You’ll sometimes hear enthusiasts describe their car as a “driver’s car,” and it’s tempting to think that’s just an excuse for not having enough power. But what they mean is that the car lets you experience driving. A driver’s car doesn’t isolate you from the road, it amplifies your connection to it. It makes driving engaging. Greatness doesn’t happen by accident, and today we’re going to figure out how to engineer a car to give a great driving experience.

This is why the older Corollas are awesome.
Assisted steering
Sharp throttle response
Really light chassis
You can find a driver's car at the cheaper end of the market. Mostly because these new things that separate the driver from the road are expensive, much more in older cars.
Jump in an old hot hatch like a Suzuki Swift or VW Golf. No power steering. The throttle cable connects your foot directly to the engine. Manual transmission. Super lightweight.
I personally have a Suzuki Ignis Sport. The last model before they introduced stability control, hydraulic clutch or fly by wire. Fairly cheap when new. Super raw response in engine and chassis. Recaro seats. The solid rear axle hides nothing from the road beneath. 83kW ain't heaps, but it does what you tell it.
Being a S2k owner and the car almost at 20 years old getting in the seat every time it is such a blast wherever you go .

I have a 97 Fiesta MK4 and the amount of fun I have speeding to work every day I couldn't find it in any other modern car I've driven. It's no joke. Short wheelbase, cable accelerator, it's an oil eater that barely gives like 40 BHP, but it's a lot of fun.
Fun to drive a term often used by European journalists when driving some small Fords, like my Ford Fiesta, direct steering, smooth gear changes, a rigid body with little body roll and a free revving engine.
We need more driver's cars. When you're driving you shouldn't be doing anything else except maybe listening to music. Adding all these automated features to cars is making people into worse drivers.
It all went down hill after cell phones got rid of the keypad.
@@DB-oh5dx and most buttons. all we got left are the power and volume buttons.
They are indeed making people worse drivers, as they cause a skill decrement over time. We can even see it in regular old cruise control negatively impacting peoples ability to maintain a specific speed.
@@samuelneff2798 Self parking, Proximity sensors, "lane keep assist"? You mean your eyes? When you're driving you should be driving, it's not a mobile office, and it's definitely not a mobile makeup studio.
Also why do many cars weight 1.500kg or more yet brand them selfs light just for using an aluminum chassis or body panels, the jag f type and the audi r8 are best examples...
I had the joy of having a 2000 Mazda Miata and a 2010 Camaro SS in my garage at the same time when I was living in San Diego. I made many trips through the mountains between SD and Palm Springs with them, and I can't decide which was more fun, although the fun was had in different ways. The Miata was insane on the downhills, but ripping the uphills in the SS seriously got the adrenaline going. So I would say they both were driver's cars.
92 GMC Sierrra SLE single cab step side V6 4 speed with overdrive. No tac “ suggested shift light” long af shift stick and I drove it like it was a top end sports car. Best young drivers experience to me. Sold it for $500 and it’s still in town and running.
Mine is a ‘87 VW Golf GTI with a 16v 1.8L NA I have had since I was 13. Owned it 20 years now. Still a blast to drive
You forgot to mention the manual gearbox! The best one is the Mazda MX-5, followed by Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Lotus Elise & Exige and the BRZ/GT86. Lightness and responsiveness over power and speed.
I would take any of my old honda manual transmissions and put them into my MX-5 if I could. Miata trans is OK but doesn't respond well to fast shifting. I love driving the Miata more than the Hondas or Acuras but I'd take those transmissions in a heartbeat.

I think also a manual transmission is important for driver feedback and communication allowing you to potentially slip clutch a little on turns and very your revs etc. also 3000gt vr-4 my 99 vr-4 was just such a great drivers car in my opinion.
There's so much more to it than that too, I'm really surprised there was no talk of wheel placement. Having wheels on the corners of the car plays a big part too that's why MX5's and classic Mini's are so loved
that wheel placement basically ties back to the integrity of the chassis and feedback to the wheels. he's not going to talk about every single component because theres a million lol. everything else simply ties back to everything he mentioned in this video.
Tbf I drive a 2015 mini and it's also very responsive and feels like a real drivers car. Obviously it's a completely different ballgame now, but the car is a blast to drive even though it's a 9 second 0-60 because it's so sharp and quick to turn
A Mk7.5 VW GTI with front LSD and Golf R brakes. It actually rides nice for a small hot hatch and the manual transmission is smooth. Perfect street car. I came from a base model automatic Corvette too, and the GTI can be thrown around more confidently even with A/S tires lol. It gets even better once you replace the A/S tires with performance rubber and get a tune.
Golf 4 VR6 4Motion is definitly a driver's car. Pure driving experience is giving goosebumps
Balance is also important. A good weight distribution and of course RWD and even with moderate power you can go pretty fast and have a blast. E chassis Toyota’s are the best I have driven for nimble quick revvy fun
I got the Toyota 86; 255 RE-71R tires, clutch pack limited slip differential (crucial upgrade), custom coilovers and more, 2650lbs, it corners above 1g with 1.6g peaks, that's supercar statistics, so much fun to drive!

Miata is a really bad example of a convertible being heavier than a coupe. The Miata is designed to be a convertible first, so it doesn't have the same structural bracing issues as a car that is originally designed as a coupe and then changed to be a convertible, like the 350z. The ND miata is lighter than the FRS/BRZ
Then you tie in front and rear chassis rails, cage it, put chassis braces in and it weighs the same 🤷♂️🤦♂️🤣🤣

Yes yes yes. My 2002 Celica GTS 6spd manual is the best car I've ever owned and driven. 2010 r18 civic coupe. Light, slow, super great at handling, and gives you a good road feel even with the power steering. The manual transmission is indestructible and the car is great for double clutching and heal toe braking.
I know everybody talks trash about it and this brand enthusiast love it, but general speaking, one of the best cars I've driven is my Honda 98' Civic EK4 VTI Hatchback.
It only has 160hp stock on the crank but a better resonator and exhaust for the sound (no fart can) and suspension, makes this car better to drive than most new cars out there, including BMW and Mercedes.
It's just fun and responsive. 0-60 in 7/8s is slow compared to today standards but it's good enough for daily driving and touge driving.
Just love it!
My daily has hydraulic power steering, is short, nimble and light and has enough power to carv B-roads really well. And another benefit is that it is really cheap on fuel.
My weekend car is 50 years old, has manual steering, a surprisingly stiff chassis due to being a sports car of the day. But the biggest thing about this car is the subjective feel of driving it. I don't drive it hard, I cruise in it and it is a whole load of fun
The best driver's car, for me, is and always will be the Peugeot 205 Rallye, the 80's hot hatch with no radio stock, super lightweight, N/A engine, and one off the best chassi's ever made.

For me, the nest experience i've had, but had no idea how to explain it, was the 1st gen Audi TT 225 Quattro.
The was the seat held me inside of it was so tight that i could feel the whole car. Until that point i've never experienced anything like it. It felt when the car lost and gained grip, it felt when the body was bending in curves, it felt everything. That's the most control i had in a car and the safest i've ever felt driving. And those street performance tyres, it was glued to the road. Like, wow.
Plus, antilag was also pretty cool. Really fun to launch it. Almost 300HP, but, damn, it was fun.
At 5:51 can we all appreciate the actual endurance test that poor folding chair is going through right now
I think my MR2 Spyder is a good "drivers car" because it's basically a street legal go-kart as in it's a cornering machine. Out of the box they're fun if not very fast, but an engine swap or turbo turns it into a real force to be reckoned with in the twisties. The lightweight mid-engine design really inspires confidence and connects you with the road, smiles per gallon. I'd like to try other light cars to compare, consensus seems to be MR-S is better than Miatas but I'd like to compare it to other light bois maybe an S-14 or Toyota 86, or even better an Elise... just for fun.
With a manual rack swap and a few suspension upgrades; My 1986 slick-top Porsche 944 is the single most engaging car I've ever driven.
I can't tell about real driver's car like Porsche and shit but I understood what fun to ride meant the first time I passed a car driving this fox chassis Mustang when I was 19. I then owned a few Mazda (Protégé and 3). The Protége engine was torky as a rocket and its steering felt like a go kart. I now drive a Buick Verano and I enjoy it every single time I drive it. The engine is torky and quick, the steering is communicative and responsive and the drive is seamless, like a piece of satin. Good show, amazing car nerd. Thanks.
Slow car fast is definitely more fun than fast car fast. My 14 camaro ss was fun but I couldn’t push it in city limits without worrying about you know losing my license 😂
I love that I can rev out my 3.7 without going to jail
Eh my camaro is way more fun than my buddies brz but I also don’t live all that near to any city so maybe that has something to do with it
There's times in my car which is as low as practical in MA, 4 point roll bar and aggressively underbraced for rigidity along with prothane engine mounts, when I come running around a corner really enjoying the flat grippiness, listening to the rumble of a full custom exhaust. That's when there's a cop ahead in the distance and my heart races to check the speedometer. This is the point when I find out that the old Miata is only going 3-6mph over the limit. It gives you all the visceral sensations of speed without having to speeding enough to get a ticket.
Better to have power that you dont need than not enough power in something that you do need.
Works for other things other than cars too
@@daytonraught629 I’ve driven those brzs and they’re way too small for me to enjoy lol. I have a lowered c1500 stepside on baby billets. Total 90s truck. As you mentioned though, the manual steering is pretty brutal and has broken the fingers of two friends, lol

Lotus Elise checking in ♥️ one of the funnest chassis. I do believe the Miata is better for the money tho
Agreed. I love mine. And if you take the time and look around you can snag one for a lot lower price than what you may think. Plus diy maintenance and honestly it's not bad. Downside the insurance can range wildly.
I would say a seat in the center of mass helps. Think of the driving position of a vw bus or a 240z, you are not getting the best feedback with either.
I've never had a dull drive in my Miata. Put about 3k miles on it since I've had it this year and I can't describe how happy I am with it.
Underrated in my opinion is the Audi 80 B3 with the 1.8 full inj. System
I'm with you on the 911 GT3 RS with everything except the throttle and it is possible it was because of the automatic and they didn't want us to use the paddle shifters but the throttle was very unresponsive when trying to accelerate gradually. it went from light then jumped to mid and nothing again then boom full throttle so I'm guessing it was drive by wire which is always slower than a mechanical linkage unless you have a pedal booster. so I did get a pretty big disconnect from the engine but the steering and braking all felt awesome and very responsive.

It's quick on the throttle as long as you apply it just right. It's expensive and can be a chore to take care of but I love my car to death
The Cayman gt4 is probably the best amongst the modern driver's car
1.Is it nimble?
2.Does it has a relatively huge boot space?
3.Does it has a relatively flat torque curve?
4.Does it has a tire that useable during rains?
5.Does it not overpowered and not skid every few miles?
6.Is the spare part readily available?
7.Is there a lot of qualified mechanics for the car?
8.Is it not an enthusiast car?
9.Is it not featured in Initial D?
10.Does the car never appear on Jalopnik?
