  • Jonas Kaufmann as Des Grieux sings 'Donna non vidi mai' from Act I of Jonathan Kent's production of Giacomo Puccini's Manon Lescaut, The Royal Opera, 2014. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/manonlescaut
Puccini’s publisher tried to prevent him from adapting Abbé Prévost’s L’Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut - Massenet had already created a highly successful opera based on the novel. But Puccini was not to be dissuaded, claiming ‘a woman like Manon can have more than one lover’. Despite a troubled gestation (five librettists were engaged in the project), the premiere of Manon Lescaut in 1893 was Puccini’s first major triumph - a hit with critics and the public alike.
Puccini’s sumptuous, richly-coloured score is characterized by youthful vitality and filled with glorious melodies. Des Grieux expresses his passion for Manon in the Act I aria ‘Vedete? io son fedele’, lively dances evoke Manon’s luxurious life in Paris in Act II, while in the impassioned finale to Act III, ‘Pazza son!’, Des Grieux begs to be allowed to join the imprisoned Manon on her voyage to America. The opera culminates in Manon’s heartbreaking Act IV aria ‘Sola, perduta, abbandonata’, as she contemplates her impending death. Jonathan Kent's controversial new production for The Royal Opera, with a star-studded cast including Jonas Kaufmann as Des Grieux and Kristine Opolais as Manon, was The Royal Opera's first production in more than thirty years.

Every time I listen to this I just melt. This aria has always been a favourite of mine. When I first heard Jonas Kaufmann sing it I couldn't quite believe that such beauty in a male voice was possible. My God he is exquisite. It was this rendition which turned me into an avid Kaufmann fan. ❤

At the 1:27 mark he almost says "Manon Lescaut mi chiamo", but catches himself and says the right lyrics. You can hear him start the M, but he changes over without missing a beat, literally. Wonderful performance, as always.

The deep, baritonal sound is a matter of personal preference. I love the classicaly lighter tenors for this aria because they engender more sensitivity and delicacy with thr romantic sentiments of this aria. I then listen to Kaufmann and he makes me feel a heavier, more forceful declaration of love is just as moving. His power and support are just incredible and he expresses a sense of intense, bellowing yearning, like an explosion of passion. He is a remarkable tenor.

he used to be very different, he told us that he is still trying to make big improvement! Check his early recording, it is totally different tenor, of course he wants to be more dynamic and to take more heavy roles. I admire him to learn and try new stuff after mid age...

@@user-py1jg6bb2r You are right. While he was young in Zürich (I used to live close), he sang with a much more sunny timbre. I am not sure why Kaufmann and bass Pape both have throaty sounds. They both are darlings of Met. I feel that they are too much booked. 20 years ago He sang La Travita, it was great, now Kaufmann sings everything he wanted, I just cannot like that. Here is Met's disastrous Ring. Used to rush there, less and less desires now. A lot of money spent on stage, beautiful lighting, few voices.

@@user-py1jg6bb2r Thank you for the interesting discussion. Well, I do like René Pape very much. He states he is a basso cantante, and I think he is completely right. I never had the impression he'd sing throaty. Contrary to Jonas Kaufmann's style, I'd assess Pape's technique impeccable. I have many records of him, and when I sing bass, I very often take him as a reference (besides Cesare Siepi). I also like his relaxed attitude towards the whole singing circus. To me, René Pape is the most reliable bass at the moment. Don't ever write you're not an expert. A so called naïve ear is an ear without prejudice. It's unbiased and therefore dead right. Expert or not - we all have the same abilities to enjoy art and like or dislike its nuances. Happy to discuss with you. Best regards.

I am well known as one of the most ardent critics of what I call the "guttural" vocal stile of Jonas Kaufmann, BUT here I must admit that he does a very good job indeed. A dark voice, but with surprisingly healthy ring and "edge". The last high B flat probably lacks a litte bit of nasal placement and ring (according to my taste), but, in all fairness I concede that here is nothing to criticise with regard of technique and artistry. It's his way of singing, his sound. So shall it be. He's healthy with it, and probably we have more WITH Jonas Kaufmann than without. Truly a very, very special voice! But very legitimate.

After listening recording of Franco Corelli singing this aria I simply cannot get used to Jonas Kaufmann voice timbre. It is only about brightness and shining aliquots - not volume or technique (which both tenors have exceptional). I think, this is matter of taste. Nonetheless I admire his powerful personality and convincing acting. Modernistic and contemporary staging in ROH again... But still, with good taste (in contrast to unacceptable exposition of Guillame Tell last season).

I think that you simply can't compare Corelli to Kaufmann. Corelli was in another league. Corelli's technique was superb, just as good as the greatest tenors of all time (Gigli, Caruso, Jussi, Del Monaco or Pavarotti among others) and for this reason he sounded natural. Kaufmann will soon ruin his voice, just take a look at the position of his mouth when he sings and how he pronunciates the vocals, he is using the throat muscles to sing and in singing this means soon ending.

We won't hear or see this again, not here in the USA, perhaps not in Europe either. When I received news that Jonas Kaufmann had cancelled all performances of Manon Lescaut at the Met because of illness, I burst into tears, not a usual thing with me. Then Opera News on the Internet informed us Jonas had a slipped disc, and I felt that his misery called for our deepest sympathies. Next, the New Yorker's Feb.8 & 15 issue, in the Classical Music section reported that he had "withdrawn" from the Manon Lescaut performances. "Withdrawn" is such a tasteful and non-revealing word. I only know we won't ever see and hear him as Des Grieux at the Met, and I suspect he suffers from some sizeable misery not revealed by the media.
I am 89 Years old and a life long opera lover. I've seen operas in the USA and abroad, heard them on the radio, seen them on TV and UA-cam, and have many audio tapes and DVD's of favorite performances and performers. I live in the town of Jackson in Jackson Hole, a very beautiful spot on this earth, but quite isolated I am fortunate that classical music does make its way in here, but I live on low Social Security which means I can't afford to travel to the music which is performed far away.
In the recent past I have ushered for the Live in HD Operas shown in the concert hall inTeton Village, the large ski resort in Jackson Hole. It was the broadcast of the "large plank" production of the Met Ring Cycle that I first heard Jonas Kaufmann sing. He was Sigmund in Die Walküre and I was so struck by his voice I thought; "This sound is what has been missing in all the years I have been listening to Opera." I had heard glorious voices in the past, but his tenor's voice was dark and beautiful with not even a tinge of the Irish barsinger tenor in his singing. Then I found on UA-cam many of his arias, lieder, art songs etc. which helped me see how his astounding career developed. I considered myself a devotee of his glorious singing and acting who would never be able to hear him singing in the flesh on the opera stage, or standing in front of an orchestra or piano in a concert hall. I was old but able to travel, I just hadn't the financial means to travel to the places where he was to sing.
When Jonas' Wagner album was issued I bought it right away and found his singing was a delight and the Maestro, Donald Runnicles, was his Wagner conductor. I was familiar with the Maestro because for several years I had ushured for his symphony and ensemble concerts at the summer Grand Teton Music Festival. After a concert I, bearing the Wagner album in hand, went to Runnicles' dressing room and held the album up for his signature. He said , "I think I recognize that album." We had a short chat in which I said I was glad to have lived long enough to hear Jonas sing even though it was only on electronic devices, and I mourned the fact that I could never afford to hear him in person. We agreed that his singing was subline. I was very pleased to get the Maestro's signature, and resigned myself to the reality that I would never get Jonas's signature too.
Then around this Christmas just past, some incredible things began to happen. Money, unexpected, began to trickle my way. Money from friends and family who thought what about me I don't know.
I began to think about the Manon Lescauts Jonas was going to sing at the Met in February. I talked about it with my daughter who lives in Minnesota and is a recent widow. She said she didn't feel like Christmas Shopping so she would actually foot the air fares to New York and back. Not just for me, but for my granddaughter, Cara Johnson, a music lover with a Bachleor's Degree in Music, and a RN in Nursing, an ideal travel companion for one of my venerable age. She is with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and would drive up to Minneapolis and join me for the flight to New York. I ordered two tickets for the balcony and we managed to stretch the available pennies to cover other costs of such a trip to the Met. Cara organized her shifts at Mayo's with other nurses. I've been to Met Operas several times. Cara has never been to a Met Opera. My local friends who knew about these hopes and plans expressed such joy I was astounded!'
Then I got the news in an E-mail Cara sent me. I felt helpless to do a thing. What of all the non-refundable pennies we stretched to the limit to get there, to be lodged in Manhattan, to buy tickets for the Met balcony. I grieved. Cara stood fast. She wanted to go to the opera. She had done a lot to get the days off for this extravaganza. She would be in the Met Opera Building hearing a great opera; one of the worlds greatest orchestras playing Puccini's music, an up and coming soprano, and a tried and true tenor who had quickly learned the role to replace Kaufmann's Des Grieux.
So, we will take the journey to New York from Wyoming and Minnesota, skip meals, lose sleep, do some quick sight seeing, and will be sitting expectantly in our balcony seats the evening of Feb. 24th. We will fly back to our homes the next day.
I wish Jonas good luck with his health, his state of mind and his talents for the future.
I know the opportunity to hear him sing live will never come so close again.

    • @Ilvermibaleno

    • @ONeirda
      @ONeirda 4 роки тому

Ever listened to Fritz Wunderlich or Joseph Schmidt? Both are totally different type of tenor than Jonas Kaufmann, I know, but if you write "the best Germany has ever produced" ... "Germany" "produced" a lot of benchmark singers, if you know a bit of that world ... Jonas Kaufmann surely is another benchmark. But he polarizes a lot, and be aware that not anyone approves his way of singing. But he is, for sure, an eminent artist.

@@ONeirda indeed im a fan of Wunderlich, who like too many great artists was taken from us at too young an age ( 36?) I'm particularly impressed with his best rendition of Granada!

I do agree with Searainbow, the acting is good but the voice lacks the warmth and subtlety. My favourite, Bjorling, didn't have the acting skills but he had a finer voice for Italian and French opera.

    • @TheVaughan5
      @TheVaughan5 7 років тому +3

Kaufmann is a fine singer no doubt about that, but of course Bjorling is in a different league - possibly the finest lyric tenor of the 20thc and who knows - possibly the finest of all time?

    DONNA NON VIDI MAI

This is how NOT to sing lyric repertoire.
Check Beniamino Gigli, Giacomo Lauri-Volpi to know how a tenor should sing this. Heck, even Mario del Monaco with that huge voice, dramatic tenor respects this aria and makes it sound lyric, not dramatic.

I liked this Pappano/Jonathan Kent ROH version so much more than the Neuenfels production in Munich, though initially its sleeziness shocked me. But Kaufmann-Opolais chemistry was so wonderful in London (Less in Munich). But JK sang even better in Munich. He is the best.

Listen to Corelli, Bjoerling, Gigli sing this. With them, is the liquid, warm, truly vulnerable singing, true to Puccini's music. Kaufmann's voice is not right for this repertoire. Too hard, too pushed, too forced. Instead of a man falling suddenly, completely in love, we hear almost a battle cry, a call to arms....

well put-and there are many other "true" tenors who do it better

Kaufmann certainly has virtues-but as far as being a real Italianate spinto tenor-not the real object-verismo lite

    • @Jacob-ry3lu

He sings like he has a hardboiled egg in his mouth. So swallowed and throaty. Gigli, Di Stefano, and Caruso sing this aria the best.

No voice is perfect, but none has noticed the beautiful Lyric Tenor,James Valenti, who should be more famous!
Kaufmanns voice is very dark, closer to Caruso's than Domingo,so he will never sound as lyrical as Bjorling or Gigli but they also can't match his dramatic edge and power!
He,like,Domingo,is not just a singer but consummate Musician, who understands Music better than most Critics!
He is currently the greatest all round Tenor in the World!
He has excellent technique and doesn't need to push his voice,it is big and dark enough!!
