If there’s one thing that sucks harder than wet paper straws, it’s putting on wet riding gear from the previous day’s ride. It’s hard to say whether he was inspired or tortured into finding a solution for this, but 45’s DIY gear dryer is quite an interesting build.

#45 has been out and about for a while now! Seems like a pretty successful clone through and through. It will be a very sad day when something unfortunate, but comical, happens.
#44 isn't that bad either. Emancipated him self early on, and I'm pretty sure, he's still doing all right out there even if we are not aware of he's undertakings .
As good as Ryan is, I prefer #45 and wish he could become a proper named presenter.

@@sammaldonado5931 yes, he's roaming around in the canadian woods, with all the camping gear, we learned about in he's last known video. Enjoying now an then good old lager beer ;). who knows, for how long and if he'll change the location at some point.
My favorite was #19, yes - I'm an old timer. He seemed more autonomous than the ones before, and the newer ones only seem to be an extension of #19. However, #45 does seem to offer a bit more class and sincerity so I'm hoping that his internal battery has a longer life than the others.

In Finland we have this thing called 'sauna'. That is where I hang everything that needs to be dried quickly. And when it's hot I go there myself too, two flies with a single slap as we say.

An old bathroom exhaust fan works really well instead of the hairdryer. Less fire risk and doesn't heat mold your ski boots in the winter.
Another alternative: 12V PC fans - they're infinitely quieter than a bathroom exhaust even going full tilt and if you put them on the intake there's no issues of steam/humidity causing damage to them.. pretty sure a couple 120s or even single 200mm PC fan would push a similar volume of air, just with less pressure
Then to make up for the lack of heat and to avoid turning your entire room into a swampy sauna (assuming this is indoors) you can place silica gel packs around the exhaust vents. Cheaper alternative to silica can be the crystal-type kitty litter from the local pet store as it's very absorbent, no mess unlike the sawdusty variety and deodourizes too! (If it can make the stink of cat shit tolerable, surely it can help with sweaty gear too)

Definitely a bit silly to use a hair dryer. Probably used for the "DIY" aestetic. That hairdryer had to be opened and wired to a switch and I assume the power cord was spliced into the outlet, the latter part being... not something I would recommend to a wide audience. Not blowin smoke here, I've built a bathroom-exhaust-powered spray booth. Don't do what I did either unless you know precisely what the safety ratings are for your device (aerosols and non-shielded electric motors don't mix). Anyway, you can get bathroom exhausts with heat elements if that's what you want from the hair dryer. They are already intended to be wired directly to mains 120/230v, so you can safely connect them to a simple lightswitch, outlet box, w/e, to a power cable. Just don't be stupid. Always connect your ground wire to the metal exterior and don't use the American 2-prong groundless plug for anything like this. If you're looking for something safer for aerosols or just paranoia in general, squirrel cage heater fans are properly shielded, for obvious reasons.
@@Varadiio you missed a few shots as well as the verbal exposition. The hairdryer was not wired to a switch nor was the power cord spliced. The "WiFi outlet" box is controlled by the app in his phone, the hairdryer is plugged into it as if it were any other outlet with the switch "on." The app turns the power on or off *within the outlet box* and the hairdryer is unmodified.
But I still agree that a hairdryer is overkill and a bit hazardous in this application. And that aerosols and unshielded electrical is bad joojoo.
500watt space heater in the bathroom, central hvac unit fan stays switched on for air circulation.

This is awesome. The only thing I'd like to add is a caution to NOT use a hairdryer, or if you do to reduce its wattage somehow. At least in the US (Canada might be different), you cannot run anything at more than 80% of a circuits current continuously. Which is why if you look carefully, almost ALL space heaters are rated for the same wattage, no matter what room "size" the manufacturer suggests. 80% of a 15 amp circuit is 12 amps, times 120 volts is 1,440 watts. That's the max you're allowed to run "continuously". Hair dryers aren't used in this fashion, so they're allowed to be higher. If you use it this way you run the risk of tripping your breaker, or worse. So make sure you de-rate it somehow or use another heat source (venting a space heater would work).
Replying mainly to boost this up so that more eyeballs see it, would hate for anyone to get hurt as it's otherwise a fabulous idea
As an electrician this made me cringe. Hair dryers get really hot and use a ton of power. A 50 watt heating pad inside the box and a computer fan would have worked with less risk

@@Spoonboy79 As not an electrician, I also cringed a bit. When empty it's not much of a concern, but as soon as you put your gear up there the reduction in airflow is going to be significant and that hairdryer is gonna get toasty quick... definitely needs to be used on the low setting if at all.
Easy way to start the aluminum tape is to flick towards the aluminum side, it bends, the backing springs back and separates. Best at a corner. Once you have tried the trick you think of all the wasted hours picking at the joint 'cause you didn't want to mess up the foil side.

@@mikesmiley6036 There is this running joke about how #45 is the 45th clone and all the previous ones have had some gruesome accidents happen to them. This is also why at the end when they record their voice they use wording like "we believe in us".
@@mikesmiley6036 The mechanics are clones, first one I found is 43, he appears in the Tyre Sealant test. 43 dies in the line of duty while anodising alluminium and gets replaced by 44. 44 dies while VOLUNTARILY testing the breathability of goretex. The only appearence of 42 I found is in a dream sequence in "Build a Heated Paint Booth" with a piece of wood through his heart.
I wonder if they have a list of all the ways previous clones have died, for reference

My boot dryer has been one of my favorite motorcycle gear investments. From riding in the wet or just sweating in my boots in hot weather, I put my motorcycle boots on the dryer after most rides. After many years and miles, my boots area in good condition and have never developed a bad smell. The rest of my gear goes into the clothes dryer with a damp towel.
The F9 mechanic is improving with each iteration, they are truly learning from past mechanics.
And it's not only the engineering, the video making is also getting astonishing.
Living in the Pacific Northwest, I've had ideas like yours, but I wanted to use a lightbulb for heat, because of fire concerns.
Now we have tiny fans for cars with USB plugs that use practically no electricity. It's a slower drying process, but that's easier on gear.
I wish I had a place to work now. I'd go out and steal your idea! 😊
I'd just go with a small box fan, larger airflow minimal electricity, less chance of a hair dryer catching fire.
just get a off the market drying cabinet, theyre the size of a fridge and could fit the gear of 2 people

PVC pipe, with many small holes at the top, to stand them upside down on is pretty clever.
Sadly, the light bulb approach is essentially no more as incandescents change to LED which offer no meaningful heat.

Those of us who were genetically diminished generally use a utility razorblade tip to peel that GDMFBASOB thin backer off the bloody tape. But my thick stubs can still (through my bifocals to) thread a needle.

1/2 inch Baltic birch plywood! Surprised Ryan put that in the budget for you #45 thats some expensive stuff these days.
1/4” Baltic would still have been overbuilt.

While I'm sure this works, I would personally omit all the insulation and heating and use a dehumidifier instead. It uses a lot less energy and might be more material friendly (not sure about that though... is heat the issue when drying leather or is it the speed at which it is dried?). I would also include hangers for a jacket and pants and funnel the dry or warm (or really any) air into the arms and legs. This prevents moisture from going through a membrane into the (hopefully still dry) interior, but is even more efficient if the garments are soaked through. I've been using a system like this for years and it is extremely effective. Unless you already have a dehumidifier, it is probably going to be a lot more expensive up front than a hair dryer, though.
These build videos are becoming some of my favorites. On par with Ryan's deep dives into technical stuff videos.
No snow here and no need for a gear dryer but the cinematography and music made me watched t he clip over 5 times. Keep up the good work #45.👍

I have an old Espar D4 Airtronic diesel heater in my camping cabin, powered by car batteries charged by solar and a small back up Honda generator. The batteries also powers LED lights and USB charging sockets.
I've been thinking of adding a locker like the one next to your drier and ducting some of the hot air to make a dry robe for wet gear.
Or a standalone drying locker bolted to the outside of the cabin with an older, smaller D1LCC heater, so I don't fill the cabin with warm damp air. I could also add a 12v socket to keep the bike battery topped up.

Add a humidity detection for automatic shut down.
As the stuff dries, it creates humidity, and once the stuff is dry, there isn't any water, so there is no exhaust humidity.
Normal household driers use that (if they have an "auto" function).

I love watching these even if I’m never gonna do it. I have a big fan in my garage for summer ventilation that pointed at a clothes horse with my gear on dries it pretty fast for a lot less watts than a hairdryer, but I love the creativity here!

It's the first time I have watched a FortNine video with headphones and not just smartphone/tablet speakers, and I appreciate the audio design!
I built something similar. Hair dryer from Goodwill, 5gal bucket, a hole saw and some bulk vacuum hose. Does riding gear, ski gear, kids rubber boots, etc. All parts stash in the bucket when not in use, and it goes in the closet. Under $40 IIRC, works a treat. I don't need it all the time, but it's amazing to have when you need it.
I get regularly soaked down here in New Zealand but I just hang everything up in the bathroom and a cheap dehumidifier does the trick in no time whether its motorcycle gear or hiking gear

I ride a lot, especially in the rain. We get a lot of rain here in Johannesburg, South Africa.
And us bikers get wet.... A LOT!!!!!!!!!!
Best trick I have for drying out your soaked shoes or boots so they good for the next morning...
Remove them, and pour out any excess water. Yea, they sometimes do fill up in the heavier storms.
Then grab as much newspaper as possible, balling pages up and stuffing them into the shoe as much as possible.
I also then, with the last few balls, incorporate the laces into the bundle then stuff that into the shoe so they also get dry.
I leave the shoes or boots upside down in the basin or bath overnight.
Next morning, pull out all the soaking wet paper and your boot / shoes should be nice and dry.
But it does depend on how wet they were, but usually they are 80 - 100% dry the next morning.
If they are really wet, it does help to maybe change out the paper middle of the night, if you can, with fresh dry paper. Then it should be good the next morning.
I tried this with my AlpineStar Winter gloves and it also works a treat on them too!
So maybe FortNine and team can give this one a test for the wet bits... 🤣🤣👍

I get a kick out of your dryer box 45. I did something close for my kids hockey gear. Ikea cabinet/closet insulated foil foam inside, flood light installed in bottom with wire mesh above incase a piece fell from hangers. A few holes for the heat to flow by convection. Worked great 4 hours dry without cracking leather.
Watching your great video from here in Australia we cannot relate to riding in snow. Evening winter it isn't THAT cold
I Love love LOVE my peet dryers. I have both the v1.0 and v2.0 with forced air.
I have the attachments for helmets and gloves, but primarily just use them for boots.
In fact, I use the absolutely silent v1.0, that just uses a warm heater to allow the air to gently rise on its own, 24/7 and rotate the last pair of shoes I've worn and I no longer have smelly shoes at all. Fellow foot sweaters will love it as much as I do.
My suggestion doesn't help with the rest of the gear like the jacket and pants. I'm definitely not dissing DIY (I have a home workshop), but wanted to make sure folks knew about the fantastic peet product. I think I have the top reviews on Facebook for these lol
Looks like peet makes some products for cabinet spaces that could be used with this idea. I also have their v1 silent boot dryer.
I love my peet as well. I thought it was a gimmick but now having owned one I’ll never go back. I work construction in the PNW so just rotate between my two pairs of work boots. Dry my moto boots on it too. I need to get the attachments you mentioned.
@spacecruisers the helmet one is great to avoid that stank helmet if you've gotten all sweaty in it. The glove one is meh as I've just shoved the gloves over the regular boot ends and it's done good enough, but I just use breathable non insulated or sealed gloves in hot ass florida.
As good as the supporting cast may be at FortNine,,,I really want to see more RYAN,,, he is a wordsmith and a real genius.
