To be honest; if you had a dance studio/ taught in one I would so sign up. You are so helpful and explain things so well. I'm sure your online classes are great too! ( I would join but I do not currently have the money to since I am actually having to save in order to pay for my own dance lessons next year)
You truly are a beautiful dancer, you can tell you've had excellent training and obviously it's payed of! I'm going to my summer intensive tomorrow and this is so helpful, thank you so much x
Pirouettes cause me grate anxiety and although I am quite strong and work my posture and balance alla the time I can't seem to do more than double pirouettes on pointe and those are not constantly good. What should I do? Please do another video with more tips and maybe fouettes. Your videos are so helpful!
I absolutely love your channel! I'm trying the 3-2-1 technique you recommended at it is helping my pirouettes A LOT! Could you possibly do a video on strengthening and involving port de bras and upper body to show more confidence in class, without getting bulky?
These tios are great. I struggle with my balance in turns. Often I go back to the basics: go up and hold it. thank you Katie for all the time you have spent over the last four years helping so many people. Even those who are now in theiur sixties and never tried ballet before in my life.
Came to this video to get my Ballet doubles, but after doing this several times a week, and remembering the exercise to bring the other arm along, I have also been able to get my Jazz tripples :OOOOO !!!Thank you!!!
WOW! I have been struggling with finding my turns again (after many years of not doing ballet and loosing all form of technique) and the 2,1 trick and thinking of seeing myself twice has really helped. Break through today! Thanks so much Kathryn!
Thank you sooooo much for this video. I did my first ballet class yesterday (I’m quite a late starter), but the only class they do for my age is an open class where everyone already knows ballet, and it was extremely embarrassing constantly falling over whilst trying to do pirouettes whilst everyone else did them perfectly. I will definitely try these tips and exercises. You are a life saver!!!
I know this is an older video, but it’s helped me so much. Your tips reaaaally helped me and I feel a lot more confident about my body placement in turns. You’re the best!
I have been dancing seven years and this video helped me so much! Since now I couldn't do so many piruets! And you are great at giving us this tips. Thank you!
I wish you were my teacher, you are producing the most helpful videos, I'm an adult who has gone back to ballet just for fun but I feel I'm not making progress at the minute and we aren't pushed or shown new things which is a bit frustrating.
Thanks :). When I learned pirouettes, I was doing jazz. This meant that my passe was NEVER turned out, so now that I do ballet as well, I basically have to re-learn them and try to do the right kind of passe in both settings.
You are awesome ....so glad I found you on here.....wonderful to watch.... I still love learning dance and I am in my fifties....never too late....lol.....thanks for sharing your gift.
thanks katherine.. 😄😄😄 i seldom fail in techniques. but i always fail in confidence.. it makes me can.t do my pirouettes well.. i was touched by ur saying "get frightened to turn" n so on, and in your video of PIROUETTE IN POINTE SHOES you also said "trust your body".. seems like i have to work in my confidence
I've always been able to do a solid double on my right, but my left has always been shaky, after watching this video I landed a triple on my right and a double on my left! Thank you so much!
Wonderful to see these very helpful, informative videos. Thanks for stressing weight placement and getting the second side around. I've had some teachers say it is the "power" of the turn. The first arm around is like pushing on the gas pedal of your car, and the second arm or side is the transmission powering the turn of the wheels. I noticed in a Russian Vaganova video I watched the other day, that the instructor was stressing to the dancer that she needed to engage the gluteal on the supporting side. She showed the turn done wrong, as you did, and then she patted her gluteal area as she corrected the turn. It makes it a very active correction. Many dancers end up being off their leg because those muscles are not engaged in a high position. The spot is a wonderful tool too, as you also pointed out. Some teachers say "see your eyes." I can't see the mirror usually because I'm nearsighted, but I imagine a mirror directly in front of me and imagine seeing my eyes in that imaginary mirror. It works just as well while keeping the head at the correct level. I loved hearing the concept of backward counting. That defines the turn in your mind and becomes a clear goal. Great videos! Thanks so much, Katie! I can't always get to a studio. This helps so much!!
This was extreamly helpful! Thank you for doing this video because I can now do 5 turns in a row without wobbling about and having to hop to get back my balance!
Thank you so much Kathryn this video helped so much especially the 1.2.3 tip. So good!! I’ve been really trying to improve my turns because I used to whip out turns so easily but then my technique lacked for a while and then I worked more on my technique but the pirouettes were never the same until now.
Thank you so much for all the exercise videos you have posted. I am an intermediate/advanced dancer and I want to be a professional one day and my parents have not been able to afford lessons this summer. I have been doing your videos and incorporating your tips and exercises and I have seen improvement! I am so grateful to have these to keep me in shape until regular session lesson start next month. Thanks again! :)
You are an amazing dancer and such a beautiful young lady. Thankyou so from the bottom of my heart you have helped me improve so much and thanks to you I even got into a company. ABSOLUTLY AMAZING!
These tips sound so helpful, I'm going to try them all next time I take a class! I like the way you addressed various issues related to pirouettes. Teachers tend to always tell you the same things, like stay up and use your spot, but I actually think that things like being in a straight line or bringing your opposite side with you might be even more important, at least in my case :) Thank you so much and keep the videos coming!
Hi Kathryn I am dancing as a hobby but I really want to be better. This week in our dance school there was a professor as gast teacher here as a special week in the summer dance session,I took your advises and listened to every single comment from him (actually i always listen but this time even more carefully) and it helped me a lot! I even talked to him about my turning problem, which did make him notice me in the class and found out that my upper body is leaning backward . This video is also my life saver, thank you so much! --kitty
I absolutely adore this video!! I've been trying to improve my pirouettes en pointe going so far as to watch someone analyze the physics behind it but no one has explained it as well as you!! Thank you! :)
I love the end - It is so fun to see you having so much fun making these. Great to see photos in the stretch break again too. I've been working on getting back in shape in earnest for about two months, and your videos have provided so much needed inspiration. It has really become a big part of what keeps me going forward with it. Have a great week off and keep us posted on the music!
Thank you so much Kathryn, I started to dance at 18 and I can do everything except pirouettes, going to try these exercises and I´m looking forward for the next video! Greetings from Mexico!
Thanks so much! I think as you say I get slightly scared when I turn and I'll try these tips tomorrow at dance! Pirouettes are my weakness so I'm so glad you made this video :)
Thank you so much! I've been dancing ten years and my turns still aren't where I'd like them to be. Most of your tips I had never heard before. Very very helpful! Can't wait to try my turns again :)
I was learning how to do pirouettes in my class last night, jeez. So much harder than ballet dancers make it look on stage. I was mostly working on the footwork, not really turning entirely, because I don't want to end up falling and accidentally hurting myself, or just an embarrassing situation. I know, I've only been back in ballet for a few months, still a beginner right now, but obviously the fear of falling is scary for any dancer. Just have to keep practicing it.
I really struggle to get from the prep (4th) to the retiré position. I can balance in retiré for forever at the barre, but I always fall over when I'm going from the preparation. Do you have any advice?
The music was phantom of the opera! I love the phantom of the opera! Thanks for the tips! I've been trying to work on my pirouettes for a while, I used to be good at pirouettes, then I lost it now I'm the worst pirouetter. This helped a lot thank you so much
Your videos are helping me so much!! I am going to be starting ballet soon and I had experience with dance as I do jazz, I didn't have any experience with ballet though so doing your simple steps and classes are helping me prepare. Ballet is very calming 😊
i love the visual advice nd brain hacks that u gave. That stuff really works! I could see how when u said u pretended u were the "coil" u instantly went way higher! cool!
Hi Katie!!! You are SO SO inspiring:) thanks for providing such conductive info and instruction! My turns got instantly 20% better as practicing with you in this video. You are the best.
Hi Katie! thank you so much for all of your tips! Have been watching every single video of yours and it really motivates me and helps a lot with my technique. please keep making more videos:)
Oh my goodness this helped so much!!! Thank you for sharing all your amazing tips! Your turns are so GORGEOUS! I've been loving all of your videos! You are such an inspiration to me! - Katherine
Ommgg😱❤️❤️I’m choked . This is the only video that helps me for do my pirouettes . I’m sooo happy now thank youuu soooo much ❤️ I’m gonna watch ALL your videos now 😂😘😘😘
Thanks for the tips! I love them and you're an amazing pianist as well! My turns aren't the best in my class, but I am still working hard on them. Once again, thanks for the tips!
*TIP: as shown in the Old Grade 4 RAD, try and spot you head. This will become a habit. eg. if you are facing 1 (front) and want to turn to 2 (45 degrees to the right), don't move your head (keep it facing the front, 1) until you put your foot down in 3rd/4th/5th position. Grade 4 Center Practice @ 1:25 hope this helps you! x
i love your videos so much!!! the one video i would love to see you do is one on flexibility and how to become more flexible. i find very little quality flexibility training for dancers on the internet and i trust your videos sooooo much!!!

I know a student at my studio who’s in your situation and they let her clean the studio floors on Saturdays and sundays to help with her tuition
Foreshadowing level 100
When you're kinda frustrated nobody taught you that, never gave you tips that way. Good thing we have talented teachers like Kathryn on UA-cam
Noelija W fr though. Her channel has helped me so much!
I'm glad he's teaching her to passe the foot to the side of the knee, not in front!😊
Hello! I'd like to make a ballet basics video request:
Could you review proper weight placement and turnout during tendus?
preparation 1:45
quarter pirouette 3:46
double pirouette 6:48
You give awesome technical & visual advice. Thank you so much
+Mavina I Thank you so much!
My new teacher by choice.. so glad to find your tutorials, Thanks Kathryn!
You truly are a beautiful dancer, you can tell you've had excellent training and obviously it's payed of! I'm going to my summer intensive tomorrow and this is so helpful, thank you so much x
"Show your diamonds"... was that a Balanchine expression? :) My ballet teacher, who adored him, would always say that.
kellym587 Oh yes! :)
Kelly sammmmmmeeeee

I loved the "Counting Backwards" Tip!
Thanks so much! Maybe after the turning series, you could do leaps? So you have a leaps and turns series?
You are awesome ....so glad I found you on here.....wonderful to watch.... I still love learning dance and I am in my fifties....never too late....lol.....thanks for sharing your gift.
I just did my first successful Pirouette by watching your video. Thank you so much Kathryn :)
