consistency. I'll keep watching until one of us retires. Flowers, you got em. Now with that said- THIS IS THE MELON IVE BEEN MISSING. All the weird, off kilter, left leaninn, mind bending sonic skullduggery ish that you used to put me and many onto is right here...and not in a "YUNO" segment. You have singlehandedly put me onto some of the most bizarre and innovative music that I still follow to this day...and I'm not just talking about Death Grips. I'd leave a list, but why? This isn't about me. This is about you putting us onto out of the box sonic brilliance. Now, I don't want to give you more work to do, but..can we have more honorable mentions say ...every month? Please? Keep up the good work.
Honestly I think Post-American by MSPAINT was an amazing project that deserves more love! I found them out thru your yunoreview segment earlier this year and they’re firmly in my top 10 albums this year. Something about that lead distorted bass and synth combo just sounds so good.
I can't seem to find it, but I remember on IG that Colin Stetson said that he was purposefully not promoting his new album much. I think it was a tribute to his father who died and he wanted to keep it small and personal. I'm a fan of his, and I had no idea he released an album until you reviewed it.
For me it’s Knower’s “Knower Forever”, seriously some of the best synth-funk of the decade. Those grooves seriously are insane. Like what even is “It’s All Nothing Until It’s Everything”??? Also the new Bickle record “Biblickle” is definitely one the better bedroom pop records I’ve heard in a while, and such an amazing personality on his songs. “The Suburbs” was definitely my song of the summer. Both get high 8/10s for me
grave robbing by leroy (also known as jane remover) really doesn’t get enough credit, partially because it’s not on streaming this thing is just so god damn fun
Just checked out the Bruiser and Bicycle album, amazing recommendation that scratches the freaky and progressive indie AnCo/Grizzly Bear style thing itch so well.
so much this, I absolutely got sucked punched by this record/artist when I first gave it a listen. just a supremely heavenly melancholic gorgeousness from the music to lyrics and all
I'm so glad to see Crawl getting some love. Crawl is everything that modern metal often gets criticized for not being - sincere, dark, daring, experimental, filthy, and most of all, HEAVY. It's truly extreme, one-of-a-kind music that has a lot to offer to open minded people. Also, I'm not sure if he's doing any live shows in the near future, but to anyone who has the opportunity to see him - DO IT. Legitimately my favorite live show I've ever seen.
Lido is never talked about for some reason but he’s always producing amazing tracks for others while reinventing himself on every album of his own. His last record (ULTRAVIOLET) blew me away.
Ultraviolet didn't stick with me, but definitely think Lido deserves more recognition. Peder definitely stands as one of my top full albums. Maybe I need to give Ultraviolet another chance
I’d add All hands_Make Light’s album Darling the Dawn to this. It has songwriting talents from Godspeed you! Black emperor’s Efrim Menuck and broken social scene’s Ariel Engle. Pretty solid front to back, I recommend.
Been waiting to see a single person on the internet talk about the new Peter Gabriel album. He’s an icon in progressive and art rock, it’s his first release in over 2 decades AND it’s great!
Glad you’re enjoying it, hopefully you can continue to enjoy it despite the fact that it isn’t getting the recognition from others that you think it deserves.
