How to renew a radiator valve without draining down.

- Scared of draining down the heating system? Fear of airlocks. There is often not enough pipework to use a freezer kit, so if you are not faint hearted and feel confident, watch on.
Buy a decent Drayton valve here. amzn.to/3hY4s43

Excellent Al, I've been a plumbing and heating engineer for almost 15 years. I still learn a thing a or two from watching your uploads. You're a top man, I hope both Jan and yourself are doing well. 👍
Thanks Ray we are both keeping well. All the best to you and the family.
Thanks Al you just saved us £250 and it was great to have a go and an amazing feeling when it worked. Thank you so much!! for making this. With everything going up in price at the moment, this was such a relief not to have to fork out to have replaced for a small chrome bathroom radiator in the downstairs loo. Thank you for warning about all the moments when the heart beats a little quicker. I stayed calm even when the nut didn’t initially grip and then all went to plan. 👨🔧👍
No problem.
Having decorated the room and removed and painted the radiator, I reconnected the radiator and when turning the rad valve back on the top of the brass valve snapped off. So new rad valve required. Having seen how the water splashed up the wall in you video I hung polythine sheeting up on the wall, loads of old towls around the pipe and then followed your instructions. Success, no dirty water over wall or floor and a new trv fitted to rad as an upgrade. Thank you Dereton33.
No problem well done Kara
Love watching your videos, followed you for years, extremely helpful videos, you can't buy experience 🙂
Thanks Brian
Thanks Brian
Thanks for sharing! A really helpful video, explaining the "why", the "what" and the "how", especially the hose fall back procedure. Feel more confident about doing it myself! Cheers!
Glad it was helpful!
Like these videos, good to brush up and see how other people do things.
For people thinking of quick changes, be careful, drain off excess pressure first via bleed valve.
Also I would never do this unless the floor does NOT have carpets.
I.e. kitchen or bathroom.
Thanks for the tips!
Your garden is look fantastic as always Al 👍
Thank you kindly. Cheers PB.
I’m going to show this video to my plumber tomorrow !
Ha ha thanks.
Brilliant, thank you for the information and demonstration.
Cheers 🍻 regards, Chris.
No problem 👍
LOVE watching your videos please keep them up.
Thank you! Will do!
Perfectly, most patiently shown and explained.
Compliments.
👍 👌
Thanks a lot 😊
Hi Al, and Jan 😰 this gave me a laugh , fastest thumb in the south mate, your a star act, but a great practical demo , many thanks for another great tip, stay safe guys, best wishe's, Stuart uk
Glad you enjoyed it. All the best Stuart.
Useful quick flip tip. Thanks
No problem!
Have done that with isolation valves to at times if had to quite daunting Al
Sure is Ben.
Thanks just what I was looking for.
Glad I could help
Quickest hands in Kent 👍
ha ha.
brilliant video,
Many thanks!
Nicely done
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Al. I have some of those rad vavles that have a drain off spout which also have like a 'lock nut'' and square spigot on the end to open the drain. Im not certain of the correct procedure to open and close these correctly. Are you supposed to wind back the lock nut then turn the spigot to open the drain then the reverse to close? I noticed a little leakage when I did drain off some water even though both the lock nut and spigot seemed to be tight. Could you do a vid on these valves, please?
I will do a video for you.
Great vid
Thanks Matthew.
@07:37 Cut pipe can be really sharp. I'd recommend a rubber or leather glove. I have thick skin. Literally and metaphorically. Non cut/bloodied thumb up, Al.
Ha ha thanks Loafer.
@@dereton33 loafer owns and runs RHINO PLUMBING SERVICES, they are thick skinned and charge a lot !!!! 😁😁😁
There goes my money again... LOL. Great video--keep them coming.
Always!
Thanks Al - might it be worth taking the pressure out of the system by bleeding it out so the force of water isn't as strong or is it not worth the effort?
Its not worth it.
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
I see why it’s not for the faint hearted when that dirty water splatted on your wall towel and all lol!
Dont worry it cleans off.
I'm not a plumber and might be wrong, but judging from the colour of the water on the wall Wouldn't be better to drain the system and put an inhibitor into that system?
As I've said I am not plumber (work in welding btw) and need to put a new radiator on the wall, this is why I watch a lot of that stuff recently. Have a few questions as well.
1.What is better to use ptfe tape or jointing compound for (new) olives, inserts.
2. Do I need turn my boiler off when draining the system. (Have to drain the system because radiator pipes don't have l/s and trv on just end cups.
If you find a minute to answer these questions I would well appreciate it.
Thanks
That demo was just to show you how to do it. the system got flushed shortly after to show another video. 1 Olives jointing compound and inserts nothing. 2 Best to turn the boiler off before any plumbing work is carried out on the system.
Ooh livin' dangerously there, Al! Shoot from the hip, that's what I say! 😁
Ha ha too true.
If you've got wallpaper you could prop up an old umbrella to stop the dirty water gushing up the wall - or get the wife to hold up a towel.
Great idea.
Hi Al,
If I can ask you a question. I have an old Drayton radiator control knob that I need to replace. Will a Drayton TVR control Knob be okay, or will I have to replace the full valve aswell? I tried to replace it with a Danfoss but the knurled ring wouldn't screw on it seemed to be the wrong size.
Any advice you can give me will be appreciated, Cheers
It should be ok, but even if it is not you will still have to change the complete valve so no harm trying.
Thanks for informative video. I have a question, will the water be hot if the heating has been on? Do i need to turn the heating off for a while before i try this? Thanks
Yes, correct. Turn it off at least 2 hours before
thank you! @@dereton33
enjoyed your video, well explained.1 problem thou with me ,is that i have rads that were installed 1976 and i have got 2 pipes going in 1 side (to turn on/off) and what a plonker i was,i cut off pipe that goes inside the rad so i need to renew and flush/clean all the rads in the house, have you any advice, thanks ,mark. Reading Berkshire.uk
No pipes go into the rad they stop at the rad valve. Just renew the bit of pipe you cut off, drain the whole system and clean out all the rads one by one.
@@dereton33 hi,just been watching your video again, sorry what i should of said was i;ve danfoss duel entry valve 1 side, after watching your vid dont you need to put ptf tape on the threads?, thanks mark,ps love the dog!
Can you give us any tips or websites to show us how to edit you tube videos please.⭐️
I use one called VSDC it is free and very easy to use. I will get around to showing how to use it on a video soon.
Hi Al
Can I ask a question I have a leaking valve on down stairs rad .was thinking of doing your quick flip method .should I shut off all rads on the system to reduce flow when I disconnect old valve from
Pipe .my system is pressurised 1bar approx
Thanks for all your useful knowledge
Martin
Yes, absolutely
Hi mate the opposite side of my radiator don’t work so it would be the thermostat side that you turned off first can I do the same fix as you done just with the thermostat side instead ? Thanks
Yes you can
I checked this video again to do with the statement if you have a Combi no need to drain off, issue is if its a bungalow with the pipe work in loft dropping into rooms it pours out, it did with mine.
There will always be a bit in the pipework. Anyway you should only do this as a quick swop as shown. I meant as no need to drain off in that you do not have a roof tank to drain.
@@dereton33 okay thanks, it was about 15m of pipework in the loft. Combi install.
..and you can bung the expansion tank and cap the vent if you have an open system.
Not been too reliable in my lifetime as a plumber.
When replacing a radiator, can the thermostatic valve be fitted at either end?
No only one end.
the top of my valve is missing the plastic top so to turn on the radiator I use a pliers I noticed it leaks a little near the top
Is this because the cap is missing or do I need to replace the valve?
Its the packing gland leaking. Easy fix.
I have a towel radiator and the valves are at the bottom but on one side (where you balance it) its rusty just above and the white paint is flaking off. I loosened the 2 thread's enough to put some PTFE tape on and it seems to have stopped the leak. Shall I just sand the rust off and paint it, or change everything?
Try sanding the rust off first.
@@dereton33 OK thanks. The PTFE didn't stop the leak so I changed the left fitting. It doesn't match (it's chrome), but it's not leaking now. I'll sand and paint the rust. Strange how it went like that so quickly...about 2 or 3 years. I put PTFE on both threads, to be sure! I'll check the balancing soon. But it's getting hot now. I'm a handyman but try to avoid plumbing as water is dangerous in the wrong places. This is my own property. I'm in Wandsworth London.
Someone told me that on an f&e system you can plug the feed and expansion pipes with bungs and this air locks the system so you won't get much leakage. Not tried it myself though. It seems like if you are ok with getting into the loft then draining down is not much harder.
Yeh that can work. One thing I found out is don't have two open ends on the rad tails otherwise you lose the vacuum.
Never worked for me. Always let by.
Bunging the f&e tank works a treat for me
Never found a bung the will stay in.
Is it possible to have all radiator valves removed, 11 radiators and put on new thermostatic valves without draining the system? Or because there's so many and the time it takes that the system must be drained anyhow?
I would drain it all if you are renewing them all.
If this was a open vent system wouldn't it be easier to bung the two pipes in the f&e tank, depressurise the radiator in question and as such vastly reduce any pressure/flow in that section of the CH system before changing the valves?
You can do that, but this saves a trip up into the loft and the hassle of blocking up the cold feed and vent.
Maybe you could do a video on replacing a thermostatic valve Alan
Great suggestion!
Quick question... I'm guessing you would have to bleed the air out the system afterwards? How would you do that? And is it just the one rad u would have to bleed? Kind regards
It would just be the one rad .
@@dereton33 thank you for the fast reply.. have subbed🙌
Hi. My radiator has corroded. I’ve turned the ordinary valve off. But the TVR only goes to the frost mode and not zero
That is still off on that selection.
Can you freeze the pipe with an ice pack from the freezer?
Errr NO.
Just put a new pump on the central heating but the radiators down stairs are warm not hot.
Balance the heating system. I have videos on how to do it.
@@dereton33 Thank you...
Great video but some cardboard to protect the wall would have looked better.
Just wanted to show how meassey it can be.
Nice one Al......👍
I forgot to ask but do you live on the coast as I'm sure I keep hearing seagulls in your videos......😀
Yes I do
Worth a try in a bathroom.
Certainly.
Shocking mess not all advice is good advice defy not a sealed system I would advise any1 not to do this btw I'm a heating engineer in his 50's
I'm an heating engineer in my 70`s. It can be done. The drain your heating system is the long way, with possible airlocks, the inhibitor would want refilling and the job can take most of the day, and if you are paying someone charge you for the time. (A mess what is he on about)
@@dereton33 were did i say it cant be done? . I said its shocking advice and at your age u should know better. Not all attention is good attention.
Should jab took the pressure off lol😂
