    I had a similar incident where I couldn't let the conversation go on recently. I was in a meeting where we were working our way through some complex issues and one of my older Engineering colleagues made a comment about the younger people in the room being Millenials who expected a participation trophy. I just asked "Who gave them the participation trophies when they were kids that gave them that expectation? Who were the adults?" It stopped the conversation. I told everyone maybe lets stop assigning people personality traits just because of their age bracket and told the younger Engineers in the room that they were there because we think they can help us solve issues. It actually went over really well. Respect can go both ways.

    John, what I appreciate about videos like this is the honest, no bs approach, and genuine compassion. I remember at 38 (58 for a week today), going on 39 when my marriage ended. I had 2 school age daughters living in a state with no family to fall back on. I learned who my friends where real fast and how strong, resilient and resourceful I actually am due to that challenge. In 2009, a tornado passed with in 50 feet of the apartment I was living in and destroyed the building behind mine. That was my second message. From those moments to today, I earned my master's degree, presented at academic conferences in places I never would have thought to travel to, and created goals that led to amazing accomplishments. To paraphrase Joseph Campbell in regard to challenging situations, one needs to find a way to be grateful in those moments because those challenges are gift from the universe for you to discover who you are. Again, appreciate your work, good sir.

    I'm at least partly here because of your messages about positivity and optimism. We all need more of that in our lives and I can always count on you to deliver that (even if you think I should tuck my shirt collars into my sweater!! 🤣)
    A couple more things....I live by the adage of "stop thinking and start doing"...Also, what I've also learned is that I don't have to have an opinion about everything or give my energy to care about everything. It only leads to division and unnecessary negativity that no one needs.

    John, great subject. Ive been out of work for 2 years straight, living "off the state" so to speak, haven’t had a relationship with a lady since 2014 & haven’t had intimate relations with a lady since 2016. I'm 56+ and haven’t had a long term job since 1997. Lets just say things haven’t been the best.
    You basically said "I'm not a professional therapist & am not really know how to help." John, youre doing the help by just having this UA-cam channel & talking about the different subjects that you do. I extremely appreciate. Just being able to vent on here helps a lot. You've helped me a lot.

    John, I need one reasonable advice. This is a topic that most people are concerned about. I am 46, I am an architect BUT I don’t want to wake up every morning, go to the office, spend there a full day from 09:00 to 18:00 then go home and keep on the same routine the next day. I know I hate my job and want to be free and work just for myself. From one hand - I can’t leave my job just because I have a fixed and stable salary, from another hand I know that I’m wasting my time. I wish I could enjoy the rest of my life and have a job that I love and make the things that I want. But this is the reality, I am imprisoned because I can’t find another job. What a single man in his 46 can start doing to make himself happy or just satisfied and have sufficient financial income at the same time?

    • @40OverFashion

      I think you need to answer that question. What else are you good at? What kind of problems can you solve for people? If you have answers to those questions, start working from home during the time you’re not at work. Get up a few hours earlier every day and find a way to make it happen.

    I don’t get the stopping the conversation issue. I wasn’t there so I’m going to speculate from what you said. I could be off base but this is how I read it based on what I heard in your video. I assume these people were talking about some subject you didn’t like. Clearly they were content on discussing it and you interrupted them due to a problem you had. Was anyone else in the group not liking the conversation or just you? You may not like what others are saying but they have a right to say it. Unless they were personally attacking you, realize you were in the minority opinion in that situation. You may not have liked what was being said but you don’t get to be “that guy” that disrupts the conversation. You have a couple choices: (1) just keep quiet or (2) leave. If you can’t leave (I.e. with someone) then just realize sometimes we will be in uncomfortable situations but it doesn’t give you the right to stop a group conversation because you are the odd one out. Almost without exception when I find myself in situations like that I leave and go talk with other people.

    • @40OverFashion
      @40OverFashion  10 місяців тому

      Appreciate your input, but that’s not at all what was happening. I completely understand that people are entitled to their own opinions on certain subjects, and I would never try to change anyone’s mind, or stop the conversation because of that. This was completely different.

    Ya, go on a say all you want about being grateful. I am, but when I try to help other ppl. and they don't seem to care. I question the world we live in. Im dead serious, and mean it. the world wants some of us to just give it up. there is not enough for everyone.
    just at the breaking point. ppl. pretend "oh, i care about you...ya as long as you get money or some sort of credit. otherwise, you are happy to watch ppl around you burn.
