💙 Who are we?
We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

Fibreglass exhaust wrap is readily available from motorsports outlets in rolls that are just wrapped on and fixed in position with stainless steel bands or jubilee clips. There will be heat given off due to its thickness but it accommodates different shapes well. For a 'permanent' installation you could use a Rockwool insulation that is specifically formed in pipe halves and clamped together with an aluminium or stainless steel sheet casing. This will give a surface that you can touch without fear of burning as well as it acting as sound deadening. You need to talk to heating installers as its used in boiler rooms for flues and steampipes. Lastly, you could get the pipe ceramic coated in any colour that you want that acts as a heat barrier, please check on the anticipated surface temperature. As a last and probably an overkill precaution I would fit a sheet of aluminium to the woodwork above the pipe with a space of say 12-15mm above it to allow air flow. This will deflect any heat off the pipe and precvent the wood getting hot..
This ^ ^ ^ is great advice. I'm thinking you'll probably want to go with the fiberglass wrap. It's identical to the stuff you removed from the engine originally, minus all traces of asbestos. The heat shield might actually be a good idea because the exhaust is quite close to the floor beam and it's right off the turbo exhaust outlet. Wicked job on the boat!
I AGREE, CAN'T ADD MORE👍👍👍
Rockrool is the best, same product used in oil refineries and oil process platforms for insulating of high temperature pipes. Insulating this piping is important because if it is not well insulated, the temperature inside the engine room can rise and overheat the engine and even cause a fire, even with the cooling system running. The problem is that there is little space between the ceiling and the pipe, you would have to check the thickness of the insulation layer to see if it fits.
THERMO-TEC WILL HELP YOU FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU NEED TO PROTECT YOUR PARTS AND PERFORM BETTER.
Make sure you soak the wrap in water before starting to wrap the pipe and use stainless wire or stainless zip ties to hold the wrap tightly in place. Also get a turbo blanket from wither a truck or Motorsport supplier. I can recommend Demontweaks for all items.
M.P. now i know why you are the chief engineer of the YaBa. You are a perfect fit in the engine room!🥰🥰🥰
Ben & Maria Paula you are SO awesome I cry every episode! Ben, be proud of the 'ugly Betty'! 😭🤗❤
That's so sweet! Thank you so much for the love!
mp is so beautiful, always makes me smile to just see her smiles
Agree with the exhaust wrapping comments and a metal shield spaced slightly off the deck beam. I think you will need to put antifreeze in the cooling system, not because of freezing but for corrosion protection. The dissimilar metals will cause a lot of corrosion to occur if you don't use some sort of coolant in the system other than just water.
And also to raise the boiling point.
@@manolisgledsodakis873 Antifreeze doesn't really increase the boiling point, that is done with pressure.
While acquiring my Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering & Technology we used REFRASIL PRODUCTS, i.e. “Refrasil Cloth, Refrasil Woven, Refrasil Rope Gaskets, and Refrasil Sleeving on the exhaust. Good Luck 👍 I’m quite impressed by how far the two of you have come!!! God Bless You & Keep You…🙏
I would paint the pipe with high heat paint to reduce rust before wrapping it up in heat barrier... so cute how much she loves fondling her pipe.
great update guy's ....thank you so much 😉😊
greetsz from friesland......max.....💛
Thank you so much Max! 🤩
A good roller and brushes for your large volume painting, in my opinion is a better choice for wood boats! And the time it takes to tape and protect the other areas is time consuming. And.........when you are on your travels, good brushes and rollers etc. Can be on board for touch up and you can be anywhere! PS have been a wood boat guy for 60 years. And in my old age still take specialty work to this day! And Yes! I LOVE WOOD BOATS. Live Aboard and cruiser for over 15 years. Sure wish You Tube was around then. I generally worked on boats and cruised and worked on boats from destination to destination. AWESOME LIFE! Regards and Lots of Smikes and good thoughts for All boat lovers and owners who Live their Boats
That's an awesome 80's punk rocker haircut Ben!! It IS winter down there, so I would expect to see rain. And more rain. It's a good thing MP is such a positive influence here...she makes a cloudy day seem nice. Love ya MP!!!
You bought a boat that you really knew nothing about. Now you both have detailed knowledge of every inch and aspect of that boat. Your life on it will benefit so much from this.
Love the easy vibe background music.
You have room for a muffler there, a used truck one would do, it will make your mental tranquility sooo much more!
Engine room envy here.

For the exhaust you need to check out high-end motorcycle shops. There is a fiberglass tape/wrap used for motorcycle exhausts to protect the rider's leg. There is also a high heat glue used in the door seals for wood burning stoves. This can secure the wrap in place then use a stainless steel wire to make sure it doesn't slide.
Second........... A heat shield is needed between the overhead and the exhaust pipe. It keeps a space open for air to circulate in between the overhead and exhaust pipe. It can be 14-16 inches wide and 18-24 inches long and usually stainless , centered on the closest position of the pipe. This is similar to being code for wood burning fireplaces to protect the wall and celling in houses here in the U.S. ............................. enjoy
GET PIPE WRAP FROM SUMMIT RACING, THEYLL SEND IT TO YOU GUYS
Lots of good advice in the comments and so important to follow. A safe and durable exhaust system is vital.
Don't forget to check the level of your engine oil just after first start as you will not have filled the filters before you you start for the first time.
I know you said it holds five litres but to be safe check again.
Most definitely!!
5 litres is the g/box. The engine holds more.
🤩can't wait to hear Yaba snore
Hope Australia is on your sailing destination list so I can view those beauty in person
When working with the angle grinder try to avoid getting sparks against the shield and safety glasses at all costs. Sometimes the sparks play ping pong and find its way inside the classes. Having glowing sparks in the eye is no fun. Actually I ruined two pairs of my regular glasses although I was wearing shield and safety glasses over them and I WAS avoiding the sparks. Just be careful, you only got one pair of eyes.
So the boat is red, thanks for sharing. Whoops, wrong boat, thanks anyway, your getting a lot accomplished.
I love that MP is ALL over the mechanicals of this build--you go girl !
You can get the wrap for your muffler, from any hot-rod car shop.. its a fibreglass based cloth that you wrap around the muffler, make sure you wet it lightly before wrapping, the heat from the muffler will form it. Love your videos!
Header covering for the exhaust loop. It’s a wrap for car exhaust. I use it on the hot rods I repair and build. I’ve put it on my motorcycles too. It will cut down on heat and will prevent being burnt if you touch it. It comes in rolls. They make different widths also. I have used old fire station hoses in the past too but I think that’s what was on there originally. If you do that just wrap a heavy aluminum foil over it to contain the fibers. Looking good. Thanks for sharing your progress with us.
Hi MP, don't forget to recheck the oil after running the engine, some of what you put in will remain in the filter and needs to be replaced
I have been watching you since the beginning. To see Ben become a competent boat builder is a joy to watch. I was sure you would not make it. But now...... all power and respect to you. I built a 52 foot 30 ton ketch from plans. I know what it is all about.
Thank you so much Mark! This means a lot to us!
Well as I have watched since you guys bought Yaba. I can say I look so forward to every Sunday to see the progress of this rebuild. I and in the beginning, I said, I don’t know how they expect to pay for this. And I don’t understand why they take on such a huge project. But now I have watch every week I can say, I am excited for you guys. And can’t wait to see the final project before launch. I know if it was my boat I would have a huge party on launch day. And christen her with a bottle of Champaign broken over her bow.
I feel after such a life this old boat has had, she deserved this rebuild. But at the same time I really don’t think I would have done it, but I am 60 years old and you guys are young. Would love to know when you launch her what it cost for this rebuild. The wood alone probably cost a fortune. But wow you 2 have learned and have done so much. What a great job you 2 have done. MP is a good mechanic, good job girl on this engine rebuild. Ben your rebuilding and planning skills is been genius.
There is a Yiddish proverb that loosely translated says, "Man plans and God laughs." You two are getting closer and closer to the day when I can wish you fair winds and following seas. I can hardly wait!
Nice work both of you. You really should put a heat shield between the rafter and the exhaust where it bends. I know there are some exhaust wraps that will help, but I wouldn't touch it when it's running cause it's still going to be warm. Check with a mechanic or exhaust muffler shop for a wrap and shield. Be safe stay healthy enjoy your week.
Yes I agree wrap and a heat shield
Look for a product called "Exhaust Heat Shield". It's a fiberglass/aluminum/unobtanium wrap with a ceramic insulator that comes in various widths and lengths and is attached with stainless steel ties. The product is manufactured by a company called Heatshield Products and is available from several online distributors. Heatshield Products also have a UA-cam channel with an installation video.
And Ben, when describing an end-product of your welding, you should always end on the high note. It's not functional . . . but ugly; it's ugly but functional. See how much more enthusiastic that sounds? :)
LOVE your videos!!
Thank you so much!! I had the misunderstanding that every heat protective tape had asbestos in it, that's why I was trying to find something else. Now I know they can be made with fiberglass only and that's a huge relief!
You're so right about the order! We will keep in mind your suggestion about always ending on a high note. What happened in this case is that Ben didn't feel comfortable only saying good things about his Frankenstein considering its looks 🙈
I was going to say the samething. Its used on exhaust headers as a tape rape. Its just like what they had taking off.
MP ! There’s just no way around it You are adorable!! Ben great problem solving solutions on the welding! Boy you two are on the final stretch 🤗
Guys you must support the exhaust with a vibration absorbing bracket at the top of the loop. If you don’t it will crack around it’s engine mounting point. Looking good exciting times for you both.
There is pipe wrap you can buy for heat shielding from any car parts or motor cycle store , just follow the instructions, pretty easy. The main thing I want to say is please put anti-freeze additive in your water in the engine. It increases the boiling point of the water and helps with stopping corrosive scale and sludge build up in the cooling system (especially in the heat exchanger) It also helps track down coolant leaks because the water is a different colour. Thanks for the video.
Really good job that exhaust bed is called swan neck to stop rush of
outside water rushing in and is also above water line
MJ your an engin-eer. Impressive to watch you learn all about your propulsion system. Long live Yaba!
Cool you're getting really close to being able to splash Yaba.
Have a ripper you guys!
Good morning favorite UA-cam folks! We hope the weather cooperates more. We know it can be disappointing and stressful but you have great attitudes! You’ll get her painted and it will turn out great! Closer and closer!
Thank you so much guys!!
A really productive week!! We are getting closer and closer to the water!!! Thank you for my Sunday morning coffee with Yaba!!!!❤
Thank you so much Richard!
The stuff to wrap your exhaust is the same stuff used on automotive headers. I think it's fiberglass. Love the videos you guys are an inspiration
If you don't get that boat painted soon, the suspense is killing me, I'll come down there and paint it myself!!
I would recommend that you install an aluminum heat shield above the exhaust as it is too close to the floor above and will cause a fire. Exhaust wrap will help but not enough.
So looking forward pto hearing the engine run
As mentioned before, Refrasil is the brand of a high quality thermal insulations that comes in a variety of forms. Blanket, tapes, rope, sleeves. They are safe and graded to hold a continuous running temperature of 980 to 1260°C. Often used for industrial insulation. I would consider it.
The best advice......yes Sir!
I love seeing progress every week. Can't wait to see it in the water.
As a former mechanical insulator my number one choice for the exhaust would be a Ceramic Fiber with a Satanite Refractory backing, than wire it on with bailing wire, ceramic wool is the best heat resistant fiber out there. You could also use rockwool.
K-Wool insulation is what I would recommend.
I laughed watching you remove the asbestos insulation. In the US you’d need a license, hazmat suits, full face respirators, dust mitigation, and special waste disposal.
Both of you have learnt so much, Ben with his welding and MP with the whole engine system. Yaba will be in safe hands .2x 👍
Thank you very much!
Thought you said, ‘wedding’, phew!
i so love that table great job
Great job Ben and MP perhaps making a second part just in case the other one breaks while you are out to sea. Keep being awesome.
Yet another very informative episode on Yabá, putting together an episode in such an interesting way takes lots of insight to bottle a weeks full of work under half hour frame despite the 90, 7, 3 strain, hats off to both of you, love your work
Just remember that if your engine oil filter is new, you may need to add more engine oil after you start the engine and your oil circulates through.
You guys have learned so much and still learning. I love it. Plus you are sharing your knowledge with us. I appreciate it. All the videos are great!!!
Can't wait for the engine test. It looks so new now and will be easier to maintain. Ben, fabricating and welding is a very difficult job and you are doing great at it. MP your engine work is fantastic and you are both learning so much. You should both be very proud. The paint looks great, you did well on that Ben. I know all about the rain because where I live in Manchester U.K. it rains loads. I am very excited for the future and the terrific progress you are all making. Keep well and safe. James.
Get the highest temp wrap you can afford. Never know when the engine might run too hot due to problems so you always want the best rating you can get.
I’m amazed every week with the skills that you both have acquired!! They will come in handy in the future. You’ve had the most talented teachers along the way!!!
Good luck with the weather you are becoming quite the mechanic MP as Ben is becoming a paint spayer and welder
Inhibitor required for fresh water in engine a real must asap. Looking good getting very close to launch. Little more patients it all comes together in the end.
Love I'm getting so excited.❤
More progress! Keep rolling Yaba team! Looks great! 👍👍
ya sele ve el fin, para disfrutarlo, gracias
Header wrap for racecar exhaust systems. You guys inspire us! Thank you
Ceramic blanket would work really well here and thdn you can wrap the blanket with fiberglass cloth of your choice
Hope you find an insurance company willing to write a policy on an older, wooden vessel. Some form of liability insurance is nearly a worldwide, marina requirement. Even older live-a-board fiberglass vessels, are becoming increasingly harder to insure. Whatever you do with your exhaust system may have to pass a safety survey.
I work in a shipyard and usually the pipes are thermally insulated with a layer of stone wool and then strips of cloth soaked in gypsum are wrapped around wool.
Like others have stated you can use a fibreglass exhaust wrap that should be readily available from automotive and motor bike accessory stores. It is very effective. You can use large stainless steel hose clamps at either end to make sure it does not unravel.
*Engine colors*
I like your engine color code.
I had the same idea when refited my old Renault Couach.
I first painted the external things: electric red (alternators, starter...), exhaust black, water blue etc.
Then I went to Couach motor yachts (the company that marinized Renault diesel engines) and hired one of their mechanics to deeply refurbish the motor with me.
When finished I told him I'll paint the motor body white. No way! The company's signature color was Renault blue 🙁 . Even after spraying the first yellowish zinc chromate layer, I was told, with a disgusted face: "hide that, it looks like a Vetus!"
Team spirit!
You guys made real progress this week with both painting and getting the engine ready to start looking forward to the day you splash the boat.
Amazon has similar items and marine grade exhaust heat shielding and exhaust wrap. Love the channel
So for your pipe covering look at motorcycle exhaust pipe wrap… it’s fiber glass and works on Harley Davidson Exhaust pipes… also look for it in Automotive under headed wrap tape
I cannot wait to see Yaba in the water, what a journey you have taken us on.👍😎👍
Titanium fiberglass exhaust header wrap is what you are looking for.
exhaust heat shield tape is what you are looking for!
Great video as always, if the exhaust has changed that much that you had to cut and reweld it you may have problems with the prop shaft lining up also . You may want to look at that soon so you're not surprised later. 👍
This is Really taking a looooooong time😊
Can't Wait to see that lovely boat in the water and the Adventures that follows...
MP I really love your colour coding scheme for the engine, it is simple and makes sense. Ben, don’t sell yourself short on your fabrication mate, you need to learn somehow and making a usable part for your boat is a great start, remember, if in doubt get it checked over by a pro welder as it is your engine after all. Good work guys
Thank you so much Gordon!!
i am sure the engine will start and run like new!!!!😁😉😊😘
Let's hope for that!!!!
@@SailingYaba let's do that.....🙏🙏🤗
My guess is the exhaust didn't fit because the boat has squat/squished some being on the hard and/or due to expansion and contraction of moisture content in the timbers, likely a combination. Really love your project, I'm feeling the anticipation build! Much❤!
Kiln builders use spun silica wool which is a high temperature insulation material which can be installed using the same method as would be used with fiberglass wool insulation. The advantage is that you could put your hand on it when the engine is running and the pipe is at full temperature.
Great work
There are woven insulation tapes made from Basalt available for the layer directly contacting the exhaust pipe. beyond thoat tape you can go with a mineral fibre insulation and then an outer layer of fiberglass.
I just tagged a link to Amazon for exhaust wrap, I have used it on many projects works great. They have black or a tan color.
You guys have come a long way, an soon you’ll be enjoying your awesome efforts. ❤
The ceiling on top of the big pipe should be protected with a piece of metal against heat and fire. That is what the car industry is doing when the exhaust pipe is too close to the car floor.
Please consider a heat shield above the water trap. There is not much clearance to the wooden stringers above. You guys are great!
Wrapping exhaust pipes. The various Insulating wraps cause the pipe to rust out faster, even stainless. Ceramic pipe coatings don't insulate well. I think I'd put some heat resistant insulation on that overhead beam and call it a day.
I hope that hose from the pump to the oil pan is certified for use with oil. Oil and rubber don’t work well together. The rubber hose will swell up with time and start leaking. Not something you want happening when you are miles and miles from shore. You might consider installing a piece of sheet aluminum to protect the deck brace above the exhaust pipe. That and the fiberglass wrap should protect the wood well enough.
looking great
Thanks!
They also make a carbon fiber exhaust wrap. But I agree you need a heat shield from the wood.
for the exhaust I would bet that the old ribs were thinner under the engine mounts.....every week you are closer to splashing....good work
LOOKING MIGHTY FINE
Titanium exhaust heat wrap should do the job. It works on a manifold so should on that pipe.
18:48 Motorcycles (old school ones) use a fibreglass woven band (webbing in Dutch) to wrap the pipes...So look for Pipe Wrap Tape or Band... The tape is designed to go on the hottest part of the exhaust system...but to be safe I would do at least a double wrapping and use the second layer of banding to fasten a couple of stainless steel mounting brackets (strips of stainless) so you can mount an aluminium heat shield or several around the hottest part of the pipe. To be extra safe I would put a piece of cement board on the the ceiling beam right above the top of the siphon, just in case... The rest of the exhaust pipe I would either single wrap or use hose clamped heat shields.
Awesome video,take care everyone 😊😊😊😊😊😊🇬🇧👍🏻
Came to your channel from Lahakai Sailing (@Lahakai). Saw you in the videos where you're helping them prepare then sail Lahakai to Santa Catarina.
I've subscribed and I'll start binging your videos from episode 1.
-- Sophie 😀❤️💕
I heard "Yaba" mentioned on Expedition Evans sailing channel this week and remembered you. I used to follow you, but was already watching your friends Duca and Roberta build and felt I had enough detailed boat restoration for my palate lol. I figured you probably had another 2 years to go and didn't feel I'd be able to take anymore "build" videos for the time being, so I unsubscribed and thought I'd rejoin your audience when the end of your restoration would be in sight and were I to live that long LOL. Anyway, I'm glad to see you're close enough to the end that I will re-subscribe and follow your journey from here on out. Best of luck and always inspiring to see other's persistence paying off!
For the exhaust i believe you can get feet of header wrap for hot rods and drag strip cars. Jegs is a company that sells the stuff.
Fiberglass wrap for the exhaust is available. There are other options, you could cage it with another pipe, fill the cage with rockwool or just airgap. I'm thinking of something like multi-wall flue pipes for wood burning stoves that are used to go thru the attic of a home.
Its looking good, the african pirates who board you, will enjoy all the hard work. 😢
MP, motorsport exhaust wrap will be good for your boat, it is designed for manifolds and very high temps and is made from modern safe materials.
you people are makIng a fantastick job of Yaba please put the guards back on the angle grinders or you will have no fingers to steer her with All the best from Cumbria UK
