    Josh, your dad was great in this video. He really executed the maneuvers as needed. What a team! I hope you cherish these moments... Wish you both continued success.

    Your dad's cockpit banter has improved leaps and bounds lately... running the checklists out loud, talking through his maneuvers out loud... you can tell he's been flying with you a lot, he's starting to sound just like you. :)

    Your validation was much much more an event than mine. I flew a wandering sightseeing tour inside KSRQ Class C, at one altitude, for thirty minutes, after taking off from KSRQ. Then landed at KSRQ. No special maneuvers. At home in five minutes got the incentive status and performance report. Completed the application for the rebate. Got check in mail less than 10 days.

    It has been 13 years since I last flew as PIC. Technology has changed for the better, certainly in terms of knowing the position of other aircraft. My father was flying the family C172 40 years ago with the writer, brother and a friend on board. Our plane was struck on top of the cabin by a bi-plane while on final approach. My father did as the instructor trained him "FLY THE PLANE." From our point, it sounded like being inside a just kicked metal trash can. The bi-plane pilot was unable to see us due to the blind spot before him as his nose was pitched slightly upward. Remarkably there was only minor damage to our cabin top shattered fiberglass antennae. I believe the ADS-B would have all but prevented this accident. Of course all of this only works if you have the equipment and turn it on. I hope to get back in the sky soon as a pilot using the new technology. This video was very informative and well prepared. Always cherish those flights with dad.

    I did my qualification flight inside class c airspace. I was a little surprised the ATC didn't know the rules. I had to brief him. I did get credit first time and the rebate was here in about 4 weeks

    And here I assumed that some tech with the FAA came up with the acronym for Altitude, Direction, Speed-Broadcast! Same thing actually....and 1 mile is a short final? That was a huge pattern for a Skyhawk.

    Should have been: The transition to ADS-B will be expensive for many aircraft owners, that is why the FAA is offering a $500 rebate on a $10,000+ (installed) mandated system. Funny; the old pilots have heard this from them before not very long ago 1990s when the mode C veils were added.
    At this point ADS-B is impractical and to expensive for a majority of GA planes.
    I really enjoy your videos, this is not in any way a comment on you. Just at the FAA for mandating such and expensive system with no way to control the manufacturers who can happily gouge you because you have to buy their product.

      Brian I install marine electronics as a part time job. The other side of the coin is what has happened to that industry where there is no regulation. So many folks are buying online that many manufactured have quit offering hands on training for installations like radar. Why? Because profit margins have reached a point that marine dealers don't care to sell, install or work on them.
      Just like a large boat it seems flying is expensive. My advice is to pay the price and be glad that the entire process is regulated enough folks still can still find someone to work on the units when they need it. And don't forget that someone has a job because of the aviation business.

    Watching your video has certainly made my day a bit better as I was supposed to do a solo cross country flight to KGON from KISP. I'm still a student pilot working on getting my PPL but these solos have been holding me back from moving on to the rest of my stage 3 training. I was really bummed out about, but hey what can we do, Mother Nature is nothing I have control over.

    • @thomaslevis4694
      @thomaslevis4694 7 років тому

      r3poman671 I'm actually in the same situation, but I'm preparing for my first dual cross country, and I also need more solo hours. It gets tough, but every pilot training for their PPL has to do it! What's the minnimum solo hours over there in the US? (I'm Canadian, over here it's 12 hours solo time.)

    • @r3poman671
      @r3poman671 7 років тому +1

      Thomas Levis They say a student can solo in as little as 15 hours and going to a certified 141 school, they did not want to take that risk as even 15 hours is still too early. It took me almost 6 or 7 lessons doing only pattern work to finally be able to get my landings down.

      I know I’m two years late but I’ll answer anyway, it’s the foreflight app on his iPad which is connected to the ADS-B receiver which alerts him that he’ll be shortly entering a runway, it alerts that he has entered a runway, which also gives him the runway length remaining (in feet) and it also alerts him of traffic, the position of the traffic relative to his position (i.e. 2 o’clock or whatever), how high above or below it is (or same altitude) and how far away it is. Think that covers the alerts, there’s so many more things the app does though.

      Did you get the results yet? Also, did you fly North/South and East/West over a fix? I think the flight test requires that. At least that's what I read. Installing the 345 on my Arrow next week. Curious what you paid for it? Did your 430 always have WAAS or was that something you upgraded?

  • @etdey

    Mike Pippen recommended that after we landed, pull off the runway and sit stationary for a couple of minutes to be sure that the transponder switched into ground mode and to be sure that its broadcasts in that mode were received. Incidentally, we flew our test flight close to where you did but at 5500' to so that we were above the class C.
