I was a young Sailor in the Philippines in 1972. I was on a Navy AO and we operated out of Subic Bay. Every other song requested by the Sailors in Olongapo was Smoke on the water. The othere was Stairway to heaven. Good Times. Loved the USN and the PI.

The song "Smoke On The Water" was released in 1972 and tells the story of an actual event that took place at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland. During a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert, a fire broke out at the casino, and the members of Deep Purple happened to be staying in a hotel nearby. The lyrics describe the chaotic scene and the smoke rising from the fire on the water of Lake Geneva.
Due to its catchy and distinctive guitar riff, "Smoke On The Water" has become one of the most recognizable rock songs of all time and has been covered by numerous artists. The phrase itself has come to symbolize the song and the power of rock music in general.
Deep Purple were planning to record in the Casino, and their crew was due to set up as soon as Zappa's broke down. "to make records with a mobile (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Stones_Mobile_Studio) ... Zappa and the Mamas // had the best place around ... when it all was over // find another place ... we ended up at the Grand Hotel". Everything in the lyrics is literal!
I knew the casino when I was a student there back in 79, but never heard of that incidence. My roommate use to play the record of this song, all the time, that I had to study and do my yoga meditation on the roof top.

Always good to see artists still enjoying playing a song after so many years.
I have heard from couple of artists, that there is a moment when you stop doing it for fun only and start doing your job. They were paid to provide entertainment and they do perfect job at it. That’s all. And it is more than enough. If everybody did their job so perfectly as these guys, the world would be much more interesting place.
When you reach their age by then you have all the money you could ever need so you can only really be doing it for fun

I attended a DP concert in the mid 80s in El Paso, Tx. It was the 1st time I felt the music go through me. I was a fan before but became a HUGE fan after the experience. This is one AMAZING kick ass group that I never get tired of listening to. Thank you for all the great memories!!!!

One of the bands at the top of my bucket list I've never gotten to see live.
My oldest daughter Michelle Shelly Heit was concieved while her Mom Diane ( my high school girlfriend class of 74) were doin' the Dirty Deed at a grasser bonfire party in a vw bus a friend owned and a local garage band played the entire album dead on perfect.

I was there for that concert in Montreux that day. I remember it well because I saw my drama teacher there and waved hi to him. I was 14 with my dad and my friend, was a cool concert. Sounded even better in person than it does here.

Then the Beatles, OMG, the screaming. Then the British invasion. Who could ask for a better life? it was all radio then. I had a little transistor radio I took to bed with me when i was 16. I've been into rock every since. I'm a great grandma now, and sometimes I long to be young again. All i have to do is put on my headphones and away I go. Fleetwood Mac. The Stones. All of it. It was the best generation ever. Yeah, we had Viet Nam to contend with, but we also had the best music ever. Imagine a life without rock. I wouldn't want to be young again even if I could not unless it was the whole experience from Elvis on. Thank God for rock n roll. Did I mention Heart?

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO DEEP PURPLE, I HAD TO LEAVE A 1974 DEEP PURPLE CONCERT TO PROTECT MY HEARING. THEY HAD A HUGE TALL WALL OF SPEAKERS AND THE VOLUME WAS DANGEROUSLY LOUD. I DID GET TO HEAR THE OPENING ACT OF THE CONCERT, THE J GEILS BAND.
