You're the only one that actually holds the actual books to show us the sizes. Thanks mate. I looked through several videos till I found yours that made me decide on the book size I want. Appreciate it.
Glad that someone chose to talk about this in a video - especially mentioning professionalism in relation to self-publishing. There's some great advice that I wish had been around when I was starting out. When it comes to book size I prefer 5x8 as it seems to be the closest to industry standard; 6x9 can seem somewhat cumbersome. Great video!
No worries! I remember trying to find advice on this topic back when I was finishing up my book and there weren't any straight out videos I could find, so hopefully this does the job :)
Quick question sir? I have started writing a book, I am looking at around 200 to 250 pages @ 5x8 book size. How long should I expect it to take? 3 to 6 month, 6 to 12 month 1 to 2 years?
Hi Chris, you don’t have to write your own books to be a self publisher, it all really depends on what your goals are, if you want to make a lot of money monthly writing your own books is really slow to scale up and make good money, about “5 x 8” that size for a book is rather small, 6 x 9 is what most of the bestsellers in non fiction do, if you’re talking fiction then 5 x 8 will do let’s network, I’ll help you get started, email me at chasechevy585@gmail.com Names Chase nice to meet you 😊👍
Thanks for the tips. I think 5.5x8.5 or 5x8 would be a good size to go with. Though, it does depend on what you are writing, but that seems a reasonable size for a fiction novel.
For me, it depends on if it is paperback or hardback on size preference. I like my hardbacks to be bigger with the paperback being around 5x8. That is due to the fact I typically try to get both versions of books I like, paperbacks travel while hardback stay at home.
Excellent video, I've been debating book sizes for forever now. Sometimes I'll sit in front of my bookshelf comparing them all to imagine what mine will look like. I think 6 by 9 can be a bit big, but when I was a kid I read a bunch of pocket size Science fiction, so I'm nostalgic for the like 4.5 by 7. I'd shove them in my pockets so i could read at recess XD
Hi Author Alys Marchand, are you seeing more sales with Arial, 11 or 12 font, is this for non fiction? I keep hearing Georgia on everything is the way to go🤔 thanks brother
Finally someone told this! I am seeing everywhere 6 x 9 but I don't find it so aesthetically pleasing. 5,5 x 8,5 or 5 x 8 is cuter and cozier! Thank you so much!
Oldish video but I am struggling to wrap my head around the 12pt font thing is that whenever I have an MS formatted like that, it looks wildly off to what is on a published novel. 13 words av per line, 30 - 35 lines per page. When formatted 5x8 with 12pt it looks much bigger than the font that's in an actual published 5x8 book (holds average 12 words per line, 25 lines per page, 215 words per page, so only 2/3rd of a regular 5x8). Is the font in Name of the Wind actually 12pt? It looks like 8 or 9 in order to fit that many words (est 450) per page.
Just wondering if you can pick different styles of paper for your book? For example, glossy paper for a cookbook, old style yellowy paper for a novel or normal paper for a notepad? I wouldn't want to get a kdp notepad printed on glossy paper. I cant find any video on this.
Thank you so much for your explaination. Really help me alote. I am currently working on a book paste on inspiration and self development it contains only some chapters and iam a bit in comfused. Could you suggest me what i would choose and which font i should pick. I want don't want my book to bee tpk thin but all i can do now is to depend on space or font size as iam unable to go on any further
I have a poetic type of journal I'm writing, which means there are many sort and long messages that are all individual. But, I'm wondering if I need to double space for the sake allowing the reader to se it or if I can choose the best spacing so that the messages/poems doesn't go over in the next page as it interferes with the aesthetic of how I want it to be. Thoughts?
Hi, my first book that I published is the biggest size and it looks horrible, I really wish I'd done it smaller. However it looks like once one publishes it in certain size it cannot be changed. Is that true or is there some way how to republish it in smaller version?
Editedededed..ed Agree about the font, if it's too 'fancy' I can''t read it or I get a migraine, not even kidding. I like Lato the most, it's (according to the minimal research I've done on it at some point ages ago when writing my dissertation haha don't trust me that much) one of the easiest font on the eyes and natural movement of your eyes, so it's fast to read. Me likes it. I like 5x8 too (that's what she said..what?nothin.)
@ Wolfshot Publishing Fantastic Video ❤️👍👍 You said “Garamond 12 is the standard” but I know some friends that publish in non fiction and do Tahoma for everything, 1.5 spacing, size 12 and said that’s easiest for readers and on the eyes then another buddy of mine said “”no no bro it’s Georgia on everything, 1.5 spacing, size 12, then another non stop bestseller friend of mine recommends “Times new Roman on everything, 1.5 and 12 size”” what you think 🤔 cause if Garamond is the standard we could just download the kdp paperback Templates for all our non fiction books as they are formatted with Garamond ready to go ?
I've watched several videos on book sizing. I don't get it. Most all commercially distributed novels are about 4 1/8 x 6 7/8. Why is this never pointed out? Go to any book store with a tape measure and check for yourself. KDP allows for this custom size. I just published one through them, bought my own ISBN# and local bookstores are putting it on their shelves as a local author.
It can depend on the font, but generally size 14 and higher is considered "large print" which can be distracting for a lot of people, but is good for visually impaired 😊
I stopped your video within the first 12 seconds because of your immature, unprofessional use of vulgarity. Then I gave you a thumbs down. I can get the info I need elsewhere. Have a nice day!

I'm not to bothered by book sizes but what bugs me is when the book sizes changed halfway through it series like why!!!!!!!
I don't think I've ever seen that personally but I have heard of it happening. I don't know why you would hey
5.5 x 8.5 or 5 x 8 permits the most efficient use of letter size paper. 5 x 8 allows for a bit of trimming and a neat smooth edge.
Thanks for the tips. I think 5.5x8.5 or 5x8 would be a good size to go with. Though, it does depend on what you are writing, but that seems a reasonable size for a fiction novel.
Hahahah you had some mad struggle with "edited"
Great video as always :)
ALSO you're so so close to 1k ahhhhhhhhh!!!!
Yeah... I'm not sure what happened there. Brain fart is the expression I believe
Thanks homie, I KNOW! It's insane
Whatever size the hardback versions of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events, is PERFECT!
For me, it depends on if it is paperback or hardback on size preference. I like my hardbacks to be bigger with the paperback being around 5x8. That is due to the fact I typically try to get both versions of books I like, paperbacks travel while hardback stay at home.

Yeah exactly! I have so many good memories of pocket novels hahaha
Arial in between 11 and 12 is another neat font. No frills, clean.
I do prefer 6x9.

This is actually some solid advice.

Thank you for making this video very informative :D
Great advice and video. Wasn't fast on the talking. You displayed each size. Nice background and was nice. Good job
I like the smaller ones as well.
This video was so helpful thank you!
Worst part of indie publishing is formatting paperbacks. Amazon and CreateSpace wanna drive me insane lmao
Couldn’t agree more Kai 😂
This video helped me soo much. Thank you :)
Very informative. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks Jamar!
Great comments..VERY helpfull. Thank you..
I think I went overboard then. My document is 7x10 XD
Mine will be that size too. Did u change yours or did you go ahead with the 7x10
@@CRUDE360 I think I might keep it at 7×10 because I feel my story is too big for a small sized book 😅
@@cinthiacruzado2594 same. I'll do an unboxing vid on UA-cam when I get my 7x10 in the mail so you can see what it looks like 🙂
@@CRUDE360 Awesome! Can't wait!

My dad once said that books in box set would have tiny font size is that true or avrage?

Thanks Lila! Glad to be any help 😄
Thanks for a wonderful idea!
There's also the 7" x 10" book size. lol Too big?
you remind me of brendan brady from hollyoaks..
Maybe I should grow the moustache! hahaha. Thanks :D
Thanks!
Is font size 16 too big???
It can depend on the font, but generally size 14 and higher is considered "large print" which can be distracting for a lot of people, but is good for visually impaired 😊
Why can't a person just give information without acting like a jerk?
...uh what?
