I have to get my double in a week for finals so let’s hope I can, this video is the most detailed that really focused on technique when my teacher didn’t.
I am a Jazz dancer and have been trying to get these pirouettes forever. The positions are different than how I am supposed to do it but this helped a lot. I was am having trouble falling out of my single turns.
That’s great news. The most important part to finishing a pirouette is to lengthen, breathe and try to maintain position for as long as possible. Dare yourself to hold it for a second longer 👍
Fantastic video. I’m not a ballerina at all, but I’ve always loved the movements, the music, and the athleticism. Your breaking down the components and specifics to practice at each key point was fantastic! Thank you.
Hi to you all, firstly I am teaching live classes on Instagram on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 16:00 GMT, starting today where I will continue to work on pirouettes and allegro so if you’re not following me just search for HowlyBallet on the gram. Secondly my apologies for delay in more UA-cam content, due to the nature of this year it’s been incredibly difficult to work with my team, but I plan on lots more videos in the near future.
Omg this is the best video on the internet !!! Beats all the rest with this in one practice I’ve managed to do a turn and a half in one go ! Thank you so much
This is so crazy how quick I have been able to improve my pirouettes! Thank you so much Martin and team, could not have done it without you! Still a long way to go, but I’m very proud of my progress so far ☺️
Thanks for the great feedback and jumping will feature very heavily in my upcoming videos. Also I will be posting mini-videos on insta and FB so stay tuned for tips on attitude turns, jumps and lots more.
i have about 10 things ruining my pirouettes. I am aware of most of them. also i'm scared of hurting my knee, ankle and foot when the floor is not slippery enough. It is so hard trying to fix all of these problems at once, but if i fis only one bad habit at a time, i still won't be turning. you're right i should probably go back to practicing balance in retiré.
Great video omg! I love ballet but where I live there's only one half hour class a week which obviously isn't enough if I want to improve, so this is a big help :)
I’m in a Highschool dance class and we’re on a jazz unit and we have a routine to memorize and istg this class makes me want to cry but your video will help
Good luck with your high school dance. Remember pirouettes are all about balance so practice the basics first and try to stay up as long as possible without putting your heel down. 👍
I often find that working on one section at a time has an amazing impact on our technique. Try not to do too many things at once. I’m quite sure you’ll find consistency with these tips.
you are amazing. Is it possible to learn pirouettes in 7 months? I am willing to spend a couple of hours everyday to practice. Please show me the routines that will help me learn the fundamentals fast? Thank you San
This is very helpful for me as a beginner to ballet I’m not a ballet dancer I’m a lyrical dancer so thank you!!! Also how about one on fouetté turns!!! Max
Thanks Max and glad you’re finding the vid helpful. Keep going with your pirouettes and Fouetté Turns are on my future to do list so keep working on that high retire position!
I see that you prefer not to cross the retiré , something that prefered too, when I was young, finding easier to keep my thigh and knee open.Just , out of curiosity, what is your explanation of not crossing it?
I trained at Royal when it followed Vaganova methodology so now I am programmed to love a high wide retiré. It’s a choice that I make work by focussing on hip flexor and glute development. Balanchine loved a crossed retiré so I think there’s definitely an argument for both to exist! 👍
I'm new to ballet and for my spring show with my group, towards the end I have to do a double pirouette in our contemporary piece. I know balance is definitely something I have to improve on, got any extra tips?
Hi there! What would you suggest starting wise for exercise for strength and balance? I have little dance experience but looking to get back into it. Very hard to find classes in my area for adult "beginners"
i am a classical ballet dancer who really struggles to keep my lower back in place. is there a way to make my posture in to a good habit rather than having my lower back out?
The way I got my posture looking good was hearing how my teacher reacted when I didn't have the habit yet! Hope you can get your back nice and straight if you haven't already!
Apologies for delay in response- posture is hugely important, but I believe that glute activation is the way forward to maintain turnout and balance for your pirouettes.
Any tips on hopping in your pirouette I can do 2 turns if I’m lucky but I always hop or fall out. I try to think about pulling up but I think I just don’t have a natural sense of turn like I’m almost scared so I come out of the turn I don’t know 😅
This helped me so much, my turns are much better! My only question is, I've heard it A LOT but do you `lock` or hold your muscles tight and strong? All your muscles, in the shoulders, back, legs etc. So your body can support itself and keep posture during turns? I just want to verify it. And also, I am imagine you keep your posture as best as possible during turns? (Shoulders back, straight back, etc
Many thanks for your comment. Great question as well. Locking positions is a double-edged sword to be honest particularly in a pirouette. If by locking you then take on too much tension which stops spotting or weight adjustments during the turn then that’s not a good thing. But I do also agree that the traps, abs, pecs, delts, biceps & triceps need to feel super engaged and locked in. I often refer to pirouettes as tightrope walking, being strong and balanced with the ability to adjust.
Pets andmore I like to establish position of the legs as quickly as possible, I often try to hit full position by the first quarter of the turn and then it’s simply a case of maintaining balance throughout how many pirouettes you can possibly achieve. Most unsuccessful pirouettes occur from too many moving parts and a lack of commitment to maintain position through to the very end. Every performer that I have trained have different specific needs and thoughts but for me if you begin with the correct preparation and mindset, then it’s a matter force from the ground to create acceleration.
I'm practising my jazz turns and find it helpful to watch these videos for balance techniques etc and I've noticed that my foot is doing a little hop/shuffle in the middle of my turn and I don't know why... do you know why it could be doing this??
Two reasons this could be happening 1. Your off balance and having to Hop to stay on balance. 2. It’s become habit for you to hop on your supporting leg and you’ve lost confidence to stay on balance My advice would be to challenge yourself to avoid hopping by allowing yourself to safely fall off balance when practicing. This will tell you where your Weight is placed when turning. It takes a lot of commitment and trust but you’ll start to build more confidence and consistency by changing your mental approach to your work 👍
Everyone has their own teaching methods so I can understand how opinions may differ. My tips are based on my own experiences as a dancer and then as a teacher and I find loading up on the supporting leg delivers a much higher level of consistency and productivity 👍
It was confusing when he talked about the arms and the arm not leading but the body moving with the arms but then never demonstrated how to do that! Or what to do! It’s like a huge chunk was missed out, so am now none the wiser of what to do with the arms as you ‘take off’. He jumped from the preparation t9 the ending with nothing in the middle. Please redo this video! I’m desperate as I have an exam in November xx
I understand your frustration as there are at least 500 points where a pirouette can breakdown (if not more) I’m about to produce a whole new series of pirouette videos to help everyone, but until then if you need some guidance just let me know 👍
Then take it back to basics and fully concentrate on balancing. When I was having bad days with my pirouettes I would just simply work at the bar and then let go and try to hold position for as long as possible to lock in that muscle memory.

Practice balancing daily ( like 100x) good luck

That’s great to hear Alexie. Patience and persistence are the key to unlocking pirouettes 👍
This helps me a lot for my pirouettes
Awesome!! Looking forward to more. How about one for attitude turns. And generally, how to build power for jumps!

I can do a double but it’s inconsistent. I’m really trying for a triple for me show next weekend. I only have one weekend left to fix my coordination.

I tend to fall out of my turns, I will go around doubles but halfway through it I begin to tip

Try to finish on balance, keep lifting higher when you feel yourself about to hop. Lift that retiré more towards the end.
this is great! could you help with tricks please??
Billy Williscroft next weeks video is all about big jumps, which if you sort out your preparations then tricks are easier to master.

@@howlyballet7744 That makes sense actually, but what about legs? They are what you're standing on

Am a gymnast player & have a problem in balancing a double peroutte & closing my feet together at the end
Try not to close. Stay on balance! 😂
How to improve my pirouette balancing???🙏
For me, other than repetition I would highly recommend Glute and Andominal exercises to help you stabilise your body in position 👍
@@howlyballet7744 thanks for giving my question answer 🙏🙂
Claudia teaches weight in the middle??? trying your way. Turns are my nemesis!!!!
