Fortunatley the standard plug does run it OK,. When fittting the gaskest, use a GAS approved sealeant, and on all threaded connections. This ensures no leaks and cleanear burn.
Propane is such a nice upgrade to a generator. No messy and volatile gasoline to refill and do not have to drain tanks and carbs for long term storage. Plus you can keep a tank around forever and it never goes bad. Plus the engine will last forever.
Don't forget to keep track of oil Level. Folks get to worrying about long run times and tend to forget about the lubrication needs of the engine. But that said, this is a most helpful video.
@@s.leemccauley7302 I would think a propane solenoid would be used to prevent the propane/NG from flowing after the engine has stopped. On stand by generators there is a powered gas valve that uses the available 12 volts from the battery to open and close based on the control panel and the engine's request to open close the fuel. I wonder if it would not be a good idea to rethink this idea through.. to have a reason to shut off the gas if it ran out of oil and shuts off.. Just a thought.
I love you guys and your channel! I just bought a Honda EU2200i to deal with our recent and on-going PG&E power shutoffs here in Northern California! We also bought two Lectric XP's based partially on your unbiased reviews. We love them! Thanks again and happy trails!
It's a demand regulator. When the generator stops running (sucking gas), the flow stops. That connection should always be under negative pressure (vaccuum) when there's gas in the line, so the only risk of a leak in the joint is the engine running slightly lean.
Do you put pipe dope on your grill too? Belt and suspenders, laces and velcro too? Where do you draw the line with that? You better use explosion proof lighting and i want to see the chico in those seal-offs buddy.
This is perhaps the best tutorial video I have ever seen. Step by Step very understandable. Thanks! It helped me do the conversion without even looking at the Hutch Mountain instructions.
This is one of the most awesome videos on the entire tube.... Really explained everything extremely clearly....camera angles were perfect...spoke well...just all around a great video
I always run my generator sitting on a small board like you have yours. It keeps it from vibrating on the ground and making a dust cloud in dirty camp grounds, which result in it eating its own dirt.
Goodness gracious I get a Zip Tie! Count me in! No really thank you for doing this I'm going to get one not only to use for traveling with our Airstream but as an emergency back up generator in case the South Dakota weather misbehaves.
Amazingly simple install! Very well thought out upgrade! Now if you put a low-pressure external fitting on your RV you can lose that jerry can, that can be a pain to find a place to store. Also depending on your RV, you may be able to upsize your tanks to accommodate the greater fuel usage. We used to run taxis on propane they got worse fuel mileage but when I started propane was 19cents/litre. Multiply by 3.78 to get a us gallon and you have dirt cheap fuel. Then at Xmas time one year, the price went up to and over the price of gasoline and the whole propane infrastructure disappeared. Because propane is already atomized (it's in a gaseous state already) propane car starts very quickly. It was so clean-burning that looking at the condition of the oil in the taxi after a couple of thousand miles, you would swear you just changed it. We don't generally think of gasoline-burning engines as smelly because today's cars with fuel injection and smog devices are so much cleaner at the exhaust pipe. When diesel was forced to clean up there exhaust the standard they were tested to was called Tier 2 bin 5. I have no idea what it means except that cars had been achieving that kind of efficiency for years before that. Once I was in the basement of my house and had a window open while the lawn outside was being mowed. I had to close the window because it stunk so bad. Carbureted engines just are not that efficient.
I just did this mod to my Eu2200i and referenced this video more than the printed instructions that Hutch sent - it was straight forward. There was a delay in getting my kit as evidently Hutch is having trouble getting regulator parts and the elbow was different than pictured in video, mine is gold and was a little squirrelly screwing together.
Amazing job showing the conversion. I feel very confident performing the conversion. Excellent production - especially. GREAT AUDIO, which is just as important at the video.
Absolutely well done. The description at first was clear and concise. The install procedures were well filmed. Able to see everything. Nice job all around.
It's about time we are seeing these LP conversion kits. We have a 10,000W generator that is "dual fuel", which means it runs off of gasoline or propane and it is at least 6 years old. There are generators that run off of 3 different fuel sources but ours runs off of two. Obviously ours isn't as portable as the generator in this video but it can run our entire home and it does have wheels. We have only run it on LP, it has never had gasoline run through it and it is in pristine condition. Propane has many benefits but the fact that it almost never goes bad is the greatest reason to have generators running off of it. If you have a remote cabin or similar location, having a fuel source that you don't have to worry about going bad is a huge load off of your mind. Like you mentioned in the video, just about everything you use concerning your RV is run off LP so there usually is plenty of fuel around.
Fantastic. Bought my eu2200i today. Was thinking factory built for propane. Kind of like but the the concerns about the thread engagement. Other things worth noting: 1) Wish there'd been a water-resistant/water-tight grommet for the pass-thru of the propane hose. KEEP DRY when running. 2) Gas threads are left-handed 3) Wear gloves when taking off quick disconnect 4) Don't confuse "oder-LESS" (less odor) for a lack of CO (carbon monoxide) A lot of people put disclaimers out there ... think about this. You are clearly DIY'ers ... but you own a nice house ... so ... think about it.
PROPANE IS THE LIFEBLOOD OF AMERICA!! (famous quote by Hank Hill) Once I can get my EU2000i sold, I'm buying an EU2200i. This conversion is something I will likely do.

Ive been converting gas motors to propane since the late 80s. Cars, trucks, fork lifts, generators, irrigation pumps, lawn mowers, i started in the LP gas buisness with Suburban Prppane. 5 yrs there and 1 yr at Amerigas. Its funny to see it on you tube.
Any idea yet how long the generator will run on a 20# tank of propane? Is there a significant increase/decrease in run times for the generator? (No more getting up in the middle of the night to refill the gas tank on the genny?) Also, have you calculated cost differentials between the gas and propane versus usage times? Also...I like how you handle some of the more confrontational comments below. I don't understand why people have to respond so aggressively. If the conversion is not for them, why not simply move on with your life? Or why watch the video to begin with? You two are a nice young couple with a GREAT channel (one of my top two!); never let those trolls or negative-nellies get you down. Last thing: I LOVE that Hank Hill comment! Funny stuff.
From what I'm reading online, a 20lb tank has 4 gallons of propane in it, and would run for roughly 28 hours at 1/4 load as compared to a gallon of gasoline providing 8 hours of run time. This is just secondhand information from the internet though, I've emailed Hutch Mountain for a confirmed run time. I'll let you know what they say when I get a response. And yes, we have grown quite a thick skin to negative comments. They really don't bother us so we're able to respond with a cool head 👍
@@FateUnbound i have a Honda 2000w with less than a gallon at low i get 11 hrs and with the roof ac on(364 installed frm MicroAir) i get about 6 to 7 hrs of running time..! $2..$$ Imagine if i have to go like everyday to buy a propane tank..$20..that is way expensive%..bro..!..!
Hutch Mountain got back to me and said 30 hours of run time at quarter load, 22 hours at half load, and 12 hours at full load off of a full 20lb "bbq" size propane tank. I think that's pretty good!
Thomas Cunningham It does because Propane and Natural Gas are lower energy density fuel sources. I believe it is approximately 15% less wattage available from P/NG.
Good stuff! I run large diesel gens for emergency back up power, so we derate our units for use with different fuels (JP8 V JP5 V DF2). Didn't know percentage wise for propane however Edit: Spelling
Easy to understand review. Another option would be to purchase the Champion 3400 watt dual fuel generator. It delivers 1200 more watts, has electric start, has wheels built in for easy portability, and is already setup for use on gasoline or propane without any mods. Bonus it costs less... currently $989 from Amazon.
I like that this is not conversion from gasoline to propane but to a multi-fuel setup. Propane is cleaner burning and easier to use, but a little more expensive and less energy dense. If you're in the boonies though and the propane runs out or isn't not an option, you can make electricity using gasoline.
I ordered this kit using your promo code and just finished installing it and I couldn’t be happier. Your video was great to walk me through it one step at a time. I’m one happy camper now not having yo buy gas. How long can I expect this this to run on a tank of propane?
Forklifts are used indoors such as warehouses running propane because they do not produce carbon monoxide IF they are set up properly, I.e. not running rich (excess fuel).
I don't even have a generator and still watched this video! LOL. But, I hate fumes so I'm all for this! You do such a great job on all your instructional videos. Well done you two! Looking forward to your next travel video or campsite review!😉
Hahaha thanks Monica! Yeah we were blown away by how little odor the propane exhaust had, it is SO much cleaner burning. Travel videos coming in October, we are at my brother's in Seattle till then 😁
but as another person commented, it may be “cleaner burning”, but now you will have no warning of poisonous fumes because of it being so clean burning. this is why they add odor to propane and natural gas, so you can smell if there is a gas leak.
@@shadowsilverlight1651 this generator sits outside correct? It burns cleaner so less fumes because he switched to propane. Like I said I don't use a generator but if I'm camping next to someone who does I sure would appreciate a cleaner unit that's burning propane instead of diesel or gasoline. The dangerous fumes? It's not inside their trailer....
This is a a great install video, but want to note for those in 2022, read the directions for changes as the nylon spacer has changed in size and you have to remove the metal spacer in the air box to reapply.
With the gas tank being 0.8 gallons and run 8 hrs, that means for 4 gallons of gasoline we would get 40 hrs runtime. With propane we get 28 hrs runtime on 4 gallons. To compare, 28 hrs runtime on gasoline would be 2.8 gallons??... Gasoline here is around $2/gallon and propane is around $20 per tank (4 gallons). Gasoline cost for 28 hours is about $5.60; and, propane is $20.00. I'm not seeing how folks say propane is less costly. Help me understand where I went wrong with my math!!! Either way, I think it's well worth having two fuel sources. And you guys ALWAYS have awesome informative vlogs!!! Thanks!!!
propane is $2.79/gallon at tractor supply. You save money if you get your old tank filled, instead of swapping. They said they rarely use their generator so not having to deal with gas going stale/gumming up the carb is worth something too.
First the tank on the EU2200i is .95 gallons with 8 hours run time on gasoline. So more like 32 hours of runtime on 4 gallons of gasoline. Hutch Mountain says 30 hours of run time at quarter load, 22 hours at half load, and 12 hours at full load off of a full 20lb "bbq" size propane tank which is roughly 4 gallons of propane. I think that's pretty good! Your local propane prices are insane! Where we are now propane is only $2.35 per gallon and gasoline is $3.40 per gallon. So running off propane here would be much cheaper. It really just depends where you are and what the local fuel prices are. That's why we love that this kit gives us the option to run off gasoline or propane with the flip of a switch!
Thanks for this video. I love that it's an either-gas-or-gas(oline) and not a gasoline-to-LPG/LNG conversion. I look forward to trying this out on mine. Two questions tho: How did it change, if at all, the behavior on eco mode, and how has the noise changed? In the video it seemed louder than mine on gasoline.
Fantastic video. I got the generator and they translated the instructions into a succinct and easy to follow visual guide. It's not too long, great explanations with the detail needed. Two thumbs up!!

We agree, we are so happy we can ditch our gas can and dont have to deal with gasoline anymore. Inevitably every time I fill the generator with gas I get some on my hands and they stink of gasoline for the rest of the day.
I’m ordering . Thanks. But question. How long will it run on a propane tank? I’m thinking of just carrying a gallon of gas in my Jeep for my rpod then switch to propane when the gas runs out so I don’t have to buy more gas rotopax. Those things are expensive,
please remember if you are a winter camper that (propane/butane) gas and cartridges do not work in really cold environments because it doesnt change to gaseous state anymore (or in enough volume) and also the bottle is cooling down during usage. so might have to start on gasoline (or use RV Engine) and produce some heat for the bottle. (electric heater pad, exhaust rerouting)
Great teacher very informative. I’ve never thought about propane until now. Great idea I’m definitely going to get the bigger propane takes and doing this conversion.
Why not just drain the carb with the drain screw on the carb out the pink hose's. I find even after running the carb dry through the fuel off knob it still holds fuel.
When you start the honda count the flashes on the run light. Each flash = 100 hours. Harbor freight Predator is 1/3 the cost and a much better value. Good generators Honda is usually but HF is fine. HF honors the warranty, Honda will not.
Like the Hank Hill reference. I mow & maintain my own lawn and my neighbors always make comments. I tell them it's my Hank Hill thing. They don't get it.
Used to have a heavy truck that had been run on propane as part of a pilot project. The oil was absolutely clean but the truck was GUTLESS and used more propane (which cost more) than gasoline when I converted the motor back to gas.
Awesome video. I am now going to pull my Honda out of the mothballs and do this conversion. Being able to run it off of propane will make all the difference in the world. I hate gasoline. I got two electric cars just so I wouldn't have to deal with it any more.
Note of interest: Propane burns cooler - less BTUs - so, the generator will not produce 100% of its rated output for gasoline on propane but appx. 80% to 85% of the rated output. Keep this in mind when determining what size generator you think you need.
Hi, thanks for the insight and the demo. My question is how much wattage do you lose using the Honda 2200 on propane as compared to gasoline. Thanks. Just purchased a 2200 and want to use propane on it for my camper ac unit. Jerry

How does the Propane gas pressure regulator handle cold weather? Propane (LPG) systems in cars need to be heated with coolant fluid, otherwise the pressure regulator will freeze.
I had the same question. I want to know what the difference is in run time between the two types of fuel. I really hope they bother to answer viewer questions.

Don't forget to keep track of oil
Level. Folks get to worrying about long run times and tend to forget about the lubrication needs of the engine. But that said, this is a most helpful video.
My question is does the propane still feed when the engine cuts off from low oil shutoff? I don't see the gas being turned off while running... ??
C Elliot, I do not know. It is something that needs to be found out though.
I love the generator but was wishing I could run it on propane....so of course you guys have the answer! Thank you for another great step by step video! We also bought two Lectric XP's based partially on your unbiased reviews. We love them! Thanks again and happy trails!
I got this kit when it first came out. Never have run gas. Works great. Fantastic customer service too at Hutch Mountain. Nice video!
I also recommend using fuel rated Teflon tape or pipe joint compound on the threads of the fittings, to make sure you have a good seal.
Brass fittings.
@@mds1986ms : Belt and suspenders. Especially when dealing with flammable gasses!
It's a demand regulator. When the generator stops running (sucking gas), the flow stops. That connection should always be under negative pressure (vaccuum) when there's gas in the line, so the only risk of a leak in the joint is the engine running slightly lean.
@@ve3yjt : Same response. Belt and suspenders.
Very cool! I am a ham radio operator, and something like this would be perfect for a Field Day setup.
As always, a fantastic video teaching me more than I could have ever imagined! Great team work in the video!!
Thank you! We're glad you enjoyed it 😊
Fantastic. Bought my eu2200i today. Was thinking factory built for propane. Kind of like but the the concerns about the thread engagement. Other things worth noting:
1) Wish there'd been a water-resistant/water-tight grommet for the pass-thru of the propane hose. KEEP DRY when running.
2) Gas threads are left-handed
3) Wear gloves when taking off quick disconnect
4) Don't confuse "oder-LESS" (less odor) for a lack of CO (carbon monoxide)
A lot of people put disclaimers out there ... think about this. You are clearly DIY'ers ... but you own a nice house ... so ... think about it.
Exactly. Carbon monoxide from ANY source is ODORLESS.
PROPANE IS THE LIFEBLOOD OF AMERICA!! (famous quote by Hank Hill)
Once I can get my EU2000i sold, I'm buying an EU2200i. This conversion is something I will likely do.
Awesome! Yeah we are excited to be able to run our Honda off propane, so much cleaner than gasoline.
This video helped me make my decision on a generator purchase and I wanted to give a shout out to you guys. Awesome video..I've ordered the conversion kit and the generator will get here before the weekend. You guys helped me resolve a major quandary I was in and I went to the tip jar. FYI: Some of your links are not working, I tried to use them to make the generator purchase. Fantastic job on this video.
Hi Kevin. Does the "ECO" switch still function after install running on LP?
Thanks for you response.
This is a great idea and one I'll be doing very soon. No carb cleaning and safer fuel transportation/handling make it a no-brainer. Also, your video is about the best install video I've ever seen on UA-cam and I've seen so many. Thanks, I'll enjoy seeing more of your channel in the near future.
Thank you Steve! And you'll love this conversion. We've been using it for 7 months now and it's great!
Just bought one. Propane is much easier to find in emergencies than gasoline and hurricane season has started!
Great video! Your step-by-step guides are invaluable. Thanks !
Thank you! 😊
this is John chalker from Waterbury Connecticut I think you have done a wonderful job I doing by showing us how to change this Honda generator over to propane thank you very much guys you did a wonderful job
Thank you John we appreciate that!
Thumbs up for the Hank Hill reference 👍
Depending on how much power you're drawing as well. An ac unit on will reduce the run time due to larger draw. Just my experience.
@@FateUnbound, I agree!
Excellent post .Clear/crisp voices of both individuals .Thank You
Excellent video; but running on gas with “X” percent load equaled a runtime of what compared to the same load on a twenty pound tank?
Good point. I also wonder if it reduces the continuous wattage rating of the gen.
Didn't know percentage wise for propane however
Edit: Spelling
Here in San Diego propane is a whole dollar less than gasoline (but then it doesn't get taxed ten ways to Sunday).
@@david_sdiego The sad truth is that , even with the cost and all taxes factored in, gasoline is still cheaper per B.T.U. then propane.
@Peter Szwed Not in California. Our expensive "summer blend" & already
high taxed gas will be going up every July 1 until gas cars are squeezed out.
I ordered this kit using your promo code and just finished installing it and I couldn’t be happier. Your video was great to walk me through it one step at a time. I’m one happy camper now not having yo buy gas. How long can I expect this this to run on a tank of propane?
Please keep in mind, that while this “stinks” less, it still creates carbon monoxide so appreciate caution is needed so people and pets don’t die .☠️
yeah I think they forgot to state that. EXCELLENT comment
Hardly produces any CO, and only if its running rich. Its Carbon Dioxide.
Forklifts are used indoors such as warehouses running propane because they do not produce carbon monoxide IF they are set up properly, I.e. not running rich (excess fuel).
propane burning correctly produces water and carbon dioxide... the exact same thing humans produce.
My monooxide alarm went off, it gave me a headache so I removed the batteries.
You cut the whisker off the zip-tie. A sign of a true craftsman. You have my head nod of approval. 👍
Mark Pierson okay?
@@shadowsilverlight1651 our trailer has a carbon monoxide detector inside. We will be fine.
How long does a full tank of this propane last ?
You took the intimidation out of converting it, thank you!!!
This is a a great install video, but want to note for those in 2022, read the directions for changes as the nylon spacer has changed in size and you have to remove the metal spacer in the air box to reapply.
Looks like a great mod, David. Look forward to hearing about any issues you have running the new system. Y'all Be Safe!
Thanks Ray! We'll keep you all posted on how it performs 👍
Bob & Peg, my scenario was based on swapping. I also had the Honda gas tank size incorrect. So, new wrinkle in brain... No swapping!!-
Just followed this vid and installed my kit. Took about 30 pulls to start it though, not two! LoL!!😅
Primed it correctly?
Your step by step video gave me confidence that even I can do this, even though I’m not mechanically inclined . Fingers crossed
How easy was that, right?? It's a bit pricey but the benefits outway. Gettin this and the A/C softstart. Thanks for the discount you guys! Lookin forward to the install. Keep it tween the lines y'all
We agree, we are so happy we can ditch our gas can and dont have to deal with gasoline anymore. Inevitably every time I fill the generator with gas I get some on my hands and they stink of gasoline for the rest of the day.

But question.
How long will it run on a propane tank?
I’m thinking of just carrying a gallon of gas in my Jeep for my rpod then switch to propane when the gas runs out so I don’t have to buy more gas rotopax. Those things are expensive,
This will be mine lolz
please remember if you are a winter camper that (propane/butane) gas and cartridges do not work in really cold environments because it doesnt change to gaseous state anymore (or in enough volume) and also the bottle is cooling down during usage. so might have to start on gasoline (or use RV Engine)
and produce some heat for the bottle.
An hour meter is also a requirement on a new generator for me. Much easier to track maintenance.
When you start the honda count the flashes on the run light. Each flash = 100 hours. Harbor freight Predator is 1/3 the cost and a much better value. Good generators Honda is usually but HF is fine. HF honors the warranty, Honda will not.

Awesome video. I am now going to pull my Honda out of the mothballs and do this conversion. Being able to run it off of propane will make all the difference in the world. I hate gasoline. I got two electric cars just so I wouldn't have to deal with it any more.
Note of interest:
Propane burns cooler - less BTUs - so, the generator will not produce 100% of its rated output for gasoline on propane but appx. 80% to 85% of the rated output. Keep this in mind when determining what size generator you think you need.
I’ve seen side by side tests gas/propane of this generator and your statement is incorrect. There is no difference in power output
Add a load block and lean it for maximum power, altitude changes and fuel efficiency!

Great tutorial on the conversion. Is that regulator big enough don’t you think? Do you think they can make a smaller one.
Thank you Ralph! And yeah the regulator is pretty large but I imagine if it could be smaller it would be. I don't know how they work so I can't say.
That is a special on demand regulator. It only lets the lp out as the engine sucks it out. It also regulates the lp pressue. Some kits have the pressure regulator and the on demand regulater seperate.

Pretty impressive conversion kit but I think the kit manufacturer should include longer carburetor studs. I didn't like the nuts only having half engagement.
Oh come on now. For a kit that costs a dollar three eighty what do you want ? Lol.
I do agree about the Carb studs . The bolt in the air box should be longer also.
It is not a big deal. Those nuts are not going anywhere.
