She drives a DeLorean, likes Martin Scorsese films (the local video shop keeps new ones for her) and when the parents go to see The Usual Suspects but have to leave before the end, it's Sister Michael who tells them who Keyser Soze is. She is a legend.
there’s only three seasons? and the third had already been done for a couple of years now at least? did they come back with another? I don’t think they did but maybe they did. I saw a thing from the show creator/writer where she specifically said it was always supposed to be only three seasons. But maybe they changed their mind.
We still don’t have season 3 over here. Derry Girls is hysterical and I after spending a large chunk of my childhood in Catholic school, I think sister Michael is spot on. It’s sad that there’s only one more season. They were also on an episode of the great British baking show, it was pure anarchy - and so funny.
Todd: I grew up in Derry, so for Halloween, I dressed as Sister Michael. I'm in San Diego now, and I was amazed at how many people on the street recognized me as Sister Michael. If you ever want a great tour of Derry, the city has fantastic historical walking tours along the olds City Walls, which were constructed in the 17th Century to keep the Irish out of the English garrison settlement. It's incredibly beautiful (it didn't seem so when I was young - I thought it was all gray and depressing. Today', it's full of life and shows like this have a powerful healing effect in that city. Poople's cultural self-esteem is now restored after centuries of bigotry and discrimination.
Sr Michael encapsulates the dry dark sarcastic humour that typifies us here in NI. Love her and totally get her. Derry girls was a huge success well done writers, actors and everyone involved.
Sister Michael is named after an arc angle, they take a saints/angel name when they join the convent and the relationship between the priest and nun is true too 😊. This show is a reflection of all Catholic schools in Ireland in the 90s and it was great 👍
I remember a teacher at my Catholic school who said three weeks before the exams , very like sister Michael. She said three weeks to ago , so if you need help with your revision, don't come to me, cause you've left far too late.
Small point but almost nobody in the show has a ‘rural’ Irish accent. Most of the characters have the accent of Derry City in Northern Ireland. Sr Michael seems to have has a middle class Cork City accent, and Fr Peter has a very generic middle class Irish accent which normally (but not always) indicates a Dublin upbringing.
I've only just started watching and it's the best writing/acting I e seen in years! I am struggling a little at times with the accent (I'm English, please forgive me, although catholic, so does that get me brownie points LOL) Brilliant show can't wait to catch up with more tonight 😁
She is very funny. When I started school almost 5 years at a private (fee paying) convent school in the UK I remember my mother having to explain that nuns would sometimes take the names of male saints et Sister Michael when they joined an order because they admired that saint which is why they had a man's name.
As a Irish-American Catholic who went to 12 years of Catholic school, I love this show and have watched it dozens of times. I am proud to say I can recite the opening line by heart. Can’t wait till season 3 is released to Netflix US.

When my daughter was little she used to try to whistle. But my mother-in-law didn’t like this and told her off with, “a whistling woman and a crowing hen are fit for neither God nor men.” Sadly, some of the biggest misogynists in Ireland are women…
@@Baile_an_Locha she died when I was 12. I was told my mother she used to say that. I could not whistle yet. In all fairness I have no idea what Our Lady felt about whistling men and can’t ask her since she passed away.
They were the guilt trips but in all honesty very innocently put forward so that you’d behave. Examples: if you were cheeky to your Mammy, fought with siblings, cursed etc “our lady would cry” if something terrible happened in the world and then it rained “that was our lady crying at the brutal acts of men towards one another “ in that context think of wars.
I live in the Midwest US and there's a convent in my small town that nuns go to retire and my own great aunt was a nun that retired there. A group of nuns would come into the restaurant I worked at weekly and the first time I waited on them I asked if they knew my aunt but totally forgot and they had know idea who my Aunt Rita was but they did know Sister Mary Regina after I snuck and text my dad asking what her 'nun name' was.
I went to Catholic school and everytime there was a Nun around i would be nervous 😂 they could be the worst if you stepped out of line, but they were so friendly and funny too. They had that dry humour. Siobhán McSweeney played it perfectly
I was schooled in catholic school since elementary through high school. I dont know why but the nuns were kind and caring to us. If a teacher isnt nice to us,we would go to the nuns and the nuns would help us. I escaped every math class because the math teacher always punish us it just get very upsetting to survived the class. I would escape myself to the little garden and no nuns ever reported me . I even tells them i am stressed out and they were not fussy about it. Some of my good friends remained good friends with me to this day...

Although the writer of the series didn’t intend to portray Orla as autistic, people with a concern about the condition have praised her performances for giving an insight into what autistic behaviour can be like (I discovered items about that aspect when Googling for info about Orla). For those who take Orla at face value she was described by an admiring reviewer in the UK Guardian as a spaced-out eccentric. There are a number of videos on UA-cam featuring the best of Orla McCool which are good to watch because she’s often in the background and can go unnoticed. However, she is gradually becoming more appreciated and now generates more views than any of the other younger characters. I love her and think she’s every bit as funny as Sister Michael.
