    I trained at Westside in the early 90's BEFORE it was a total Elite Powerlifting Club. Jeff Chorpenning helped me learn box squats as well as Louie and I learned more from Louie than I had previously reading and training for 10 years. The atmosphere then was great and I have found Louie to be equally invested in an elite athlete and total beginner. He gets excited about helping people.

    I don't think people realize the impact Elitefts has had on the industry. There was NO WHERE to go besides a couple magazines to get info on strength and conditioning / powerlifting OR special equipment for the above. Dave and that team were the original "Rogue Fitness" don't get that shit twisted! When I was in high school and stumbled upon the site it was a major factor that led to me wanting to become involved in the industry today and I'm sure thousands of others can say the same

    Dave says dont alienate people , I can attest to his giving people his time.
    I visited Elitefts in 2015 because I wanted to learn a bit more than I knew about the conjugate system and j trained there twice.
    On the Sst morning session he spent around 2.5hrs with me at the desk drawing diagrams , discussing techniques and answering my questions.
    He asked me if I was going to train at Westside to which I answered yes.He told me that without Louis he wouldn't be where he was today as he'd started it all.
    I liked the openness of Dave and really appreciated his time.
    I'd like to visit again as hes in the new compound now.

    I don't see whats so hard to get? powerlifting yourself into the ground is no different then a football player or a fighter wanting to get back out on that field after a concussion or two or three. Or a racecar driver getting back into a car after a horrific crash.its a Love ,its a passion and you would die for it. everybody who is chasing a dream doesn't really stop at nothing til they achieve it.

    Thank u for this! Brings me back to when I started, actually met Dave at westside I was young punk and it was nerve racking but an experience I will never forget. Brought me to the national level and showed me what it took to be a champion and have a killer instinct. Watching this makes me want to go put gear on and get under 800lbs. Of course I'd crumble now days but lol thank u. PS please track Vogehpool down and interview him. These young guys have no clue what a fucking beast and icon that guy is

  • @MrJamesSantiago
    @MrJamesSantiago 7 років тому +96

    Dave's reasons for not being excited about lifting anymore are all the reasons why I incorporate various types of training into my routines. To me the training is what is fun. The process is what gets me excited. I enjoy a great bodybuilding pump...so I lift light when I feel like it. I enjoy athletic stuff...so I'll do some plyos, etc. If you train for "goals" then all you find is dissatisfaction. People seem to ignore the fact that you will some day lift the heaviest weight you will EVER lift in your life...Then what? Sit around and get fat and talk about your kids and grand kids? Nah bruh.... That's why you rarely see lifters putting in 20 years. Funny thing is...those who have fun training for 20 years...often smashed everyone else's "goals" LOL Find the type of training you like...and have fun. The numbers will come. And when youre done lifting heavy...remember...a good pump can be attained for the rest of your life! Keep training and stay alive! (550 squat, 350 bench, 550 deadlift....198s...I'm no slouch...but I also don't take this stuff so seriously...lighten up and have fun guys...)

    • @MrJamesSantiago
      @MrJamesSantiago 7 років тому +4

      What does the bench have to do with the deadlift? I don't grind out deadlifts at any rate. So my deads are clean, straight back, locked out and no strain at lockout. This keeps me healthy. I should be hitting 600 by year end. Like I said, I don't rush the numbers because I enjoy the training.

    Anyone remember the power mag online forum back in 2004 when Ryan Kennelly was going for the bench press world record over 1k lbs? Sgt rock was there too and a guy named Mike Wolf. Mike wolf is the guy that got me into training Westside when I was 18-19. Of course it ain't Westside it your ain't at Westside. He did invite me to train down there but I never got the chance to. Looking back I wish I would have just packed my bags and hit the road and never looked back. I didn't know back then the amount of camaraderie that comes along with a brotherhood like that. I used to call him wolfy, he broke it down and said basically as a beginning power lifter doing Westside style, cuz as a beginner the most important thing to learn is technique. He had me doing speed squats on Monday as a warm up for dead (dynamic effort) go into dead for a max single, then accessory work (he said train like a bodybuilder for sets of 6-10 mostly 6) bent over rows, sldl or Romanians, one arm rows or Pulldowns or chins and hammer curls 3 sets each. Wed was max effort bench with assistance same premise for rep scheme using JM press, or incline decline barbell or dumbbell presses and then skull crushers or pressdowns. Friday was dynamic dead for warm up then max single squat, close stance atgs for quads, pull throughs, leg extension and leg curl or reverse hypers or ghr. Sat was dynamic bench with OH press for a max triple or single then lateral raise and HANEYS (reverse upright row) for sets of six for a pump. He told me go up in 2.5-5 lb increments a week on all lifts. I was hitting prs each week for 2+ years. I was the only guy people knew in my area that could do chins at 300 lbs for sets of ten as a natural no steroids, Westside works period, even without bands or chains. I know it isn't the traditional Westside regimen but it was for a beginner. And as I said, I sailed on that shit for two years.

    Mark, it seems a lot of powerlifters have a bunch of injuries. Could you talk a little about injury prevention and whether you and other elite lifters would have trained differently back in the day to avoid these injuries. Or do you think injuries just come with the territory? And the guys who did not get injured, what was their secret or was it just luck and genetics?

      Shaun...I imagine that's 97% of peoples thinking but those genetic freaks where lifting comes easy...lifting heavy comes "easier"...and you can squat 900+ lbs and bench 600+ lbs, etc then that's when it consumes you and you make it the #1 priority...not saying that's right, it's just, you can see how it consumes some people.

    Goddamn what a great interview. I've said so many of the exact same things. It WAS impossible to stay there. I was a "junior varsity" member there for ten years so I didn't have to deal with as much of the mind fuck stuff and I was truly already mind fucked. the most true things said here was I always had to talk myself out of the car when I got there. The funny thing is that for the previous ten years my occupations in life totally revolved around life and death violence and I never had to talk myself into any violent situations. I appreciate the experience and I appreciate the little bit of time around guys like Dave and Mark. I learned a lot.

    Great interview and content, ruined by terrible microphone and annoying shaky cam. Why not place mic. and cam. on the table. It's less work and a better result. Still love your channel.

    Records are not worth screwing up your hips,knees and back.It's all about longevity.Silent Mike probably realised that and simply moved on.
