- An unsually high rate of Samsung 870 EVO drives are failing and dying often with many CRC read errors. This video highlights this issue. I discuss my own Samsung 870 EVOs failure.

I have around 30 SSD's from Samsung, all in use, no issues until now, 840-850-860-870 and 980.
fun fact: My LiteOn SSD, 256 Gb is still working after 13 years of use and around 150TB written.
I've watched sadly as so many technologies have been dumbed down until they barely work. Let's face it: Solid state flash memory, and any device with it soldered in, is disposable. It's outrageous that you must buy a drive larger than you need just to cover the manufacturer's a** as the thing fails. If a manufacturer of a spinning disk recommended that, he wouldn't sell a single unit. What other insulting technologies have we had to accept? Computers and phones without replaceable batteries is the most obscene. Every version of Windows is more hostile than the last. Subscription software is pretty vile as well. I'm a retired programmer, and I have 14 Windows computers. The one I'm using now has Windows 7 and 3 spinning disks (because my data is important).
Oh my favorite one has to be the audio market. Decent amps and DACs that used to be standard for all mid range appliances (TVs, computers) and even some low end audio systems like PC speakers, started being sold on the side for hundreds of dollars/euros. If i want to buy a cheap headphone amp today i will be referred to a 100 dollar gizmo by the """"""audiophiles""""" that will have the same "acceptable for the price" performance as my 15 euro bargain bin PC speakers i bought 20 years ago. They even unironically tried to phase 3.5mm headphone jacks out as a standard feature.
My favorite part is the fucking laptop manufacturers seriously rtx 3050 with 4gb vram and single channel 16gb ddr4?
Wtf is wrong with these manufacturers?
Don't they have some understanding of 10years use?
Sadly i had to buy another 16gb to make my laptop run in dual channel but also i have sata port for another drive and i wanted to get this 870 evo but after watching this video idk what to do maybe go with seagate barracuda hdd 1tb 7200rpm 2.5" 128mb\s anyways it pisses me off because in turkey the prices are off the roof and they want to give us something thats shitty and broken the f samsung?
I'm sorry but that sata port i got on my laptop is good since i can have a sata drive for my photos movies and that type of buisness maybe install another operating system on it? But anyways this still pisses me of you want a storage drive you have to deal with 1 month lifespan
Facts. Using 7 myself with a platter as back up.
Appreciate the information here. I've heard about 870 reliability issues, but was never quite sure where that stemmed from. I took a risk and purchased a 500 GB 870 EVO, and mine has a manufacture date of 2022.11. I've been using it a few weeks, keeping an eye on the SMART data. Seems to check out here. I'm surprised by just how much Samsung has fallen with the quality of their NAND, though. These should have been pulled until a fixed revision were available. Prior to this, I've only owned 840 and 860 Pros.
Agree 2021 drives should have been recalled. You should be ok with a 2022 drive but who knows for definite, you take your chances.
what made you move on from the 960 pro? seems like one of the last MLC drives and the price is absurdely high now
@@nenume00 I thought newer tech might have been more reliable. But thats not the case on SSDs. Also money, as newer drives were cheap. Now we know why.
*860 Pro. It was a great drive, I just moved on to a larger capacity drive because I dualboot. 256 GB was a bit constraining for me with that particular use case. I still have several other 840, 850, and 860 Pros. I use large capacity mechanical drives from HGST (now WD) and Toshiba for bulk storage. @@nenume00
@@IntriguingTech UPDATE: Turns out this was a fake drive....
My 870 EVO 4TB manufactured 09-2022 has failed after not a lot of use. It first was just disappearing from the system during use. Now I cannot access it. Might you be able to point me to where to do the RMA process? Thanks.
870 EVO 1TB - 2021 01 31 production batch used as a backup SSD, and clearly not well.
50 files are corrupted, but lessons learned from the past taught me to make 2 backups, and the other (128GB USB Flash Drive) remains just fine. Thank you for sharing the vid.
Glad you made backups. Get the drive RMAed and you get a replacement drive made in 2023.
I bought a 4TB 870 EVO and mine just disconnects randomly, tried switching cables, SATA ports, nothing really helps. Thank you so much for the video, it was really interesting, despite my SSD failing.
If its made in 2021 I would RMA it.
@@IntriguingTechInteristing, how would I do that? I bought it from Micro Center, so not from Samsung's website.
@@noatblok Depending on your country, Samsung will have a warranty center. You can send it into them and bypass the retailer.
I got a 870 EVO back in October made in August of 2023, it already had the latest firmware installed on it as of writing this comment. I plugged it in pretty much immediately and now 2 months later (although only about 250GB written), it's at the completely healthy status.
Hopefully mine be okay, as that 4TB 870 Evo was pretty cheap in comparison to prices few years ago and I didn't go nvme because most of 4TB nvme drives in that price have no cache on them plus didn't want to overload the chipset as it already has 4 drives and soundcard connected to it, it came with newest firmware out of the box and Samsung magician says it's a genuine drive with manufacturing date of July 2023
Yes good. Thats not one of the bad batch ! Fingers crossed.
Managed to find a used early 2018 batch 860 EVO 4TB for a good deal on ebay couple months ago. Only had about 30TBW on it. Have way more faith in it than these 870s. I have had quite a few 860s as boot drives for some years and none have had errors. I feel like the 870s suffered quality control during the height of pandemic and during silicon/chip shortage which would explain alot of these failures.
Yes, I agree. My older drives are rock solid.
I was thinking about buying this drive, but after seeing multiple videos and threads about the issues with this thing, I'm probably not going to bother. My Kingston SSD has lasted 4+ years now, but I really need a new drive as it's pretty clearly starting to slow down. My current PC doesn't support NVMe by default and getting an adapter is just waste of money and time-
i found out that if your firmware starts with the number 3 it will be affected by this problem. so update your firmware first using samsung magician.
@@patrickjoshuamanzo5420 What's the latest version?
@@_MaZTeR_ i just bought my ssd. It's firmware is the latest. Starts with letter S.
My old Evo 840 is still running without problems, but my nearly two year old 870 died today without warning, taking all it's data with it :/ My stone old WD HDD is still working too ;) Didn't expect that at all.
Yeah maybe they did some cost cutting exercise on the newer drives and in doing so they made them more prone to failure.
My 2 year old 870 evo still works today...
I finally got a replacement from my retailer. It was made three months ago in China.
@@kageshimunamaeThats good. Hopefully they fixed the manufacturing process.
My 10 year old 500GB 7200rpm Seagate Barracuda is still up & running
I woke up this morning to my server being dead. Tried rebooting it, but it couldn't find my Windows OS which I had located on my Samsung 870 EVO 2TB. Took the SSD out of the server, and plugged it into my Windows laptop via a SATA to USB 3.0 adapter. Nothing. File Explorer doesn't pop up with the contents of the drive, Disk Manager doesn't see it, Samsung Magician doesn't see it, and then after a few minutes, Windows pops up a notification that it doesn't recognize the USB device plugged in. Tried it on a known working SSD, and it works. Looks like my Samsung EVO 2TB drive is DEAD. I had your video playing in the background while trying to troubleshoot this drive and when you said anything manufactured November of 2021 or later seems to be safe, I looked down at my drive and saw the dreaded date stamp.... 2021.04. Guess I'll be reaching out to Samsung. Thank you so much for this video.
Yes sounds like you have one of the ones from the dreaded faulty production run. R.I.P.
Very similar to my situation. Literally 7 days ago my server crashed with a 870 EVO 4TB, manufactured February 2021 in Korea. Connected it to another computer and I have the same issue, shows up but you can't open or do anything with it. Hard Disk Sentinel and Crystal Disk Info freeze, and Samsung Magician doesn't get past "Scanning for drive information".
Really frustrating as it was both the servers boot drive but I still had so much configuration on it that wasn't backed up.
Samsung should just put a statement that they'll hand out free replacements for drives made before November 2021
@@_MaZTeR_That would be the sensible thing.
Both of my 870 EVO failed, mnfd early 2021. Although secure erase and firmware update brought drive to life I'd RMA'd those anyway.
Yes, I wouldnt trust them after a secure erase. Especially if Samsung haven't confirmed if the problem is a manufacturing fault.
Recently 870 EVO 500GB started developing bad sectors. Samsung diagnostic app cannot repair it. Recently WD Blue 3D started working super slow, like 2MB/s. And WD Black SN770 started failing with some weird error message in the diag app. For some reason this year I had the most SSDs fail. But it's a lot less than HDDs.
Maybe they all bought faulty nand chips from Samsung ?
I had my last year purchased 990 Pro 1TB lose it's 6% lifespan in first 5 weeks before firmware patch came out, after that it's been fine
That's a reason to pick up a HDD. Despite being very slow compared to SSD's, they are much more reliable and if you're lucky they can last long. Toshiba is best for low failure rates, whereas Seagate drives have the best lifespans, but the failure rates are high. If you want a drive that lasts longer but the chances of failing should be low, then I'd recommend WD instead, as they usually last longer than a Toshiba but less than a Seagate. But it all depends on luck. You can have a Toshiba drive last many years. It also depends on what you use the drives for.
One of my VMs on one of these drives was refusing to update it said it had some errors, so I ran a smart check on the drive and it had 15,000+ uncorrectable errors so I immediately tried to back the drive up and when I did it crashed and I got nothing off of it.
Yeah once that happens its difficult to recover anything. Get it RMAed.
Amazon FR sold 4TB drives for 199 EUR on Prime Days this year. Now Amazon DE has cut that price by a couple more euros. I couldn't resist the itching and grabbed one.
Yes I saw good. deal. I also saw Amazon had 4TB crucial P3 plus early in the year for £112 ! But they sold out pretty quick.

I'm looking to buy one 870 EVO much later, and I know about those pre Nov 2022 bad ones. So far I haven't seen any reports with bad sectors and crc errors on a 2023 or newer drive, but errors like these doesn't show up immediatly. That's why I'm waiting abit longer, maybe I'll get one later this year or next year. Sadly Samsung is the most popular brand and many resellers here in Sweden doesn't offer alot of variation on sata ssd.
Yes I understand the concerns. No data storage is guaranteed to be failure proof so back ups are the answer. Hopefully the newer models are solid, fingers crossed !
@@IntriguingTechAnother thing, you mentioned in your video Nov 2021, but that's wrong it's Nov 2022 that's the critical date.
Thanks for the info, where did you discover this date ?
@@IntriguingTechI cannot write a link here as youtube will belive it's spam. Google "samsung tool and software download", go to their site and into their firmware list. Browse down to the 870 EVO, you'll see a note there. Those made after Nov 2022 are possible made with different hardware as they also come with a new firmware (svt03 something) that cannot be applied to the pre Nov 2022 ones. Some tech forums, like Linus Tech Tips there are threads about the 870 EVO aswell.
At this point i'm better off buying a brand new hdd 7200rpm 2.5 inch for my laptop since all i want to do with it is to install windows 7 on it as my secondary boot os and keep some movies and photos on them along with some older games that don't need ssd since hdd will do the jobb anyways since those games are from a time when hdd was standart
Yeah, my 500GB has a build date of MAY, 2021. All I did was clone my win7 C-drive to make a bootable SSD, and then put it back in the box. I never did try to boot with it. Well, 18 months later I try to format it to use as just extra storage, but, WHEN win10 does recognize the drive it shows NO free space as well as NO data and keeps asking for a reformat to make the drive usable. Ouch!!! My brother used data recovery software and pulled 186Gb off the drive and is TRYING to format it. So, this is likely to be in vain...(?)
Yeah I think its a waste of time unfortunately.

I also had a 850 pro 256Gb died on me as well (very light use). at this point, I am not even sure its just bad luck. or samsung drives tend to fail more often compared to wd or others
You've been doubly unlucky to have a 850 Pro fail on you as well !
My 870 Evo Purchased April 2021 has just failed =(
The dilemma is of course weather to return it, as the data inside is still possibly readable =(
Depends how much you value the privacy of the data ;) and whether its worth letting Samsung take a look at the drive for a new drive.
Mine is a 2TB from 2021/04 and is now unusable. Magician detects it, but won't show any data.
I'm pondering the return procedure and/or whether to get another brand altogether. Given Samsung have made changes, does that mean that new EVOs are reliable? The drive gets a very high rating on Amazon, but also a slew of 1-star reviews citing this exact issue.
I dont know how reliable the new batch of EVOs are but so far so good. I would RMA it.

You should be ok with a 870 if its made 2022-2024. But no one knows for sure.
My 870 EVO 1TB just failed after only two years of casual use. When it began to fail it failed very very quickly. Even files that haven't been read for two years are destroyed. There are already over 100,000 bad blocks. The warranty says you can write 600TB to it I couldn't have written more than 5TB to it in that period. I had just replaced a conventional 2TB drive that had 50TB written to it over a period of nine years before it failed.
I know this failure is an exception but... it really makes me consider going back to a conventional drive. This was a failure spread throughout the drive in a short period. In my experience magnetic drives fail more slowly and usually when writing new data.
Exactly what happened to my drive! Luckily it wasn't important data I had on the drive.
@@IntriguingTech For comparison I also have a 500GB Samsung 840 EVO drive that I have been using continuously for nine years. It has had 38.65 TB written to it and has exactly *zero* reallocated sectors right now.

My 870 EVO from 2021 just died today, although I don't know if mine had this exact issue as it was just flat out banished from existence. It wouldn't show up at all in BIOS and having the thing plugged in wouldn't let Windows boot from my actual boot drive, which was a completely separate NVMe.

What is your Uncorrectable Error Count ? What's the manufacture date of your drive ?
is it batch problem or inherent to the drive
No concrete answer but its likely inherent to the drive for all manufactured in 2021 and possibly earlier.
Have an 860 2tb evo it crapped itself in less than a year. Last Samsung product i'm gonna buy that's for sure. Buttoning up instead of recalling and admitting to shoddy production and issues is just disgusting practice as the entire series is plagued with issues.
Thats unlucky, normally the 860 evos are soild.
Checked my 870 EVO it’s produced on 2023.05.28, should be good but still a bit cautious…
Yes should be good. But no one knows as its early days.
I just bought one today, production date Oct. 2023. Wish me luck 😂
lol You should be ok with a 2023 one !
What SSD would you all suggest then? I just got the 870 and sending it back.
Whats the manufacturer date ? If its 2023 it may be ok. Otherwise Western Digital, or Sandisk SSD Plus or Cruical are options. Not Sandisk Extremes, news is that they have problems.
Isn't crucial failing as well?
@@pulkitchanana A little but not as huge a problem as the older Samsung 870s.
I just bough 870 Evo 500 Gb for 39$ / 38 €
... I want to install OS on it and use another hdd in caddy for other stuff. I don't play games or use high demanding software, hope it stays good hehe 👀
Will see how it goes.
Should be ok if its a new one as they changed the nand manufacturing process.
My 870 worked fine for a couple of years. All of a sudden, files on it failed to show up. I'd run disk repair and it would say the drive was fine. I'd remount it and everything showed up. But if I opened the window with he drive contents, I'd watch each folder gradually read 0 bytes. If I backed out of the contents folder and reopened it, some, if not ALL of the items in the content list would be gone. Unmount, remount, there they are. All of the information is still on the drive, but it won't remain readable long enough to get the information transferred. I'm going mad.
Sounds like a bad drive. RMA it.
Yep just had one fail, manufactured 2021/04. Luckily just a game drive and had nothing important on it.
Unlucky. Get it RMAed and a new replacement.
Had a 2tb 870 EVO fail
manufactured 2021.05
Thats one from the bad batch. Get it RMAed.
So what you suggest can I go with crucial mx500 or samsung 870 evo ?
Crucial mx500 is kind decent, samsung 870 evo might be better.
If you wanna buy the samsung one, Make sure to check the firmware from this ssd, and type that on search engine if that firmware got issues. Mine samsung 870 evo 1tb still works even today.
Its your own choice.
Crucials fine. If you got confidence that Samsung fixed the problem then get Samsung.
Thanks@@IntriguingTech
Thanks @@AntiGrieferGames 🙂
Thanks. gonna brick mine first thing tomorrow morning.
No problem thanks for commenting.
Man im seeing a tom of them for 10-20 in my local marketplace, nowonder this was the case
If they are newly manufactured they might be ok. But there's no guarantee. Cheers.
mine has 2021.02 written on the back, Its a 4TB :(
Thats not good. Back up everything!
This is ridiculous. I just had mine fail after not even 2 years of using it, only 2 TBW. 30 files on there (all in different folders) are broken and no longer readable. Mine was also made in Sep 2021. I’ve been in contact with Samsung support and it’s been a nightmare. Thinking about buying a different drive now…
Yes, similar situation to what happened to mine. Its RMA time.
@@IntriguingTech right. Are you going to replace it with a newer 870 EVO or a different drive? I’ve been doing some research and some other brands seem to have similar issues so i’m really not sure what to do
@@SorooshMhsI had a replacement 870 EVO made in 2023 but I bought another nvme m.2 drive and used that instead.
@@IntriguingTechi see i see. Were you able to refund it at least?
@@SorooshMhs No I intend to use the replacement drive too
Thanks for the heads up! Was panicking last night after purchasing another 2TB. My 500GB was manufactured 2022/07/02 both 2TB are dated 2023/04/11.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a suitable alternative? Sandisk Ultra 3D?
Yes try Sandisk as an alternative. Or Crucial but endurance isn't as good. UPDATE: News is that Sandisk Extremes have bugs also, so beware.
@@IntriguingTechlol is anything good?
@@blackterminalA few brands have their dud models. Its a minefield out there!
or wd blue 1tb. and they are cheaper than samsung 870
@@invisiblianYes thats one suggestion.
What about 870 evo 500gb Manufactured 2022.11? Any news?
2022 should be ok.
My 870 Evo 2TB i 2023.09 is safe?
So far there haven't been any reports of 2023 models being affected. But no guarantees.
because there's no competition from sandisk they are sold to WD
More competition is always good for the consumer. Thanks for commenting.
Lol, i dont know if i have lucky, but mine 870 evo 1tb still works since 2021. Didnt even firmware update that! Should be that some Firmware got issues?
Mine 980 nvme 1tb still works. My 980 Pro heatsink 2tb still works.
no issue of my 4 old 120gb 840 that i got for free , the 240gb sandisk ssd still works today. even the 2016 intenso ssd 120gb, that are the boot drive from windows 10 since 2016 still works. Does i feel got lucky? I never ever updated the firmware from all SSDs.
Is your 870 evo made in 2021 ?
@@IntriguingTech yes, oct 2021
@@AntiGrieferGamesThat is around the date they started to fix the manufacturing process maybe your lucky but I would still make backups.
My samsung 870 evo 1tb keep desappear without a reason whe installing download games :(( I need to shut down my entite pc to see my ssd but it s not always on :(( What should I do?
Back it up. Check the smart data with Samsung magician. Do not update the firmware until you've backed it up. Firmware flashing might brick it. Good luck.
@@IntriguingTech I have the latest firmware from the beginning so I didn't updated it. Smart is good nothing to worry about, not bad blocks literally nothing. I swap my first ssd into another location in pc and put my samsung in another place, maybe it was my mistake with the cables idk now. I hope everything will be fine from now !

Yeah thats a dead drive you have on your hands no doubt about it.
I have 0 Errors on mine.
Very cool. The first time ever i need to buy a SSD is when apparently all the brands and models previously regarded as reliable are now considered the most unreliable drives ever. Oh and what's this? Looks like i am just in time to experience all manufacturers colluding in dialing down production to artificially inflate the prices! Because of course this would be legal, why would consumers have any protection and why would brands not try to fuck them at every opportunity? Started making garbage under the same brand now that your market is established? Time to pump those prices up! Yeah buddy! Drives that costed 50 euros yesterday now cost 90. Yesterday i placed an order for 860 for 80 euros to avoid this, today that order is canceled cause "sorry, no stock XD" and the drive is being sold for 200 euros everywhere. So cool. It's great. Life is great.
I feel like Al Pacino at the end of scent of a woman: i want to take a fucking flame thrower to this place.
Sorry if this has only a slim relation to your video.
I understand the frustration.. I hate it when cartels collude to drive the prices higher!!
@@IntriguingTech I don't know what to do. I will likely have to play into their game and buy this stupid drive that will likely break for 95 euros because i already see it being listed for 150 euros in other stores around me. I can't put into words how much i am fuming over this right now.
