The Dame's had 70 years of hits. A top single every decade since the 1950s - the Propellerheads were lucky enough to have her give them this one. There's a point where you go beyond simply being a hit maker, and become immortal.
These MF’ers came on the scene and dropped ONE album in 1998 and it’s one of the most important electronic/break-beat records of all time. Every single song is a banger and has been licensed in so much media in the late ‘90s and 2000s - The Matrix, Wipeout for N64, and the very first iPod commercial to name a small fraction.
Break-Beat lasted faaaaar too short a time for my tastes...I was down for a few more years. Can you imagine what unholy fusions we could've been gifted if they did?
There is nothing, nothing, NOTHING better right now than Ms. Shirley Bassey singing this song -- except perhaps for her singing Goldfinger! She is a musical treasure!
The liner notes of the Propellerheads' album Decksandrumsandrockandroll included the lines: "We would like to extend our maximum respect to Shirley Bassey for honouring us with her performance. We are still in shock...."
The whole project is a masterpiece. BBC personnel are perfect, as well as the three brass professors! The sound, the pace, the outfits...and the luxury of high quality black&white.
Have you read up on the director/producer Stewart Morris who did a lot with hert during the 70s and 80s? In the time it should be on tape in one or two runs, and rehearsel was everything. And budget wise the sky is the limit. This is nice reminder of those days..

Awesome voice! When Shirley opens the taps, I don't think any other female singer can come close to her power. She makes a Saturn 5 rocket seem under powered!
I think Shirley is the best singer in the uk . I was introduced to her music in my early 20s by an older lady that lived upstairs from me. I was an instant fan. Shes got an amazing vocie. ❤❤❤❤

Thank you, I had to share your comment to my share post. I was looking to see if it was new version of the song History Repeating...A futuristic retro song. x
I think genre plays a part; Propellerheads were part of the Big Beat scene which was always rather big on combining samples from older songs to make something new, so naturally if any genre was going to be combined with an old Shirley Bassey song it was going to be this one. A similar example of this effect would be Junkie XL' remix of A Little Less Conversation by Elvis Presley. I think the oldest version I can think of where an old song got modernised quite well was the synth version of Music for the Funeral March of Queen Mary that got used in A Clockwork Orange. A good example of the formula put in reverse that I quite like is Crazy in Love by Swing Republic which is an Electro Swing cover of Crazy in Love by Beyonce. Of course this rule isn't 100% true as there are genres that aren't sample based that still combine well with older genres. In recent years it's become clear that Drum and Bass goes pretty well with Rock music. In short, there will always be genres that blend well together, and discovering those genres is all part of the fun :D.
My late Grandmother saw Shirley in concert here in Australia she said Shirley was the most dynamic performer she had ever watched live. It’s impossible to stay still during this song exciting melody and a magnificent singer in Shirley. God bless her
I love the floor manager break dancing. I saw this in a cinema in 1998. It was playing just before "There's Something About Mary". On the same album they do a cover of the theme from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", which is my favorite James Bond film.
Can't stop listening to this song and reliving the best comic moments from the film - whether it is Ben Stiller getting his balls stuck in a zipper or Cameron Diaz using a mystery liquid as "hair gel"
My Dad was a proud Welshman and loved Shirley, sadly he hasn't been around for over 20 years, but I have to agree with his view, she always sounds great, fabulous, powerful voice
