Lyrics
"You know who I am, " he said
The speaker was an angel
He coughed and shook his crumpled wings
Closed his eyes and moved his lips
"It's time we should be going"
Look back in anger, driven by the night
Till you come
(Waiting so long, I've been waiting so, waiting so)
Look back in anger, see it in my eyes
'Til you come
No one seemed to hear him
So he leafed through a magazine
And, yawning, rubbed the sleep away
Very sane he seemed to me
Look back in anger, driven by the night
'Til you come
(Waiting so long, I've been waiting so, waiting so)
Look back in anger, feel it in my voice
'Til you come
About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

Painting in a white shirt? You are braver than me, David...
Haha same here. No one but he could make a plain white shirt look so good
samantha lewin I'm so uncultured...totally thought you meant Dorian, the villain from The Mask 😂
He just richer then you, or anyone here xD
he pulled a sneaky on you

David really liked ruining mirrors in this period lmao
My guess is that it was a metaphor for his cocaine addiction and shattering or ruining the mirrors cuts the thread off of him but that is my interpretation
The fun fact is that he was indeed a really talented painter. Truly talented artist in every possible way.
Totally Agree ... I hope my Bowie songs on YT makes him smile ... Its a personal connection to be able to play his music ... spiritual contact.
that is debatable
I had no idea that he was a talented painter in the video fantastic song 🥰👍
Stimmt. Ein Multitalent.❤❤❤
There's an early short feature from when he was twenty years old, where a guy is painting a picture (from his imagination) of a handsome young man clearly looking like Bowie, the wind is howling in the night outside - and then suddenly the double of the man in the portrait (yes, played by DB) is knocking at his front door... :)

@@lucaslaino7292 this is an uninteresting hot take

I love how urgent this song sounds, like he's trying to get it all out of his system as efficiently as he can. it's so busy with all the percussion, and the guitar riffs are so uplifting
"Proto" grunge possibly
when he played it in concerts in the 90s, it was definitely "grunged up"
Superb song with a rich, flamboyant and funky sound - a very late sixties-inflected sound (think Traffic, Vanilla Fudge, Small Faces, some Rolling Stones tracks like Street Fighting Man...) and brilliant drumming and congas by the great Dennis Davis. The video is a perfect fit too!
@@ritabirnstiel1393 There's a video where Tony Visconti isolates the drum tracks and explains a few things about them to Dennis Davis' son - really charming! :)

The incredible Dennis Davis (rip) killing it on drums!! Beast mode here
Olive Eisner I agree. Love the drums on this song. Amazing!
Off da charts dope 🔥🔥🔥
You're so right. Mournful lyrics raised from cliche to joyful because the percussion demands it.
This might be paired with Repetition. Appears subject was abused physically.
may he rest in the pace of the lord
Throw in George Murray and Carlos Alamar. What a rhythm section!
I wonder if that painting still exists
If it doe's I would buy it.
Yes, it exists. David Bowie maked some pictures, and he was a good pinter (search in google).
I'd do anything to own that painting
I know the man who directed it, turns out they threw it just after they finished filming the video.

Best part of the song
@Charles Alexis yep, Dennis Davis was his name. Amazing drummer.
Unbelievable !
Really makes the momentum underlying the whole piece
Dennis Davis and George Murray (the bass player) were one of the best and most underrated rhythm sections of all time (and let’s not forget rhythm guitarist extraordinaire, Carlos Alomar). Dennis’ death was completely overshadowed by Bowie’s- he died a mere three months later. And apparently no one knows what happened to George Murray after Scary Monsters. He just disappeared.
Heck yeah! Lodger is definitely one of Bowie's most underrated gems.
I love your profile picture, combines my favorite things from two different mediums; books and music.
For me, it's tied for first with Scary Monsters.
Nessi. must admit a soft spot for Lodger. First Bowie record I bought. Loved it to pieces! Lodger Rules!
Always thought that myself.

Peace out David. No matter how people came to David Bowie, young or old, he's a Starman
Well put and so true.

Yes that's all I could think about as well
There could also be said something about a possible connection to a movie Bowie was in back in the 60's. Some horror flick, forget the name.
One of my favourite David Bowie songs. "Lodger" is such an underrated masterpiece, in my opinion. :)
I agree with you

Clearly cleverer lyrically than Oasis! "I fancy the mother etc"
He calls back to the Angel of Death on the _Outside_ track "I'm Deranged". At least I think he does.
Oh, his voice! So unique, he sounded like no one else.

Never heard a voice like his...maybe Peter Murphy...
Check out Scott Walker or The Walker Brothers. Bowie has said that Scott Walker had been his idol since he was a kid.
Remember seeing all these Bowie videos from Lodger,Scary Monsters and Heroes on the very early days of MTV. They all had such an effect on me.
Psychological art does have that profound effect.
This song seems to explode out of nowhere, both musically and lyrically.

There is no other man in existence (from a limelight...for idiot people who wouldn’t know depth if it hit them in the face) where when one looks at him dressed so impressively & timelessly that you aren’t able to configure of which decade he’s from- as he fits all of them. One will only find- Bowie.

This has been one of my favorite Bowie songs since 1979. I love "Lodger" and this is my favorite song from the album. Bowie was always such a cool looking cat!
This is one of many Bowie songs that catched me just after the first listen. In this case the drums specially killed me, and the vocal melody was perfect as always.
Yes, agree - the drums and percussion are so powerful, Dennis Davis has the raw power and groove of someone like Alan White here! Beautiful vocal from Bowie too with that soaring vibrato - and gosh , he's so handsome (he was thirty here)! 💗

...and 'Fantastic Voyage' on the album .... x
absolutely ..... he sounds distressed ....... it's intentional.
You either get it or you don't.
You do
@@andyking7621 'Fantastic Voyage' vocal can actually reduce me to tears it's so good
Just realized he is in a room with an A-frame ceiling, similar to the room in Blackstar. Lodger, always one of my favorites. A fantastic voyage.
@Mariel Kabanova great answer Maria, I agree wholeheartedly!
Also in last few seconds he can be seen diving under the bed. There's a person under the bed in Lazarus
...Also in Lazarus David's frantically writing. In this video he's frantically painting.
There are so many layered, references from the Blackstar album and the two music videos to other moments in his career that it all does seem intentional. With this video, he is in the bed, clutching the sheets, much like in Lazarus. The lyrics feature an angel saying “I believe it’s time to go”. Where do angels take you? The woman under the bed in Lazarus actually first appears in the attic scenes (A-Frame room like this one) in Blackstar, as one of the ‘cult members’ with the Blind Prophet character. The three cult members are again seen as ‘disciples’ of the ‘God’ character in Blackstar- Bowie with ‘eyes to see’ wielding the book who refers to himself as “I’m the Great I Am”. The Lazarus video starts with the bed woman “opening the door” and emerging from the wardrobe. Ultimately Bowie wilfully steps backwards into the wardrobe at the end of Lazarus and closes the door behind him. In the lyrics for ‘Bring Me The Disco King’ Bowie sings “You promised me the ending would be clear/ You’d let me know when the time was now/ Don’t let me know when you’re opening the door/ Stab me in the dark let me disappear”. In that song he seems to be almost trying to renegotiate a deal with death, but in the end death stayed true to it’s end of the bargain, and in Lazarus Bowie has to ‘step through the door’ intentionally. There are way more references and connections that you can make as well, its crazy.
@@Pneumanon yes i agree there are many layers and connections throughout Bowies body of work, even the hand gestures and body movement in alot of videos are the same or similar, and i assume all are very intentional Not because of a lack of inspiration or some repetitive boredom but to tie all the pieces together and stamp his Bowie mark on them, if you get what i mean. The intricate intelligence is genius.
By the way love your name. Am i correct in saying your a Tool fan and lover of intellectually artistic music.?

I have looking for this piece for years not knowing where I heard it in 1979 .. THANK YOU
He was a real artist... it makes me laugh when they call singers on talent shows “artists”. This guy was literally an artist. He was up there with the finest painters of his generation. This guy had art down to a T.

I love this classic Bowie song so much & the video he made certainly has definite “shades” of the well known story of “Dorian Gray” here as well. Such brilliant music, visuals & lyrics here together are amazing. A very underrated Bowie song imho because it’s great in so many different ways. Melodically, lyrically & creatively. David Bowie was a true master of all music that he ever created in every type of musical genre.⭐️💕💫👩🏻🎤🌟💞✨
Slip inside the eye of your mind -- woops, wrong song
oh yeah, you can tell he's just been listening to Nite Flights xD this is actually a really interesting moment because it's really the only time Bowie and Scott Walker (his idol) are peaking artistically at the same moment in time -- Walker's amazing baroque period ended and he dropped off the map just as Bowie was starting to find his voice, then Walker came back onto the scene at the same moment Bowie kind of got lost in the 80's -- but there's this little blip where Bowie's in his Berlin period and Walker briefly reappears with the legendary first side of Nite Flights (which came out in between "Heroes" and this), and I can guarantee you David Bowie was one of the first people to go out and get that record; the influence is abundantly clear in this song (the verses especially)
the only other time they're really going to come close to each other in style will be at the very end; Blackstar is by far the closest Bowie came to channeling the later, more avant-garde Scott Walker, and frankly I think he knocked it out of the park
The pictures of Dorian Gray, ft. David Bowie

"Its time we should be going" :(
What?? This is hidden in the playlist, haha.
I have a pet theory that this song is about Scott Walker. The lyrics seem to tell the story of Scott coming back to life as an artistic talent. "'You know who I am,' he said. The speaker was an angel," could refer to both Bowie's admiration of Scott and the fact that Scott wrote about Angels frequently. "No one seemed to hear him, So he leafed through a magazine, And, yawning, rubbed the sleep away, Very sane he seemed to me," fits with interviews Scott gave around the Nite Flights era where he mentioned the Heroes album reawakening him. Scott mentioned that he forced everyone in his crew to subscribe to modern record magazines so they could shift gears away from country cover albums that no one listened to. "African Night Flight" is known to be a reference to the Nite Flights album anyways, and Brian Eno has mentioned listening to Nite Flights during these sessions with Bowie. "I've been waiting so long" and "Look back in anger" would heavily apply to Scott Walker at this time, on top of Bowie singing like him on this track. "Look back in anger, driven by the NIGHT, till you come..."
...now that I think about this video, can we be sure that Bowie isn't painting a portrait of Scott Walker? Maybe the entire "Dorian Gray" theme is a reference to their relationship?
OH MY GOD HOW CAN SOMEONE BE THAT PRETTY?
He was gorgeous, wasn't he? I just don't see that many people that catch my eyes the way Bowie did..... beautiful man.
Hey!......Lots and lots of Make-up!...lol!.....
It beggers belief, there's not a bad pic, someone said of Elvis if you have everyone a camera there wouldn't be a bad pic, I think the same applies to Bowie
