Bought an ‘86 with 100k miles in high school and drove it through college and beyond. Had over 330k miles on it when I got rid of it. Loved that car. The speed sensitive power steering was great.
Funny that your number was 330K. I've had a 92 and 98 that both went for that exact same number when I sold them.
I love the 1st generation Accord. To me, that is by far the best looking one, inside and out. I have an 84 CRX, so I'm a fan of old Hondas. That radio is definitely not factory but is period correct. Also, it's engine is transverse, not horizontally opposed (a Subaru or VW old Beetle engine is horizontally opposed)
Yea, I caught that too.
Tommy trying to be Doug with an annoying voice.
That front grill is iconic
My favorite Honda of all time. My dad had a 78 that was identical to that except an A/T. Also it had that’s exact same cassette deck, so if it wasn’t factory, it was a big coincidence. And he was wrong, the auto was there in the beginning, not early 80s. Weird transmission that you had to shift from 1 to 2.
The original Accord sealed beam headlights predate the use of halogen.
I currently drive a 10th gen 2020 EXL 2.0t Accord. My last Accord was a bought new 2006 EXL which lasted for 360,000 miles. I believe one thing that hasn’t changed for all of the generations of Accord is that if you properly keep them maintained you can pretty much guarantee yourself of getting 250,000 or more miles out of the vehicle. My son and I planned a trip in early May to the Honda Heritage Center in Marysville OH.
I got 353,000 miles on my 2008 Civic before trading it in. They are great cars.
I got the same year EXL that I was honestly thinking about selling due to the repairs I need to make but knowing yours lasted that many miles is making me reconsider
Good info. My 2005 Accord has 112,000. I would like to get 250,000.
What I don’t understand is how they made the 10th gen look so sharp and sporty looking for a few short years and then now the 11th gen looks nowhere near as good.
I agree. I get Ford Taurus vibes from the new front-end. 😢
Opposite for me. The 10th gen was straight up hideous. The 11th gen isn't as elegant as the 9th gen(The 2017 Accord Touring was perfection), but it still looks way better than 10th gen.
The 11th gen looks better you fool
umm the 11th one looks the best, get your eyes checked
@@panzer_TZ I agree. The 9th generation Accord looked very premium and had such nice wheels for a car let alone an Accord. The 10th very my head looked like a Malibu. The newest isn’t bad but now that they’ve taken away the fun options of the 10speed auto, theyre making it very boring. Maybe theyre trying to help the TLX.
Tommy!
Thank you so much for making a video of my childhood cars( 79, 86-89) The Accord community is impressed and proud of your amazing and skillful presentation, i am truly impressed. I am always impressed by your presentations but this time it struck home and I had to comment for my first time. I am a police officer and this video took me away from the tensions of the job and I appreciate you for that.
I now drive a 2002 Acura Types S.
Thank you so much!
TL or RSX Type S?
When I was a kid my parents had a 1980 Honda accord sedan, five speed manual. It was a wonderful car, compared to what else was available at the time. Even then it was considered pretty small but it had a lot of usable space.
I had a 79 Hatchback Accord.
Great car!
I always liked those 70’s/early 80’s Japanese cars. They were small and tin like, but had a character to them.
I will buy those cars over this new cars in a heart beat.
I have a five speed 04 coupe runs like a dream!
Thanks for the memories, Tommy. The first car I bought was a new 1980 Accord LX 5-speed. Kind of a copper color with gold interior. The clutch was feather light and the shifter was butter smooth. Lots of fun, especially coming from a '69 Bonneville! I'm 6'4" and I had plenty of room. Not very fast, but you know what they say about driving a slow car fast...
My first car exactly-loved that color!
I recall used late 70's Accords being owned by college friends in the 80's. I was always amazed at their smoothness and refinement compared to the smaller American cars at the time...Chevy Citation etc
I had new Gen 1 Accord. LOVED that thing!
It was absolutely bullet proof and I drove the crap out of it including auto crossing.
Wonderful car for the day.
Had an 88 2door manual, BOSE audio with beige leather seat-edition; blue turquoise color. Enjoyed it thru the college years!
The 1st gen Accord was part of the fleet used in chase scenes on CHiPs.
My Dad bought one of the first 77 Accord's in Puerto Rico and i loved that car. I had an 81 Civic then an 86 Accord hatchback, an 02 Accord SE and now slug along in a 14 Accord sport. Great cars all around.
Fun video to watch. I wish you would have mentioned the actual weight of the first gen vs. the newest model. Also, you mentioned the thin a-pillar in the first gen, the wider a-pillar may make the passengers safer in the event of a roll over, but it creates a pretty huge blindspot. My mom was hit, walking across a crosswalk, by a car making a lefthand turn, and I am sure she was in the blindspot created by the a-pillar.
You are exactly right, the late A-pillar is a huge blind spot.
1st gen Accord was such a great vehicle. My parents owned 3, over 200k on each. Simplistic, functional, and fun to drive with the manual transmission.
This video brings back my memory. I had a 79 Accord when I was high school senior in 1992. Mine was 1.8 but produced same 72hp. Loves it!
I dyno’d my 1980 1.8l accord 5-speed.
It made 40.2 peak hp to the ground, sae corrected on a dynojet
7:15 those “slots” at the bottom right of the instrument cluster was where you stuck the ignition key to reset the lights for the tire rotation, oil change…
First year of the 1.8l was 79.
This is a 76-78 model Accord with the 1.6.
Pretty light car.
Had a 78 and a 79.
Great cars.
One of the absolute best TFL car reviews ever... Lots of them go into boring/joking details...this was true to a review and amazing to see the comparison from the first through the latest generation! 🎉
Wow this brings back memories! My first car was an '84 Celica, my buddy's was this Accord. At 16-17 we had a pact to help each other with any work on our cars, so I did a lot of wrenching on this car. Both pretty reliable but sometimes the car just needs work. I do not miss that reverse opening hood.
Learned to drive in an 86 hatchback Accord pretty much like that one, Tobacco color, the first modern car in the days of the Datsuns and the Corollas, where the Mcpherson springs were all around the vehicle, the most logical dash cluster, and excellent all-around driving position and cristal clear outside view.
That door chime was pleasant! Unlike the the Ford chime that makes me want to drive off a bridge 😂
I love the 1989-1993 Honda Accord. It's the one I remember the most growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. I would see the 4th gen Honda Accord everywhere, some are still around today, but are rusted, and have loud exhaust sounds, they run, but roughly lol.
same, it was my first car
My 10th gen 2.0t Touring is amazing!
The 10th gen looks newer and more beautiful than the 11th gen. Don’t know what they were thinking. The front end looks like a 2024 Mustang made in china😅
As a Honda fan, (my very first car as a young man was a very old Accord), I greatly enjoyed this video.
However, I have to say that I think the current gen Accord is a step back from the prior generation in almost every way (except that there’s now a hybrid option). I feel like Honda didn’t prioritize this new American Accord as they have in the past, most likely because everyone is going for crossovers and SUVs now.
BTW, I also want to give Tommy a shout out. I’ve been watching this channel for years, and I can still remember the first videos Tommy were in. He’s really grown into his role as a video host/presenter. His first few vids weren’t always the best, but he’s great now, just as good as dear old dad.
I bought my 14 Accord LX new, and I’m essentially converted to Honda. Only got 37,200 miles on it because I worked for Hertz for a number of years and took rentals on trips. She’s been super dependable so far and less expensive to maintain than my old Buick Park Ave.
My first car was a 1980 Honda Accord 5-speed 4-door. It was already 10 years old by that time, and the clutch was really abused. I still love how that care looked and drove.
My first car was an '81 Accord LX. Seeing this video brings back so many memories. I probably didn't rev it as aggressively as I should have.
My dad still has his grandparents 1996 Accord and it only has 160,000 miles on it. It has the exact same interior as the 1994, but slightly different exterior. It didn't start breaking until 150,000 miles.
The original was perfect for 55mph speed limits. Was so fun.
Love this video. I've owned a 92' (5spd) and a 96' (auto V6) and can't help to regularly look at Accord listings. They're the most attractive mainstream sedans IMO-- incredible cars.
I’ve owned an 80, 99, 07, 12, 14 and 16 Accord. Didn’t love the styling of the 10G Accord but the 2.0T powertrain made up for it.
The 23 is the only one that has absolutely no appeal to me.
thanks for the walk back in time, very cool!
I had a 1979 and a 1980 Honda accord coupe and a 1979 Honda Prelude between 1992 and 1994. I just loved these cars, they were very practical, functional and economical. They were so pleasurable to drive and so easy to maintain and repair. If I'd find a good conditioned accord or even a civic of that era, I would love to buy it and keep it in my garage.
7:08 LOL that's not a computer. It's mechanical. Those are just geared to the odometer. The way you reset those maintenance timers is by inserting the key in one of the three little slots below. The plan view car graphic is various warning lights.
I was born in 2000, and from 1996-2004, my mom had a 1996 Honda Accord, then in 2004, my family had a 2004 Honda Odyssey, I drive that from 2015 with a learners permit, I got my license in it in 2016, and from 2016-2018, the Honda Odyssey was my first car. I currently driver a 2015 Toyota Camry. Also, my dad had a 2000 Nissan Maxima, then a 2007 Infiniti G35, which my brother used to drive, now my brother has a 2020 Honda Civic. My parents now has a Mercedes GLE and a Lexus RX. Anyway I have been around Asian car’s basically my whole life, especially, Hondas, I grew up with Hondas, with my mom having a 1996 Accord, and growing up with a 2004 Odyssey as the family hauler, I guess I jut’s prefer Asian cars, don’t get me wrong, I love American muscle cars and trucks too 😉. This is a pretty cool video, I love videos that show nearly every generation of a vehicle to show history. And ever time I see a older model especially in brand new condition, I get excited, especially older 80s and 90s Hondas and Toyotas.
I have a 2018 Touring and it is an amazing car with all the safety features of modern design and rides quietly and with the turbo engine plenty of power when necessary
Great and informative video Tommy! My mother had a blue 4 door 1983 and an 88 4 door LX with the pop up headlamps. then a teal 1992 ex. All beautiful cars in their simplicity and quality. The earlier Honda key chime is morse code for "H"!!
I could see someone daily driving those accords from the 1970's 80's and 90's today with Weather conditions permitting and still loving the drive and any repairs they might do it themselves but the newer ones, just call a tow truck and direct them to the dump. All you would really have to do on the older models is swap out the halogen bulbs for some quality HID replacements and your golden. Plus that Cassette player means that your friends and kids won't be messing with your stereo and constantly switching songs with apple or android car play. Also during the War Times ahead when the Internet gets restricted and shut down for Military Use only because of "Spying" Etc Cassettes and CD's will be a Must have again for those family trips and you will need the AM/FM radio to get News and Traffic Updates just like back in the 70's and 80's.
I love that you got the 1 million mile accord, and then got the 67 mile one too! d:
I'm considering the possibility of purchasing a late 90s Accord, AT of course. That's the best idea ever!
Ive had a 78,94,98,03,18 & now daily a 92 accord. the 78 was an amazing little car that got insane gas milage and had a weber conversion kit. the 92 is my favorite and out handles pretty much any car ive had. i set a 5 second faster autocross in my 92 accord than my 2000 miata. ive put 60k miles on it and just recently took a trip from Florida to maine and back with no hiccups. hoping to eventually have one of every generation as a collection
Wouldn't change my 9th Gen Honda Accord for no other Honda. They shouldn't have never discontinued the 3.5L🤦♂️
I'm three years older than Tommy's dad, Roman, and remember as a teen remember reading about the brand new 1976 Accord in a review by the late, great Dan Jedlicka, automotive columnist of the Chicago Sun-Times. I was totally smitten. I was still a year away from my driver's license but that's the car I wanted! Never did buy one of those first-gen Accords but sure enjoyed this look back in this video.
I had a 1993 Accord as my first car bought by my parents. I learned how to turn a wrench because of it. It was a blessing able to do my own maintenance. I only got rid of it due to the catalytic converter failing and it was very expensive. Fast forward , I got a 2010 Accord V6. It had VCM problems , but the piston ring recall fixed it. It was a very reliable and powerful vehicle. Then moved to a 2018 Accord 2.0T. Quick and responsive vehicle and had lots of fun with. Now I have an Acura MDX as I needed the extra space.
Well done. I loved seeing a first gen, great memories of what was a market busting design.
I test drove the last gen touring with the 2.0T and it was great. It’s really sad that Honda discontinued that model.
My dad had a 3rd generation Accord with a stick. Thanks so much for bringing back some memories Tommy. Really cool video.
Thanks for making the effort to go about acquiring and explaining the 1978 Honda Accord's history and specifications. In the 80s, metropolitan area roads were beset by congestion for no more than two hours in the morning and evening, yet the Honda Accord, has either deliberately or passively, evolved to accomodate drivers to potentially sit in idle traffic for up to 20 minutes or more thru out the course of the day. .
I had a 1994 Accord coupe with manual transmission and absolutely loved it! Great in the snow and so reliable. Sold it and regretted it
I’m getting a motor with 150k miles installed on my 94 coupe ex
Had a 1981 and 1990 and loved both Accords. Switched to Acuras with 2003, 2013, 2017.
I loved this video. My 8th gen Accord V6 is still a joy to drive.
Would love to see this done with the Civic. My first car was a 1986 Civic DX hatchback in a sky blue color. I loved that car!!
Next car was a 1989 Accord LX (last year of the third gen) in a champagne color. Loved that one too. The Forth gen actually started in 1990.
It was just before my 30th birthday. I still remember the intense interest in this first Accord. Remember that at the time Cadillacs and such were nearly 20 feet long.
Fourth gen Accord is my all time favorite! Once in a while, I still see one on the road.
THANX ... A wonderful look at the past, my first car was a 82 2door Accord with the Honda-matic which felt very luxurious... THE GOOD OLD DAYS
I bought a ‘79 in the 90s for $20. The passenger door was wired shut and the radiator contained a rust colored gelatinous goo, but I drove that car for six months. I also had an ‘82 sedan, and an ‘86 LXi hatch. All great cars, fun to drive, and I loved the styling, interior, and ergonomics.
We Always had Honda Accord 1988 1992 2001 and 2005 Honda Accord been in our family for many years amazing cars 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I owned an 83 accord, it was the best car i could have at 20 years old. i now own a 2016 accord sport and am super happy with it.
Love the video, Tommy, great job. I have had a 2004 Honda Accord with the 5-speed manual for about 18 years now and she still drives great after 175K+ miles. Comfortable and the manual trans is still peppy and fun to drive. Honda makes great reliable vehicles.
That's probably the Peak of the Accord. There's a guy who just hit 1 million miles in one of those. After that they just started getting too heavy and not as reliable with garbage designs like VCM, turbos and CVT.
Thanks Tommy and Kase 👏👏👏...HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE ✌️
LOVE that ‘94/‘95 Coupe. WOW!!
The 70s Accord is pretty cool looking
Lmao - “So your kids can smoke!” 😂😂😂
Great video and very enjoyable for an owner of multiple Accords. And I’d always thought that “evolution” was the sole noun form of “evolve”, but learned “evolvement” is a legit alternative.
I have a 2102 6-6 coupe, and I love it! The V6 manual is the best combo and I'll never get rid of it
'Love the original Accord. When I worked in Bahrein in the mid 70s, Honda had just launched the Accord. The co. bought one as a co. car and I had the use of it during office hours. But not until I had swotted up the Driver's Manual. It was such a thick volume being in Arabic, English and French! I lived in rural England and my personal car was a '74 Citroen 2CV6. So the Accord was for me the height of luxury. First time I ever experienced airconditioning, 5-speed gearbox. Fantastic handling with light, direct steering. Wonderful car and a great delight.
Great walk through the past! Great cars!
The 4th gen and 6th gen accords no doubt are my favorite ones ever made. They seriously hit the classic.
Calling the CB7 Accord "boring", but saying the 94 has "stylish design", man this guy has to be taking the the piss. Don't think I've ever heard anyone prefer 94-97 over 90-93 before, the car lost all its charm then!
I remember in 92 my parents were looking at a gen 3 1988 accord and a gen 2 1988 camry. I wanted them to get that according so bad but they ended up getting the camry instead. I love that generation of the accord so much with its popup headlights
Had the 78' CVCC Accord. It was a fabulous vehicle. I loved driving all the time.
Wow that accord hatch 2 door my dad had one back in the day as a used car he bought it was a 1978 . He got it in the late 80s Great memories in that car good on gas at the time .
I'm an old guy and actually drove the original Accord which may have been one of the first cars to be sold with a "dealer markup " added to the MSRP!
Many years ago I got a 6 year old second hand Honda Accord EX 1600 sedan 1980, light blue with a spoiler on the trunk and some extra head lights (two round regular and below bumper 2 small rectangular "fog") . OK car that had a sporty feel for the time. Norwegian climate and rules and costs gave me 10 years with it before scrapping.
The First Gen Accord you have is actually the face lift version. My dad used to own an older version of it, with rear view mirror on the bonnet. But otherwise looked so similar! I loved the car btw!
I loved my 79 Accord Honda-matic. First car in 1990. My dad gifted me his. Tan over beige. It purred. Acceleration was fine. Handled well. Loved the well laid out dash. Coin box. It also has srsly weak doors. I had to slam the passenger one to shut it without rattling. My side flew open a few times. It threw a rod. Ate master cylinders. Went through two Honda Matics in 4 years. Honda had improvements to follow.
What a cool video! My first car was a hand me down 1978 Honda Civic station wagon in blue with a four-speed transmission. That car desperately needed a fifth gear but otherwise was indestructible. I found a 78 civic at the Peterson Auto Museum and I can’t believe I fit in that car. Smaller than a Mini by far. When I started going to college 25 miles away from home I traded the 1978 in on a 1982 Honda civic 1300 FE because it had a 5 speed for the highway. Fuel economy version got 48 mpg. On a dollar of gas a day I could get to college and back home. My mom bought a 1986 Honda Accord, the one with the pop-up headlights. She had that car 15 years. Extremely reliable. Had other Hondas over the years. All Accords. I still drive Hondas today. I have a clarity plug in hybrid and I love it. Probably keep my clarity for a while and I hope Honda comes out with another plug in hybrid. Anyway, cool video.
my favorite will always be that crisp pop up headlight accord. even the body shape was so crisp
I had a 92 accord 4 door sedan (4 cylinder) that went for 330K and I sold it for $850 and it was still running perfectly. Next car was a 98 coupe that also went for 330K and I sold it for $900 although the transmission was starting to go. My current car is a 2012 coupe with 243K and going strong. I'm a bit upset they stopped making the 2 door coupe though. I guess they felt it wasn't as profitable or something.
I miss the super low cowls of the earlier generations (3rd-5th) of Accord. Visibility was outstanding (and just look at the distance between the top of the tire to hood in a 90's era family sedan). Then the Europeans decided they needed pedestrian crash room between the hood and engine. Vehicle manufacturers weren't going to have separate designs because of the added cost and we got stuck with the higher cowls.
My first car was a 1980 Accord hatchback, bronze. Loved that car! One correction: you said that the engine is horizontally opposed-that’s Subaru-these were all inline 4’s.
My parents bought a 78 Accord LX 5 speed brand new in Jacksonville NC. Exactly the same as the one in this video. I had an 88 LX 4 Door 5 speed, a 92 4 Door EX 5 speed then a 2000 V6 EXL Coupe. My current daily driver is a 2011 Pilot.
I had a 2nd gen Civic (83 1300FE), which were very similar to these in a lot of ways. I miss it every day.
My parents had a 1980 Accord sedan - it was a 5 speed manual. I nice car, but the quality control was nothing compared to today. Also the car was tiny compared to an Accord from today. Also, probably smaller than a 2020 Civic.
Second generation Honda Odysseys are still around but when I see a 1994-1997, Honda Accord sedan, especially a 1996, in beige I get that nostalgic feel, that same kind of feeling I get when seeing a classic American muscle car, or and old school truck or some fancy sports car.
I has a accord the LX was really nice. Later a 81 prelude it had a beautiful interior i got lots of compliments from friends who rode in it. It had an engine oil cooler something not found on the later models.
… same as in Japanese imported ones. Analog controls are easy understanding and easy repair parts in the engine compartment under the hood. No confusing high technology features that could fail you in any time and costly repairs. No more do it yourself inside your own garage. Dealerships making good money.😢
Dad had a '77 Accord. One thing that you didn't cover... You could actually get a 4'x8' sheet of plywood about 5/8th of the way into the trunk. Very WIDE hatch opening.
You know what I kinda like the old Honda easy smooth get from point a to z.
The 3rd generation was a staple of my high school parking lot. Great cars
I'll tell what you the old Accords give you that the new one does NOT: EXCELLENT VISIBILTY.
1st gen looks amazing
The 3rd and, especially, 4th gens were my favorites; I wish the current accord was an evolution of the 4th gen design made up to date with modern electronics/technology.
This and Toyota really set the standard back then and put most American, especially compact cars to shame. This came out just a few years before I had my driving license. I do remember the Civic with that large rubber bumper around the rear window. My friend's sister had one probably around that time.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. My first car was a pewter grey 1990 Accord EX manual that I bought new on July 26, 1990. I was 16. While I liked the previous generation I didn't fit in the LXi and I just had to have a sunroof. I felt the 4th gen was a huge leap forward, too. One thing you got wrong, however, was the hp rating of the gen 3. Only the fuel injected LXi made 120 hp, the LX and DX still utilized a carb and produced 98 hp. I remember reading about the million mile Accord; I got rid of mine just shy of 300k. I wound up getting a 2007 EX-L V6 in 2007. Both were great cars though the nose heavier V6 understeered more than I liked. It also had a firmer ride. Wonderful cars Accords are.
My favorite Accord was my old 6th gen (2002) EX sedan. I had it for 16 years and it was super reliable. I sold it in 2021 with 196k when the repairs became too frequent and costly. A mechanic owns it now and I see it zipping around town occasionally. I do own a 9th gen (2013) EX and my daughter also had one until March of this year until she totaled it. At 82k mi, still looks and runs like new. Hoping to have it forever and would like to find another 9th gen. I'm not too excited about the 11th gen. I would prefer a naturally aspirated engine over a turbo and definitely don't want a Hybrid... I'll pass on that lithium battery. I prefer the styling of the 9th gen as well. That's just me.
My first car was a 78 Accord hatchback. Light blue with the 5 speed. This was in 1984. I loved that thing. I got rear ended and pushed into oncoming traffic. It didn't buff out... :-(
1:48 - Zackly, Tommy! I personally don’t understand the trend toward huge wheels and rubber-band-thin tires! As you pointed out, they’re a huge money sink if you hit a pothole, they reduce MPG, make the ride bumpier, and I don’t even see why people think they look better (I’d prefer to see more tire).
I learned to drive in a 1983 second gen 5 speed. 100 blazing horses. It was my parents “large” car. They also had a 280Z and Celica
