  • Samsung 870 Evo Dies, Major Issue 2TB & 4TB To Be Aware Of, Be Careful People!!
Any one that has a Samsung Evo 2-4tb drive needs to check for corruption errors as this leads to a dead drive eventually and loss of data with big head aches!!

I've been running several Samsung 860 and 870 EVO in different systems for years and all have been rock solid. It's possible that there was a bad batch, but overall these drives are the best you can get for the price. Look up the reviews for other brands of SSD, there are horror stories with all of them, with much higher failure rates than the Samsung products.

    • @mhnoni
      @mhnoni Місяць тому

Same here, but Samsung is known for changing the components of the product after a year from release (good reviews), they start using cheap slow components without any announcement.
This is a scam, they should give a new batch that has a newer component a another name, something like 870 EVO V2 so people know this isn't the same product that they are seeing on the internet reviews.

Had this happen in the morning. PC didn't seem to start at all and was just stuck loading for ages in motherboard boot screen. Spent whole damn day trying figure out what had gone from PC, went first for more obvious faults like Ram, main drive (nvme ssd), possibly corrupted bios etc, but each one was fine. Then just left my pc on that loading screen for quite while (went to cook food) and when came back it was finally open and managed to figure out that my storage drive aka this piece of junk had broken also it still had near frozen my pc even in windows.
Didn't go out suddenly though, like you said I also had weird unexplainable crashes for while now and other minor stuff, but never figured out what was the cause, though part of is that I was always looking in to ram, GPU and my main SSD instead of storage one. Which I almost never used for anything except storing some random stuff.
Happy that it wasn't anything major in the end and didn't lose anything important that hadn't backed up in external HDD ages ago, but still gave me solid headache for hours.

If I bought one of these Samsung solid state drive in 2024 will I have these issues? Got a nice rig and I wanted to add some solid state drives to my pc in the built in bay. So i put 2x2TB of them in the mounting bay. Says it comes with a 5 year warranty.

I'm in the same situation now but for the 8TB 870 QVO that I bought in July 2021 and the manufacturing date says 2021/05. Used it as a game drive and I believe almost 11GB of writes was done. I also came across random crashes and by end of last November, the drive is not detected anymore. I tried on other systems, tried with SATA to USB, and also checked bios. It's completely dead and the warranty is also over. The weird thing is Samsung Magician never reported errors. I decided don't want to spend on 8TB drives and just go for a 4TB Samsung 870 EVO instead until I saw this video.

Should I buy an 860 or an 870? I'm looking for the one that will last longer. Or do I still run the same risks with the 860 since they are from a new batch and are not comparable to the ones that were made 3 years ago.

nope. 860 is affected too. best is not to buy any samsung ssd for now until samsung fix the issue. the latest 990 is also suffering from this issue too. my guess is this is an hardware issue, little to no caused by the firmware. possibly defect NAND batches.

I've just sent mine back to amazon, made in 2020 sold march 21
It died after a power shut down tried formatting it but I kept getting an I/O device error? and the format was recognised as raw not ntfs,
If anyone is trying to recover data from one you might be able to read it on a linux computer . . . .
One of my old laptops with ubuntu could read the drive and show all the files but wouldn't format it.

Exactly the same issue with my Samsung EVO 870 2TB MF date 07/2021. Purchased Nov 2021, fine for 12 months, 1.1TB stored on the drive. Started to get some files unable to be read or copied last month,, random crashes in games stored on the drive.. Did not think anything of it as the drive is only around 12 months old. Yesterday, while playing a game, it exited the game to the desktop. Figured it was likely the game, just a random glitch? Proceeded to reboot Windows 10. Got the Windows logo and the usual dots spinning forever and would not boot. Looked in the BIOS, shock...the drive was no longer detected! tried a few times, stil no joy. Eventually I opened up the PC and removed the drive. Attached it to a USB 3.0 adapter and connected the drive to another PC. Same deal, lost partition, drive letter shows but unable to access the drive. Windows asks "Drive not formatted. Do you want to format now? Currently running data recovery software that can recover from lost partitions, luckily the data is almost all still there. Its been running 24 hours now, approx 500GB recovered so far. RMAing the drive. Pretty disappointed as I actually have a Samsung 850 Pro 512GB that has 65000 power on hours, 9 years old without any errors in SMART whatsoever with 39TB of data written total. This drive was nowhere close to that! Defo a problem with a number of these EVO 870s mostly from 2021. Firmware or controller issues possibly from certain batches?

Once they're written to the SSD, they're read only. So does the reading process affect the durability, too?

@@bkjgvjggh7654 Don't worry too much. A certain percentage of electronic boards just fails. A small percentage. I watched many repair videos now. Many times it's one single capacitor that makes a short. I think I have identified in my case that the 5V rail is shorted. I had not enough time to do more up to now but in the next month I will hopefully have time to find out exactly where the short is.
Most important: Always have a backup of the important data on your SSD. Because I had a full backup of about one month back it was not that bad. But still, the bureau-crazy with Samsung made me nuts. I didn't get the warranty that I should have got. This makes me very mad about Samsung. Other Samsung devices work great. Ok, with the Galaxy S3 was also a desaster. Samsung had to quickly produce the S3 Neo and sell it for a cheap price to not get a huge customer complaint wave. But the Galaxy S8 still works, since maybe 6? years. Good timespan for a mobile compared to others. The Samsung TV also works flawlessly.

need to upgrade firmware when you buy these drives. Most people simply install and never do anything, failure occurs. Also, most people running these drives on windows 11, not a good idea, best to run linux distro for longevity of m.2 and 2.5 drives .

Yes take it out of your pc, and it should boot like normal, the corrupted drive is make it takes ages to boot up, same as mine did! and move any important stuff if you can, try contacting Samsung to get a replacement, they are aware of this issue.

Just get wd 3D nand (previous gen) or the sandisk ultra3d 4tb wise. Mx500 is pretty bad nowadays and 4tb has a high chance of being QLC based unfortunately.

For anyone else dealing with this problem in 2023 / 24, first try to change your cables, starting with your SATA Cable. I had this issue and turns out I was using a sata cable from an old build that was NOT a SATA3 6Gb/s cable. When I did my new build that is the ONLY cable that I brought over from the old PC as my new Motherboard and Power Supply came with SATA cables that were designed specifically for SATA3 6Gb/s. Also update your drive firmware via Sata Magician and reboot. If these two changes don't fix your problem, buy a better rated drive and get Geek Squad or a local company that is certified to do data recovery to go ahead and duplicate the data while the SSD is somewhat operable. Good Luck!

@@solzzy Lots of reports too from Samsungs TOTL 2.5” ssd the 870 Evo!! I was gonna buy one or both of these drives like two weeks ago. I think I dodged a bullet.
Maybe Samsung got in over their heads in continued pursuit of the fastest 2.5” SSD & fastest m.2 nvme ssd??
If this is a problem that manifested itself later in the 870 Evo the early adopters of that drive could be fuked as Samsung only has a 2 year warranty on flash memory drives.

      @@solzzy 100% I don’t buy anything until it’s been out for two+ years.
With all due respect…”early adoption” doesn’t apply here. m.2 nvme drives have been available for years! Their has also been allot of reports of serious problems with Samsungs TOTL 870 Evo 2.5” ssd. Samsung knows they’re the king of High speed SSD tech but something is rotten in Denmark and they haven’t taken any responsibility yet! These are very expensive drives we’re talking about.
The reason I mentioned WD Blue is because lots of tech snobs on UA-cam and online turn their nose down @ WD blue because it’s a popular drive that’s fast but not the fastest. WD Blue has proven to be very good drives that have never had any serious problems. Also, WD has a MUCH better warranty than Samsung.
