I don't think 100 hp is enough to drift well, I'd go for maybe 150-170. It's harder for a rookie to break the tires loose when the car lacks power, ofc, nothing over 170 but i think that's the sweet spot for a starter. It is for me at least.. And if you don't plan on using your car too much on the street a cheaper and beginner alternative to an lsd is to weld your diff(ofc, that only if you have a cheap car to beat it). 100 hp it's just a bit less imo
I drift a slow N/A fc rx7, one thing that is key for low torque/hp bois is tire pressure. Crank up that rear tire pressure, it makes a world of difference.

Initial D is more about the Touge than Drift. Sure, drifting is used in Touge Racing but it's not the main goal. Drifting started on the Touge, but then branched off into its own thing, while Touge Racing, which Initial D is focused on, is more along the lines of PPIHC, Goodwood FOS, and events like Hill Climbs, and Downhill Races. Even then it's just Hill Climbs, and Sprint Time Attacks.
@@mikeschaner5853 i know i dont need a break down of what it is but the counter to that is in fnf tokyo drift the last race was settled in a touge style anyways sp its like a vice versa to ur argument
Even though I still consider myself a Rookie drifter. I’d say one important tip that I can give out to other Rookies is to think of you and the car as one. Understand your car inside and out, and always know where your front wheels are pointing. May sound Corny, but it definitely helped me with Manji drifting, Inertia drifting and holding the correct angle on the corners. You’re in control of the car. The car isn’t in control of you.
Also, top tip, the lower the horsepower of car, the better you'll get as a driver. That's why AE86s have such a reputation, the low horsepower makes a lot of people underestimate it while the solid rear does a great job of putting down power for that horsepower level. As a result, AE86 drifters are forced to learn more delicate technique to keep it going and once you get there, it's an awesome sight to see.
Using left foot braking in tandams is a must to control your angle and speed, and when leading try to hold the widest position, and when following take a little tighter lines aim for the front fender but realistically don't get closer than your comfortable get, a racing Sim rig won't be the same of course but you'll get flow for things alot more quickly without paying for the machianical problems and tires.
Im 18 and learning to drift. The local track hosts drift days once a month and it's the best and cheapest way to learn. I get my tyres part worn and for free and fit them myself to some cheap rims I get second hand. Im in a 105hp (at fly) 92 mx5 that's my daily and with an open diff. When i started i kept spinning out however now ive really got the hang of it and am complimented when tandeming with cars with more than twice the HP. Everyone starts somewhere. Also id you need to use the handbrake to drift then you are doing it wrong. Skinnier tyres help more than anything. I started on 165s going slow and worked my way up from there. Throttle control is extremely important, i only use the brakes to initiate into a high speed corner. Best tip is to let go of the steering wheel when you feel the back step out on you, dont fight the car. Like alex said its a dance not a battle
I have a nb I got about a week ago with a 1.8 vvt I have been sliding it a bit and learning to let the wheel spin back through my hands trying not to fight the car I’m really interested in leading and progressing what should I do clutch kick e brake?
I decided I was gonna drift my shit box Nissan. First couple times was successful and the last time I did it I ditched it. Would still recommend, it was a fun time tho fairly dangerous for my cars shape
Sent into a fence last night smashed my taillight and right rear quarter panel.. same to bumper going in 180 into a snowbank if your gonna drift, get rwd learnt alot
As a drifting instructor this wasnt bad! Low power in theory is reliable. Maybe not motor wise but driveline wise it is pretty much 100% of the time. The only thing i dont agree with is the tire choice. I always say get the stickiest johnnies you can find up front ( i love the falken azenis 615k+) then in the rear there are a few tires out there that are great. Depending on where you are from it might be easier or harder to get certain tires. so federal 595 quality has dropped so bad in the passed year... its so disappointing. Kenda kaiser (kr20), hankook ventus v2 concept 2, ohtsu ( i think all) there are alot more. Those tires are great ( yes i just searched the entire fitment industry website)
Seat time, seat time, seat time. An angle kit and LS swap are not how you learn to drift. Get the following: Safety items Coilovers Maybe a proper seat Welded diff Hydro Lots of wheels. It's worth spending good money on quality fronts.
Definitely weld your diff with some good gears you’re not gonna daily a drift car because you’re constantly going to be breaking things and if you do daily it you must not be making much progress on the track
I would add a mistake I see is assuming you need a 240sz or a Z or an RX7 or some other import to be a drifty boy. I'd recommend considering cars with V8s from the 90s and early 2000s like Edge Mustangs and Camaro SS's. Having the extra torque to help you when learning throttle control can be really helpful. To something Alex said, think about what it is your tires are actually doing while drifting. When autocrossing, you generally want the widest & stickiest tires you can fit on your car, but you don't really want that with drifting. You start weight transfer with the brake and then maintain your drift using throttle control...having a thinner tire in the 205-255 range (depending on your car) means you can break and maintain loss of traction easier with less power and less braking force. I think a great starter car would be a 99-04 Mustang GT. These can be had cheap, parts are cheap, and the V8 mod motor makes plenty of power. Add some coil-overs, some new wheels with more appropriate offset than the stock wheels, and add an offroad X pipe for the noise enjoyment and you are ready to go and try out drifting.
This is what I did to an extent. Found a cheap 95 BMW e34 540i with a 6 speed trans. Gonna get some coils, find a spare diff to weld and she how she does. I have quite a bit of practice on assetto/forza so hopefully that helps when the track time comes.
It's because even tho cars like the 2000 mustang gt has the power, they dont have the chassis/steering/handling to make it not terrifying. Youll actually WANT control lmao
UnitiveWILLIAM24 I’m guessing you’ve never driven a lower Mustang with good tires. With some really basic modifications they can be made into excellent handling cars.
artsohc I have, but I didnt send it at all. I have 2 friends that had mustang GT's. A 2002 and 2007. They both crashed them going through turns and they were lowered and had good tires. I will say tho we were like 19 when it happened.
Yo props to the research on this video. I was expecting to hear the same thing from every other video about drifting, but you guys really went in depth and I appreciate that.
I'm no great drifter but the one thing I have experienced when drifting is that you have to be able to hear the car and it's reactions. I took a BRZ and a Cayman out and there was too little cabin sound in the Caymen for me to get it right. The BRZ was great and easy to get to grips with. I could easily drift it when I had more sensory input than the Caymen.
I have a crx (the non vtec one) running at around 170 maybe 180hp and its just fun to get out of a driveway and just pull the e brake a little and let the rear slide a bit even if you cant really drift with a ff drivetrain
He recommended the ATR sport tire. Ive had bad luck with 2 sets delaminating within a few laps. The ATR sport2 has worked much better. It is a completely different compound. For a few bucks more the Kenda KR20 is god tier.
Learn to drift on the street. I have a modded mx5 and its my daily I practice every so often when traffic isnt out but also be safe. When drifting house power isnt needed. One the best drifts u can learn is an inertial drift
Thanks for the video. I wanted to start drifting in my JZX100 that I recently bought. (Side note still waiting on that "so you want a JZX100 Mark 2 / Chaser" episode)
I’m fairly new to drifting but I run a e36 316i compact with a 2.8 swap I built. Most fun car I’ve ever drifted, 200hp, no hydro, stock lock.. just have fun, make friends and remember if your car breaks it’s all part of the journey 🤙🏻
Take it from a rookie at best, DONT go on your ONLY set of wheels!!! Bring a spare set to throw on the back, usually any cheap wheels can do, most people I know keep a set or 2 of stock wheels to drift on. Take my advice, ESPECIALLY if your not planning on trailering your car and you need to get it home!
Another mistake seen in drag racing is accidentally going in reverse. Tbh I have no idea how or why but it happens. Maybe the location of the reverse gear has something to do with it?
@@xenonprotogen3433 I don't know if all are this way but I drove a modern mustang where reverse (6-speed) was in the same position as first, but you had to push the gear stick down and then into first
This came out just in time! I'm finally bringing my revived G35 to get sideways. I've got street experience but nothing ever on the track and I'll be posting my shame on my channel haha. Keep up the good work guys!
I am drifting an almost stock (but with an upgraded turbo) Volvo 940 with radial tires. It’s a total beater and almost nothing sits the right way on the car, but it’s my car and I love it❤️
7:36 Same as skateboarding. You lose that edge by not practicing it. Sure like a bicycle you can never forget how to push around, but drifting is more like landing 360 flips back to back. You will lose that skill if you stop practicing it. Driving normally is like pushing around on a skateboard while drifting is like landing those sweet treflips.
Keep it stupid simple. All you really need is a welded diff or LSD and extra wheels and tires. Seat time is more important than having your car on jack stands waiting for parts you may not even be ready to experience ie angle kits or turbo kits.

1. Weld the diff 2. Stiff up the suspension 3. Get a hydro e-brake 4. Go shred Everything else doesn't matter when you're starting. Do donuts first, do 8 figures next and that's it. Seat time is everything and hp doesn't matter, if you feel like you're down on power, pump up the tires. Don't complicate your car because you'll need reliability, trust me, I'm just a random guy from the internet 😉
I learned pulling u-turns leaving gas pumps on wet days... Risk was so high I learned without ever over sending it. Then i moved to parking lots and wet surfaces became optional
My rookie mistake was not tighting everything down. My windshield fluid resivor tipped over and loosen my wire for my fan which cause me a lot of time on cooling down and figuring out why i kept over heating. I had a total of 3 hours of seat time. On my first drift event.

@@maxlewry7741 wouldn't count it u can say dk and reference anything + Initial D has referenced the word dk once and its only in the first stage
@@LKRG welp my bad

Depends. If your car is 2016 or older, it does whatever it wants.
More gas shows more ass. More angle for the dangle! More turn-in keeps the tires burnin!

Or 2.
Drive home on the rim. Send it
Using left foot braking in tandams is a must to control your angle and speed, and when leading try to hold the widest position, and when following take a little tighter lines aim for the front fender but realistically don't get closer than your comfortable get, a racing Sim rig won't be the same of course but you'll get flow for things alot more quickly without paying for the machianical problems and tires.
So funny, just started trying to drift and mighttttt have almost died a couple times. Video is right on time
Thats cool man, apart from almost dieing lol, what kind of car did you start with?
I decided I was gonna drift my shit box Nissan. First couple times was successful and the last time I did it I ditched it. Would still recommend, it was a fun time tho fairly dangerous for my cars shape
Same here lol my z has been too close to some of these curbs😂
Sent into a fence last night smashed my taillight and right rear quarter panel.. same to bumper going in 180 into a snowbank if your gonna drift, get rwd learnt alot
Got my stock miata with coilovers and an lsd, should be a good start, probably put a turbo in when I'm wanting for power
Shouldn’t need much more power in that little car be careful as the wheel base is super short easy to spin out rather then get a good drift
Get the following:
Safety items
Coilovers
Maybe a proper seat
Welded diff
Hydro
Lots of wheels. It's worth spending good money on quality fronts.
Do not weld your diff. Makes normal driving hell on earth.
Add some coil-overs, some new wheels with more appropriate offset than the stock wheels, and add an offroad X pipe for the noise enjoyment and you are ready to go and try out drifting.
artsohc and make sure it’s not a convertible unless you will get a full cage right away

Drifting: "Legendary mode on Halo 3" XD ...so is rally like Legendary on Halo 2 then? lmao

Take it from a rookie at best, DONT go on your ONLY set of wheels!!!
That looking a head quote applied to life too

1. Weld the diff
2. Stiff up the suspension
3. Get a hydro e-brake
4. Go shred
Everything else doesn't matter when you're starting. Do donuts first, do 8 figures next and that's it. Seat time is everything and hp doesn't matter, if you feel like you're down on power, pump up the tires. Don't complicate your car because you'll need reliability, trust me, I'm just a random guy from the internet 😉

Asetto corsa actually does a perfect rendition of what would happen for every single scenario a little while ago (yes i was a kid) i used to think nfs pro street had realistic world handling, then forza but asetto corsa just takes the cake, not unless we keep improving these simulating race/drift games there will be better games that can do rea llife and can simulate real life even going as far as simulating real tire rebound/ flat spots and so much more, which already exists with r/factor 2 but i havent played that so i cant really compare
