Kalki, the tenth avatar of Vishnu, is described in many Hindu texts, including the Bhagavata Purana and the Kalki Purana. According to these texts, Kalki will descend at a time when unrighteousness and sin are rampant, especially during the Kali Yuga, the fourth and final age of Hindu cosmology.
A Mahayuga is a cycle of four yugas: the Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. We are currently living in the Kali Yuga, which is characterized by strife, corruption, and a decline in moral values.
The Kalki Purana describes how Kalki will be born in Shambala, a secret city of the gods located in the Himalayas. His parents will be Vishu Yasha and Sumati. Like Vishnu's other avatars, Kalki will be accompanied by Lakshmi Devi, his divine consort, who will take the form of Padma, a princess from the Brihadratha dynasty in Sri Lanka (present-day Ceylon).
The goddess Adi Shakti will protect Kalki as a child. When he grows up, he will be joined by four of the seven Chiranjivis (immortals): Parashurama, Kripacharya, Ashwathama, and Vyasa Maharshi. They will help Kalki establish dharma (righteousness) and defeat Kali, ushering in a new Satya Yuga.
