Thank you for breaking down the confusion for me on the trim size for my book. It's amazing when asked what size trim did I want, I immediately explored UA-cam to get a better understanding. Thank you for this video.
Im almost done with the final draft of my book. So far the word count is 23415. I plan on going for a 8.5 sized book. How many pages would that be? Im hoping to get 100 or more pages AT LEAST. My books also a fantasy.
Please help! I'm making a coloring book 8.5x11inches but since I decided to make bleed now it's 8.625x 11.25 inches . So now which trim size should i choose ? I will be using black and white interior with white paper
I've watched several videos on book sizing. I don't get it. Most all commercially distributed novels are about 4 1/8 x 6 7/8. Why is this never pointed out? Go to any book store with a tape measure and check for yourself. KDP allows for this custom size. I just published one through them, bought my own ISBN# and local bookstores are putting it on their shelves as a local author.
Congrats on being stocked at your local book stores! My understanding is, that is the trim size for "mass market paperbacks." According to KDP, 6x9 is still the most common book trim size available in the US. And there are only certain trim sizes available for expanded distribution How did the custom trim size come out for you? I don't think I've encountered anyone else who's used that feature. Are you able to list your book on the KDP market? Or is it only available to be purchased as author copies?
Thank you for all the info! I'm a new Indie Author and writing my first children's book. Geared towards shes 6-10 years old. I found a great illustrator but she doesnt do digital art; she does watercolor with ink. I'm looking at 32-40 page count, square shaped. Most likely 8.5x 8.5. I'm very confused by margins. How big should she make her illustrations? Then once I receive her illustrations I'm assuming her or I scan in a high resolution and then I add digital text onto her drawings in Ingram? Thank you for any information!!!!!
Hi there- great questions! Sorry for the delayed reply here. I'm not certain what the margins would be on that trim size, you'd have to check the technical specifications of your printer/distributor. One good resource is mikemotz.com/ He is an illustrator and offers publishing services for children's books. If you're still in need of help, I would consider him as a resource. Good luck!
you just made me want to givce up writing, im new and have writen alot of books, but it sounds way to complex, i just lost hope after looking up fonts and sizes, it to hard, I just want my book printed and sold. cant you smart people just keep it all simple not everyones a genius and know everything.
i have 34,755 word count on poetry...i feel that 5x8 will be too small and put page count at over 450 more or less...what size would be suggested for a larger volume of words and a little room to breatheÉ thanks hope someone can help me out with that answer:p
There are supposed standard sizes which are far from ration in the USA. To add to the confusion even with those standard sizes, they are so erratically trimmed you will be guessing as to what they are supposed to be by just measuring samples. Best is to go for roughly the size you want, get quotes from printers asking for the most economic size for them. It is very easy to choose a size that turns out to be rather inefficient and cost you more than it needs to be. America because it is not metric has really random paper sheet sizes and weights that fold and divide at widely different proportions, sizes and trims. Don't make the mistake of getting a book that is too small for your content and therefore has poorly laid out text, that is hard to read, with line lengths too short or too long.

Light.....bulb! Thanks for simplifying the book sizing.
Is there a way to design creative page layouts? Like a magazine feel to it . If so, where can you find templates for that?
