Her stage presence is unbelievable considering that this was her first record and first live performance. She was bound to be a star from the start. ❤❤❤Shirley❤❤❤
The vocal power that made her "Goldfinger" so iconic is already there. And from recordings in the 2020s, she still has it! Amazing singer and performer!
Hi Oakwood I think you are right. I was in the audience of her first West End stage show about 1956 or so, when she sang this song, Part way through 2 lads in the audience started laughing at her, She stopped the band and turned on the lads I can't remember what she said but is was like "What is your problem" The audience and I applauded her and she turned to the band and they started the song again. And she was only 19! Amazing, such confidence! Roy
This example of early Shirley was written specifically for her by Ross Parker who had penned Vera Lynn's wartime hit "We'll Meet Again." Banned by the BBC it failed to become the hit it should have been.
I was fortunate enough today to spend time with a chap that saw Shirley Bassey when she was 18 and a supporting act in Melbourne, Australia. This is after him telling me he'd seen Louis Armstrong and Ella Fistzgerald another time. I asked him did he see her star quality ... he said he 'never gotten over it , we were the same age'.
DSB always brings 😊 fun best humor unbound gifted talent glamour entertainer then into infinity ♾️💎☺️ 🎶 that puts the Dame in Shirley Bassey 👍😎🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️🌎 Legend Greatest of all DSB ❤️💕🌎🙏🙏🙏
This was also her first record .. a 78rpm released on the Philips label in 1956, with "Stormy Weather" on the 'B' side. Recorded in London, the recording engineer was Joe Meek.
I think she was used mainly just to sing that song with power and lyrics which surely no one want to do and can not do. But her voice and the way she sing stuck!
How did this come to be filmed (I'm pretty sure the BBC didn't have video in 1956 - besides, it's definitely been on film at some point) - did such material get filmed as a matter of course? (I wish my teeth were as good as that; looks like a perfect set!)
Haha she's said in interviews that she didn't know what the lyrics meant and just sang what was put in front of her. Come on now Dame Shirley, the facial expressions in this video say it all, and by this time she was no virgin.

This a huge thrill seeing this clip. What a treasure.
June 2024 she is still excellent
"Love the looks on the faces of the Band!!!!!!"
The real sin is how few views this video has.
People dont even know, this voice is timeless even I can tell that
🤣
I'm looking up these songs they've banned they're all really good songs and it's ridiculous. Shirley Bossey what a fantastic voice and song.
Damn, she was freaking cute!

She was the first singer to have a record 'banned' by the bbc wasn't she?
I 💘 u

I have this on 78
Commands the stage at 19, that's pretty good.
This is one of my favorite singers. Isn't she? Richard Shaw is the author of Music Education in The Schools (Audible.com).
lol... banned by the BBC, but Rolf Harris and Jimmy Saville are okay.
+Sludgepump this was banned several decades before anyone knew who those 2 monsters were.
uh, yea... I reckon.
Yea!
Go on, ha ha. X
Please, could you correct to Shirley (Shirely is a typo, of course) ;)

I’m surprised she could wear that outfit in 1956!
Isn't this song banned?
I hate when my stuff gets;
Banned Deleted Removed Taken Stolen Burned Restricted.
Shirl looks younger now
As if this was her first TV appearance and the BBC banned the song for suggestive lyrics
Brendan Pilkington my uncle Ross Parker write the song. It sold enough to be number one but was not recorded as such because of the ban etc
Wonderful to see such early Shirley. Completely new to me, wonderful

I'm watching a video about songs that were initially banned & this song came up. I had to look it up. What beauty & talent!🎉💞💯💥
fallout better put this song in their future games
Burn the candle at both ends.. hmmm. Banned by the BBC. :)
Does anyone think it's a song about a threesome?
if the candle was a female, its the BBC that's thinking negative and dirty about this song. I didn't even had a clue what that meant long ago
@@philipdalton1000s I didn't get that. I think it just means she wants someone to help her stay out late "partying".
To think that this was banned on the radio.
One of the songs the bbc banned what ever snow flakes
She just wanted her candle burnt =P
love you
