Just rented it from a nearby dealer for a day and burned through 160 miles. Good blast, it's beefy and explosive yet super easy to use. Nothing wrong with it really!
Great first review, thanks TMF! I own one, the plus model, and am very happy with it. I chose it over the Speed Triple, mainly because it just felt that bit better to ride. One of those bikes that is spot on in every way. There's a lot of wisdom in its simplicity too. Honda claim this bike is quicker to 80mph than the Fireblade, due to more torque and shorter gearing. After that, the extra power and aerodynamics give the Fireblade the advantage. It'll still do 70mph in 1st and 90 in second, so there's the same ability to have lots of fun in second gear on the twisties. The engine is very versatile too. You can ride like a gent at around 3-4,000 rpm and keep everything civilised around town etc, but then the power just rushes in when there's a chance to open it up. I also tested the MT10 and chose this for its refinement and handling. The looks are the icing on the cake for me. Not to be dismissed without a test ride if you're in the market.
I was happy to see this comment - I have been torn between the Speed Triple and the CB1000R - the bike I have now is a 2017 CB500F and I love it - so now this makes me want to go with the CB1000R. Thanks!
Had one as a loan bike and it had the excellent Honda Quickshifter/Autoblipper fitted. The lower position of the indicator switch is more logical and easier once you are used to it. I found the throttle snatchy especially in Sport mode but overall it’s an impressive machine.
The torque/ sound of the CB1000r has been set up such that a link pipe joins the 2 main pipes just before the catalysers, boosting torque from 5,000rpm up. The exhaust note has been tuned internally, meaning that as the revs rise past 5,500rpm it takes on a significantly deeper, more raw tone.
I have this bike. Since the week of its release May 2018. I am an all year round biker. I love it. It makes me want to go everywhere and anywhere on it. Great review though.
SFF-BP - Separate Function Fork Big Piston. One tube handles preload, the other handles compression and rebound damping. This means you don't have to figure out how to adjust both tubes exactly the same, and you only have to adjust one. It's pretty trick.
Great review. Being new to on-road riding, I’ve owned the CB125 R last year and now I’m riding the CB300 R. They have similar styling to the 1000R especially the headlamps. Liking the retro style with modern functionality.
David Hardcastle still riding the CB300R. I’ve had my eye on the CB650R and now I’m waiting to see the new triumph trident. To be fair though as a wknd blaster that’s cheap to run, easy to maintain and fun to ride I’ll probably be keeping my CB300R either way.
AlexStanley good to hear, I’ve bought the CB125R and really enjoying. It’s likely the CB650R or Z650 next, that is, If my duke 390 doesn’t magically get delivered by time I can get mod 1 and 2 nailed
I got one of these in November last year, ex demo from HGB. Saw you had reviewed it and was nervous but glad you like it! It's a bit un-honda so the greybeards say. For a fast commute from nr Amersham to Oxford she's a beaut. Friendly too to my relative inexperience :)
Yeah, nice machine, I've had a go and concur with TMF but would add - 1. Mirrors don't cover the spot right behind you so if cars follow too close you lose them/forget they're there. 2. Riding position is fairly sporty and seat seems to push you into the tank after a while (seems like this on a lot of modern bikes) 3. I tried the CB1100RS the week after and much preferred it even though on paper it looks a bit lardy and tame by comparison. Actually own one now. (Qualification - I'm pushing 50 and my middle-aged brain can't seem to keep up with anything over 100 bhp 😓)
Great review. I've been looking forward to a review of this bike, so really enjoyed it. I've seen them in the flesh at my local Honda dealership and they look great....even better than in the pictures. Being a bit of a retro fan, I prefer the looks of my CB1100RS but I must admit a bit of the extra 50bhp over my bike would be nice! Keep up the good work.
I’ve been thinking about upgrading my wife’s MT-07 up to a MT-10 this year but I think I may have to look at this also. I do like the ease of plodding that Honda seem to do so well, (now I sound 90) with the performance on tap when you need it.
Rich mate. I have a CB1000R plus an FZ1 and I have had 2 MT10s. I would suggest she tries the MT09 or the XSR900 cos they are both tamer OR the CB1000R. The MT10 is a bit "hot" and fast as hell!!
Well said about the 'Honda Horn/indicator button' ... C'mon Honda sort it out, no one needs the buttons/switches in different places to what we've all come to expect from 99% of the manufacturers irrespective of what marque we decide to ride..... Let's have an industry standard here so we all sing from the same hymn book.
I just bought an Immaculate 2018 Ex demo, Silver Standard model with 600miles on the weekend and it had the Short Akrapovic end can & Quick shifter added, After test riding the 2019 Plus version I was happy enough to purchase the Standard with the extras. My 1st Honda and everything is simple and easy to use aside from the Indicators as mentioned in your video, I too have accidentally hit the horn a few times now Lol. Love it and it's gonna be a great piece of kit for the Summer.
Loved the look of these since they've been released. And then I saw the CB650R next to it in the show room, I imagine that model is actually a brilliant weekend bike.
Great review. I really like the side of the tank on this bike. When you were in the up close look, the sun shines on it just perfect. That's the nice thing about bikes. So many to choose from like you say. It really comes down to individual taste. Every brand has one I wish I could have pretty much. Cheers from Pittsburgh, Flyer!
Enjoyed watching your review on the Honda. I really like the fact you use plain English to say how good it is. As soon as I hear anyone say understeer or oversteer, soft ride, hard ride, etc, it doesn’t half turn me off. I also think you shouldn’t pay any attention to those who say you always end saying there’s nothing wrong with the bike. If you buy a bike from the big 4 from Japan or Triumph, these guys have been making motorcycles for years, so you don’t expect faults. So, keep reving and don’t stall.
I studied this bike for a year and just had to have one. Found a leftover 2018 in black - which is what I wanted anyway. Still too much silver on it for my taste, so I blacked it all out - a real head turner. No, it's not the baddest bike on the block, but it's certainly the best looking. Besides, in normal use, who needs more than 145 HP? I traded in a VFR1200F for this bike and I'm happy as hell with it. It'll keep up with the VFR up to 80 MPH, and believe me, 467 pounds is a lot more fun than 600 pounds. Smoothest engine in the world, and, yes, the muffler sounds just fine. Plenty of torque in any gear - even in 6th at 25 MPH it's got smooth strong acceleration. I've never ever been burned by a Honda, from my Super-90's in the '60's, my first true love CB750 in 1970, a CL450, V45 750, V65 Sabre, V65 Magna, VFR1200F, and now this beauty. I love this bike. Call it Naked, call it NeoSports Café, call it whatever you want - it's a great bike.
Good review tmf get impression it's a bit lacking in character compared to others like the mt10 and ktm and built down to a price using an engine from 13 yrs ago guess honda still had a pile of motors or the castings parts etc lying around a warehouse somewhere . I like Honda bikes have bought a few over the years but none of the current range do i find inspiring to own or ride unlike the fireblades or nc30/nc35s of the nineties . Think the problem these days is the motorcycle side with the exception of the current fireblade or monkey bike has to much input from the automotive dept good bikes but dull and insipid compared to other manufactures.
Looks like a nice bike, and a typical Honda. It seems to perform perfectly, giving the rider analytical feedback and has a nicely integrated, compact and sporty look. My only problem is where is the soul? The sound - even with an akra - and the looks while nice, are forgettable. Interesting to see how this compares to the new Katana which is as powerful, contains a GSXR1000 engine and has the same angled looks. Thanks for the review!
@@G91YS the Suzuki is incredibly good on fuel, I have the gsxs1000 (same bike) different dress 👗 , it gets 48- 52 mpg, the fuel tank capacity doesn't mean a lot, it's how far you can go without filling up that's important.
G'day mate, I have the same bike in Red. One item you appeared to have left out of your spec review was the quick shifter that was fitted to your review bike. It works absolutely brilliantly, up and down. Very good review as usual, especially when you mentioned that taller riders would be comfortable on it. I'm 6"2, 107kg and long legs. I fitted an S&P Engineering short muffler to mine with the db killer removed. Awesome sound achieved!! Stay safe.
Andrew Edmond well said, strange TMF missed mentioning the quick shifter, perhaps they are becoming so common he missed it. I’m presuming it doesn’t have cruise control but might be an accessory one could add.
Thank you for a great review.I'm looking for a new bike and have watched several of your reviews and it's really helpful, as sometimes test rides are not available. My Short list: CB1000R+, Triumph Speed RS or maybe a Tuono factory. The Triumph suspension was very hard on poor roads but was great fun on smooth tarmac.. The Tuono range is a problem when out with mates , 90 miles is a pain. So perhaps the CB1000 would be a good choice. Thanks again.
Cracking looking bike TMF got some nice details and shapes to make it look unique. Didn’t hear if the wing mirrors where any good? Think the only complaint would be the seat being a bit firm, something I’d change. Great review as always TMF 👍
Was (am) considering chopping in my 2018 AT for the cb1000r and been checking everyday to see if you're going to review it, flashed up this morning and couldn't wait to watch it after work..... love your reviews and keep up the great work 👍
A nice looking bike, sounds impressive, but had a test ride on a Diavel today up at Seastar Norwich, and wow what a bike, although always biased to anything Italian, and appreciate they come with expensive price tag. Thanks for another great review TMF.
Well done review as we have come to expect. As the owner of a 1982 CB900F I have to say the look is just not to my taste. I am glad that Honda is making an edgier CB, the 1100EX is too flabby. Now, Honda, wrap this 1000R motor and suspension with 1100EX styling and THAT will pique my interest. Thanks Mr TMF! Peace!
Pleasing/depressing to see some of Britain's roads are as bad as the roads in Australia. Good review as ever, I am intrigued by this bike and will definitely be test-riding closer to decision time. Other choices are MT-10SP and GSX-S1000.
I sat on one of these at my local dealer. Man that seat is hard ! Don't know how far I could ride that before I was crippled lol and a passenger would definitely be taking their life in their hands.. Good review as usual..
just ridden mine for 1.5 hours non-stop, and felt absolutely fine. no numb bum, no achey wrists, no stiff back... nothing. no cheating with a cushion or anything, completely standard bike and wearing hood jeans. This is the exact opposite of how i'd be starting to feel after similar (often less) time on the '16 vfr i've just spent 3 years with; it started getting a bit wristy after around 45 minutes, and the comfy seat was feeling a bit too soft by around 2 hours obviously, your take on things could be completely different...
Got one, love it, done a couple of track days now in awe of it, very forgiving motor cycle, well set up by Honda, loads of power, Bridgestone tyres offer loads of grip to and at 6ft 2in no problem.
Blimin indicator moving ! I had the same issue between my CB125R and the riding school's older CB600s that I just passed my test on. When swapping between them It was almost "one honk for left" , "two honks for right" . I don't think other road users could guess the code !
I was thinking is customising a motorcycle nowadays really worth it? Back in the day the variety was so limited to get what you wanted you bought the nearest bike and made it what you wanted, nowadays there is such a variety you can get just what you want straight out of the box. Barr the exhaust.
Another beatiful review of a beautiful bike, thanks! May I give you a tip? If you´re stopping for longer (like lights, or at the end of the journey) always kick the N from second gently while still moving - breaking, before full halt. It´s so easy, and then you don´t have to hold the clutch for the entire time you´re waiting for the green, or while moving the bike on spot (like this time). You also risk so much less (accidental unintended clutch release) and then I just love the shake of the bike when you kick the first gear while the red changes to orange and then green (which I don´t even see as I´m already gone :).. And as it´s all now milion times repeated, it becomes natural, not slowing me more than a milisecond.. I hope you´re not mad at me trying to teach you something, as I mean it nicely.. I wish I had someone telling me what I could improve on my ridings :)
Good review 👍. Sometimes think could do with a profile shot of the riding position with a rider on the bike, for someone not familiar with bikes and on the look out it would be good to see.
No centre stand? Any frame lugs if you want to get one fitted by the bike shop. I did that with my CB500F. Makes life much easier terms of oiling, adjusting chains. Not a fan of paddock stands.
Once again (unrelated ads viewers have to click through notwithstanding) an excellent review. On this bike and others, I appreciate Honda’s effort to minimize exposure of tank’s pinch-weld; something I wish Triumph’s “classic” models would appropriate. However, while I appreciate the appeal of this bike, I remain baffled as to why Honda doesn’t build a naked model around their VFR V-4 mill. Now that’s an engine with gobs of character and, by default, a bike I’d likely buy.
Good to hear from you as ever Walter - I know adverts are annoying sometimes but by carrying advertising I'm able to keep this channel free to view....I don't ask you to Join for a monthly fee or sign up to Patreon, etc....
TheMissendenFlyer . Yeah, I have no problem with the ads, I just wish they related to motorcycles or anything I’m remotely interested in discovering more about. I don’t really post UA-cam reviews, but I guess you have no control over that? Regardless, your reviews are great and getting better all the time. Thanks!
Hi TMF Some neat touches but the no.plate carrier spoils the rear end for me. Love Honda quality but so many new bikes now ignore pillion requirements and with a lot of insurance companies discouraging the carrying of passengers I guess this is being reflected in bike design, a pity in my opinion. Don’t know how long Blade let you have the bikes for but you are so close to some great biking roads across the Berkshire downs between Wantage, Newbury and Lambourn that it seems a shame not to ride them when you’re out this way. Cheers.
I owned one for a few months MF but my ageing body couldn't cope with that harsh rear suspension! The lights do all sorts of things - tell you what mode your in, what gear you in, fuel economy and when to change gear! Nice review.
The suspension is only harsh if you don’t take some time to set it up to your weight and preference - certainly the standard factory settings DO give a VERY uncomfortable ride
00:36 Didn't the Italians invent this sector with the Monster like 30 years ago? Not sure if that is a "naked" bike or what, but the Monster 1200 S certainly checks that box now. I really do like this Honda though. I am justifying it by telling myself I need a skinny, naked bike to better filter in the Los Angeles traffic!
Thanks TMF, been waiting for this one to be tested for a while as am interested in buying one. Watching on holiday in Hanoi, a city with 200,000 bikes. Would love to see you do a tour out here, it’s absolutely bonkers 😂
Why do modern bikes have the pillion seat up in the clouds ? On my very limited experience of taking the extra weight so high up (on my CB125R , and yes I've just passed my test, and have pillion insurance ! ) makes the bike handle very different . I'm sure handling will be a lot different even when I get a bike with a flatter seat, but putting that much weight up high seems silly to me. I guess they're just not designed to carry pillions . The pillion has an issue getting that high up too. This is one of the reasons I'm very likely to end up with a Triumph "Modern Classic" from the Bonnie range . I guess big bike number 2 , maybe next year , I will not be bothered by the pillion position, coz that will just be for me , and not for going out with my wife on the back ! (We'll have the Triumph for that)
I’ve been waiting for someone (I trust😉) to review this bike! I considered this before buying my Monster 1100, but the Monster was a hell of a deal at the time. Might have to go demo this one just to see if I can notice differences. Thanks, TMF!
It is pretty much a refreshed cb1000r(a) ie the bike it replaces. The frame is a bit revised at the front where it braces the cylinder/head and the engine has electronic fairies added and new styling. Tada, a new bike. The old cb1000r was super good bike as it was and this is just a bit better with its electrical aids. For example the prototype for this neo cafe racer is totally based on the old one just with the styling changed and it was dead gorgeous, this is basically the toned down result.
I wanted a fast bike without the plastic of a street bike and with a slightly more upright rider position. This bike is right at home in my garage next to my Africa Twin.
Such a nice looking bike! Was really wanting the CB 300R but went with BMW G310R as Honda availability was delayed and I had already booked my road test. Went with my close second, but would love to see a pro compare the two (hint, hint) 😋
Just rented it from a nearby dealer for a day and burned through 160 miles. Good blast, it's beefy and explosive yet super easy to use. Nothing wrong with it really!

@will M Absolutely! Motorcycling is such a personal thing, all you can do is test ride and see what it feels like!
So many bikes... so little garage space, money and familial understanding. Another good review, thanks TMF.
Had one as a loan bike and it had the excellent Honda Quickshifter/Autoblipper fitted. The lower position of the indicator switch is more logical and easier once you are used to it. I found the throttle snatchy especially in Sport mode but overall it’s an impressive machine.

I couldn't agree more that it's hard to find a bad bike these days, even "budget" bikes like the MT-07 and SV650 are brilliant bikes.
I like the look more than I thought I would.. heard suspension isn't up to the job of what the motor can deliver.. need to try one!

Please do the 2019 cb650r next please.. think it's going to be my next bike but waiting on your review before I bite the bullet
Excellent review, lots of great details
Thank you kindly!
another great vlog TMF, least the weather is better this time
Cracking looking bike TMF got some nice details and shapes to make it look unique. Didn’t hear if the wing mirrors where any good?
Think the only complaint would be the seat being a bit firm, something I’d change. Great review as always TMF 👍
Yep, I'd have one of those. That coloured light is a 'fuel economy indicator', glad to see you can turn it off.
You can't get a roll bag on the back, so I didn't buy one. Honda!
Was (am) considering chopping in my 2018 AT for the cb1000r and been checking everyday to see if you're going to review it, flashed up this morning and couldn't wait to watch it after work..... love your reviews and keep up the great work 👍
Thank you!
Nice review TMF I do like the look of these neo cafe bikes
A nice looking bike, sounds impressive, but had a test ride on a Diavel today up at Seastar Norwich, and wow what a bike, although always biased to anything Italian, and appreciate they come with expensive price tag. Thanks for another great review TMF.
I own a CB1000R and it's brilliant 🚀
Well done review as we have come to expect. As the owner of a 1982 CB900F I have to say the look is just not to my taste. I am glad that Honda is making an edgier CB, the 1100EX is too flabby. Now, Honda, wrap this 1000R motor and suspension with 1100EX styling and THAT will pique my interest. Thanks Mr TMF!
Peace!
I test rode one of those. I have a CBX1000 now
LOVE the CBX!
This is the exact opposite of how i'd be starting to feel after similar (often less) time on the '16 vfr i've just spent 3 years with; it started getting a bit wristy after around 45 minutes, and the comfy seat was feeling a bit too soft by around 2 hours
obviously, your take on things could be completely different...
i absolutely loe that rear end and tail, and now that this look is coming to the cbr650...man that is a temptation
Beautiful bike and great video, lovely!
Got one, love it, done a couple of track days now in awe of it, very forgiving motor cycle, well set up by Honda, loads of power, Bridgestone tyres offer loads of grip to and at 6ft 2in no problem.
Very good review tmf .I have the original one Honda made 2010 one. Great to see the new one. Thanks Danny
*oooh* looks good! Solid Honda build quality.
Enjoy the ride *TheMissendenFlyer*
Love the look of the tank with no seam.
Had a test ride of one of these today. Very good. I then went and test rode a Triumph Speed Triple. That was very good too !
Triumph poor support, and quality.
SFF BP USD= Separate Function Fork Big Piston Up Side Down. Compression in one fork, dampening in the other. And 45mm (big)
Same thing on my Forza. Have to look down to use the horn. Thanks again Sir........Sal : )
It's a pain isn't it!
Good review 👍. Sometimes think could do with a profile shot of the riding position with a rider on the bike, for someone not familiar with bikes and on the look out it would be good to see.
Used to have a CB1300, the naked version, loads of torque and character, great fun...wish I’d kept it.
I like it! My only problem with these bikes is I like luggage and pillion. Looks wise, love it.
Thanks!
Good review as usual TMF. I like this a lot but I think I'm happy with my Kawasaki Z900RS which is sort of the same style.
Hi TMF
Some neat touches but the no.plate carrier spoils the rear end for me.
Cheers.
I was just watching Lamb Chop's latest video, Bruce looks like a right monster beside you.
He is a huge beast of a man!
Thanks for the review tmf. I currently have a honda cb650f and was thinking of buying this as an upgrade next year
Thanks for posting. Nice looking bike and good price. Maybe an aftermarket screen.
Just looked myself. Puig have a pretty wide range, from flycatchers to full adjustable touring screens and everything between.
Great review, thank you! Beautiful looking motorcycle!
great review as always
Looks amazing, I really like the styling of these modern bikes, cheers :)
Fantasy garage addition TMF, this Honda or the Z900RS?
Z900RS
I see The Chronicles of Mr Fish and Andy ManCam have both purchased a 2020 unit... must have listened to you haha!
Looks very nice ! Stunning looking bike
Have you tried a leather suit, I love mine by tt leathers very comfortable and warm
Thanks TMF, been waiting for this one to be tested for a while as am interested in buying one. Watching on holiday in Hanoi, a city with 200,000 bikes. Would love to see you do a tour out here, it’s absolutely bonkers 😂
Great review. What’s the turning circle like? Thanks
Yep nice bike and thanks for the review fella
I think you did ok with the monster....
Another awesome review! Thanks!
How is this seating position comparing to the Street Triple? Thanks mate.
Is this what winter in the UK looks like?
Yep...
I wanted a fast bike without the plastic of a street bike and with a slightly more upright rider position. This bike is right at home in my garage next to my Africa Twin.
Great review again. Good bike to own I reckon.
Simply gorgeous motorbike !!
It sure is!
Been waiting for this one thanks TMF
Edit I wasn’t going to ride until late March April but the weather looks really good in that video albeit cool
Cannot decide if I like the looks or not. Wish they put proper mudguards on these things
Such a nice looking bike! Was really wanting the CB 300R but went with BMW G310R as Honda availability was delayed and I had already booked my road test. Went with my close second, but would love to see a pro compare the two (hint, hint) 😋
Nice looking bike. I have no idea how it goes or handles. But it does look the part. If a little cumbersome looking.
Thanks again TMF for the insight.
