I'm beginning to think that Robert Downey Jr is one of those truly gifted geniuses who can do anything he wants to do, and do it well. It would have been such a waste to lose him forever to drugs. I commend him for having what it takes to come back from the brink of self-destruction and I hope he enjoys his world as much we enjoy having him in ours.
Last year I bought the Ally McBeal Christmas CD in a secondhand cdshop in Paris (of all places!), only for this Song. I really Love it :)
Robert Downey Jr. really has a fantastic voice, it has a wonderfully tragic tone, there's some deep sadness in that voice which makes it very comforting and sympathetic. The song itself is incredible IMO he does the best version.

RDJ's version is on the Ally McBeal Christmas CD. Joni Mitchell's (original) version is on her "Blue" album. Both are great.

This version is sadder, and has more emphasis on how some people feel about Christmas. I love Sarah Mclachlan's version. I prefer this one. Christmas is a time when I really wish I had a river to skate away on. Going through the reality of a marriage that is souring is so hard, this song reflects the exact mood that I or anyone else that is dealing with the loss of love or marriage.

I love the Larry/Ally storyline and the relationship between Larry and Sam. Although it has a remarkable plot hole in that he left because his son needed him, and came back to stay, within months, without Sam, and without any explanation whatsoever as for why all the sudden the boy apparently did not need him...? But otherwise, lovely storyline, lovely characters and so sad that Larry didn't have more faith in himself. I really think he was the second right one for Ally. Billy being The One.

This song is kind of tragically beautiful.
I think Ally and Larry are one of the best, most sincere tc couples. Another good one is Amy and David from Judging Amy. I love those couples who struggles but obviously care deeply for each other (well, in the fictional world anyway).

I heard this on 98.5 (Victoria) the other day. I had no idea there was a Robert Downey Jr version of this Joni Mitchell Christmas classic which he performed on the late 1990's-early 2000's TV show Ally McBeal. In fact, I never knew Downey sang. ...Or played piano. ...Or was on Ally McBeal. ...Honestly, I forgot there was an Ally McBeal. (I never watched it myself.)

getoil8; ALL of the songs on the Ally McBeal show were covers, & this was used in one of the episodes in Season 4. So obviously -- it had an 'original' version before this one. Not everyone keeps up with such things, and a LOT of people don't & never have listened to Joni -- it doesn't make them stupid. It just means they listen to different things. Regardless; i find Robert's rendition more moving than Joni's ~ her voice was too thin and reedy for me in the old days...to each his own, eah?

I adored Robert in Ally McBeal and hated it when it was discontinued. I read that certain actors are known as series killers. I could not stand Hayden Panettiere in Ally McBeal - it was discontinued not too long after she joined. Did she kill it? I also could not stand Paget Brewster in Huff, the world's best series ever - only two seasons. Food for thought... those series killers.
@pjev93 before he was sentence, the plan was that he got to propose to ally and they didup getting married and for ally to actually have her happy ending. i heard it in a interview done by the director, it's actually on youtube. but of course cause of the drugs they needed a different ending. However, i dont know if you can get the oringal script from. hope that a bit helpful...
