    LYRICS:
    Donna non vidi mai
    Simile a questa!
    A dirle io t'amo
    A nuova vita l'ama mia si desta
    "Manon Lescaut mi chiamo!"
    Como queste parole profumate
    Mivagam nello spirit..
    E ascose fibre...
    Vanna a carezzare!
    O sussuro gentil, deh! Non cessare
    Deh! non cessare!

    Unbelievable
    Snobbery from "experts" who couldn't touch David's talent. I applaud him for bringing classical music to a new audience. Kinda like bringing God's love to people, kind of beautiful when you think about it!? My guess is that he could sing this in an operatic style as well as anyone if he chose to do so.

    First reaction to listening, “the music and singing are beautiful”. First reaction to reading reactions, “there are a lot of opera snobs here”.
    So to be fair I listened to Pavarotti sing this (I’m assuming he is a gold standard for classical opera) and I listened to a more contemporary opera singer, Manon Lescaut. First off, they were both amazing. Lescaut’s performance was powerful and emotional. Pavarotti was just as emotional and honestly looked effortless for him. Upon further reflection I think that the Opera Snobs here are much like Len Goodman from the TV show Dancing With The Stars. No matter how effortless and beautiful the execution, there is an expected framework from which to operate in. Not being an opera purist, I do not know or value those expectations, but I can respect that a purist would feel differently. I am simply awed and moved by the amazing talent of the performer.

    • @Verist4
      @Verist4 5 років тому +3

      I find your comment to be honest and respectful. I respect that! I am an opera purist and NO, Pavarotti is NOT the gold standard for Opera. There are many type of tenors and since the times of Enrico Caruso there have been hundreds of tenors. Many of them much better than Pavarotti. Pavarotti was a very good lyric tenor that excelled in lyrics roles. Later on he moved on to SPINTO roles with mixed success. Although already popular, He became even more famous after the three tenors concert in Rome, 1990. Being very popular doesn't make you the best. Only reason Pavarotti has more recognition is because he did many recitals and concerts. He sung with many non operatic singers and was a man that loved to be popular. He had so much fun onstage. He loved to sing not just opera but songs. He was not just a singer but a business man also. He knew how to make an audience happy and he was very charismatic. I truly believe he was a great human being and I miss him. In the other hand, there were other magnificent tenors who during their lifetime did not have the advantage of televised concerts, the internet and social media. In order to know these singers you had to actually go to the opera house. Also, some of these singers were art purists and did not care for popularity or money and therefore stayed somewhat unknown. From literally hundreds of tenors that excel in opera I will give you just a few names to consider if you want to learn more. Enrico Caruso, Miguel Fleta, Giacomo Lauri Volpi, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, Jussi Bjorling, Mario del Monaco, Mario Filippeschi, Franco Corelli, Richard Tucker, Giuseppi di Stefano, Charles Craig, Alfredo Kraus, Nicolai Gedda, etc. When it comes to David Phelps: He has a very good voice and he sings very nice. His voice is beautiful. Like you said he has amazing talent. However when it comes to operatic arias he should study more and have a little more humility. Opera is NOT gospel or worship songs. He should at least try to respect the composer and give justice to the words. Opera is singing and acting. There are rules and expectations. Opera is NOT one of those art forms that are simply subjective. That's a fact NOT and opinion.

    • @dylanbrotherton4755
      @dylanbrotherton4755 5 років тому +2

      @Voic3Critic - thanks for the insight from your perspective! Thanks for the background on Pavarotti and explaining some of the differences in a tenor’s approach to performing. That is a very good point about opera being singing AND acting. I had not really considered that. Compound that with the age of some of the operas and there have likely been dozens of performers all giving their artistic interpretation of a part, while striving to master the operatic standards they were trained in. I can see now how to have someone, regardless of how talented vocally, perform a piece from a classic opera and ignore foundational operatic standards could be perceived as misrepresenting the original creation. For someone like me who does not know the operatic expectations or even the meaning behind the lyrics being sung due to not knowing the language, I could easily neglect the original intent of the composer. However, the music is beautiful and timeless and I greatly enjoy listening to melodies and arrangements.

      I wouldn't say that povorotti is a gold standard, he doesn't have the thrilling dramatic voice, but Franco corelli had it all

      @@Verist4 no it isnt its an opinion. Music like all art is sunjective. Pavarottis voice had more fundimental and secondary harmonics than any of the othe tenors than you banally listed. But that isnt the only reason he was the best. He had the greatest God given talent. David Phelps just dosnt fit into any catagory id wish to listen to. A weak insecure voice of limited range and expression.

    Beautiful like always! Well done.
    I wanted to tell anyone reading this something really important.
    One day we are all going to stand before God. If you have ever lied, stolen, used God’s name in vain (omg) which is called blasphemy , hated someone (which God consideres murder) or done other things that are against His law ( the Ten Commandments), He sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, murderer. He will judge us, and because we have all broken His law, we ALL deserve hell.
    But because He loves us, He became a human about two thousand years ago, lived without sinning, and died a terrible death He didn’t deserve because of us. Three days later He rose from the dead and one day He is coming back.
    We all deserve the ultimate punishment (hell). But God loves us so much that He took the punishment on Himself.
    We broke Gods law, Jesus paid the fine.
    If you repent from your sins ( sincerely apologize for breaking His law and turn away from doing it anymore) and trust in Him and Him only, your punishment will be paid for, you will get eternal life in heaven, and you will no longer go to hell.
    I’m not telling you this to judge you. The thought of you going to hell terrifies me. I don’t want anyone to go without hearing this wonderful news.
    Thank you whoever took the time to read this.
    If you have a Bible, I suggest you read the book of John. You can find many Bible apps on devices.
    I pray that you and everyone who reads this will think about this seriously. And I hope to see you in heaven.

    David has a beautiful, natural tenor voice. I have listened to many of his gospel songs and they are amazing for the most part. However, he is out of his depth trying to sing this aria. I have to agree his Italian diction is horrid, and the phrasing at times is not there. He uses almost no passaggio and the open vowels on his high notes are painful to hear. Given that, I doubt his audience would have noticed or cared, and likely most have never heard the aria sung properly.

      @@whirlybird5244 Amen, I like David's rendition of this song, and never really liked any opera until I heard Katherine Jenkins and the young Jackie Evancho singing some of the songs. As for the opera "purists"I am not impressed at all and have no desire to listen to Pavarotti or any of the Italian tenors. David Phelps is not trying to be an opera singer, but he's giving the audience some different things. He probably learned this in college...
