The capacity is good enough for running errands during the week, and I think should be good enough for wheeling to. I mean, on technical trails, we wheel at less than 5mph, and do 15 mph at most between sections. And we are stopped all the time for the group to go through each obstacle. I would think a 30 miles autonomy would last a full day of wheeling, at least in my case.

It's amazing that we don't see many crash recoveries there. In Michigan, at Silver Lake sand dunes recently, a dirt bike was stuffed in a jeep windshield, and people died when a drag racing jeep went out of control and hit spectators.
Silver Lake has such a small ORV area I think it's just vehicles/space ratio that really makes Silver Lake dangerous on the weekends compared to Sand Hollow.
You also gotta figure that Silver lake brings in people from all over the midwest so on perfect weekends it ends up being over-run with people who take it as possibly one of their only chances/weekends to really go full send on their rigs for the year in that type of environment, which makes for poor decision making. Pair that with Sand Hollow State Park being 20k acres where as Silver Lake SP being 3k, you get what @brianv5031 is referencing, way too many people in such a smaller area making way too loose of choices. The drag area is getting a reputation to go to at your own risk esp if they don't have a sanctioned event going on.
Glamis sand dunes is huge and well populated at times. I’ve seen all types of crashes. At sand hollow I haven’t seen any. Dumont watched a guy crash uphill while racing. Rolled 7 times and life flighted. He works on bikes here on Sunset. Central Utah dunes r steep and awesome too.
8:15 - I'm not sure why Kaytlnn tried to claim EV's are "On or off". They absolutely are not. They are on or off if you slam your foot to the floor on the accelerator pedal, but if you give it a little bit it gives you a little bit.
If everyone going into that sand knew how much difference it makes to have worn out tires and almost no air pressure, there would be far fewer people getting stuck!! LOL!! I've learned that from watching you guys get them out! 😁 Always know it's a good day when I see Ed along to "supervise". 😆😆😁
From another rollback operator. EV's for the most part are direct drive. - Motor directly connected to the drive shafts. Dead battery. If you tow these vehicles free wheeling there's a chance of doing damage to the motors. I some cases permanently destroying the electric motors. Even getting the vehicle up onto a rollback can do some damage to the electric motors. Just so as your aware.
So what's the purpose of the neutral gear on EVs? And in the particular chase of the Jeep Wrangler in the video, why you don't shift the transfer case, not the transmission into neutral?
For the most part, they dont even have a drive shaft but a motor for one or both axles or even per wheel in more rare cases, but thats not really the point that makes a difference. You should put it in towing mode to disengage the motor(s). Most EVs should have such a mode by now. Generally, flatbed is certainly the way to go and that short and slow spinning of the wheels should not cause any damage even with no tow mode engaged. The underlying issue is the regenerative braking that feeds electricity back into the battery and as such causes a resistance, kinda like pulling any vehicle while applying the brakes, thats gonna cause issues over time. In case of an EV, you would be constantly trying to charge the battery while pulling the vehicle for miles and miles which really isnt a good idea, both for the motor(s) and the battery. Yanking that Jeep out of its misery with it helping, was perfectly fine, though.
@@Ganiscolthe jeeps electric motor is connected before the transfer case in this scenario. So it drives the 4x4 system the same way the gas engine would. It only has a range of like 30mi. It's not a full EV but a PHEV

I just had a thought: Back when the first settlers went thru this area with covered wagons and narrow wooden wheels & steel tires, it must have been miserable. Seems the last thing you would want on soft sand is a wheel with a narrow contact patch.
The best thing about Katelynn is, that she is not one of these computer on wheel kids. She always acts a bit like person 50+ when she is put into a new car. She likes old cars with good old manual stuff instead of all these playstation like things new cars have. Telling Peanut, no lick is like telling the birds no fly or the fish no swim. That is something that has to be taught at a young age rather than encouraged.
This JEEP is a 4XE: no EV, but a PHEV. It has a very small battery which does not add much to the weight and give you a 100% electric range of about 30 miles. In 4x4 these cars have the front wheels driven by the combustion engine, while the rear wheels are driven by electric motors.
This is partially false. I have a 4xe. The electric motor is in the transmission before the transfer case so you have the same 4 wheel drive in full electric mode as in hybrid mode. The 4 wheel drive is the same as every other Jeep.
The Morvair is one of the coolest vehicles I have ever seen in my entire life. I have never had a Corvair but have always wanted one. This is such a classy looking retro and capable vehicle. @@Doubie. All four wheels working in unison with full lockers is about as good as it gets on any 4X4 so the drive system was not an issue. Just driver experience and tire/pressure choice for driving in hot dry fluffy sand. I'm not a big fan of PHEV since it adds the cost and maintenance of ICE to an EV plus the added complexity of synchronizing two systems however it was not a detractor here as that drive system was working flawlessly and perhaps better than many/most conventional ICE 4X4 systems today which have so many computer protections on them that its hard to overcome the limiters set on them.
@@patricklarocque1550 I did some easy Moab trails in my Rivian in 80-90 degree heat and off roading on a hard surface uses very little energy. Including A/C. Getting to and from the trail uses a lot more than hours and hours on the trail.
@@pfunk768 exactly my point - although the full electric autonomy of the 4xe wrangler is small, it should be more than enough to have a fun day on trails at full electric.
Yeah this thing is an EV… for like 20 miles at best
a hybrid will charge as you drive, but an EV will not, and I wouldn't have either one
Hello Matt & co. Yes, for some electric cars it's a big differenses between the axelleator and brakees on ordinary cars. Because I became completely exhausted even from weak vibrations from the asphalt in short trips after a got disabled and paralyzed, my wife decided to find a car with less vibrations. After a lot of tests, she was recommended an Lexus RZ450e, an electric car with throttle respons and brakes like the car she had before, but much more comfortable where I can manage a couple of hours transport if needed.
13:53 showing off the raw power, pulling that truck like it's nothing. My man!
I am a little bit more "impressed" every time I see the Morrvair in action. COOLEST recovery vehicle on the planet!! I also *LOVE* that you always pick up the trash!!
3:03 The rear wheels right here are a great example of what Matt is talking about when he talks about new tires being bad for sand. You can see the tread pulling the sand back preventing the Morrvaire from getting on top of it.
6:39 I love watching the morrvair power through the dunes! Beautiful 😊
SO MUCH FUN to watch professionals doing professional things!!
Very good video, most enjoyable. Everyone has such a great attitude, lots of smiles and laughs.
You almost never hear about it these days, but tire shaving used to be quite common with shops that do retreads. Matt have you considered getting your tires shaved? Maybe someone needs to start up a tire shaving service? The equipment is still available new.
He usually just does a bunch of burnouts or does some rock crawling to wear them down faster.
@@thomasbrovont4114Matt needs to convince Milestar to make a minimal tread sand specific desert tire so that he doesn't have to waste rubber... It would probably work well on the rocks too, but not so good in mud, snow, or on wet pavement. Tradeoffs... And swapping tires is easy enough.
Machined finish wheels always look good IMO. Chuck Taylor Converse All-Stars! I'm 77 years old, wore Chuck Taylor's as a teen, they were the top of the line basketball shoe in the '60s.
I can remember when Matt never pulled winch line.
I can remember when he didn't believe in winches.
That’s because he had to hook up the winch cables to the battery under the hood each time. As soon as he mounted the winches permanently I think he was converted.
Best recovery channel hands down, you all seem so happy wish i could be that happy everyday.😷
Think dats money dude!!!!
8:15 - I'm not sure why Kaytlnn tried to claim EV's are "On or off". They absolutely are not. They are on or off if you slam your foot to the floor on the accelerator pedal, but if you give it a little bit it gives you a little bit.
She doesn't strike me as a MENSA member.....
So an expensive piece of crap.
@@morbward8281 Aaaand here's the Luddite who knows not of what he speaks. 30 miles on electric only, it's a hybrid.
Keep up with the good work matt an team love watching your videos on UA-cam God bless
I am exactly the same way, I don't know how to use techy trucks like that, feels so alien lol. I'm all about simplicity and analog vehicles.
Seeing the MORR team out rescuing more vehicles is just MORR fun for us too. Enjoy your day.
I wonder if the heat makes the sand soft, or the heat boiling all the moisture out of the sand makes it dry, which makes it soft.
It's the total lack of moisture. After a rain, the sand hardens up and anything can drive on it.
“That’d be dope!!😜” those three words are absolutely perfect!!! Someone needs to have a sticker made!!!
Yea, those new silver rims look hectic and go so well with the chrome trim on the magnificent beast 🤩
And Peanut fresh from the groomer straight into a dust bath - of course! 😅
Over here it would straight fro the groomers to roll in "fox exhaust".....
Good to see Jeep made the brilliant decision to vent the off gas from any battery failure straight into the cabin.
That Scabadoo is a goer. 😊
Another amazing recovery day for everyone 🙌 way to go team 👏💪👏😉.
If you watch Dave you would think twice before getting a new diesel , sucking it's own exhaust is a nightmare
Noticed subscribers up from 1.75mil to 1.76mil😁Great job Team MOOR!!
Kaitlyn is a great part of the team. She is always listening and ready to learn. And not scared to get her hands dirty.
We need to see more of Jefe and the back room team.
God bless you all.
gets confused by buttons.
Wants to be the original blonde chick on the show but is not even close.
12:30 That GMC suits Caitlyn so well. It looked so badass when she rolled down the tinted window 😅
Why the extreme difference between the Morevair easily driving in reverse vs trying unsuccessfully to drive forward (@ 3:06min)? I didn't expect that.
Reverse was downhill
@@paulhowey7375I see that, now that you pointed it out. I missed that first on watch. Not very steep though.
@@oldretireddudecameras flatten angles. A 20 degree angle on camera doesn't look steep at all. When you're in the vehicle looking up at it is a whole different ball game.
I was there yesterday. 7.3 Ford was buried. Aired down to 6 psi she would go anywhere even with my waverunners. I backed into the water at the picnic table and launched me lil boats.
I like the dune recoveries.
I know you got new tires on your mare and banana. Have you ever thought about getting snow socks to fit those new tires and see how they perform in the sand??? I’ve noticed the hot weather making it really fluffy for you. Maybe snow socks will help with the new tires. Just a thought.
The A- Team. No damage, good customer relations and a bunch of fun! !! !!!
She is really able to drive a "pure car" without all these assist system modern vehicles have.
Telling Peanut, no lick is like telling the birds no fly or the fish no swim. That is something that has to be taught at a young age rather than encouraged.
Rather a licking dog then a biting dog. But you are right. 👍
That thing's a beast and i'm not talking about the Jeep.
This JEEP is a 4XE: no EV, but a PHEV. It has a very small battery which does not add much to the weight and give you a 100% electric range of about 30 miles. In 4x4 these cars have the front wheels driven by the combustion engine, while the rear wheels are driven by electric motors.
Yea, its a hybrid, which makes it even heavier because its got a gas generator and all the ev stuff
This is partially false. I have a 4xe. The electric motor is in the transmission before the transfer case so you have the same 4 wheel drive in full electric mode as in hybrid mode. The 4 wheel drive is the same as every other Jeep.
@@DeadQat exact... The electric motor is placed where the classic hydraulic torque converter should be
He would be correct if he was talking about the 4xe Compass or Cherokee, those are fwd with rear wheel electric motor
Just watch the damned video and stop trying to man-splain everything.
The Morvair is one of the coolest vehicles I have ever seen in my entire life. I have never had a Corvair but have always wanted one. This is such a classy looking retro and capable vehicle. Very very cool. Station wagons were the original SUVs. I have always thought it would be a cool idea to lift a station wagon and turn it into a raised SUV.
2:38 Hey! What kind of weather update is that!?! 🤣
😂😂😂
Got to love hearing that Morvair at 3:35 putting in the work.
I like the 4Xe it makes up for the lack of TQ these newer engine lines jeep puts in the wranglers if you have ever wheeled one the TQ is crazy and instant
Bring on that fresh supercharged 6.2 for the Movair!!!!!! She needs more juice!!!!!!🧃
I got a crush on the morrvair love it
One of my fondest memories of my childhood was when my grandma took Hector (the poodle mix) to the groomers, as soon as she opened the car door when they got back he ran straight to the horse pasture and rolled in the freshest greenest pile he could find. He knew beyond the shadow of doubt that if the cow dogs saw him all gussied up smelling like rose bushes he’d never be able to leave the porch again😂😂. What folks don’t seem to understand is dogs think they smell gorgeous even though we humans with our limited smellervision can’t appreciate the complexity and nuances that the dogs have
Content Request: could you find an old Subaru (like mid 00s or 2010s), do some light mods, and do a sand test with one?
I see lots of videos from mud runner competitions, and the Subarus always seem to make it through stuff that some trucks won't. I want to see if a Subaru is any good in the sand compared to say the Banana or Morrvair?
Subaru are garbage. Why waste the time or resources?
@@stuartpickles6907 lol no they're not. (Well, mechanically they are, but as a tech it's cheap to run one) They're an absolute blast offroad, thats the whole point. I just can't do it here as it's illegal to drive on the beaches, and anything else is clay or mud.
@TheyCallMeBabo he picked out a spud truck, a short bus, and a rear engined car to completely change it. I'm sure he could handle a little Subaru. You guys are such downers, any comment just gets shot down. Have some fun in your life once in a while
@russbell6418 nah there's only a few channels I watch lol. I ask because they primarily deal with sand, and as a towing company, it wouldn't be hard to get your hands on one eventually
@TheyCallMeBabo thank you, but the only sand where I am is the beaches, and it's illegal to drive on them here. Honestly I'd love to start up a car related channel, maybe when my two sons are a little bit older and I can deal with startup costs. (They're 9 and 3, my oldest wants to do this already)
I've built a handful of fun, _and_ reliable cars over the years, maybe I'll start filming them, nobody in my area really does it!
Hey Matt I know the sand out there is different but back in the 70s, that’s back in the 1900s for you kids. My dad and his buddies had a delivery van, step van. That they made into a camper/fishing buggy. They put airplane tires on it and that big old 2wd truck went anywhere on the sand in the outer banks.
That 100 degrees can't be that hot, its a dry heat and Matt still has his winter coat on.
Lately, 100 feels feels cool compared to what we have been having. I've seen 120+ for many days straight on my patio. Dry heat or not, it's just effing HOT in the desert.

Glad to see I am not the only one that lets seconds of air out!
Well it’s not an EV, it’s A PHEV and not that much heavier than a standard wrangler
Still junk and that drive system is not at all helpful
@@Doubie....but it makes certain (uneducated) folks 'feel good' about how they are 'doing their part to help the environment'. 😂
Matt has often had to overcome those limitations on too many of the newer 4X4's but apparently not on this Jeep PHEV.
Best!
You don’t need a damned PhD in linguistics to see that both BEV and PHEV both contain the letters EV. So yeah, they are both EVs. But jerks like you just cannot control yourselves and feel the need to wag your finger and educate the rest of us peasants.
@@billbillinger2491You mean that unless you sell your car and only use public transport (plus walking and cycling), you are not doing your part?

It’s been reported that towing an electric vehicle has its own challenges because towing an electric vehicle can damage the vehicle unless you know how to tow it. I don’t know how myself I just viewed a video showing damaged vehicle from being towed.
That may be true but the Wrangler is a hybrid. It has a 4 cylinder engine.
9 seconds? Got it! I’ll remember that next time. 😂

Your comments about electric trucks off road were interesting. I think an episode where you guys wheel an electric jeep and give your thoughts would be really popular. They drive so different.

I love that LS sound in the Morrvair on the dunes. Would love to rip around the dunes in the Morrvair! That rig is such an iconic vehicle.
I would appreciate you teaching these people how to use a spare tire in a winch when they're stuck in the sand. Instead of calling a toll for every sand stuck. Simply bury the tire in the winch to it you're welcome right out in low range.
How do you “bury a tire inside a winch”??!
Wow, you really do read the comments! Thanks for going with shiny chrome rims on the Morrvair! It looks sooo much better than the black ones on the Banana!✌️
Would never own a 4xE the extra weight of the battery and the lack of actual fuel economy don’t make it worth it.
