It's not that dbz dropped in quality after the Frieza saga, it's just that duel between Goku and Frieza on a dieing planet was Legendary.
It did writing wise Saiyan till Namek saga is peak.
It did A LOT, first of all future Trunks, this could’ve gone two ways: either go back to Namek for dragon balls and revive the team or take Trunks and train in the hyperbolic time chamber, both of these could’ve solved the problem, the enormous Gap between freiza and any character other than goku was the best excuse for 70% of Namek’s story, every character was at his peak especially Vegeta, Krillin and Gohan, vegeta would eliminate any threat on his way unlike in cell saga and buu saga where he was the reason those two were problems, seriously vegeta and krillin could’ve ended that threat if they stayed consistent to their Namek character, I don’t mind Krillin but why Vegeta? The guy was an absolute alarm if there was anything that could trouble him, he would eliminate it, in Namek he was just weaker than everyone so he did his best as always, this established that he was Smart enough to NOT F*CK AROUND, Trunks on the other hand was told to wait for the Time Machine but nooo he had to fight the androids one last time and if he died that could’ve ended the series, but the plot saved him, we could assume that the androids destroyed Gero’s lab so he couldn’t make the remote to kill them so that’s understandable, buu saga on the other hand was a total DISASTER, goku allowing the freedom of Buu, handing the final battle to Goten and Trunks, gohan getting beaten and even missing the Potara was just the final straw, after that the story came back to making sense again and there are other things that I haven’t mentioned in those two arcs which makes the first two saga’s superior

I agree nothing beats the og super Saiyan 1 transformation. You can see and feel the pain Goku was feeling in that moment. Like all hope was lost and there was literally nothing that could do anymore which led to the transformation

Totally 10000000000000000% agree! Per Toriyama, he wanted to end Dragon Ball after the Freeza saga; however, he was forced to continue the story by the Publishers due to the popularity of the franchise.
Personally, Freeza Saga is the true ending of Dragon Ball story for me. Anything afterward is getting silly and repetitive, plus, kind of destroying the story and power level it established earlier in the story. Not to mention the stupid Dragon Ball S......
It’s a case of quality vs quantity… if it were to your idea of quality, then how would have things played out?… Piccolo survived Frieza’s death beam after Frieza survived the spirit bomb… & it was because Piccolo survived that they were able to summon Shenron back on Earth & resurrect everyone that Frieza & his army murdered… & it was because of the key difference in that moment that set up the future of the series, cuz if Piccolo died then nobody would be able to be brought back. The only survivors would’ve been Goku, Gohan, & Bulma at best… Gohan & Bulma at 2nd best assuming that the plot was changed to have Goku & Frieza die together on Namek in battle if the series were to end there… & worst case scenario would be only Bulma surviving cuz there’s that part where Frieza buries Goku into the ground & it erupts into a volcanic explosion & there’s a theory that Goku had actually died in that moment but bc of the wish on Earth it revived him a few minutes later… ik Bulma would’ve hated to leave Gohan on Namek to explode but if it really came down to it & Gohan left then she would’ve been forced to leave the planet because sitting there & dying in the explosion wouldn’t have saved anyone or done anything… & obv that really would’ve been the worst case scenario cuz Frieza caught on to Gohan’s plan & he wouldn’t have let that happen… unless Frieza got arrogant & decided to drag Gohan’s death out slowly like he did with Piccolo when the spirit bomb was being charged… but tbh even if that did happen he still would’ve survived just like he did after being cut in half. But again it’s all about plot so maybe he would’ve died lol. Those are my 3 theories on how shit would’ve gone down lmk what you think lmao. btw just to lyk idrk the manga version tbh I just know the anime… so idk how shit may have differed from there im speaking entirely on what ifs in the anime POV

The Frieza Saga was honestly a perfect stopping point for the series, or at least should have been the point where we shifted to focus on Gohan. Goku's story had pretty much been told at that point, and his characterization would take a noticeable downward slope after the Frieza Saga.
Frieza was the perfect final antagonist for Goku's arc, the ultimate 'Born Great' vs. the 'Nobody', the galactic tyrant who's actions had directly led to Goku being sent to Earth, and who was such a staggeringly powerful foe that he could only be defeated by the realization of a thousand year old alien prophecy. Add to that the epic showdown of the two most powerful warriors in the galaxy fighting to the death on the surface of a dying planet, and everything was set up for this to be Goku's last and greatest moment.
Now, like many people, I do enjoy the Android/Cell Saga, and I'll even admit to liking a good bit of the Buu Saga, I love Future Trunks, and I enjoy Vegeta's character growth over the series... yet if I'm being honest, while I enjoyed all of that, none of it really needed to happen.
The Androids were neat, but it didn't make sense that they were so much stronger than the likes of Frieza.
Cell was the same way, despite being massively stronger than Frieza, the scope and scale of his threat was oddly much smaller. Sure he COULD wipe out the universe (well, until Beerus was created), but that was never what was at stake, so Cell's scale as a villain was considerably less than that of Frieza. And while Buu was certainly a larger threat than Frieza was, he was also overall far less interesting as a character.
The Frieza Saga was Dragon Ball's Zenith, and truthfully in my humble opinion, it never reached the same heights again. Everything after the Frieza saga was a very slow, very gradual, but very consistent downward slide, with more and more crazy power ups and transformations getting pulled out of Toriyama's ass, to more less interesting characters, lower stakes, and Goku gradually beginning to shift into the manchild that he would become in full by Super.
Dragon Ball is a great example of what happens to a story and a series that continues to run long after the writer has lost their passion and interest. You can even start to see Toriyama's writing begin to slip after the Frieza Saga, things start making less sense, there's less satisfying build up and pay offs, characters are mostly shunted to the wayside and forgotten. While I adore pretty much all of Z... it is absolutely my belief that the series should have ended with Frieza
Agreed Cell saga has way more flaws. The Super saiyan form alone was ruined from there on. We could have used more backstory in the Namek saga tough. Origin wise maybe an unique side story.

Honestly. Goku’s “YOU FOOL!!” To Frieza was just….like wow dude.
Goku spared him like how he did Piccolo and Vegeta, and Frieza tarnished it by trying to kill Goku! Goku saying “You Fool” to Frieza was more like he didn’t want to kill him, but he’s now forced to because Frieza didn’t take the chance to live.
100% agree with you on this one, tried to explain this to my friends who also grew up watching it. The Frieza vs Goku fight is simply the best, like you said it never feels like Goku is too outmatched, save for one or two episodes when Frieza powers up to 50%. People just love that Gohan storyline and it clouds their judgement, I guess for a lot of them Gohan's growth/aging mirrored their own. I feel like I was 6 turning 7 when I watched the Saiyan saga, then by the time I was like 9 years old the Buu saga was out, Gohan had outgrew me. I was always a Vegeta fan after the Saiyan Saga and the Cell arc did give me a lot of cool Vegeta moments, but I still think the Frieza saga is the best arc and the Goku vs Frieza fight is the best in animated history.

100 precent agreed. Saiyan till Freeza saga is peak. Obviously the super saiyan form is not explained well. But in the Cell saga everyone turned ssj instead of getting stronger in a unique side story.

Idk bruh, Kid Buu didn’t have the personality but he blew up Earth AND was bout to blow up the afterlife. Easier to hate Frieza as a villain but Kid Buu probably the scariest. Like u said I hope they don’t try to redeem him. If anything, make him a god of destruction and leave him for the finale. Beerus was ok allowing Frieza to blow up planets and what not. Now he has the power AND personality to be great god of destruction…for another universe.

People hated my take for the longest time. I'm sorry, but a once extinct race coming back to fight the emperor of space and unlock a new form while fighting on a planet where every character is contributing is just so good. Let's not forget the Ginyu Force which are a great callback to the original Dragon Ball fights where power wasn't just a level it was about technique and unique quirks. The Androids were cool, Cell was lame, and Buu was boring. This was where the series peaked and DBS studied it when introducing the multiple universes. The only thing I can criticize DBZ for is making planet destroying easy because there's no counter to it, and since every character grows in power Earth just becomes a super fragile battleground which makes the Cell and Buu sagas silly since they could just destroy the planet.
Goku vs Frieza is my favorite fight. The anime one is ass. But the manga version is so under appreciated. And although I have quite a lot of problems with the Android and Buu Sagas, I do think the Buu Saga deserves far more credit than it gets

Fighting was more brutal in frieza saga.
Even though you knew somehow someway goku was going to win, i could not fathom how lol once i seen the kaioken wasn't shit, i was like how is he going to win this. In the saiyan saga, it was a collected effort to beat vegeta but vs frieza, no one was remotely strong enough to aid him at all. That was terrifying to me. And at that point, freiza was only using half his power. The feeling of doom was so overwhelming in that battle. I also love how frieza had a reputation throughout the universe. He wasn't a created player type of foe like cell. He had reputation, a universal wide fear of him. He was adolf hitler and blackbeard the pirate had a 3sum with the devil and birthed an all powerful sadistic conqueror alien child. To pick this saga as your favorite tells me that you're a very mindful fan but i love ssj2 teen gohan too much so android saga my favorite. Also the power progression in that saga fascinated tf outta me

@@OmoMustardAndroid Saga and Cell Saga are used interchangeably and are much more intrinsically connected. Saiyan Saga leads to Frieza saga but they are very separate
Cell has an effect on the Android Saga part before his official introduction. There is no clear divide between when the Cell Saga starts and the Android ends.
The Saiyan saga has an official ending and Frieza has absolutely no effect on the saga until his arc begins. They are very separate

I rhink what partially caused a decline in quality after the Freeza arc was because later arcs simply had little to no connection to the prior ones. In the Saiyan arc not only do we learn the huge revelation that this monkey kid we have been following around for years is actually of an alien warrior race of space pirates, but we also learn that his greatest rival at the time from the previous Piccolo arcs was also an alien. Naturally these ideas would be expanded upon seamlessly throughout the Saiyan and Namek arcs. And throughout the Namek arc it further delved in the previous villain's character, making Vegeta a much more dynamic character. And then there's the revelation of his boss Freeza and his forces. Not to mention Freeza is arguably one of the best villains in fiction, let alone the best villain in all of DB, in my opinion. And he was the catalyst that actually started the events of the entire series by having wiped out most of the Saiyans. It's these interconnections that really gave us such rich lore in the Saiyan and Namek arcs.
Thats just one of many reasons why those two arcs are the peak of DBZ, in my opinion. I also hated the idea that human technology could make androids that were even more powerful than the galactic emperor and Super Saiyans.
All DBZ Kai is is just A remaster/ remix of DBZ. And it's edited to cut out filler

Frieza saga would have been the best ending to Dragon Ball. Android saga is forced, they want me to believe that Frieza the emperor of space with cybernetic enhancements became little to nothing stronger but a couple of weak human twins with cybernetic enhancements became out of the blue stronger than the legendary super saiyan and also the super saiyan itself becomes just a mere transformation everybody can obtain and it becomes even more ridiculous when in Buu saga Goten and Trunks just casually transform like it's the most simple and bs thing in the world. The other sagas after Frieza just don't make any sense imo. And don't even make me start with the senseless mess that are GT and especially Super...
They should have gave the other Z fighters unique powers and story. Not destroy the story with some stupid time machine and heart virus kills a legendary super saiyan really? Some android from earth kill a legendary alien that blows planets?? That scales up to or beyond star level ?
The only thing i disagree with here is saying SSJ is thr best unlock.

the lead up, the "here it comes" from beerus, the spirit bomb getting pushed back and actually "killing" goku, only for him to appear in UI, in that classic SSJ pose, but instead of yelling in rage, raising his head in pure calm.

Doesnt even compare writing wise. Even the Super saiyan form was not explained well enough. In Super they did try to lay some base to justify ultra instinct but the story couldnt execute it. Wich made it some cheap asspull. The concept is original tough best form in Super so far. But again does not compare to the buildup we had even back from og Db seeing Goku progress all the way to the legendary Super saiyan. Because of the many flaws after the Namek saga. Yes even the cell saga made the show into a parody of ass pull forms with barely any story to back them up. This escalated even more in Super. To the point where many fans dont feel a thing when a new form drops compared to Super saiyan. People dont know how much of a big deal this form is. It made Z so popular in Japan it made Z and og Global. Not only that it inspired other anime. Super is not doing that in fact the opposite. Even die hard z fans dont like Super.

I wouldn’t say the Frieza Saga is the best in DBZ, I’ll have to give that title to the Saiyan Saga. While the Frieza Saga has great moments overall it just has way too much needless padding, Goku is far too absent from the story for his final showdown with Frieza to feel earned and it’s where the importance of martial arts begins to decline in the story instead the fights coming down to who is stronger.
Good point about the connections within the namek arc although the android saga does connect to Dragon ball with the red ribbon army

If Cell and Buu were absolutely unredeemable trash then sure but other than that, this sentiment makes no sense. There were still many many lose ends at the end of the Namek Saga and although the writing wasnt as tight in the Cell and Buu saga, they BOTH had higher highs than the Namek Saga and BOTH had better endings than Namek Saga
Namek VEGETA was the guardian of Earth at the end of the Frieza saga... Let that sink in. Cell saga is a much more natural end to Z but Buu is definitely the best ending position. All the character arcs are finished as everyone is there perfect version
Actually Toriyama did intend to end the story with Frieza. But dragon ball was so popular that he was told to continue, so we got Cell (which was intended to end with Gohan) then Buu. The future arcs certainly aren't bad and I really like them though

Stopping after the frieza saga is stupid it’s characters like Gohan who was built up to be the next strongest warrior and his potential was shown multiple times it’s obviously they was building him up for something. stopping it without seeing anyone progress like vegeta and gohan etc would have made the show mid imo. but I think the cell saga is the best I don’t really like the frieza saga imo that part when Goku and frieza fought was bad up until super saiyan. I’ll take the namek saga and early frieza saga with gohan vegeta krillin piccolo over the later on moments. I feel like the flaws started to happen during the buu saga.

Frieza is iconic just as well as the Saiyan arch.. As much as I will always look at that story as the best.. Cell in my opinion was the best villain overall because of his development and his backstory having the technique of all the Z their strength no physical weakness as perfect Cell not only that he was way more powerful than Frieza.. And almost unlimited stamina.. Frieza's final form was energy consuming because of raw rage and overpowered ki blast.. Cell was able to increase, speed without losing any a great amount of stamina.. This is what Goku should have mastered but because of plot hole Gohan was able to perfect the technique.. overall Cell was the best Villain. Iconic love for Frieza
