Good review, balanced, insightful and relevant. As an owner of a 2019 cb1000r of 9 months covering 3,000 miles I can say that you are right in describing this as a gentleman's hooligans' bike possessing as it does low /mid range torque that will give you a smile in town / B & A roads keeping up and overtaking with ease allied to a blistering acceleration from 6k+ that will demand your attention and focus as you quickly exceed 70 mph and beyond rarely needing to go beyond 9k but will allow you to go to the redline at 12k. I find the steering to be precise and confidence inspiring being stable and holding the line when cornering `and allowing me to change direction with ease at speed whilst offering excellent control filtering / undertaking U turns. Need less to say but I would recommend this bike to you and anyone else who wants to enjoy motorcycling in the knowledge they have a premium motorbike beneath them which many will admire its looks.
@@mrtalky460 My first bike was a Kawasaki Ninja 650 which I enjoyed riding and after 12 months felt that I wanted a bike that offers to me more - safety aids 2 channel braking (apply the front brake the back brake is applied as well to a lesser degree and vice versa) power modes, the ability to pull away more easily from traffic. What I found is that the Honda CB1000R for me was easier to ride than the Ninja 650 - longer wheel base and extra weight wet 215kg vs 195kg meant it was more stable at speed but due to the better front wheel set up and the excellent ride by wire throttle it was also easier to maneouvre at low speed as well. I believe that the cb650r would be as the cb1000r would be for touring as you can use both a tank bag and panniers the key difference being that the 1000r would have more power and I suspect less draining over longer distances (I have not ridden a Honda CB650R). You definitely should try the Plus model with the quick shifter - its amazingly fast. The fly screen actually does make a difference too. I have 6k miles on mine with the full Akro system - that gives it another 10hp and drops the weight about 20lbs too.
Still doesn’t have a lot of the stuff much cheaper bikes have like cruise control and cornering 6 axis ABS and traction. Honda traction control only works is a straight line. It pisses my off because I want the Honda bot both the MT09 and MT10 offer more for less. It’s rly hard to consider Honda in 2021 when competitors are offering more. And it breaks my heart because the Honda is the most beautiful bike from the big 4 only challenged by Ducati which cost 5k more dollars. Such a beautiful bike just needs to get up to snuff on its tech offerings like Yamaha is doing and doing it for less money.

Nice to find someone who agrees with my views on this bike - many reviewers don't seem to like it. I love the quality, smoothness of the engine, gorgeous paint, sheer rideability. Seat is pretty good for a couple hours riding, but cuts into your thighs a bit after 2hrs. I don't get the squirmy front end, but then the grip on the roads around KC is so low to begin with that you can't tell. Its also capable of just bimbling along in 6th down to about 25mph and then just pull away until its going fast enough that a bit of pee may come out. It'll pull outrageous wheelies, if theres enough grip in the road surface too (again, ref low grip on roads around KC). Are you on a diet? No cake again.... 😀
I think many don’t WANT to like it, because it doesn’t have crazy power numbers or all the electro wizardry. But as a 1 litre UJM, it’s absolutely brilliant. The squirmy front end was entirely due to that awful Dunlop front tyre. On mine with the Bridgestones it came on and then the Avons it’s got now, the front end sticks like ferret poo to a Velcro blanket.

Lovely German roads on a Honda, I'm so envious mate. Horn switch is an IQ test and shows the Japanese have a sense of humour. Cheers, from a country where nothing works and we all just laugh at it!
Great review Andy and this might just be the perfect bike for you. Many dismiss Hondas as characterless but after a while, having a bike where everything just works (and keeps on working) has its own charm. I think I’m now on my 15th bike and every time I get another Honda it’s like meeting up with an old friend. Don’t worry about the indicator switch issue by the way, it takes about 2 days to reprogram your brain after which it makes perfect sense and you start to question why every other manufacturer doesn’t do the same.

Cheers! My pleasure. I've since bought one myself and still find the size pretty comfortable. I have changed the bars for flatter and wider ones though. Video of this is on the way.
There is a Honda garage in Chiang Rai, where I live, and your CB1000R video I watched earlier had me going into the dealer to have a good look at it. Your demonstration here of the roll-on acceleration in top from 50 kph has proved to me that talk of the bike's weak low-end is nonsense. I really don't need this much top speed in Thailand, but as I illustrated earlier, my B-King's tractability is something I miss. Pulling away from low revs in top gear is so civilised.
That's why I think it's always so important to try things out for yourself. So many reviewers have said things about the 'weak' low end, but they've probably just ridden a Superduke R or a Tuono and their opinions are way biased! I've never ridden a straight four (except for the MT10) that had so much pull form the low end. And beautifully smooth in the delivery too.
It feels even lighter than it is, which is the most unbelievable bit. Roughly the same weight as my FZ1 was, but much easier to move around and very nimble once you get used to it. 👌
@@AndyManCam I have a feeling I'm going to be tempted. I aim to test the CB650R, too, as they have a demonstrator. I imagine the 1000 will feel MUCH more tractable. It certainly looks a lot better.
I was tempted by the 650 as it didn’t look physically much smaller. I only tried the 1000 though! Will be interesting to hear what you think between the two. Though i can’t imagine that any 650 in-line four could feel as delightfully tractable as the thou! It’s wonderful!
@@AndyManCam I am sure you're right. I'll let you know. The tractability of litre-plus inline fours is something big twin fans don't understand. I like both big twins and big fours.
Very nice bike, that 4 cylinder sounds great even with the stock can, bet it would really sing with an aftermarket pipe. *Beep!* ‘cuse me, 😆 Excellent ride & review!
I enjoy your test rides ! I guess it’s down to personal preference but I thought you were more enthusiastic about the 900 tracer ? That bike is more to my liking although you can’t dismiss the quality of a Honda. A Crossrunner is also a contender for me.
You'Re right, I was really enthusiastic about the Tracer at the time. Had I been in a position to buy something new at that point, I definitely would have gotten one. I've since just completely gone off screens and fairings. Naked all the way for me! Plus the CB is a little bit less common and the fuelling is considerably smoother!!
When I took the demo bike out for a run I felt the gearing was all wrong, 6th gear felt like 4th I was always looking for more gears, the bike is ok on a smooth road but when you go on a bumpy road the suspension was just to firm , the quick shifter was ok going down the box but very jerky going up unless you short shifted, agree with you on the fuelling it was awful, in sport and a bit better in standard mode. Thanks for your review.
I really enjoy the gearing on this bike. Feels just right for me. But each to their own eh! I wouldn't say that the fuelling is awful in any mode. In fact after a few thousand miles in Sport mode, you can actually use it smoothly. Just needs good and precise throttle control. I didn't bother with the quickshifter but I do agree that the suspension is too harsh. At the front it's far smoother with way less compression damping , but at the rear it'S a lost cause! New shocker needed!
Nice vid mister - and confirms all my thoughts about the CB1000R: quality quality quality. If I could stretch to a second bike I reckon this would be the one. Enjoy it!
I love Honda, my commuter is a CBF1000A, superb doing type bike. Certainly commuting. And yes, I still do the same with the horn. Usually at lights. 🤣👍👍🤟 ride safe
I kept wondering what the light on the side of the display was for. Turns out it can do many things, shift light, ride mode indicator, efficiency indicator (which is what I suspected) and maybe more. Pretty kewl bike tbh.
And i almost immediately switched all of the functions off because it’s a cheap and annoying nonsense feature! 😂 I just have the Shift light on now, but then again who’s looking at the dash when they’re nailing it up through the gears?!
Great Video 👍 Classy rider and Thourough Test. Kudos 🙂 So happy now, I bought a brand new 2019 Red one last week from a dealer in Wisconsin. Got it on sale $10,000, down from $13,000. 🙂. I also have a yellow Monkey on order. I am new so I will start my learning journey on the Monkey. The logo HONDA: "WE MAKE DREAMS" is True 👍 . They make dream machines. Here in the U.S. Their cars are giving a Run for VW 😉
If you liked the CB1000R, consider trying the Yamaha XSR 900 (or MT-09). Same qualities as the Honda, but with an absolute lovely 3 zylinder. Tested mine at Dumke und Lütt in Duvenstedt, lovely chaps.
Here in Canada, all of the Japanese motorcycle dealerships won't even let you have a test ride, period. It's rubbish. Yamaha Canada have their annual "Demo days" where they tour around the country to various dealerships with a truckload of bikes. So you have one opportunity, on one day to ride a few bikes, and that's it.
I’m afraid i couldn’t say as I’ve never sat on a Striple RS. I think the Striple is far tighter though. The CB is, on Paper at least, a bigger bike and likely more about the size of the Speed triple. The position is quite agressive, for a naked, with a bit of pressure going on to the wrists. But this pays dividends in the twisties!
I had a cb1100 for 2 years and the horn - indicator light swap took me about a year to become familiar with. I have no idea why honda do that 🤦♂️. Though, my current bike is not a honda and when I purchased it, I had the same problem in reverse, but getting used to the "regular" placement took all of a month 🙂
Awesome bike! I also eyeball this one to replace my black naked Suzuki GSF 1250 some day. But: will the money really improve the joy in biking and riding experience?
I've got a soft spot for these...and the Katana...especially the rear and rear 3/4 view I think they look great. I'm sure the front end feel can be tailored to suit. That said, do they do anything much better than what you've got? I doubt it.
I'm not an expert, but if I had to guess the flashing light is shift indicator. Possibly because the bike is being broken in? But I've also heard that Honda engines are broken in by the factory...just a guess. Beautiful bike though, ty for the review.
Honda reliability with the looks that a bike should have as opposed to the ‘transformer’ style of many. I’ve always appreciated the aesthetics of the beast, but my lack of moto will power & now retired persons funding has stopped me from throwing a leg over. Maybe something for me when touring on the GS becomes a little too much for the body. Cheers Andy. 👍🏍😷🇦🇺
What kills me is an MT-09 comes with more features like cruise control and 6 axis cornering ABS….. yet Honda for 30% more cost can’t even give you the stuff that is basic for most bikes in this category o bike.
As they say, it's a Honda! The Japanese manufacturers don't wine and dine the bike media like the European manufacturers do so inevitably they get glossed over, but if your a one bike owner the Japanese are still the more reliable, practical, efficient, cost effective, etc but at the expense of so called character (aka not built properly) and exotica. Like others have said, have a look at MrFish.
I'm watching this on 5K iMac and should say that 4k from Sony had a better video quality. Sound is ok too, under 140km/h speeds. After 140 there is a sound clipping appears.
Since you're doing quite a bit of touring: Have you considered the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX? That's the bike I'm eyeballing right now. Could be for you too.
@@AndyManCam I'd probably be the same as you...I'm 6'2" with 35 in inseam...so far, seems like the speed triple would fit me the best but not sure...are you comfortable on the CB1000?
I agree, but in a good way. I really like what they’ve done to create a modern looking bike but with a classic style. I’m ok without wind protection though. Like the wind in my hair!
You had me at "toight.....😳😂....I like my 2014...it's a jam up value for performance while keeping me from going over the edge....🤔😎yeah...I'm 60...😉...not for the rainy commute...a full fender is better for that...but overall...a good choice...
I challenge you to try the MT09 without hitting the horn instead of the indicators too. Don’t buy one though. The riding position is shit. As is the headlight. The quickshifter on the CB plus model is pretty good but I thought it was a bit vibey for an line 4.
Yeh nice bike similar to your FZ1 and you hear good and bad thinks about it. Andy are you planning on test riding all the current nakeds out there before you buy? . I'm currently vlogging around Scotland on an old SV1000n absolutely love this bike and I suppose you want a bike with a bit of character. Enjoyable vid as always sir👍
Hi! AMC . Beautiful bike . Are you going to try Suzuki Gsx 1000 and Kawasaki z1000. I heard Yamaha are starting to save money on quality. Rust and such. Ttfn.........EBC
Hey Andy. Nice video. What's your take on the Sena with Camera? I am considering getting a GoPro for some light recording, few times a year. I already have a Scala Freecom on my helment. Would you recommend switching to the Sena or getting a Gopro on the side? Thanks mate ! V.
Thanks Charly! For light recording and subtlety I’d say the Sena is great. Of course it has no stabilisation, no colour Control and the battery dies quick but for always having a camera with you and minimal faff, it’s great.
@@AndyManCam thanks Andy. I think I'll check the hero 8 and get a second freecom for my wife. Maybe if I need to replace the Scala one day I'll get the one with a camera. have a good one !
I think I'm going to have to try and put a video together doing exactly that. Overall I believe that the CB1000R does everything the FZ1 does, but just 15% better. Add up all those 15%'s and you've got a serious contender!
It’s a christmas tree decoration of features. Apparently it indicates the riding mode, economy, shift light and tells the time! But useless to a colour blind philistine like me!
I have just 2 bikes on my radar should I change from my Triumph Street Triple 765.... sadly neither exist currently. I think looking at bikes that exist, like you are doing makes more sense, but I don't feel huge enthusiasm about many of the current bikes. Am sure if I test rode a few, I'd like them, but the current bike styling is a bit underwhelming on the nakeds, and the sports are all too extreme... I need a Goldilocks bike! :D
@@fyorbane although that looks a very competent motorcycle, it is kind of all the opposite of the bikes I would tend to go for. But, I have learnt that the image in my mind of what I am after is often not the reality, so at bike change time, I will most definitely try and grab a demo on one.
@@SINIS0RSA I've done 23K miles on mine across several countries, yes range isn't great but there are plenty of fuel stations out there. Disbelievers can check out my channel.

@@raycollington4310 Well they are not very common on European roads, but there are some around. Biggest numbers are being sold in Japan. No. But I haven't had any time that I've needed one in 7000km. The geometry on bikes like this isn't aggressive enough to really warrant having a steering damper.
If the would just make this thing with cruise control I’d buy one today. But my CB650R is paid off and offers almost everything I care about that the 1000 offers. I just want cruise control so bad so I’m considering an MT10 because it actually has cruise control like a proper modern bike. It’s 2021 no excuse for any bike over $10k not to have cruise control it’s almost 2022 and if Honda doesn’t put cruise control on the 2022 them I’m switch to Yamaha because cruise control is more important to me than riding modes and Taft display it’s something I use ever single day on my 45 min ride to work and I’ve been using my wife’s Rebel 1100 because of cruise control and I keep telling her the CB1000r will have cruise control in 2022 abs I’ll trade my 650r in please don’t let me down Honda because I will buy an MT10 in 2022 despite its hideous looks it is a superior machine for less money given all the tech Yamaha has in the MT09 and MT10 in 2021 Honda has some catching up to do tech wise.
I've owned four Hondas in the past, and always said they're on par with BMW wrt quality. I heard the German police are searching for a motorcycle cyclist who's been honking his way round corners. Honestly...🙄

It’s certainly a far smoother experience with 4!
Have you seen Mr Fish has recently bought one of these? Well it is the plus version. He has a few videos of it recently. Nice bike!
Keep it up Andy, always entertaining chatter! And decent review remarks as well. :)
Good video and first look Andy
Great review. Love the bike.
Thanks BF! Me too. So much that i actually bought one!
Great review!!!
Many thanks Aris!
Awesome vid for an impromptu one... I’d love to see you get on the Africa Twin just the standard as everyone does the Adventure Sports
So you have one opportunity, on one day to ride a few bikes, and that's it.
from this day on andy, you shall be known as sir beepalot..
And lo, it was henceforth so.
how is the seating position compared to street triple rs beacuse im planning to buy this .... but heard its a bit aggressive for a naked
I'm slowly getting there. WHen I rode the Yamaha last week to wash it, I was already getting it wrong the other way around!
I doubt it.
Katana is an awesome bike.
I had the old CB1000R and loved that bike. I detest what they've done with it, hence why I now own the Aprilia :)
But Grey/Silver is the faster colour, right? ;) :D
sweet ride
I totally agree. So i got one!
I always forget; Is it two beeps for left, and one beep for right? Or is it vice versa?
1 left, 2 right, 3 for hazards and 4 for imminent disaster!
I was watching reviews of this yesterday. That darn horn 😆
I found myself on a similar thought pattern myself, and ended up buying one - picking up tomorrow cant wait
@@sergeantsodom6969 how did that work out for you? Do you like it ?
I sat on one a while back and it was sadly just way too cramped and crouchy for my lanky timbers!
@@AndyManCam I'd probably be the same as you...I'm 6'2" with 35 in inseam...so far, seems like the speed triple would fit me the best but not sure...are you comfortable on the CB1000?
Again, try the Suzuki GSXS-1000. I found it similar and a lot of fun also. Both fun bikes.
I already did last year! ua-cam.com/video/H1A6vENRSHk/v-deo.html It didn't set my pants on fire enough to drop the coin on it though I'm afraid.
AndyManCam Ok cool. Would you say the CB-1000R is more fun? I don’t think we have the plus version in the USA?
It is a nice looking bike and quite reliable. The windscreen seem a tad small 😉
Agreed. It’s beautifully finished and would likely last forever!
Very out the norm styling think it looks very good, personally would need some wind protection but that would spoil the bike look a reckon
😁 Agreed. Same here. Plenty enough performance for me. Will likely keep it until I’m 60!
Great stuff. Sounds like you enjoyed that one 😁
Andy are there any ktm dealerships near u..?? I think that u need to go test the 1290 super duke r or the new 890R duke...
I challenge you to try the MT09 without hitting the horn instead of the indicators too. Don’t buy one though. The riding position is shit. As is the headlight. The quickshifter on the CB plus model is pretty good but I thought it was a bit vibey for an line 4.
Still love my sc60 cb1000r.
Excuse me.
Do you know how to turn off trip A reset?
I’m afraid not. I find it very useful so I’ve never tried!
Would this be the potential replacement for the Fz1n you mentioned 🤔
Hi! AMC . Beautiful bike . Are you going to try Suzuki Gsx 1000 and Kawasaki z1000. I heard Yamaha are starting to save money on quality. Rust and such. Ttfn.........EBC
I want this bike.
You and me both. So i got one! 😍
Hey Andy.
How would you compare the CB100R to the FZ1?
I think I'm going to have to try and put a video together doing exactly that. Overall I believe that the CB1000R does everything the FZ1 does, but just 15% better. Add up all those 15%'s and you've got a serious contender!
Has this bike replaced the Fz1 then?
Yes it has 😍
Whoa..they make this in Silver too? : D
Sure do. After six months of owning it, it still looks great!
What is the green/ blue light on the right of the dash?
It’s a christmas tree decoration of features. Apparently it indicates the riding mode, economy, shift light and tells the time! But useless to a colour blind philistine like me!
In a way, I can relate more to your reviews than to those of 1000 PS, as you are not trying try make wheelies all the time... 😂
Thanks Tom. I think that’s so true! Not many of us actually ride like moto-journos! I try to keep it real!
“Oh he’s got Kevlar shorts on” lol
Must be a new fad catching on!
I have to put my hairs in order after that short run on the highway.
Did you sell off the fz1 ?
No, not yet. Seems like i want more money than it’s worth! 😂
haha the horn indicator! haha ;-)
Try a Kawasaki 1000sx Ninja. Great sporty do it all bike.
@@fyorbane although that looks a very competent motorcycle, it is kind of all the opposite of the bikes I would tend to go for. But, I have learnt that the image in my mind of what I am after is often not the reality, so at bike change time, I will most definitely try and grab a demo on one.
Seen iT in Black at Aberdeen Showroom (SOLD)
just not to Me , a few Upgrades & it will be a Real Smoothie"...
Totally. Although oddly i think that the first ‚upgrade‘ (mivv endcan) has introduced extra engine vibration! Ironic that stock is possibly better!
I love honda. Cb 1000r. Multi bike 😁👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Nice bike
Cheers very much.
Just get a go on the MT10 with its crossplane crank. Bags of character 👍
Not a bike for any touring purposes though.. Bit too thirsty for that.
if you don't mind the bland looks of it
@@SINIS0RSA I've done 23K miles on mine across several countries, yes range isn't great but there are plenty of fuel stations out there. Disbelievers can check out my channel.
@@jaromor8808 Ive heard plenty of folks call my MT10 ugly, weird, Transformer like but not bland. Do think Honda have done a decent job on the styling of the CB1000R though👍
@@SINIS0RSA You can tour on pretty much anything and my MT10 is no exception (I love touring on it!). A 100 miles between stops (whilst you fill up) is a decent enough distance for most people. Granted, if you want to sit on the motorway all day and do big miles, then it's not for you, but then for that use case, I'd take the car... ;)
Thinking on trading my atas in for one today the deal on them are just to good at 0% Apr so🤞
Look up Chronicles of Mr Fish as he has gone the same route.
I can understand that! The deal I got was also too good to pass up!
Gets delivered in two weeks
Boom! Congratulations!
I know, I know people will tear me apart in their comments but.....
Andy, have you considered giving the CB1100 a try ?
andree hammerschmidt I agree, a lovely looking bike.
I can't work out why I never see a CB1100, beautiful bike.
@@raycollington4310
Well they are not very common on European roads, but there are some around. Biggest numbers are being sold in Japan. Many people in Europe and the States unfortunately prefer pure horsepower over elegance and beauty. It's my top favourite bike. Unfortunately right now financially out of reach for me. 😭
Safe rides 👍🏍
Does this bike come with a steering damper ?
I agree. It’s under specced against its competition!
see if you can get your hands on a s1000xr for a test ride , I think you would be pleasantly suprpised !
I’m sensing this could be the new bike?? 😀
I see a new bike coming mmmm
Sounds like it's on the definitely maybe list:)
Are all of those ad breaks imposed by UA-cam? Annoying.
Yeah, they were automatically chucked in by UA-cam. I had no idea. I've taken them all out now! Thanks for the heads up!
Red pumps?
I've owned four Hondas in the past, and always said they're on par with BMW wrt quality. I heard the German police are searching for a motorcycle cyclist who's been honking his way round corners. Honestly...🙄
I’ve never even ridden a Honda before this. Certainly up there with the best, quality wise! The coppers haven’t found me yet!
Poor guy in the wheel chair crossing the road must have thought you were beeping him!
Oh look he's got Kevlar shorts on 🤣😂🤣😂
Just can’t seem to find where to buy some for myself! 😜
My new drinking game is, every time you use the horn by accident I take a shot of tequila....cheers....
Kevlar lederhosen, whatever next!
Where was I? Ah yes....shitting my pants..😄 nice Andy. 😅
Awesome content time after time, gotta ask though, do you act on the side? I’m watching Cursed on Netflix and the Person portraying Merlin don’t arf have a canny resemblance to ya. 😂
I was just watching that today thinking the bloke looked familiar. And you’re right, he could be Andy’s doppelgänger. Either that or Andy’s been moonlighting as one of the Skaarsgards...
