That’s so shocking that the most likely students who go through this in public schools have autism! I actually have this disability and I’ve grown a lot over the years and I’ve just graduated from a great public school. But knowing that these kids who struggle with autism are going through this tragic practice is very disappointing with how these schools are using this stimulation on students who deserve help.

My daughter is grown now but apparently in first grade, her teacher would place her in an area in the back of the class sectioned off with moveable walls. I can't remember what you call it. But they would leave her there all day, every day.

I was a student at a mental health group that routinely put kids in a blacked out small closet, and a lot of the kids put in there were claustrophobic.

Of course, they don't cite the study they're talking about. Why would anyone think you need to cite your sources? This is mainstream media, not a high school report.

Children with behavioral and emotional disabilities can be a danger to others and themselves. I work in an alternative scool/day treatment facility. This is vital to the way we keep disturbed children from ruining education opportunities for other students. I was personally assaulted by a student with emotional disabilities when I tried to stopped him from attacking another student over loosing a video game. Keep in mind that a child needs to be restrained or secluded every day of the year should be admited to a residential facility. Also, if a childs in school behavior is so volatile that educatiors or staff are forced to restrain a child, what is going on in the home situation or actual mental health of a child that would lead to that situation. I personally work with these children and do what I can to teach the children alternative and appropriate expression. This work is often reversed when a kid goes home to violence and abusive behavior. Some of these children throw desk and other items, fight peers, or even continuously make noises and instigate other students to violence. I pitty a teacher who has 30 kids in a class and has to deal with a student who is ODD or suffers with schizophrenia. Most teachers are not trained in special education as well. Many schools are understaffed. What is the answer to these fears NPR and CBS are interested in spreading?

As someone who works in a psych facility, thank you for this. People often forget that while restraints and seclusion should only be an absolute last resort, sometimes they’re the only things that’ll keep people safe immediately. Are they perfect? No. Do they need to be regulated heavily? Yes. Should they be used for every little misbehavior someone has? No.

Obviously you dont understand that "restraint" is misused, we fought back as it was applied, we were instead tortured, our arms twisted behind our back, face scraping the rug, screaming until our voices gave out, clawing the rug, suffocating. Holding a kid who is out of control is not remotely similar. You need to get educated as to why people need to be aware of the atrocities that DO happen in schools which you apparently have not worked at or attended.

Are you kidding me?? We had rooms not big enough for 2 adults w 1 chair no windows for lunch suspensions and weekend suspensions in elementary and Jr high. Almost everyone was diagnosed w ADD or ADHD. None of us turned into crazy lunatics. Parents are such snowflakes now

    • @JokersNtheOddball

This isnt about add. It's about kids with violent trauma, survivors of accidents at an early age, severe rage syndrome due to genetics and not of anyone's fault. Nothing to kid about. You and your ADHD pals wouldnt last a minute in a room with kids who went to the schools I did. Or me. People think they are tough or have a hard life. We are the toughest and have it the hardest. Nobody could handle us. Not our fault. Dont make a fool of yourself.

A long time ago these students would be thrown into an institution, so don't blame the schools for the mess of a family most of these students are coming from.

Yes, until IDEA guaranteed the right to a life and public education for disabled children, so we’re no longer discarding human beings into institutions. Disabled children can thrive when not being abused.

What about the kids mainly being disabled did you not quite understand? Parents can change genetics?

It's not always the parents there's other factors like mental disability being a very big one. I told a parent what I saw at a daycare when I was volunteering, I saw her child not only restraint but also isolated. I was told to never to come back because I told the parents what I saw. They care for their own image and the money nothing more
