@WhoDarestheMAN gamer that's...no. Just no. First of all, you can watch the Dream Theater Audition videos of both on UA-cam. Mike is one of only three people who played his audition flawlessly. Secondly, for drum kit mastery, outright energy output and complete limb control, the only one who could take Mike in some hypothetical duel is Virgil Donati. Next in line would be Marco Minneman, or maybe Travis Orbin, but he's far younger than the others and not nearly as spastic when he plays. Mostly I mean that his comprehension of the theory of what's happening and what can be done is the next closest thing. There aren't many virtuosi in the world of this caliber. Certainly not Thomas Lang. You can pick apart Mike's playing for lack of feel or audience appreciation, but that aside he's still in a tier of his own.
I never listened to dream theater until I saw the tryout vids and aside from seeing the amazing energy and focus from Mike Mangini, the clips on youtube of him talking about philosophy and what his eyes and body do when he plays, and his balance- hard t believe, but I looked into some of the books and people Mike talked about and have applied it to how I work in the kitchen where I work- this man is not only a master of a musical instrument, who understands the language and can "speak it" so amazingly here on youtube, but what I have learned has made me improve with what I see and how I guide cooks and servers where I work. Seriously, thank you Mike Mangini! You are one of the best teachers I may never meet! PS- These aren't solos, these are great tunes!
There's no such thing as a solo from MM that's too long. Unlike most solos from the average metal drummer, this is not about speed and trying to play as many notes per second as possible. This is about creating music by feeling. Mastering speed the way MM does is just one aspect of the spectrum of drumming he masters, and yet still improves in. Awesome performance, and thanks for sharing! Now it's time to break my own sticks cuz I suck! haha
Mike has an attitude that inspires the the musician spirit FAR beyond just shear talent, hard work, and musical passion! As a fusion jazz composer and musician I just have to thank him for this inspiration on a personal level and also for his contributions to us all! And the Dream Theater family!! WOW!! Keepin it happy and snappy! Thanks so much Mike!
Mike is incredible. He strikes me as a genuinely kind, warm hearted human being and, of course; his talent, hard work and gift on the kit is just absolutely....wow.
To keep something going for 24 min is incredible. Most drum solos fall flat well before that. His speed, technique, humor are all in ample evidence... fantastic.
The skill, the precision, the timing, the feel. Just incredible. Anyone that dislikes this does not understand drumming, or musicianship. They won't have the discipline to sit down at their instrument everyday and work to *EARN* that level of skill. Hating on Mike is a lot easier for them. Deep down, they wish they could blaze around the kit like that. If I had just half of Mike's abilities in playing, understanding time, and feel, I'd consider myself an expert.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer jokes??hahaha thomas lang need hard training to play song dream theater HAHAHAHHAA...watch audition drum dream theater..thomas lang 😂🤣😭😜🤭
I wonder if there's anything Mike CAN'T do on the drums. If you're a drummer and you watch and listen to what he plays, in any video, he's always right on top of it. Seriously, he may be one of the only perfect drummers out there. It's not only that he has incredible technique, but he also has SO much soul in his playing, unlike other drummers that are technical but have no soul, i.e. Weckl. Blows my mind watching/listening to Mike...
this has to be one of the best solos i´ve ever heard i have a new respect for mangini, some parts even sounded as a virgil donati groove and the quality of the sound is perfection, perfect mic work
Love You, Mike Man...gini. 😉 (ya,it shows as "Mike Man..." 🤣) You Tube doesn't know who you are!! 🤩🥰 Great Work Mike. So "Everywhere" (in playing here and with DT). Much respect and your entrance into Dream Theater left nothing to be desired. ❤
his hand/feet coordination and independence is out of this world!he can play like a right handed or a left handed person and you wouldn't know the difference!
the beauty is everywhere except the technique, the true beauty is feeling the music, and just let the groove come out, a good drummer is someone who can groove, a good drum player, is a person who has technique and speed, and it's harder to be a drummer than a drum player
Very cool!!! Glad to see more videos posted. Love your work and i am sooo glad to see you with DT. Thanks for the knuckle bump at the end of the show in Detroit!! (you came back to me as you were almost off the stage)... you made that day unforgettable!!!
Anyone that can say anything negative about this cracks me uppppp. You're funny people lol Mike, you're absolutely one of the greatest ever, if not the greatest.
Mind bending foot technique this guy , and one handed rolls. Leaves my jaw on the floor. Wouldn't think this stuff is humanly possible. Drums sound amazing.....love that snare sound. I would like to hear Mangini play with Jeff Beck, Santana and Dweezil Zappa, in each of those bands respectively, that would be a gas!
yes.every drummer has its taste...but this kind of drum solo, we can learn this alot and we can incorprate the ideas in this solo to your own drum solo...and also the thing that others cant appreciate this solo maybe its because of the sound...a cam record or not lined in so thats why...but not all will agree to that but maybe thats the cause...thats my opinion...hehe mike mangini is the best...thank you mike ive learned from you alot hehe
Lmao - someone said "lacks creativity." Rolf Mike has such a creative mastery if rhythm and phrasing augmented by complete mastery if the single, double and one handed singles...awesome clinic Mile!
21:30 put on the seat belt. Sheeat Mike, this is super human. I'am a guitarist and in comparison this far exceeds Al Dimeola, Steve Morse, or Guthrie Govan.
He's the drummer, he helps with rhythmical aspects of the music and broadens possibilities to the melody writers, and from what Rudess and Petrucci have been saying he does that awesomely, which i believe considering how vast the knowledge of his instrument clearly is.
You are absolutely correct. Sort of. Drumming IS just about banging on things rhythmically. Drumming as an art form, which is something quite a large number of people, including myself and mister Mangini do, is about translating your ideas and emotions through the things you play. Mangini has trained himself to do just this, and I see and hear him when he plays. It's art, and you are allowed not to like it, but don't say it isn't art.
I listened to this with a 4/4 click in my head and he just shit, pissed and everything else all over it! And OWNED IT! He improved for a long time as still managed to resolve on que at the beginning of a 4/4 measure! Truly amazing!!!! John Hate
Mike has great limb isolation, and the intelligence to maintain and mentally map complex stuff and odd time signatures, but that single hand thing is the sweets,, Also I love how he has evolved his style and kit kinda symmetrically, allowing for many ambidextrisims as opposed to right or left domonant kits.
It is like he is playing to a song. Everything is very well thought through and in a very melodic structure. This is just my opinion, have not played nearly as long as mangini or anyone else for that matter, bur my learning curve is slowly but steady revolving
are you an alien in human body ? its amazing how you play all these stuff so easy mate i must learn from you now you rox so hard MIKE MANGINI !!! btw awesome work in dream theater
Mike você é muito especial cara, não so como baterista, mas também como pessoa, demonstrando humildade, gentileza, amor e técnica, rsrsrs, Grande Abraço!!!
okay, I just came up with an astonishing idea 💡 John Petrucci and the dudes should write music to this whole thing and call it 'Extraviganza' or something like that 😜🤘 Grrreat job Master Mangini 👍❤️
Not my joke but someone else said it on a different Mangini video: Why was Mike Mangini kicked out of drumming school? There was nothing else he could learn.
damn! mangini knows everything! and i even thought he can't/won't do those metalcore like drum grooves alternating the left foot as the lead foot.. he did it like a cake walk!
Thank you! And it's not only his tempo, his creativity and talent and overall CHOPS are just horrid! i've been playing his stuff since I first started drumming. It was NOT a challenge in the slightest.
I'm not talking about his drumming abilities, I'm talking about what he brings to the table for the new DT album other than being a virtuoso on his instrument.
Mike you're the Shaman of drums. All you need now is real cymbals... Paiste. :) BTW I'm still trying to play (correctly) Breaking All Illusions, thanks for raising the bar man, it's a pleasure to try to play what you come up with on the drums. But seriously... you should try Paiste and hear how they sound through the mics. You'll be blown away. Cheers! Subscribed.
The first lick with the snare is very tribal. Even without the odd time change up, it sounds really good. Would be interesting if he had even a third pitch snare in there or two pitch bongo's what poly's he could come up with. The man is an absolute genius.
On behalf of most of the world Mr. Mangini, we apologize for not giving you the recognition you deserved until now after all these years. You can sleep even better now :)
His technical ability and the way he perceives drumming and music is so far beyond anyone's comprehension its unbelievable. GO MIKE.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer that's...no. Just no. First of all, you can watch the Dream Theater Audition videos of both on UA-cam. Mike is one of only three people who played his audition flawlessly. The hell do these dumb “drummer x would destroy drummer y”
Convos keep happening; open your ears and learn no matter who you’re watching 🤷🏼♂️
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer I don't care if Lang can destroy Mike. If you yourself can't do the job, you're just an 8" splash in a metal song.
These two books!
And how cool is that Colin? Very cool!!!

5:57 is one of the most epic fills I've ever heard in my entire life. This man is beyond gifted.
You don't see performances like this every day...
0:18 he plays those fast one-handed blasts without even going French grip - further proving he's a mutant. Mangini's the MAN.
Mike is incredible. He strikes me as a genuinely kind, warm hearted human being and, of course; his talent, hard work and gift on the kit is just absolutely....wow.
Thomas lang ix better
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 ....you realize Mangini beat Lang for the spot in DT right? I guess those guys don't know what they're doing ?
@Glitch-nr9ct Lol that was setup pal.
And Lang is still far better than Mangini in every.
His limb independence destroys anything Mangini can do.
@Glitch-nr9ct And DT are overhyped trash now anyway.
Portnoy got off a sinking ship.
For me it´s in the top 10 of all drum solo´s of the century.
Simply incredible, we should all listen and just appreciate one of the most amazing drummers to ever set foot on planet earth!
Thomas lang shits on him
Original, innovative, I've never heard a drummer play like you your ranking the best drum solo artist I've heard play drums
Best drummer in the world. Technical abilities beyond most peoples ability to comprehend, including myself.
To keep something going for 24 min is incredible. Most drum solos fall flat well before that. His speed, technique, humor are all in ample evidence... fantastic.

I absolutely love that snare sound.
It's a Virgil Donati snare with an Ambassador on it, by the looks of things :)
The whole kit sounds awesome
This is nuts!!!
I can't see how a person can find this boring.
This is music at it's finest and legendary talent!!
Mangini = brilliant in many, many ways. Unreal!
Consider my face well and truly melted!
5 brains, 1 body.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer jokes??hahaha thomas lang need hard training to play song dream theater HAHAHAHHAA...watch audition drum dream theater..thomas lang 😂🤣😭😜🤭
Mike makes my son to sleep (2 month's old). David, say "thank you" to uncle Mikey).
(it was interesting for him)
NO MIKE!!!DON´T STOP!!!!I WANT MORE!!!!
My favourite drummer! Saying that as someone who grew up LOVING Portnoy, Tony Royster jr
6:06 Holy fuck, kick drum plus one handed roll!!!!! Speechless! This is an awesome solo.
I wonder if there's anything Mike CAN'T do on the drums. If you're a drummer and you watch and listen to what he plays, in any video, he's always right on top of it. This totally blew me away! Mike, you are seriously devoted to your instrument!!!
This is beyond incredible... i always new Mangini was amazing, but this blows my mind, his timings and rhythms are incredible...
The beast of all time
\m/ awesome! exactly what a drum solo should me; melodic and rhythmic, and not just random noises between 3 minutes of snare rolls :P
😀😀😀😀😀
You are absolutely fantastic Mike!
Such an inspiration!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
And please continue doing this crazy stuff!
Love
Please Mike, play solos like this in the upcoming shows do DT
I wish Mike was doing this solo with Dream Theater. Much more punchy and vibrant here! : )
I still stand by that comment. : )
I don't dislike how his kit sounds in the latest albums, but I personally wish they sounded more like this. And I think Mangi would like that as well.
16:35 God is in full swing!
this has to be one of the best solos i´ve ever heard
i have a new respect for mangini, some parts even sounded as a virgil donati groove

I was only gonna watch the beginning of this video, but once I had started I simply couldn't stop watching. Too awesome to skip!

Great! I really enjoy this drummer.
This guy is ridiculously talented... Wow!
Saw him at a drum clinic in Palatine, Il a few years back. Not only is he a phenomenal musician, he's a really down to earth nice guy.
Man, I hope to be as good as him one day.
4 years later... Are you better now?
How about now😂
I challenge you all to show so much technique in one single solo as this guy do. Awesome.

Awesome stuff, reminds me of Terry Bozzio, Love mike Mangini. Great hands..
He's the drummer, he helps with rhythmical aspects of the music and broadens possibilities to the melody writers, and from what Rudess and Petrucci have been saying he does that awesomely, which i believe considering how vast the knowledge of his instrument clearly is.

I love this man
Amazing with one hand let alone two and he's equally deadly with both unlike a lot of drummers, amazing talent and playing here wowzerz.

how can Mike be able to deliver those killer last 4 minutes after a >20 minute long drum solo.... unbelievable
It is like he is playing to a song. Everything is very well thought through and in a very melodic structure. This is just my opinion, have not played nearly as long as mangini or anyone else for that matter, bur my learning curve is slowly but steady revolving
Absolutely incredible...
Mike truly makes the drums sing
This solo was amazing !!!
i watch the 16 minute one at vic theater all the time. i appreciate how he writes
16:57 when this man dies, scientists will dissect this monster like there is a no tomorrow and learn how his body works.
One thing only...he machine🧐he the best creative groove drummer fore✌️💥
MIKE MANGINI IS A DRUM WIZARD
Just a big WOW man, a big WOW!!!!!!!!
I live in Florence and I didn't know that Mike Mangini was in my city !!
are you an alien in human body ? its amazing how you play all these stuff so easy mate i must learn from you now
you rox so hard MIKE MANGINI !!!
btw awesome work in dream theater
Those toms have an amazing sound
Hi Mike.......great stuff.
longest and maybe best drum solo ever
Mike você é muito especial cara, não so como baterista, mas também como pessoa, demonstrando humildade, gentileza, amor e técnica, rsrsrs, Grande Abraço!!!
What a gift to have....
Wow finally a video of the italian clinics can't wait to see the one in Telese the one i saw...
okay, I just came up with an astonishing idea 💡 John Petrucci and the dudes should write music to this whole thing and call it 'Extraviganza' or something like that 😜🤘 Grrreat job Master Mangini 👍❤️
How can anybody say that this is not a musical solo? That there is no groove?
THE WORLD IS BLESSED because you were born this days years ago now you're in the only band that matters.
cool. mike mangini top drummer. my favorit..
Fera demais, Mike Mangini toca muito,além de rápido, tem uns toques diferentes na bateria.
Not my joke but someone else said it on a different Mangini video:
Why was Mike Mangini kicked out of drumming school?
There was nothing else he could learn.
damn! mangini knows everything! and i even thought he can't/won't do those metalcore like drum grooves alternating the left foot as the lead foot.. he did it like a cake walk!
Kind of has a tribal vibe at the begging...reminds me of 100,000 years....Awesome
Thank you! And it's not only his tempo, his creativity and talent and overall CHOPS are just horrid! i've been playing his stuff since I first started drumming. It was NOT a challenge in the slightest.
Thats awesome that Mike did that!
I'm not talking about his drumming abilities, I'm talking about what he brings to the table for the new DT album other than being a virtuoso on his instrument.
he's so fast it almost feels like someone just upload a sped up version of him playing lmao. seriously amazing
Yes, and don't forget his incredible hand and foot speed, he holds mutiple world records for both (for what that's worth) with the WFD organization.
Indeed. Great see someone understand what a good drummer Lars is.
I was at his first clinic in Everett Massachusetts, Freddie Gs...
Mike you're the Shaman of drums. All you need now is real cymbals... he is the first person I've ever seen flam an entire beat that happened to be extremely difficult in the first place
Grande Baterista. Tem muito estilo. Parabéns.
kit sounds great!
The genie unleashed !
On behalf of most of the world Mr. Mangini, we apologize for not giving you the recognition you deserved until now after all these years. You can sleep even better now :)
Love it ! 😀🤘
