Chuck Berry was a pioneer of rock and blues guitar virtuosity. I bought his The Great Twenty-Eight CD back in the day and I still love listening to it. My favorites of his are Maybellene, Roll Over Beethoven, School Days, Rock and Roll Music, Sweet Little Sixteen, and of course Johnny B Goode.

@Sharon Burcham Chuck was from St Louis Missouri. For the last 60 + years of his life, he lived in my hometown of Wentzville. I met him a few times over the years and he was a genuine gentleman. He did a song called Back to Wentzville that was covered by George Thorogood and George did it the best. However, Chuck did so much for rock music, I don't think it will ever be properly measured.
Note: I just looked up the writing credits for Back to Wentzville and see that George actually wrote it. The song is definitely Chuck Berry influenced and in his style.

Chuck Berry was a very smart man. He wrote some incredible songs.
This song was so funny. Whenever it would come on the radio everyone would giggle and laugh. It was one of those fun songs of the 1970s that everyone loved.

Before people saw him people thought chuck was white, and they thought elvis was black. Music knows no race.
That's a new one I've never heard...my parents are of his generation (and Elvis') they have never thought that. They were more familiar with Chuck because his reputation preceded him.
Of course with Elvis the intention was for you to think he was black, that was what they were searching for. A white singer that sounded black, and they found it in Elvis.
Also back then many white groups would remake the songs by black singers (as did Elvis) and get more play than the black originator. Another thing they would do is, when they wanted to get more radio play for some of the black groups they would put flowers or colors on the cover of albums.
Same with Bobby Caldwell and Tina Marie. When their music first came out, everyone thought they were black. Until they made public appearances.

I don't know about that. My great-grandmother played this song for us as kids in the 80s. It was seen as good-hearted fun. We used to dance the polka to it. We're enjoying WAP now, we enjoyed Dingaling back then. It's all good.

I remember the 1st time I heard this song. I was about the 3rd grade and we were driving along the hwy heading to Captain D's for supper. I fell in LOVE with it... didnt know what it meant back then but I loved it.
Chuck Berry was one of the pioneers of rock n roll back in the 50s. You've got to check out some of his early songs. Well written w great guitar work. He was a character who lived a colorful life, had a couple stints in prison. He lived to a very old age dying at his home near St Louis a couple of years ago. He'd still play on occasion in bars around St Louis into his 80s.
Probably the single most influential person in all rock and roll. He drove himself in his big Caddy to all his appearances, and only took cash from the promoters before he left with it in his briefcase, holding it in one hand and a pistol in the other. Then, don't get in his car path as he went away honking the horn.

I guess Stan, his producer, knew something about the record business. Chuck didn't want to do the song. Later Stan became a legend of sorts himself managing boxers.

Chuck is probably the first guitar hero in rock and roll and was also a very naughty boy - things like smuggling minors across state lines etc - but without him you don't have the sound to come. It's no accident this is from British TV - the song went to Number One in the charts here...

My opinion, Chuck Berry's ability to integrate Country, Blues, Rockabilly is why Chuck Berry in the rankings of Rock and Roll greats will, other than Elvis, rank higher among the 11 original inductees into the Rock in Roll Hall of Fame, he was able to integrate more genres of Southern American music than anyone other than Elvis, who I think is the only person in 5 different Music HOF, Rock, Blues, Country, Gospel and Rockabilly. As I posted earlier, all of the original inductees in the Hall of Fame were in substance from the South. From Louisiana, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis, from Texas, Buddy Holly, from Mississippi, Elvis, Sam Cooke, from Georgia, Little Richard, James Brown, and Ray Charles, from Missouri, Chuck Berry, From Kentucky the two Everly Brothers.
The fusion of all the Southern Music from Blues, R&B, Country, Blue Grass, Church Music in both the rural Protestant White and Black Churches created Rock and Roll. Obviously, 6 of the original 11 inductees were Black/African American so it is 100 accurate to say that without the contributions of Black Musicians, American Rock and Roll music does not become what it is. So again, with respect to Chuck Berry, his ability in this song to go country as you stated was in fact part of his genius. Fats Domino has that ability as well, he could link Blues, R&B and Country together as well just as Chuck did.

not according to little Richard. I will agree Little Richard is on the Mt. Rushmore of rock. However, Elvis and, Chuck are literally the most named influences of every rock musician that followed after then came the Beatles, everything in rock stems from what they pioneered.

Elvis added Country, the Gospel standards from the rural Protestant Churches from both the Black Gospel Tradition (Soul) and the White Protestant tradition (Harmonies). Elvis in that context fused more genres and I think is the only person in the Rock, Country, Gospel and R&B, and Rockabilly hall of fames. Little Richard from Georgia is, along with Elvis (Missisippi) among the first Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted along with Louisiana's Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly (Texas) and Chuck Berry from Saint Louis, James Brown (Georgia), Ray Charles (Georgia), Sam Cooke (Mississsipi) and the Everly Brothers (Kentucky). What you see is basically Southern American Music that fused the culture of the South (rural White) and Black musical traditions into what is Rock and Roll. Now no doubt, the Black music tradition is fundamental to Rock and Roll, without it, it doesn't get its Blues connection and R&B connection.
Now compared to Little Richard, I think Chuck Berry will have a stronger place in history. Of the first inductees, I would put Elvis 1A, Chuck 1B and Fats Domino 1C. 2 thru 11, but I would put James Brown as the clear 2, while he is called the GodFather of Soul, he too influenced Rock and Roll. Just my views, nothing more. But Elvis's uniqueness was his ability to fuse all these different genres into one integrated form of music.

Chuck Berry did not want to record this song. His producer, Stan Hoffman, had him do it. It was a big hit. Stan Hoffman himself has an interesting history and is now in the Boxing Hall of Fame.

There's a lot of stories like that from music industry.
Elvis couldn't stand the song 'Blue Christmas' and didn't want to record it. RCA people kept bugging him to record it though so he purposely over-sang the vocals... and also got together with the background singers and they all created the background vocals that they and Elvis all thought would make the song sound ridiculous, so that RCA would never want to release it.
Of course RCA went ahead and released it anyway and it became a number one hit for Christmas song.
Elvis just shook his head & laughed. Couldn't believe it.
But artists like Elvis and Chuck were able to pull that kind of thing off where they could record a song they really I didn't necessarily want to do and it's still could become a hit

Chuck Berry is a legend. I met him in St Louis when I worked concert security. I was working backstage at a Paul McCartney concert and he stopped in to say hi. He couldn't let Paul come to his City without stopping in.
