An old scout is literally my dream vehicle. I also have a JLU on 40s and a 1000hp Tesla. I passed on the Cybertruck because there’s no pass thru midgate like the Chevy etruck. So I prefer the Rivian R1S but this Scout SUV is likely my next vehicle if they stick around. Need to see a side by side comparison to Rivian to seal the deal. Imagine powering up your campsite.
I agree this hybrid method is best. Jeep’s 4xE has it backwards. Should have been an all electric 500hp+ motor with a small gas engine to charge the batteries for range and remote areas. Best of everything.
That so-called farm and implement company just happened to be one of the largest heavy-duty truck manufacturers in the US at the time of the Scout. Still a major truck manufacturer, name changed to Navistar when they sold the farm and construction equipment divisions.
I own a Rivian, but preordered the range extended harvester. Our only issue, like you said, is long trips in our EV. This solves our problem going to more rural areas, and is the perfect two car solution especially in Washington where electricity is super cheap
Jeep are you listening? Here's my dream build, I'm a current 2021 JT willys owner. I'd like a new JT Willys, rear locker, with the Rams EV 3.6 range extender hybrid power train, add the extreme recon package, and bring back the ability to customize again , from painted fenders, led packages, metal bumpers ect. And do it all under 55k. Oh... and fix the hinge corrosion issue..
Thanks for the video guys, super cool rigs! I like the truck myself. If it can be affordable I think they are making a sweet move here. I know they said their concern is being regulated out of making gasoline cars so making an electric platform with fueling abilities is the cheapest long term play. Plus think how much simpler that drivetrain is than an engine with a transmission and then a hybrid system!?! Engine just making electricity, simple, effective, efficient. You don’t have to have the engine running constantly, it can run at its most efficient speed the entire time, you get regen braking. I think it’s all around a super cool platform. Hopefully Jeep can get some ideas from this… they are really needing it
You guys have so much passion. We love all you do, but we love this because of your wonderful passion. Have a jolly day from England ( small country off of the coast of mainland Europe)
Reserved my Traveler with gas last week. I love this concept and believe this would have made more sense for the industry as a transition into full electric.
Reserved a Terra with the harvester option. Was debating on getting a gladiator next year, but want a slightly larger bed and a higher mileage EV. This fits the bill perfectly. EV power performance with a gas extender is perfect. Simplicity of just being a generator on top of an ev instead of the overly complex hybrid bs jeep is doing makes this so much better.
You're absolutely right. The generator on the EV is, AFAIC, the ultimate safe backup for any EV. A small diesel genset would be ideal, rather than gas. What I'm NOT interested in is a 4 door vehicle, period. The $36k Alpha Motor Electric Wolf is a 2dr but no genset. (sigh) I owned a '73 IH Scout and loved it. Two wheel drive, but I took it flying often. (That's how I discovered the previously broken shock mount. Welded it up at work and was good to go same day.) So, at a reasonable price, I'd take a 2dr Terra or a Wolf since I can't realistically ($$$) convert my Tundra to electric.
The Scout was likely in development as an EV only, but then VW noticed that EV sales were stagnant, and heard the relative negative views of EVs, they tossed in the idea of adding the generator.
@@jkit3258 It’s not enough. It’s a great idea that has some understandable appeal among a group of consumers, but there’s a growing demographic of off-road enthusiasts that just wants a simple mechanical system that’s easy to work on and relatively cheaper to purchase and insure.
@@ljprep6250 no not really. It’ll be manufactured and designed by Americans in America. Design is happening in Michigan and build happens in South Carolina. They said they use a couple parts from VW but none of it is customer facing. Basically stuff like, the wire harnesses for powered windows that would be inside the door panels.
Having had an old 80 IHC Scout, a Scout reissue like this has been my dream truck for decades, however, it being an EV is a deal breaker, if they come out with a Gasoline only version, I will throw money at them for one..
My wife and I were so excited about this. Pending any negative details, drastic price jumps etc we put down reserve for a Terra and Traveller. We are in Canada. I’d be interested why no one is talking about what the battery chemistry is going to be as the battery race is fast and fierce. CATL and BYD have lots on the go, will tech drastically change in the near future and Scout will adopt something with higher energy density? IE LFP batteries….
I made the order for the traveler. I owned a 1970 scout, And my son has a 1969. So we are enthusiast. My son also ordered one as well and both of us got the range extender. Scout is all about changing up the drivetrain. As my sons scout has a 4bt, so coming out with option drivetrains is what scout is all about. Well done on the video, on explaining the benefits of a generator extending the battery. Great vid
I think you may only reserve one but it’s possible to edit and change your reservation. I reserved a truck but really love how the SUV look!! I hope that the top trim (probably with the range extender and 35”) won’t be too expensive! Remember when the new Land Cruiser was announced it supposed to be in $50k range!
This is what I've been wanting for years...I immediately reserved both Terra and Traveler. It's been an agonizingly long wait for the Jeep Gladiator 4xe, and even then I wished they would mimic the '25 Ramcharger set up. Just tired of waiting forever for the smart design approach of an EREV offroader. Way to go, Scout.
I like the idea of it and would order one today if they were on the lot!!! When the Battery cars first came out I always wondered why they did not build something like that. The generator I have would easily fit under a hood it powers half of my house when storms hit and can run 12 hours on 5 Gals. of gas.
Totally agree about the plus of the hybrid option. It's the future out west, imho. Really looking forward to offroad, low speed, range testing results.
Does the gas generator kick in only when EV runs low or can they work in tandem? Or can one have the option for either which a flick of a switch (or button)?
As a Scout enthusiast I was intrigued. I had a 70 Scout 800A that I should have never sold and now on the hunt for a Scout II. When this new Scout was being talked about and it was an EV I was interested. EV is fine, for my use it would work well. Now with this range extender it suddenly becomes much more interesting. Now granted, for the price I can build a really nice Scout II, LS swap for modern driveability and that's most likely what I'll do since I want to build another Scout. Still, in the back of my mind now I know I could buy one that would be pretty damn sweet and I could take it on the long road trips we like to do. So yeah, I'm interested
Gas is a generator though, its not an engine option, still just and EV. I want to know what Scout did to combat cold temps and charge loss like Teslas have issues with. This thing needs an efficient Diesel or Turbo 4cyl option as well.
I have a 63 Scout 80. It's in really good shape. It's a sub-culture of American rural peoples. Farmers had to have something that would go around and work in the fields. It was a different time. But when it came our the Scout 80 was a game changer then. It's nice to see other innovations that are coming to the brand. (I reserved the Traveler due to the fact of the family styling of it.) I LOVE LOVE LOVE the fact that you'll be able to turn a wrench on things when they break. That's what the OG's do. I know that also this will make the value of my "mini" Scout go up in price.
I too have the Mach E and love it - but I do only use it around town and short trips (but that's 99.5% of my driving) - I put $100 down on the Traveler with the harvester option as I miss the off roading fun I had with my Wrangler. Between my Grand Cherokee and later the Wrangler - each time I hit 30k miles some major issue blew up and I gave up on the brand. I do wonder if in the time between now and roll out...will the solid state batteries become more common? Will the gas generator be necessary - or will adding that to the SS battery give it 600+ mile range (and / or the power usage for utilities when overlanding in the middle of nowhere.
great news guys. I would love to see that option in a wrangler or gladiator, but knowing Jeep the prices will be 100k for a sport model. can't wait to have the lights in 21'JL grill size.
I need to tow 10000 lbs with 200-300 miles of range. The Terra will fit my needs. Still want to drive one before making that choice, and what else comes out between now and then.
In terms of the gas harvester, it doesn't power the wheels (which I first thought). So it doesn't go into "gas" mode. The gas generates power to the electric components to power the vehicle. Nonetheless, it's a great add-on. I like this alternative alongside my feel on hybrid.
For me the main point in a jeep or similar is to have an off road-able back up in case I get homeless or things fall apart disaster or country wise. That being said I don't mind both gas and elec, but what irritates me is that we had the tech for making these options in every car brand for years now but no good options have been made. Im gonna wait my self till they perfect and go through first recall stage or other companies follow suit and see how they compare. Its also a bad time to buy anything big right now anyway economy and quality wise.
The points made about using electric for local trips around town and gas on long trips is exactly what I like about the 4xe. 20 mile range is very short, but long enough for most trips around town. The 4xe is more "traditional" having a a more typical drive train, and using the engine to directly drive is more efficient than using it just to charge (energy is lost during charging and again during discharging on top of the normal losses). All that said, the fact may be that going the generator route is the only practical way to have hybrid with a decently long EV range...
If I were in the market, this would definitely be high on my list. The gas extender I think will be what sells it. Had someone run a stop sign today and almost hit my 23 JLU Willys XR. So who knows? I might have been in the market sooner than I expected.
All stats show ICE has least problems, followed by EV then Hybrid. So for a daily I like it. But off road I want it simple. Cant remember the last vehicle I had with engine problems. It is usually all the switches and sensors that go out. My current 3.6L pentistar daily will hit 300k in the next week. Engine runs great but many electrical items checked out many years ago lol.
One question I have to add to this. When it comes to electric vehicles. Most people have “range anxiety“. How come they throw in an over abundance of LED lighting all around the outside and inside of the vehicles? Even if they don’t need that much power. Wouldn’t every little bit count to gain a little extra range? To me it would be the same as me going to the drag strip and putting a couple hundred pounds of dumbbells in my vehicle and expect to get the ET that I was hoping for.
@ I realize that it is a minimal amount of power. I doubt it’s that less. But having one or two up front for DRL‘s I can understand. It just seems that “cosmetic lights“ seems to be a waste. Unless there are ways todim or turn off the access, not needed lights.
@@pontiacwolfyou could triple the lights on the vehicle and it would maybe take a mile of range away. LEDs are just that low in power consumption. Just putting your wife and kids in the car (ie extra weight) will make more of a difference than LEDs. It’s negligible.
I wish the new 4Runner had an option like this. I've always been a fan of Scouts and think the new Scout Traveler with generator is a great idea and will alleviate a lot of range anxiety. With my 4Runner fully weighed down, I get
And in the 2024+ models you can even use it as an emergency generator for your house or just camping by tapping into the high voltage battery. If it depletes, the gas engine acts again as a generator to provide power to both high voltage battery and the electric loads you're powering.
If you put the jeep 4xe in on battery charge it will assist in charging the battery works pretty well when traveling, the down fall is the engine will run all the time
My biggest question is what kind of curb weights. I thought about a Wrangler 4xe, but was disappointed to discover it was at least 800 pounds heavier than a standard Wrangler, which there’s a lot of additional weight for such a short EV range.
This absolutely should have been released first. Having the option of adding an APU for long road trips would have been the perfect addition for transitioning from gas to electric and would have allowed for smaller battery packs instead of trying to make bigger and bigger battery packs. The APU could have been removable to save weight and space for around town trips.
I’m currently own a 2023 Ford Bronco Badlands and I’ve reserved both editions with the range extender so hopefully by 2027 I can make my mind up. But I agree that the Scout will be a good option to have for electric around town and the gas for longer trips.
I appreciate the direct to consumer business model but I don't want ev or hybrid and I'm not alone. All I see right now is overpromising and it'll be overpriced while underdelivering.
There is nothing new with a gas engine acting as a generator in a car. The Chevy Volt worked like that, if I’m not mistaking. I do think it is a better setup than the 4xe. But for the 4xe, Jeep did what they could with the components they had around, which made sense at the time. Now, with FORM, battery issues and all that, that 4xe architecture shows its age.
I’m absolutely in love with both Scouts, but as a current VW owner, I’m going to wait until we get more details on how much VW tech is in the production models. I am hesitant on the quality of VW parts. If it turns out to be nothing more than a hybrid body on frame Atlas, I’ll have to pass
Unless they are getting a lot of free money from the government, a 2 billion investment in the grandiose facility seems like a good way to fail before you even get started.
for local EVs are great but they really need to go above 500 miles on a full charge to really take over more of the market to account for people that do long distance driving or live in cold weather areas
These will start at 60k in 3 YEARS? Yeah ok just like the cyber truck said it was supposed to start at 40k when it was revealed. But to answer your poll question, no I am not interested even if it does start at 60k retail. I feel like it’s getting to a point where 60k is the new norm for nice trimmed desirable vehicles and I’m just not gonna keep paying it. I just bought the new Land Cruiser and I think this will be my last expensive vehicle purchase. Vehicles are becoming disposable junk that won’t last over 15 years and the perpetual debt is really getting out of hand with these outrageous payments and not to mention the insane insurance premiums. It’s a a rich man’s game now.
I have never ever thought about buying something other then a Jeep, but snice my 2021 Jeep Gladiator started showing signs of rust / corrosion on the hinges and hood and the release of this gorgeous Scout has me thinking. I have owned a Jeep snice i was 19, now 43,. sigh,
Also talking about SEMA, I didn’t see Jeep tease anything, but I did see Toyota tease 2 concepts one based on the Land Cruiser and one on the new 4Runner and they look great. It may be good to do a video on those since if Toyota does actually make production versions it would be competing with the Wrangler and Bronco
@DIRTROADCRED, do you think it has a real transfer case to multiply and control that torque? It’s hard to modulate when going over rocks from 0 to 1000 pounds for torque?
The range extender model doesn't have 350 mile of EV range. It has a much smaller battery and about 150 mile EV range, adding another 350 miles of gas range.
I just reserved my scout SUV and I really hope it works out. I had a Rivian but I had to trade it in because there is no place in Pennsylvania to get them serviced and I’m not going to Cleveland to get a vehicle serviced. That’s a 5 Hour Dr. round-trip But scout can be serviced at any VW dealership or at home and with 500 mile range with the extender outstanding smartest idea ever so I’m on board the scout train but I’ll still have my 392 and we will trade in my wife’s four by E because that is a giant disappointment
The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are already slated to get the range extended plugin hybrid for 2025 or 2026, similar (but not exactly the same) powertrain as the RAM.
I think you are over thinking this. The average American or Canadian buyer of the new Scout vehicles heard "battery power" and tuned out and clicked off. I owned a 4xe and I liked it except I live where winter is pretty harsh and the battery went goofy in the cold Minnesota winter. That and charging stations are plenty here but most are just for Teslas. I had to fight over the one down the street . I now own a 392 and I am much much happier. EVs might be great in the future but right now they are out dated as soon as they come out because the tech is moving so fast.
One question I have about the vehicles that use a gas engine to charge the vehicle. Then the vehicle runs off that battery power not the gas engine. What happens in cold weather when the problems occur that we all read about on these EV vehicles? If you had a hybrid where the Gas engine actually can run the vehicle with the batteries dead. Like the Jeep Wrangler 4XE. Then when it is that cold outside. You have at least a back up and you’re not stranded. In warmer climates having the gas engine, just generate a charge for your battery would be the way to go in the future. But colder climate still have that fear of their vehicles, not starting at all.
Interesting? Yes. I see it more to replace my Grand Cherokee 4Xe rather than my 392 Wrangler, but I will not rush into placing a deposit. Like CDJR, VW has issues as well. I already checked it out a few days ago.

Reserved a traveler. Gonna trade in my Braptor for it. Super stoked
Would be interested in seeing how the gas engines hold up, especially if you don’t use them very often. I’d buy one
Because LED lights comprise about 0.001% of the battery percentage vs the electric motor.
My 4xe is up at end of 26,hopefully its a choice then because I’m in on this
Reserved a Traveler, this is just what I was waiting for!
I wish the new 4Runner had an option like this. I've always been a fan of Scouts and think the new Scout Traveler with generator is a great idea and will alleviate a lot of range anxiety. With my 4Runner fully weighed down, I get
I did reserve the suv , hope it will have a diesel generator
Reserved the Terra with gas add on. Excited for it and the push it will create for Jeep. I think it will MSRP at $70k.
Already reserved. So excited.
It’s a hybrid is how it’s getting the torque. So all those cool stats will go away at around 100k when it dies. If your house doesn’t catch fire first
And in the 2024+ models you can even use it as an emergency generator for your house or just camping by tapping into the high voltage battery.
Also this thing is very wide if the specs are correct .
@ it does look too wide.
This absolutely should have been released first. Having the option of adding an APU for long road trips would have been the perfect addition for transitioning from gas to electric and would have allowed for smaller battery packs instead of trying to make bigger and bigger battery packs. The APU could have been removable to save weight and space for around town trips.
Hello Matt! The Wagoneer is body-on-frame
I reserved as soon as they said “gas”….it was a done deal for me.
Reserved the Terra Gas add on. Was thinking about The Ram RHO or Gladiator, but this is 🔥!
I’m currently own a 2023 Ford Bronco Badlands and I’ve reserved both editions with the range extender so hopefully by 2027 I can make my mind up. But I agree that the Scout will be a good option to have for electric around town and the gas for longer trips.
Agreed with electric gas generator concept vs full EV or even a hybrid.
I appreciate the direct to consumer business model but I don't want ev or hybrid and I'm not alone.
All I see right now is overpromising and it'll be overpriced while underdelivering.
Just incorporate the Ramcharger tech into Jeep. Just use a 4 cyl diesel as the generator. I would get one. Hopefully Jeep will do this by then 😊
There is nothing new with a gas engine acting as a generator in a car.
Reserved my Traveler (EV only) on the day it was released. After owning Teslas, don't have range anxiety anymore.
Interesting stuff- Traveler looks cool- electric and gas could be expensive
Folks keep calm. 2027 is a ways away.
It’s only two years…
Time for interest rates to go down lol😂
Going to put my deposit down for the Traveler!
I’d be interested if it costs me @$50k for the Traveler. Agree with you on the concept of this gas/ev -it is what should be out now.
Wow that is amazing.
Very Interested! 🤩
Placed a $100 deposit on a Traveler with Gas Range Extender last night.
It would have my interest of they made an internal combustion engine only version, with no EV at all.
I reserved both the first day
I have never ever thought about buying something other then a Jeep, but snice my 2021 Jeep Gladiator started showing signs of rust / corrosion on the hinges and hood and the release of this gorgeous Scout has me thinking. I have owned a Jeep snice i was 19, now 43,. sigh,
A Volt 4x4. Revolutionary.
I love it!
You and I have been through this once before…. It’s Ne-VAD-uh not Ne-VAH-duh.
Other than that great content!
You can’t disrupt the off-road community with independent suspension.
