@@cliffords2315 This is a gig from 1993. Here, you see two Leslies standing on top of two woofer cabinets and a stereo PA system left and right. The Leslies were modified to work with an outside rackmount power amp system (Crown Microtech amps, 800 Hz crossover for the Leslies) and had JBL 2482 midrange drivers and probably Peavey Black Widow woofers inside them. The Marshall Majors were used in the 70ies. For how long exactly, I don't know, since they were also used to power the Leslies during the Mk III days, as far as I've heard and it also seems like it when listening to live recordings from that era. But that dry Marshall sound without Leslies was the Mk II sound between 1970 and 1973.

@@parallaxview2143 I acquired my knowlegde eventually by reading through all available sources and trying out as much gear as I could, which took many years. I'm a Hammond enthusiast and always strived for the best rock sound one can have. It's not as straight forward as, for instance, trying to get a great Hammond Jazz sound. The single ingredient to this is "get really nice examples of the original gear from the 1950ies/60ies and meet with technicians who can bring it back to pristine condition without ruining its soul". However, a really great rock sound is based on a lot of step-by-step experimentation. It makes a lot of sense to try what has been successfully used by others. It's a great hobby. Thanks for your appreciation :-).

Now I understand why I didn't get to see the original line up in Nov 1994. I had the chance to talk to them (except for Ian Paiste, who decided not to participate at the last minute) at a Meet and Greet party before the show. Gillan, Glover and Lord (RIP) were so nice to the fans, autographing old vinyls, posing for pictures and answering questions. And there was Steve Morse, alone in a corner. Nobody payed attention to him. Me, being a guitarist, approached him and had one of the greatest talks about guitars, amps and music in general I've ever had with a major figure. I already knew who he was but couldn't figure out why he had replaced Blackmore mid tour. I can see why now.

    Dear Fans,
About ten years ago, then I was twelve years old, one day when my father wasn’t at home, I was searching for good concertfilms on one of my father’s VHS which had been recorded from foreign TV channels. I found this concert’s short version (live in Birmingham, 1993) and as a child I was so fascinated by this band, the band members, and their enchanting and impressive music style at first sight.
I’m Hungarian, and until that time in my childhood I had only listened hungarian rock bands for example Bikini, Edda, Akos. However in that moment I fall in love with Deep Purple, especially because I discovered songs in repertoire which I could had heard before on radio or somewhere, and its had a kind of mood. Such as Smoke on the water with its legendary riff. The appearance and the clothes of the guitarist, the organist, the singer… were so legendary for me, especially the organist’s glasses, hairdo, moustache… these things gave me the impression that they could be a very great, famous band with virtuoso musicians. The organist’s and the guitarist’s talent how they were playing on their instruments amazed me.
Watching the concert, I didn’t know the name of the band or band members yet. I asked my brother about it. He thought it could be Deep Purple.
That day I found in my father’s room a CD titled The very best of Deep Purple and I found on it on the one hand the same songs from the concert but in studio version, and on the other hand I discovered even more songs which produced the same effect on me just like Smoke On The Water during the watching concert. Such as Knocking At Your Back Door, Bad Attitude, Burn, The Battle Rages On, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, and Haunted.
In following weeks I got all of DP albums.
I’ve been thinking that Come Hell Or High Water is their best live performance and show and it’s full of power, legendary mood…
I’ve been considering that they are the best rock band even tough I’ve met lots of bands. Deep Purple has inspired me in music life so much.
I'm sad because I wasn't born earlier with two or three decades in order to experience their golden age and greates successes.

The first finger vibrato at 3:37 is what defines Blackmore's sound and what a genius he is. The bends after that and the phrases that follow are simply genius. Very melodic guitar playing.
Also just look at how tight the band is - the first two verses are without a guitarist and yet the hold on so tight. They could very well complete the song without Ritchie and it would still sound good.
The body language of the other members especially Lord, Paice, and Glover clearly indicate how they used to cope with the huge ego of RB. Immensely talented group of people nonetheless.

" in rock " и " fireboll". Не зря гимном хард рока считается " smoke on the wather ".

There are so many live recordings of this number with their own unique intros, but this is my favourite, by far. Both musically and visually. Gillan´s doing his own thing at the front and you can see the other three taking glances over to the other side of the stage, but building the momentum beautifully to that point of no return - Ritchie, or no Ritchie.
Jon Lord in particular, showing his prowess here.
Cheers Ritchie, a gem of a clip.

It's OK it's very nicely recorded and quite polite. Wal make solid basses that do the job. Jon Lord's Hammond is like so many modern Hammond sounds, clean and polished with just a hint of overdrive compared to the lovely dirty grit of those early rock Hammond sounds (eg Steppenwolf "Born To Be Wild" is a good example). The whole sound gets louder as they build to the three chord change, nice and predictable, nothing too outrageous.
I'm assuming you haven't heard the German Live TV version from '72. I love the way the "tune up" at the beginning (actually they're just checking their instruments are switched on and mic'd up) morphs seamlessly and organically into something more structured as Lord pumps out that three chord pattern. Blackmore's guitar is wailing, whining and bursting into feedback...everything's so LOUD (whereas these days everything seems to be so...polite and well behaved). Roger Glover is playing a Fender Precision bass with maple neck - a much loved configuration of mine - the deep impact and middle frequency growl of the Precision has an edgy definition that cuts through the mix - and he's a slinky bass player on it.
Yeh, the mix has some wooliness in the bass frequencies - it's not as polished and professionally recorded as what we get these days. But I'd willingly sacrifice a bit of hi fidelity for real spirit and attitude.

This live performance is well known for Blackmore's erratic behaviour on stage. The band opened with Highway Star without Blackmore who did not enter the stage until his guitar solo section approximately 3:00 in. For unknown reasons, he took issue with the presence of a cameraman filming behind Ian Gillian on the opposite side of the stage. In the midst of his solo, he looked around for a projectile object and threw a cup of water at the cameraman. The band was confused by the commotion but finished the song, then Blackmore promptly returned to his dressing room and would not continue the show until the cameraman was removed. Blackmore claimed to have agreed to the show's filming on the condition that no cameras were onstage or between the band and the audience.
