Joey Santiago is the most unappreciated guitarist of the 80s/90s, possibly of all time. He never tries to steal the show, just pumps up already massive songs with plenty of extra juice.

      @jdoe27 4 роки тому +6

he never says a word and yet his guitar playing can just convey so much. You get such a clear sense of who is (or his persona as a musician I suppose). Really an incredible band all around

He said he overdid it on this record because he was criticized in some guitar magazine. Kind of shut them down.

@@dalehensley7453 lmfao what a badass. Guaranteed the magazine complained about his two-notes only playing(which I love, he does so much with so little) so here he does some crazy tapping style playing to shut them up. I love the pixies! Joey is a guitar God.

The two Memphis': there's an Elvis Presley song called "Trying to get to you", and Frank Black's letter goes to Egypt. Pixies songs are so full of references, but never feel pretentious. Just full of love for good rock music.

Black Francis at his dorkiest and cutest and damn if it doesn't hit right in the feels.
The Pixies' whole sound was rooted in dynamics and the dynamics between the abrasive guitars and the almost nursery rhyme-esque silliness of the lyrics really elevates this into something most musicians couldn't hope to write.
    "Sailing, and I saw her
And I pleaded: 'why have you come so far?'
    And she said:
    Trying to get to you
How I've tried to get to you
    Trying to get to you"

For improved effect: always play the amazing Palace of the Brine first. That's when Letter to Memphis will really kick in.
If you can afford it, hang on a bit longer for the soothing sounds of Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons. All of these are great songs in their own right, but the sequencing (even better than on Bossanova) makes them even more addictive!

    Lyrics:
The day since I met her
    I can't believe it's true
    She came here from Memphis
    Across the ocean sailing
And I saw her and I pleaded
Why do you come so far?
And she said, " Trying to get to you
How I tried to get to you
    Trying to get to you"
    I'm sending a letter
I'll send it right to you
    I'll send it to Memphis
    I know that someday
Everything I needed and I wanted
Used to be that my head was haunted
And all these sirens they make me mad
And all this violence it brings me down
I feel strong, I feel lucky
    Trying to get to you
Said I'm going to get to you
    Trying to get to you

This song. THIS SONG!! I'm a bass man at heart, but the guitar in this tune really resonates in me. I remember the first time I heard Letter to Memphis and everything just *clicked* It felt so familiar yet fresh. It was as if it had always been in my life, but I'd somehow only just realised it. Letter to Memphis makes me want to get back into playing in a band and it's one song where I'd be happy with the guitar being the main focus because it's that good. What an amazing piece of music! I find it difficult to describe that deep drive it gives me. Love it!

Many regard 'Teenager of the year' as his masterpiece. It came out in 94, even now I listen to it as much 'Pixies'. It's a sprawling album of truly epic proportions which refuses to age. However, his other band FB and the Catholics were fantastic and just heavily under - rated. 'Show Me Your Tears, 'Pistolero' and 'Dog In The Sand' are all mighty fine albums. They were also a great live act. I think FB/BF is one of the most innovative musicians of the last few decades!! Enjoy his music Joshua!!

+william Cooper I'd say the closest thing to the Pixies is Nirvana but actually that's not even 95% true, Kurt Cobain I believe was influenced by the bass and straight-forward drum beat structure the Pixies often use to drive the verse (Kurts vocal dynamics as far as singing often and screaming when necessary seem to be Pixie influenced) ...I really like Black Francis' lyrics (especially on this album since they're a little more down to earth (the abstract is cool too)....I remember reading that Black was a fan of David Lynch films (and probably still is considering post-pixies Mulholland Dr.(this and Citizen Kane are my all time favorite films) and Inland Empires release in the 2000's. The line in Debaser: "Got me a movie, ho ho ho ho, slicing up eyeballs..." is an Eraserhead reference if I'm not mistaken (they also cover "in Heaven Everything Is Fine' which was written for Eraserhead (by Lynch if I'm not mistaken...)

i read comments after a track and somehow feel pride that I was the only mothertrucker that had this bands CD's playing in 1992-ish when both were pretty much new.
Gotta tell ya It was something special one recognised as a college age dude when listning to their music nack then when it was newly created. They were nowwhere close to famous in most of the US and actually outside of their home town had a better following in the UK.
They never watered down for radio. It woulda been impossible to tone down Joey and as to Black Francis well how does one ask to change or be more of an "accesible" musically when the best descriltion of his voice and style was best put by Bill Wolfe of Car Stereo Review as him being " the best damn screamer since the original Statr Treks Ensign Chekov".
Every fukin track in "Fool the World" in French hee hee! Bossanove, Doolittle and Surferosa I played and played and coulda been several years since last hearing hearing but when doing so again with this UA-cam video as an example the recall is there, was there in the area of the psyche our good God set aside for those out of the blue, hair on the neck tingling fukin scream alongs acompanied by what one could only struggle to put into words but I use "haunting" life altering musical check when Kim Deal's beautiful perhaps in my opinion the most beautiful sound one associates as humanly voiced ever to enter our (mine) conscious mind ( proof you say fuk you run, dont walk, buy all the Breeders albums and play one by one till you here her opening lyrics say to you, with her bass guitar along as a duet, " If I saw you now... could I look in your eyes...Do you think of Me.. like I dream of you......") so engrained are they still today at 45 yrs old in my psyche.
Yes psyche and since I dont fuck around I am a serious man that word came naturally and easilly I might add so much so I had to look up its definition just to be sure. And thats how I close, with pride having lived this song in real time when it first forcefully wafted into the surrounding ether around me, in me it will remain unchanged impossible to do so I come to realise again and againyears after years and gratefull to them and to you original listeners and the new listners as well for just listening each taking what they wanted from this song which is your own , for me deeply personal and the source of pride.
How so you might ask, and like I said I am a serious man rin don't walk pick up your Webster Collegiate Dictionary and look the definition of ..... you lazy fucks I guarantee you think you know but you dont know the complete definition and that is a glimpse into your own psyche Im afraid.
    Tities!
